We laugh at YT lessons, but in the 1960's at a major university I took a full-semester course in music theory (classes, homework, exams), and they didn't cover half of what Ms. Terzian covers in a few minutes. And frankly, she covers it better.

As I have been teaching myself to play piano, I had a lightbulb moment about musical structures, and that is the fact that "intervals" are the KEY to music. In this video, you mapped out the interval structures of these chords, and showed how they can be applied to any number of different keys. It is these 'distance relationships" so to speak that are the underlying structures that cause our brain to identify these sounds and their associated feelings. I like to re-visit your videos because I find that as I progress along this path, I notice things I hadn't noticed before. Nicely done!

Oh, this is awesome. I've been using these chords for years in my compositions but have never known the theory behind them. That's what happens when you learn to play by ear. After 47 years I am proficient at playing and composing and utterly hopeless at understanding and explaining. I have now subscribed to your channel and look forward to viewing many more of your excellent theory lessons. Many thanks, Gracie.

Thank you so much for subscribing, Richard! I’m so happy you found this video helpful. That’s very impressive you can compose and play without understanding everything! It shows you have a truly deep sense of musicality - which I think is very hard to learn if you don’t have it naturally. Music theory can be learned quite easily.. so soon you will be unstoppable! 🙂

@@GracieTerzian Aw, bless you for writing that. An example of writing without fully understanding, should you feel inclined or have the time... no worries if you don't. ua-cam.com/video/eIrpyvXIf3k/v-deo.html (shame I didn't nail it, though)

@@richardnejman5231 Wow!!!! I can't believe you don't "understand" what you are playing... but even if you did, I'd still be blown away! You are brilliant!

@@GracieTerzian Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to this piece. I'm blown away that you're blown away, especially as I'm half way through watching your NYC concert and have found myself transfixed and in awe of your melodic sense.... your melodies are simply gorgeous and your singing so delicate and heartfelt. You are a breath of fresh air. Wishing England was a bit closer to the USA so I could come to a gig or two... or many. I am definitely going to learn a lot from you.
