Love your videos. Caught my first spotted gar yesterday. Thanks so much. I have a posted a short video of it on my page if you would like to see. Thanks again
Do you typically hook them in the side of the mouth after 15secs? What’s the hook up percentage like? Will 50 lbs mono handle the teeth of a 15lbs plus fish? I’m really curious as you can see. Great vid.
@@EverydayNormalGuy07 catching a 15 pound longnose gar is pretty rare. That’s a 50+ inch fish. Most longnose gar are probably between 5-10 pounds. But yes. They’re nowhere near as sharp as a pikes teeth. They’re extremely pointy though, that’s for sure.
@@andrewdevlin8756 We get them that size where I live. I never use cut bait is why I was asking. I cast to them, sight fishing for them. It’s a lot like hunting. Tons of fun.
@@CatchingDinosaurs for sure. That’s why we use 50lb leader and heavy rods, and meticulously remove every strand after catching. Same could be said for letting them swallow cut bait.
I went walking 13 miles this morning to fish a little creek I didn't know existed until about 7 am earlier today Until today I had never seen a real gar but while I was bream fishing a 7ft gator gar came up in front of me and I'm so happy I finally have a place to catch gar Time to get out my surf rod and see how fast I get drug in that little creek
Whats the best bait for long nose? Theres a spot on the brazos river that is flooded with longnose but im usually going for cats. Would love to hook on the gar
How can you guys fish the Brazos and not catch gar ?? I think it's funny how a trash fish like any gar can be anybodys treasure. Oh and by the way , the little Brazos is even more infested with gar
All you have to do is want and fish for catfish and you will be overwhelmed with gar. I have caught them on shad, shiners, goldfish, perch, mullet, shad dip stink bait, catalpa worms, etc, etc
I live and fish in laredo at the river(rio grande) and been using a similar rig and they snap that line %90 of the time.... im alittle confused and almost certain these gar are messing with me😂
I accidentally caught a 47 inch longnose gar while catfishing once, I felt him playing with it and I wasn't sure what it was at first. I waited a few seconds till he started to run then I set it right away thinking it was a catfish. Wasn't till I saw it jump that I knew it was a gar, I was lucky to get him in at all cause I hooked him in the front of the mouth with a circle hook.
Yesterday I had a gar that was swimming back and forth on top, tried everything then it finally hit a little jig, I fought it hard and got it on to the bank where it popped off back int the water😭😭😭

Love catching them! It took me forever to learn to be patient enough to let them run for a bit before setting the hook.
Nice informative video on gar fishing, I like the drag release lever on the back of that reel, I have one that I think I'll use to try this with
Love those baitfeeder reels! I’ve got four Okuma 6500’s and wouldn’t trade em for anything

You really don’t need 50 lb mono lol. I catch them all the time on 10 pound mono and never have issues really.

Even for fish over 15lbs? I’m just surprised that their teeth don’t cut through 10lbs mono.

Rope jigs work a lot better than bait. Much more consistent hooksets and catching them on artificial is so much fun.
and if you break it off or fail to remove it you kill the fish horribly

Beautiful little fish, how big do they grow?
like 200 lbs
What size Baitrunner is that? I have some old 2003 model 6500Bs, a 4000D, 8000D, and two Thunnus Ci4 12000s.
What knot are you running on the leader to hook?
what about a weight? or does the weight or the bait just keep everything on the bottom

Also should i use a float?
I fish brazos I use mullet with a float or sometimes just a Carolina rig with a 1 or 2 ounce slip weight.
@@johngalvan2346a float would help visually to see if it’s being taken

I don't know how u only let them run 15sec. Around here unless you're just lucky it's more like 15hrs!😂
Same as here in AR. It's hard to figure it out here
Literally just caught my first spotted gar on Saturday with a piece of hot dog 😅
What if they run for 5 secs n stop? How long to wait then
What type of fish are you using as bait
gizzard shad
Just making sure, no weight?
i dont use weights 99% of the time

I fish in Laredo too
U need wire leader bro n treble hooks or mono but 80 pound but its better wired since its a river

I caught a 42 inch spotted in december on light tackle thought it was gonna be gone

I caught one at night one time with a construction light shining on the water and a rooster tail. Anyone else ever tried this?
Your boat leaks…
just a little 😅
Yeah that line is gonna snap
sir i do this daily.
Better get a steel leader first 😆
