I was just gonna write this but figured someone in the comments might have been quicker.
Henin won minimum 1 slam for 5 straight years 2003-07 , maybe he meant to say that, but 7 in total.
5 would elevate swiatek to the heights of sharapova and hingis.

Thank you for doing this, Andy! It's an invaluable insight that only someone who played the game on that level could give. It's interesting to suddenly be "reminded", mid-talk, that we're listening to a former number 1, grand slam winner, multiple Winbledon finalist, five Masters 1000 and the list goes on... You deliver the analysis in a professional, detailed, but also humble way, which makes us forget for a second who it is that is talking. Your podcast is a gift to the tennis community, and I am one to spread the word. Keep up with the amazing work!

You are underselling Zverev here. Sunday final is a banger. Has all the tools, in Australia Alcaraz looks bad in hindsight because Zverev served 85%. Hit the crap out of the ball, was standing next to the baseline. Couldn't play his game. Indian Wells suit him like a glove. On the other side it's Zverev worst court. 4 to 5 sets on Sunday, but Alcaras needs that forearm at best or he is losing.
    At recap please take on:
What means to win with meniscus injury
    Rune Zverev, banger match
Sabalenka's matches before being sick; had a 20 something set winning streak in Grand Slams
What Swiatek dominating on clay means. These girls all play good. It's underselling what Swiatek does, 1 lost match in best of 3. Way too good

Actually what you're saying about Sinner with his fitness due to the hip, we can also say that carlos was missing a lot of things in this match because he had to stop using his racket for a while and didn't play in a high pressure match since Indian Wells.
For me that match was fair and they were even going into this, the difference was made by Carlos taking his chance and not being passive when he saw the finish line around the corner.
This kid has that bravery, saw that in the Wimbledon finals, saw that again in the 5th yesterday. Champ!

    • @samy29987
      @samy29987 3 місяці тому +1

There is no equivalency when you cannot move vs you cannot hit balls. It's not the same limitation, Roddick said it himself. It's not an apples to apples comparison.
Yes, Alcaraz took his chances but with a fully fit Sinner, who knows. But ifs don't exist, Alcaraz won fair and square.

@@samy29987 I see Jannik is starting to have some fans ahah but in my vision I really hope for Sinner that he doesn't think that way because when you're 2 sets to 1 up and you're 2 games away from the end and then in the 5th you're battling until the end. The match was there, the level was even.. It is obvious that sinner in the 4th when he had that look over the finish line he did not go to the next level to clinch it.
Carlos in the 5th when he was up he was accepting mistakes, going for his shots and dictating whenever he could. There is no hip in that defeat. The question is "was it possible for sinner to win ? " the answer is obviously yes so then it is all mindset, game plan, bravery..

@@2v437 exactly. at 4-4 in the 4th set, up 2 sets to 1, the match was there for the taking.
but alcaraz hung tough while sinner had the easier situation, he just had to keep his serve to force a tie-break.
he faltered. thats a mental thing.
also, once behind in the beginning of the 5th set, he hung with alacaraz all the way till the end.

I think Paolini played really good match against Rybakina, in my opinion much better then Andrea vs Sabalenka, as Aryna was not feeling good. I'm not saying that Andreeva is not good, she is grat talent but her advancing to semi was a bit of luck. I still think Sinner would beat Alcaraz if he will be 100% healthy. The first set from Sinner was just too good, Alcaraz was totally lost. Taking into consideration that Zverev is in good shape, he really has a chance to win.

Exactly what I tell baseball players. You have to hit balls coming at you triple digits and move in multiple directions to get to it. The more proper analogy is you have a racket and can instantly morph from a hitter to a fielder IE getting back a defensive or neutralizing shot. A baseball player would hit .085 with that mentality and a pro tennis player would lose every match. What really makes tennis the all around hardest is you have to develop a wide array of skills and techniques to be a world class player. I'd bet you could teach a Randy Johnson or Aldos Chapman to serve in the 140s and have a crazy slice serve in a few months hitting 100 per day but would they have the other skill requirements to be good at tennis? And then the endurance factor and mental aspect of keeping your game level for hours and a couple of weeks to win a major that's mind boggling.

