Toyota announced the imminent arrival of a Toyota Etios replacement and just a few weeks later, here we are driving the newcomer, the Toyota Starlet. However, you may be looking at this vehicle and thinking that it looks very familiar, and that's because the Toyota Starlet is a re-badged Suzuki Baleno, which has been on sale in South Africa for a few years now.
Confused? So were we. Join our video guy Ciro De Siena on a journey to discover the differences, if any, between the Starlet and the Baleno. We also cover the pricing of the Starlet versus the Baleno, and offer our advice on which one you should buy.

I'm actually starting to see the Baleno/Starlet viable options for my first car
Bought mine today
How is it
Wow congratulations!!🥳🥳🥳 ....how is it treating you?
Check my quick summary...but its awesome and must say its really worth buying.
Its a tin can! Please exchange it if you dont wanna lose your life this soon.! Its in India for over a decade now and we regret it till date!
@@sidhantbehera2644 actually thay change car safety features according to country's government standards.
I’m about to purchase 1 as my very 1st car.....your review is much appreciated👌🤝
This channel is so awesome and Ciro is to SA motoring journalism what Matt Watson is to the UK. Ciro is a legend!
The sad part is if you watch a carwow and a Cars.co.za review you'll know more about the car than the sales person.
I had my Starlet for 25 yrs the only big thing was a Timing Belt
I got the automatic on Saturday. I had a polo vivo before, the difference in size and comfort is noticeable. I'm enjoying it 🙂
How much are you paying in installment
How's the general feel and ride quality Sbu?
This is the info I was looking for. Thanks.
Does that mean the boot is bigger compared to a polo?
Does it struggle to drive up hill?
Excellent review,on point as always!
Great job showing a full size luggage bag that fits...nobody did this! Great video for just what I need to check how big this car is for rental cars!
Good reviews, all the way from Zambia
yes you have answered the big question Starlet is the way.. Thank you
Just purchased mine a few days ago. Thanks for the tips Ciro!
Very good review...informative and enjoying!
I really liked this review. I came across it while trying to understand the value of different rental cars (I want to rent for 6 weeks and while the RAV4 was affodable at face value, the extra mileage cost was horrendous!). I think there's a great opportunity to do a 'rental car comparison', because generally the rental companies have lower / lowest spec cars - that will help people a lot... maybe even helpful for people who buy/sell rental fleet hand-me-downs.. Either way, nice review!
Got mine on Thursday, our fourth Toyota!! Love it!
Wow, I love this car. I love the boot space and the performance. It's awesome. 👌👌👌👌. It's worth getting it
Love your reviews 👌
Awesome useable review Ciro.
I am loving the Starlet, looks good.
Thats not a starlet
It's suzuki baleno.. Toyota is using their car only applying their logo
I go to Signal Hill quite frequently, I hope to run into you filming one day. That would be awesome!
No need for a warranty, because nothing will ever go wrong with it. My fuel economy is 4L/100km on the motorway and 6L in the city. What an awesome car. I love my Baleno!
Hi, are you sure about 6L in the city? Which model do you have? The 1.4L one? I am looking to buy the 2022 Baleno , it claims 5.4L per 100kms but have a hard time believing that when its a 1.5L engine. I have a 1.6 diesel that only gets 5.2L per 100kms. Thanks
@@kyledamonze8739 I have the 1.4L manual. 6 l in the city in summer with always warm engine. Worst case is 7.5l, driving only 1 km every day to the shops and back with a cold engine.
@@wolfschindler8921 Okay thanks for replying, my diesel also gets 7.5L for such short trips so the consumption probably exactly the same. How would you say the drive is, do you feel the bumps? My wife is pregnant and hates my car cz of the sports suspension on it. lastly hows the power? I will be coming from a 120kw car so want something that can still more uphills decently. Thanks in advance if u are able to reply again
@@kyledamonze8739 Yes, you feel the bumps, but I like that. The car has a power to weight ratio of about 10 kg/hp. It can go up fairly steep hills in top gear doing 100km/h @ 2,400 rpm. In contrast to he reviewer, I think it has good torque considering it has a normally aspirated engine. I almost never rev the engine over 2500 rpm unless overtaking or certain conditions. The car is super reliable and very economical. It is not a race car. The car is very light and handles well. It leaves a 1L turbo Polo behind due to it's low weight. Hope this helps.
