If I were you, I'd add some contraption to destroy any basalt not picked up by the player to avoid item entity lag while they despawn. Like have the player stand on an iron bar on top of lava, so the basalt goes straight into fire if not picked up immediately.
A cool way to emphasize the on-demand storage-less nature of the farm would be to add a lava chute at the collection point that opens to automatically incinerate any left-over items once the farm is turned back off. You could also add a panel of buttons marked with common quantities that add the corresponding amount of time to a monostable hopper timer (@ 2M/hour: 1 shulker = ~3.5 seconds, 9 shulkers = ~30 seconds, 36 shulkers = ~120 seconds) so you can press the "1 shulker box" button twice and have it dispense just over two boxfulls of basalt.
Hey Mango, I know this might be a ways away, but I've been thinking that an interesting and fun follow up to this series could be a randomizer challenge. Singleplayer randomizers can get tedious and boring and easy to lose motivation and direction, but multiplayer can get rid of a lot of the tedium and is obviously more fun to play in general. I would recommend having some clear end game goals like you have in this series, such as "automate (as much as possible) the generation of every item possible". I think you could do a lot of really interesting automation that forces you to adapt designs to take into account the new drops.