Andy did you think at 2-1 and 4-5 30-15 Sinner serving get a high bouncing ball aprox 10ft from the net, Sinner lets it bounce hits the smash just out! so instead of 40-15 its 30-30 pressure now on Sinner instead of it then 5-5 its set over! Do you think that miss affected his mind set? Also thought Sinner serve was very inconsistent first 55% but worse was he never found it when he really needed it where as I thought Alcaraz found his first serve when he needed it! Wide consensus today Sinner-Alcaraz match was relatively poor, for them. Or at least the first three sets. Very few 'exciting' rallies.

So much for consensus as this was a great match with very high levels from both players. It is harder to get into tiebreakers in a clay court match because it is the least serve dominant surface. It may not have quite had the twist and turns, but the match was a tour de force. Both players dealt with minor cramping that did not noticeably affect play. I won't call it one of the greatest matches of all time as I suspect Sinner later in the match (as he stated) wasn't quite 100% with the hip which agrees with Andy's take. For absolute level this was by far the best Alcaraz versus Sinner match so far; it was electric.

@@meles3740 You won't find many in Tennis Land, or any, agreeing with you. Hopefully the final is more of a ''classic''.

@@miketomlin6040 Tennis land must be a swamp infested with Big3 sycophants. I'm happy to have Andy Roddick on my side. Enjoying the fools on twitter or where do you ingest this swill? I'd really like to know. The classic intelligence test: If you think their earlier matches were better or higher "quality", you need to reevaluate how you watch tennis. Compare them point to point side by side and there is no comparison as both players have improved considerably (especially Sinner).
Zverev at this point is very highly under rated on clay. ARod was over the moon on the final in his latest video.

As much as my heart says and wants Sascha to win this badly for everything he has been through over last few years after coming so close to winning a slam , my brain is saying Carlos will win it in 4 sets :/

It's going to be a super tough match, I predict It the same day the draw appeared... Alcaraz wants to take the revenge to the fact that Zverev won Nadal, spaniards are like that.

Oh come on Andy, understand that you want to keep interest in the game but the statement that sinner and alcaraz are at the same level as prime roger rafa and novak is ridiculous. If any of those three were in that match yesterday in their prime it would of been 3-0 comfortably. No one who watched that match would think any otherwise.

Hi Roddick great podcast (I am a tennis youtuber myself) and love tennis and have watched this beautiful sport over 30 years (I am in your age) love watching your show as well you have tennis knowledge that's for sure.
Not only are you a Grand Slam champion, and a former world number one, you also have huge tennis knowledge which is really fun to hear, and watch.
However, I have to correct you about one thing you were never 2 points away from winning that epic Wimbledon final in 2009 against Roger. Of course you weren't far away and you gave Federer a hell of a run for his money, and had a huge lead in that second set tie-break with 6-2 where Roger won 6 straight points and finally won that second set tie-break 8-6.
And you had 2 break points in that 8-8 game in the fifth set where Roger saves both, with big first serves in one of the break points, and the other with a drive forehand volley after landing a big first serve in the second break point as well which he saved both of them, more or less with huge first serves.
Of course you were not far away from winning this epic final. Arguably the closest you came to winning against Roger in all 3 Wimbledon finals you lost to him.
However, you were never 2 points away from winning this Wimbledon final in 2009, you were significantly far more away than that because Roger Federer served first all the time in that fifth, and deciding set.
So just wanted to correct you on your claim that you were 2 points away from winning the Wimbledon final in 2009 because that was certainly not the case my friend.
    Cheers😉

Wow, amazing podcast, some of the comment being super technical but what can you expect from a former champion…
Alcaraz in full flight will be very hard to beat.I would just hope he did not have to grunt like a cave man all the time. Hopefully at some point they will put some rules in place to reduce that issue that is rightfully hated by many
As a prediction for the match I think either Alcaraz in three (more likely) or Zverev in five

Andy, you have the 09 wimbledon backwards. You outplayed him all day, you won your sets by breaking, he scraped out tiebreaks and only broke you on the last point of the match. It was the inverse of what happened to Roger 10 years later.
I hope you're just being humble and polite.