It does help alot, thank you so much. Keep well
That was an awesome review 👌
This was really helpful, thanks
I'm genuinely impressed with how that suitcase disappeared in the boot
I getting a Starlet in couple weeks... keen...looks a good choice...
Nice review Ciro. Good value for money. Good budget car.
Love your work bro
Had a look on Toyota's site and auto models. XR @ R272K vs XS @ R235K I'd rather go for the XS and save the R40K with the very small differences in spec! Very interesting insert, thanks!
Awsome! With lot of information
Great review
@0:58 in my country in the northern most part of Europe, the rebadged Rav4, is called Suzuki A-Cross. Its delivered in only one trim but the model is very good equipped, and both Toyota and Suzuki only sell the chargeable hybrid version, 306 hp, 0-100 km/h in just 6 sec!
I’m definitely getting this car 👌🏾
Best reviews ever!
Sounds like a good buy. Thanks for the tips.
Keep it up Ciro!!
Nice work bro,
thank you so much for this.
We need to buy a runabout for work. Have to chose between this xr version or a new polo. Not the Vivo, the proper polo. Any advice?
You really answered the big questions for me😂
Definitely getting one soon
Get a low mileage 2 year Suzuki Baleno for around R140k. I think this is proof as to what value branding/badge makes. Toyota will always have a significantly higher resale value even if it sells rebranded cars. We can argue all we want about this somewhat controversial topic but that Toyota badge makes a world of a difference in terms of perceived value, reputation, resale etc.
Agreed and I disagree also. Suzuki is an incredibly reliable brand. I think perceptions hv changed. Suzukis r everywhere nw tho. Great advice to buy a high spec 2 year old even a 1 year old and saving thousands. If Toyota say unlimited 8 year warranty tht tells u these cars r bulletproof
Hi Ciro. Can you do a review on the Toyota yaris 1.5 xs cvt? Would like to hear your opinion....
It will be my first car i love it
Would be nice go see a starlet gt turbo
Great review Ciro!
Are we going to have the Toyota Corolla Cross in South Africa?
Great review! Just think how good a car must be for a massive brand like Toyota to put their badge on it!
My anxiety got triggered everytime he looked away from the road 🙈😂 Like he's on a mountain!
I really like your videos. So honest and experienced. Bought this car (xr manual) about a month ago. Been driving it long distance and in town. Your fuel economy figures are weird. Maybe you drove it in 3rd gear 6 000 revs for two hours.
I got 18.9 on the highway, two persons and a ton of luggage with aircon. And about 19.5 one person with aircon in town. (Km/l) Really a brilliant little car. Feels like a mercedes. Kind of.
Toyota starlet?
@@khangelaflatela3339 yes. 2021 toyota starlet xr manual
This is amazing. It will definitely rock a few Chinese boats 🤔
As much as I love the Starlet and Baleno together, feel like this will more than poach Baleno sales...insurance companies might jack up the premiums on Balenos as a Toyota-equivalent, hijackers will take chances on the Baleno as a Toyota-equivalent...Toyota’s involvement in this I believe will drastically affect everyone’s take on the innocent, perfectly-fine-as-is Suzuki
You are preaching to me,we are currently saving up to buy the XR cash
Ciro, maybe consider adding in a bit about spares and service costs. I'm really interested in that...not sure if others would be too. Maintenance cost are important.
For sure when you have so many people who keep cars for more than 5 years.
@@seanfenwick exactly...the long term repercussions of being a car owner. Or buying a car secondhand even, out of the the service/maintenence plan.
Maintenance costs are a huge factor
Don't buy it bro. Its' engine is made by Suzuki, not Toyota. Its pointless to buy a Toyota car if its engine is not made by them. You can go for a Toyota car with their own engine.
@@vijaykumars4653 What's wrong with Suzuki engines?
