So how long do you spend practicing a song before you are ready to record? My practice format is "don't practice until you get it right but practice until you can't get it wrong" no doubt that's how you do it too. What you are doing is not easy, it's so perfect.
Thanks Gerald. I'd say I pretty much follow your format! I try to listen to the song and pay attention to the things a drummer is doing that I might not notice when I'm playing along. When I get to the kit, I continually play through the song until it is like muscle memory!
Well, that was incredible! I close my eyes and it sounds just like the great Bernard Purdie. Even the little changes that you made, to me, sounded like Bernard himself would have done it. Tremendous feel, groove, and dynamics! Well done!
Nicely done! One of the best SD tunes ever (highlighted by BOTH of Carlton's solos) but Bernard P really sets the tone. I've seen other videos where they feature Churck Rainey's isolated bass parts - and, as a great a player as he is, IMO he relies SO HEAVILY on BP to make his playing sound so good on this track. Keep up the great work, Tate!
Salutation once again Mr. Tate, another well-executed performance, sir ;^) ♪ What a difference for drum recordings (still damn good though) close miking makes, Since I'm new to your channel, I heard the earlier close-miked stuff first (Lol...).♪ Peace, and I intend to binge-watch all your SD and Donald Fagen's cover, so don't be too surprised if you have other messages from me. Lol! I definitely (for more contemporary music at least) prefer close miking the drums. When a lot of my earlier videos were filmed, I simply didn't have the gear or capacity yet!
@@tate_berkey As I said you managed to have amazing sound quality results before having the whole recording gear, but the difference is so obvious. Definitely, a smart move to have purchased mikes, because of viewers. Tate, you’re a freak my friend! Great job. I’m just “beginning” to try and do a drum cover. Just did my first one with lots of mistakes by John P. Kee called “Any Day”. Have lots to learn about mixing. Kind Regards, Tom Pollock
Another phenomenal piece of work, Tate. Most drummers who cover Kid Charlemegne hit cymbals at times where Bernard didn't hit one. But you never did that... not even once. You hit that perfect pocket of the "loose perfection" of the Purdie Shuffle. Amazing! I'd love to see you cover a Senri Kawaguchi selection. "Onyx" would be great. But "See You Much Later" would really be awesome. Album version: ua-cam.com/video/DLxRhZpfJe8/v-deo.html Live: ua-cam.com/video/hl0vSc-kEIg/v-deo.html

Just discovered you and your channel. Awesome drumming. Watched some of your Chicago covers now this. Wonderful steely Dan cover. Thank You.
