Korg Wavestate SE Review | Unboxing and First Impressions

- I instantly fell in love with the Korg Wavestation when I first played one in 1992. And when Korg announced the Wavestate in 2019, I instantly knew I had to have one. And when Korg released the Wavestate SE in 2023, a dream came true. They made a Wavestate that looks and feels a whole lot like my old Wavestation.
I wanted to share the unboxing, first impressions, and some sound from this beautiful and truly unique instrument. Thanks for stopping by.

A beautiful instrument but why is the display screen so small?
a three-month update after having purchased the Wavestate SE....It has lived up to everything as advertised and more.
I was a fan of the original Wavestate and was on the edge about spending some big bucks on this beauty ( thought about just using an aftertouch controller keyboard instead) but I'm happy I made the right decision. Zero buyer's remorse or doubts, which do occur after most synth purchases.
The after-touch Keybed, extra keys and extra octaves on the SE really do enhance my mediocre performance ability and expression as advertised, it is really inspirational to use and a tactile pleasure.
I'm happy to buy and use cheaper gear, still own and use an Arturia Microfreak, ASM Hydrasynth explorer, a Novation Mininova and a Behringer Deepmind 6 all of which I still enjoy and rate as great fun synths. Going to stick my original Wavestate on Ebay at a low price so someone else can enjoy the experience.
The prize in my synth setup is the Arturia Polybrute which is brilliant but for me, on a personal level the Wavestate SE just hits the right spot, it almost feels like we're all looking for that synth soul mate and I've been tremendously lucky enough to find it.
Not saying I won't experience more GAS in the future, some of the upcoming Beringer units look terrific and affordable fun.
The recent Yamaha Montage M8x looks and sounds stunning (though I'd have to save for a couple of years to get one)

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to all of the wonderful comments on this video. I have been busy with other projects. Hoping to get back in the studio this month and do some more sharing. Gear and stuff is constantly changing, but I"ll make sure to include the list in the description on the next video. Thanks for the suggestion.

so many people are fooled into buying vsts in a fancy box with knobs
Some of us love both VSTs and hardware together.
@@RussNixon i like hardware synths too but lets face it a whole generation are being sold vsts in a box with knobs.....
@@cfcreative1 you forgot to mention how expensive this is, you can get the OG unit for less than 1/4 of the $ and it sounds the same.
Try making patches on that screen, you need to tether it to a computer, which is not what hardware is supposed to do.
Korg is a running joke with their SE series.
It is a little weird that they sell the VST version of the same exact thing, but I don’t get the same creative spark from some VSTs that I do with hardware. There’s an X factor when the hardware is a good match to the sound engines it drives. The original Wavestate sounded amazing but never felt right. Sure I could MIDI it to any one of my synths that I actually like to play, but it just didn’t do it for me. The SE totally does. It doesn’t have to make sense. ❤
@@RussNixon try making a patch directly off the Wavestate and let us know how you go.
Fwiw, I have the OG WS and would never dream of using the 2 inch screen to do anything other than setting up MIDI channels.

It's really good. Not quite "great" in my opinion, which would be how I feel about my Montage/Motif 7 keybeds, which feel glassy smooth to me. Wavestate SE is really really good, but not quite that good. :)

The walls are covered in cork. Not my doing, the house came that way and I just left it. Since I'm a keyboard player, the noise in the room isn't a huge problem for recording. :)

What brand is the stand? Is it StandTastic?
Yes! I love these stands. They're so incredibly solid, and they just disappear. Plenty of space for my legs underneath, and no bouncing or vibration.

@RussNixon Hello Russ. I see you also have a MPC Key 61 as well. Haven't see you do a video on it. Would like to hear how you pair it up with the Wavestate SE for ambient tracks.
Yes, I love the MPC sounds and workflow. I'm still learning it, I haven't had much time to just sit with it and learn yet. I love how different it is from the typical workstation sounds, and it's so easy to record ideas quickly with it. And the ambient stuff is really unique, compared to what I'm used to. Thanks for your message!
@@RussNixon Thanks for getting back to me. I just bought a MPC Key 61 last week and added it to the Wavestate SE with the Wavestate mk1 and Modwave on another shelf using a Stantastic stand. Already in less than a week it has contributed to my ambient/electronic tracks. I really wanted a Nautilus but the touch screen, drum pad, key bed and work flow won me over.
What stand are you using for those three synths? Asking because I like the angle and depth.

Yep, it's a Standtastic 103KSB. I love them, so stable and the adjustability is outstanding. Wouldn't be great for gigging, but in the studio they're really great!
i have vsynth gt, jd800, montage but i impressed much from this magnificent synth. i have it. if u purchase and load the some packs u will be more satisfied.
Thanks for the tip! I don't get a lot of studio time these days, still have much to digest. I've barely scratched the surface with my Montage and MPC too!