I have a baleno here in the Netherlands with a 1240 cc 90 hp.
In the summer about 21 km a liter in winter 1 on 17 or 18 km.
No hills here.
Nice video,
Though I would've like to see more shots of the exterior at the back with the boot closed,
juss as there were many shots of the exterior at the front.
What is the watt of the radio because i want to put different speakers in mine
Great review, you can change it from kml to lkm with going into the menu on the display, our 1.4 swift which strangely makes more power than the Baleno 1.4, we have 70kw and 130nm, our consumption on a combined cycle is 5.3 litres per 100km, and we have 120 000km on it, Suzuki has such amazing reliability and efficiency
Maybe the swift is a bit lighter that's why.
@@yuchejacobs639 The Swift 1.4 was the previous generation if I remember correctly and surprisingly the Baleno is almost 100kg lighter I think due it's new HEARTECT platform shared with the new Swift too.
That's impressive economy beating the manufacturer numbers - have you been satisfied with the power of the 1.4?
@@ricetheories so it's a mixed feeling, I've got the auto and it's got from the factory a very slow throttle response on take off, its a quick car and nippy once it gets going, you can fix this issue by investing in a better throttle control for the ecu, however without traction control, it might make the car a bit unstable at fast take off if I'm being honest, other than that I must also talk about the pearl white, after being parked outside and waxed maybe once a month it has showroom gloss and sparkle, the auto is also an amazing companion in traffic
@@ricetheories oh and also if you care about engine vibrations on start up and idle, it is amazing, you barley even notice its on unless you look at the rpm, and it's still like that over 120k km later, very low vibrations, but that's what Mr Suzuki has been known for in the industry from Toyota
I've had a baleno for 2 years now,its a very reliable and is a
low fuel consumption car
Which engine does it have in it? And what's the consumption like? I'm starting to appreciate Suzuki more and more as a brand
How is the noise in the cabin at speed (120km/h plus)? I'm interested in getting a used Baleno myself.
@@tshupetsomonedi let's just say you may not get very far past 120
@@tshupetsomonedi there is no noise, unless u open the windows then the wind gushing in is really irritating
@@TrevzE36 I don't really go much last that point (at least not In a car anyway) 😅 but I want to know that when I'm in the highway it won't be ear numbing noisy. I drove a Renault Kwid for two years so I know that noise last 110 very well.😅
Value wise especially with the warranty going for 6 to 8 years unlimited kms warranty it's definitely fantastic value..it's definitely going to be cheaper over a long time vs a VW Polo Vivo with a much shorter warranty
Really... is that the Toyota warranty
Nice work, I stay in the rough village, can you please show us when it climbs a speed hump, want to see if it won't beat the bumper. Or just point the camera underneath on a distance.
This is exactly what I would like to know as well
Same here
Hi Sir. Which would you buy for personal use between the Starlet vs Polo Mswenko??? You've reviewed both.
STARLET
What would have been interesting Ciro is whether the Toyota starlet does come with Toyota's WiFi
you are sooo funny... love this show
Well, In India Baleno is Baleno and Starlet is Glanza! Just wanted to share. Btw, beautiful view guys!
and glanza is baleno with toyota logo
Someone explain how can company just copy paste
Finally got the answer
I own an etios and it's amazing.....its nippy for a small car.
The difference a badge can make!!
Thank you
How's the spare? Biscuit or mag?
In India, the Suzuki Baleno is rebadged as the Toyota Glanza. Just that here it gets the K12 engine instead of the K14. Although it's one of the best selling cars in India, here it has garnered a lot of hate for its super light build and poor scoring in GNCAP tests. The Baleno / Glanza / Starlet are all manufactured and exported by Maruti Suzuki, the biggest subsidiary of Suzuki Japan.
Edit: Since the Vitara Brezza (cheaper Vitara / Indian Vitara) is also soon going to be launched in SA, you guys can expect the Toyota Urban Cruiser to follow. Urban Cruiser is the rebadged version of Vitara Brezza.
Like nobody knows this
Is this thing better to drive than a polo Tsi?
I want one!!!
