  • In this video we are doing a lot of things on the farm! Jim has started discing with the horses. Our friend Leo stopped in with some bee boxes. We got the sawmill running, and we finished up the greenhouse.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Things went at a different pace back then, plus there were only 2 teams, just 4 solid dependable aged horses. He bought Duke and Earl, then Baron, along came Bree, then lost Buck, which forced Baron into the work he needed. Training takes a lot of time, what I call "makework" and total number of horses is 7. They never waste a minute, what with sawmill and carpentry and inevitable and constant breakdowns, often expensive. William is a real handy fellow and now indispensable.

Holy smokes, I can't believe how much work must be done to own a farm. No wonder so many of the children offspring from farmers and ranchers want to leave.

Many of those who left would give anything to get back to it. There is nothing lost by working. It keeps you healthy and fit and active. How many young folks do you know who can do what Jim does in a day, and he's a year older than me. Kids get seduced by television and the promise of an easy life, but life is hard wherever you live it. At least on the farm you get the joy of seeing things grow, and of being out in the fresh air, and of being independent. You don't worry how you are going to pay your utility bills. You pick up your chainsaw and go cut wood.

Jim, glad to see that you took my advice to have honeybees on the farm. We are also putting up swarm traps here in central Illinois. We run 10 production colonies of Carniolan honeybees with 2 backup colonies. There are many native pollinators, and with honeybees you will have increased crop production along with great honey to eat.

I raised honey bees in Iowa. I have not seen wild honey bees in years. Corn and bean fields everywhere seems to prohibits the wild bee population. However in the Sonoran desert in Southern California, where I winter, the wild honey bee swarms are active and moving about. No pesticides in the desert! Jim farms organic! A bees best friend!

That is really the best way, but it takes a lot of luck too. When I looked at the size of his frames, that’s the part that goes in the box that the Bees build on. It looks like he’s going to be using a different type of Bee box. You might wanna ask him if you could build him some big boxes.

Jim & Brenda, I love watching your videos. I'll admit that I'm pretty ignorant about horses and farming as I come from a line of city folk. I've always been fascinated by farmers and especially the way you farm using horses more than tractors (I like how Jim utilizes machinery when that is the best way to get something done but he prefers the horses). Watching how you all interact with your neighbors and your animals is so refreshing. I come away from watching your videos feeling as though I learned something and feeling refreshed (due the lack of negativity with an abundance of respect and kindness). I started bee keeping back in 1972 and still at it.i use lemongrass oil on a cotton swap and put it in the swarm traps that also attract bees too.honey bees do not pollinate corn, wheat, and a few others.corn and other certain crops do that on there own by using the wind to carry the pollen from plant to plant thats why corn and wheat is planted close to each other.ants are another pollinator people don't think about.they carry pollen on their feet when they walk from flower to flower.

Honey Bees And horses don't always coincide well ,sweat around the horses ears can realy get the bees attention . This can be more noticeable when flowers start to go away .for us ,that is July & August that is the start of winter I have had draft horses & honey bees for over 35 yrs. Best tasting honey you will ever taste comes your hives!

Jim you will have bees. I had bees and loved them. Got to darn old to lift the boxes full if honey. I did same thing catching swarms.
I used LEMON OIL as a bait attractant. It really worked.

A very interesting video today. I particularly liked to learn about the bees. Looking forward to see the difference having them on the farm makes. It's so important to look after the bees. Without them we'd be in big trouble. Good Luck!

Love your videos. I get to relive my childhood growing up on a farm. We didn't farm with horses but my grandparents did. We missed so much . As I watch your videos I regret growing up without draft horses. Such a wonderful life.

using horses is not as easy as one would think-knowing each horse capabilities-what horse works better with another horse-my granpa has 2 horses -you having as many horses as you do and their training takes a lot of work over a long time

I bet it's heavenly to sit down in your favorite chair and put your feet up at the end of the day. Brenda your greenhouse has really turned out great, and William great job on the finishing work.

I've kept bees some tips you need Russian honeybees, you must insulate the hives in the winter very well or they will freeze the top super in the winter must be a screen box filled with large sawdust flakes this prevents the moisture from raining on them also freezing them, don't feed them in the hive 100ft away using a large chicken water with rocks in yhe water so they wont drowned, fall yellow jackets will intrude the hive and steal larvae and the sugar water if it's fed in the hive, another problem is ants getting in and eating the honey solution use a plastic or stainless stand with a moat that also gives them a water source

I host bees. Hosting is a little different than keeping bees as I don’t collect any honey. I hollowed a good size log for them and attracted a wild colony to take up residence in the log. They have lived there for a few years now. I do this to have more early season pollinators for my fruit trees.
