Aww he's a brand new little baby! We had a cow that had twins last year. The cow only took one. We bottle fed the other. I gave my son the job of feeding him. He loved taking care of him . We named them Ben and Jerry 😊 Ben was with his mom and we took care of Jerry. He turned out to be a beautiful bull

Cows never fail to amaze me with what decisions they decide to make with their young. I was raised part of the year on my grandparents' dairy farm, and when we started on our own part time ranch after our marriage, itcwas not too many years before I just had to have a few head of dairy just to keep a bit of grandpa's legacy going. One thing my grandfather always said about his cows is that we should never believe a cow was being dumb about keeping or rejecting a calf, being willing to nuture twins or letting one go to bond with another cow, or chosing to trust its dairymen to care for a calf it knewvit could not. We have had many a selection of stories that over many, many years have proven that his insistence on letting cows sort things out themselves was never the wrong thing to do, as long as standing back and letting your gut tell you when its time to intervene. Our craziest story happened during the start of Covid, when we had cow deliver a stillborn calf while a herd member gave birth to twins and immediately rejected her first for her second. Given that the first born was up and nursing well before momma delivered the second, the first calf appeared to be initially off toca decent start but once the twin was born, momma made the decision that #2 apparently needed more care than the first. We tried very hard to get the cow with the stillborn calf to adopt twon #1 but she kept running the calf off back in direction of its biological mother, almost as if to be saying that she knew who that calf belonged too. By the end of the day it was clear that twin #1 was not going to be accepted by either cow, or that is how it appeared to be, so we choose to intervene with bottle feeding as the little guys was looking like he was wearing down. Getting him back to the house and barn, settled in and fed and warm he seemed to be doing well at least until about 5 AM when we were woken up to our LGD and our border collie having all manner of hysteria near the side shed the calf had been settled in. Of course, we immediately panicked thinking some predator had decided to move in on the shed we were out in the corral stil in pajamas only to be greeted by the cow who had the stillbirth doing her best to break into the shed and the calf catterwalling with all its might wanting to nurse.
Backtracking along the cow's path it ended up appearing that at some point she must have changed her mind about thinkingbthe calf belonged to the other cow and perhaps it might be hers. She left a nice trail of several broken fences, including going through two electric ones separating pastures and must have spent most of the night coming in from where the main herd was, including a long walk down a local road and found not only the homestead but the corral next to the shed, where she barged through a couple of panels to claim the calf. The calf had been calling on and off during the night after a late night bottle and momma cows tend to have really good hearing. When we opened the shed up, the calf went for the milk, and the cow was acting as if she had been bonded to it since birth. Why she changed her mind about raising the calf I will never know and how she managed a 4 mile trip she never had taken before to locate where the calf had gone too, is also beyond me, but gives my grandfather's belief that cows will sort issues out a lot of credence. Interestingly the LGD at rhe house was the one we kept there as we keep some goats and chickens there and he was a bit freaked out over finding a very large cow in the yard, and our border collie was not helping as she wanted to herd that very big cow back where it came from. Sometimes animals just work out things for themselves.

Wow, that's incredible. It's amazing the instinct a momma has to bond with a baby and find her way to the calf over such a distance to an area she'd never been before.

I raise horses and a mare with a stillborn who rejects an orphaned foal will often change her mind after a few hours when her udder gets full and almost painful! I bet the pain drove that cow to grab that calf knowing it would relieve the pressure! They are smart.

Just had my 1st set of twins March 24th. She claimed the 2nd born calf. After a few hrs of watching them she was tending to her favorite and the other one snuck in and got his colostrum. Afterwards I took him and now we have a bottle calf. The confusion on that cows face when she had 2 calves that both smelled like her was definitely a funny sight

    Tyler,
I’m so glad you found the twin calf!!!!! it is sure a pretty calf. I’m kind of surprised at its color given the color of your cows.! it breaks my heart when a cow abandon a baby calf!!! they represent so many things on the farm but initially, they’re just darn cute. I love listening to your daughter talk about it and repeat everything you said, and her brother to be quiet and not making any moves. The amazing thing is he was off playing and waiting his skin and then he gets to the trailer and he says quietly exactly what daddy instructed him to do. It just goes to show, children are listening when we don’t think they are !!!!!😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ hands
I am going to hope by the time you make your next video you’ve been able to get the cow which lost her calf, to accept this baby as her own❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
I loved helping my grandpa bottlefeed baby cash only back then we mostly use buckets that hung on the fence… But now that I think about it, that was when they were older. We did use bottles, but dad and grandpa did the bottles and we can get the buckets. It’s such a good experience for children to do that and on one hand, it would be good for your daughter and son to be a part of that experience, but it takes a lot of time plus experience and I understand that.… Not to mention it’s healthier for the calf to Nurse a cow and learn about life from a cow ….saying prayers for the best🙏❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Going back to the color of the calf, I guess I should’ve paid more attention to what the bull looked like ~ that would probably give me my answer.
By the way, Tyler Those are pretty good cow sounds you made trying to catch that calf😊😊❤️❤️

We just released our orphaned calf to the herd a couple days ago. It was born right before Christmas. Bottle and feed twice a day for three months. My wife says we are not going to do that again! I think we gave it an advantage by keeping it in a pen where the herd walked by daily. So it was fairly drama-free when we let it go. As well as a bottle of milk we also gave it a bottle of hot water at every feeding even after we tapered off on the milk rations. We never saw any sign of scours. Maybe the water helped or maybe we were lucky.

I’m in australia with Herefords and Santa’s however when I try to foster calves I typically put the cow in the crush and let calf suck off cow for a couple days but locking calf in the same pen with cow. I have had success fostering calves on dry cows just weaning their previous calf or cows that have calved up to 8 days before new calf. Like you said I think it would be worth a shot at fostering that way you don’t need to buy formula and the cow still raises a calf.

You probably need to feed the grey calf. Take it home and let your kids help feed it.
Good to see your kiddos helping with the calf. Looks like a good temporary area for him. He has a chicken to entertain him.🐓🐔🐥

Just an FYI...bottle calves are very high right now...dairy cross in the $400 to $500 range and beef up to $800....so that might be an option

WOW! I use to get 1 - 3 day old Angus & Angus/Hereford cross bottle calves for $10.00 - $20.00 each. Cattle market prices sure have exploded.

I had a friend that had a Jersey/Angus nurse cow that would only take black calves. So it's possible that mom only wanted the black twin. Cute little guy and I hope he does fine.