How much fuel is in the reserve tank when the light goes on .Automatic
Watching this video makes me miss the mountainous views really badly. Parts of the UK are beautiful, but it doesn't hold a candle to SA.
So true, I’m in Australia and think the same thing
Hi anyone who owns the car how do you open the boot from inside? And how is fuel consumption
I'm in between thoughts nice little car but someone lost the real meaning behind the name Starlet the older ones which I own three of were pocket rockets and when you say 14km per litre doesnt look like any company came very far as from 20 years ago my Starlet GT turbo gives me 13km per litre driving in town great review though I would be interested in one
Please bring her back🧡🧡
Buying mine this month 😍 Xs model is more value for money.
All very cute, but what about the safety rating
i have Suzuki Baleno...bought two months ago
Nice vehicle.
Wish I had one!!
Any helper??
Interesting
Very good starlet
Nice review I just Need a nice comfortable efficient car. Don't need too much power
Toyota is making fashionable cars now... hope they are reliable
What road is he driving on? I am visiting Cape Town soon and would love to drive that road during my trip. Thanks in advance!
Oh lol. My bad and thank you Ciro. He mentions the location at 4:50
signal hill road.. beautiful
I'm indian owner this car.. fabulous car . But I have suzuki badged BALENO .. GO FOR IT.. SMOOTH REFINED ENGINE
Toyota should rather offer an options list for this car. A touch screen infotainment system in a Starlet is only available on Xr which is around R260k...you can get a second hand Corolla Hatch for that price. The Xs trim only offers alloy wheels over the Xi which is pointless. You'd ideally want to get a Xi and add on the infotainment system.
In India it's called Nexa Baleno & Toyota Glanza
I feel like not enough people know about how efficient you can get a diesel corolla to be.
It's unfortunate they didn't take any inspiration from the old kp starlets which are awesome
I would have rather brought back a whole new look conquest, which was a great car.
I need to get this, is there an automatic drive?
Umm HE SAID
I just purchased starlet Xs Auto. Its a great car, the problem which came with the car is the brake shoes noise but Toyota fixed it.
Hi does it struggle on hills
I live in Australia and we bought a brand new Suzuki Beleno GLX and this Toyita Starlet you reviewed in this video is exactly the same as our Suzuki Beleno except for two things the Beleno is automatic and there are Toyota badges on it you cannot buy Belenos in Australia any more we paid $25000 aud for our Beleno and the Beleno GL was the cheapest car available in Australia cheaper than the small crapy Kia and the small Crappy Cinese MG any Suzuki beats any Kia or Chinese built MG fir buikd quality and reliability and Toyota to but there badge on any car they have to be very reliable case in point l have a 1997 Toyota Hilux cab chassis with an aluminum tray rear wheel drive which has done 430000kms which all Toyotas should do without any problems and the engine is still very good also when l bought it about 4 years ago it cost me $1500 aud have spent over $1500 aud still have a couple things to fix it up they are selling now for aud $5000 to $6000 which just shows you and some of them have more kilmeters than mine and our Suzuki Beleno has apreciated by aud $800 because they are no longer sold in Australia as for the Jimny thats another story
It's like Suzuki Baleno ?
One of my relatives still keep the 1990's Starlet and modified into an offroader. Let's see how tough is this Suzuki Baleno rebadged. I personally don't like Maruti India (Suzuki)
Even i hated etios to the core.... agree with you
please compare with the suzuki beleno
I think toyuki will be killing the market with the starleno .....south africa loves a badge.
My choice will be the original suzuki.
Agree with you there. Why steal the design of the Suzuki Baleno, can Toyota not come up with their own?
Please help! Which car insurance company is the best and the cheapest?
i will buy starlet
The warranty in India is the other way around. Toyota offers 5 years at no extra cost and that is what is driving the consumers to the Toyota showrooms if at all. Price difference between the baleno - Starlet/Glanza is perhaps 2000-4000 Rand depending on the model.
We have more of Suzuki loyalists than of Toyota's. In India, the only successful product in the last 5 years is the Fortuner!
Is that a rebadge Suzuki Baleno?
