Such an informative video & so well explained 🤩🙏🧘♀️
@Emily Rowell Yoga This was great Emily, many thanks. I'm a 54 year old reasonably fit for my age female, going through the menopause. Recently bereaved, I'm looking to try a type of yoga to help me deal my grief, depression and anxiety. Also need a change of direction in my life. Your brief overview of the different types of yoga has been very useful to me. I'm looking forward to seeing your 'Yoga off the mat' series. Best wishes from Lynzi, peace and love to you.👍🏾❤🌻💚
Thank you emily🕉️🙏
HATHA YOGA
Most forms of yoga in the West can be classified as Hatha Yoga. Hatha simply refers to the practice of physical yoga postures, meaning your Ashtanga, vinyasa, Iyengar and Power Yoga classes are all Hatha Yoga. The word “hatha” can be translated two ways: as “willful” or “forceful,” or the yoga of activity, and as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the yoga of balance. Hatha practices are designed to align and calm your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for meditation.

That's really helpful, thank you for sharing :)
Hi, how can someone interested get in touch with you?
@@yas6877 need help regarding yoga? Would be grateful to help 🙏
@@EmilyRowellYoga great response. 🩷
Iyengar embraces yin yoga. As you correct your alignment, you stay, relax into the pose What you however observe is the level of resistance in each pose (level of tightness or stiffness), which reveals your emotional state.
Thank you Tanya, that's a really nice way of explaining Iyengar :)
Hatha yoga is powerful AF, tried it 1st time 10 years ago & became overcome with emotion at the end.
Thank you so much for this! I am very new to yoga, and I just started to notice that there were indeed differences. I love to sit in my poses for awhile, because I have a back injury that I started using yoga to manage. The flows were way too fast for me, and I was getting frustrated with myself. Now that I watched your video I will look for Hatha, Iyengar, and Yin classes. Now, I can focus like I need to, relax, and accept my slower journey with yoga!
Thanks for your comment, yes it sounds like a slower paced style would suit you better :)
Yoga is a journey and it is there to heal you. But unfortunately most people have packaged and branded yoga as a commodity all throughout the world. And the whole point of yoga is dharana - one-pointedness/focus and then meditation/dhyana. So just focus and breathe. Pranayama is super effective more than asanas. Go to a good teacher like mine Paul Dallaghan! He is best of both - asana and pranayama. Or to any good Iyengar teacher who will help you fix your problem! But iyengar style focuses more on asana.
@@EmilyRowellYoga yog is bhartiya not cristion you remember 😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌😌
If I may make one recommendation, if you like being in poses for a while, really focus on alignment, flexibility, strength etc - def try Iyengar
I had tons of lower back probs and bad posture. Iyengar changes all that and gives you the leanest longest muscles unlike any other form.
Cat de Rham is single best Iyengar teacher / type in Iyengar and Cat’s name into UA-cam and you’ll see what I mean
Bikram did not found this style : His guru from the Ghosh lineage had taught him, and these 26+2 set has been passed on from generations, he just made it famous in America
Thank you for sharing this. Do you by chance know the original Sanskrit name?
That’s mostly Hatha yoga and who cares where comes from, it’s actually the best healing yoga for me and my hormones for sure. I am a spiritual Guru Ayurveda Doctor also and more Om Shanti 🙏
@@irenedagostino9203 in the Indian yogi tradition a Guru would always recognize the true source and be respectful to it.
@@irenedagostino9203I care where it comes from
When you got to Bikram yoga and mentioned there’s a documentary available I quickly went and watched the documentary first and then finished this video. So thank you for sharing, I learnt a lot heheh ♥️
A very disturbing documentary but important to understand the dangers of yoga becoming cult-like!
video name ?
I love Vinyasa and Yin yoga ♥️
wonderful comprehensive and to the point video!! great job cheers from NY!!!
I had no idea of the detailed differences of these yoga practises! Thank you for helping me understand better 🙏🏻
Well you still don't unless you understand the essence. Raja, Jyana, Karma, Bhakti are the paths of yoga and actually the essence of yoga! And then there were just two forms or types of yoga - just hatha and ashtanga. Hatha belongs to the Nath tradition with Matsyendranath being the founder, so to speak and Gorakshanath as his chief disciple. There are other prominent pioneers in the Hatha tradition. The credit for asthanga goes to Maharishi Patanjali. Everything else is marketing and branding from different people! Swami Viveknanda who introduced Raja Yoga to the west, the true essence and then Krishnamacharya with main disciples BKS Iyengar and Pathabhi Jois worked on asana. Swami Kuvalyananda on pranayama mainly and asana too. That is the crux. Personally I find yin makes sense but both Hot Yoga and Power Yoga in my eyes is blasphemy! Especially because yoga empowers everyone and any one who follows any yogic path! :)
Thank you for taking the time to make and edit this video. I love finding no filler/bluff youtubers that go straight to teaching you. Thank you again Emily
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you found the video helpful :)

Thank you! You have cited each yoga type very clearly and with some interesting facts. I hope someday there will be types of yoga named after good spirited yogi women :)
Thank you for all the informational videos you have up! I have chronic back pain and I’m having a bad flare up right now so I’m not able to do yoga at the moment. After being in this much pain, it’s inspired me to try yoga out to help manage my back pain. The only thing I can do right now is learn, so your channel has been SO helpful! Can’t wait until I feel better to start practicing Asana ☺️

Simple and clean explanation
These are all just terms. There are only 4 types of yoga. read from here -> ua-cam.com/video/GgytFAClNo4/v-deo.html
Ashtanga is great for beginners :-) Usually as a beginner you'll only learn the sun salutations and maybe a few standing poses in the first class. You'll gradually get more poses and each of them is being adapted to your body and its capabilities. It's pretty common that it takes around a year minimum to learn all the poses of the Primary Series. Led classes where the students are talked through the complete Primary Series are rather suitable for practitioners who have a lot of experience with Ashtanga already. Traditionally we practice in so called "Mysore Style", where everybody practices in his own tempo and to his own extent. That's what makes this style so suitable for people of all "levels".
Thank you very much Emily. That was extremely informative.
I'm glad you exposed bikram for what he is. Blows my mind that most people don't know.
It is quite shocking that he still has followers and supporters around the world so I thought it was important to mention him briefly in this video. Thanks for your comment :)

Sri Krisnamacharya was teacher of ashatangas Pattabhi Jois and Iyengars BVK Iyengar. Both were his student at young age and took with them shrishti krama and shakti krama of classical yoga taught by Sri Krisnamacharya. Shrishti krama is for formative young years and shakti is to build strength. They gave own names and exported to America. These schools r based on 2 of the many kramas taught by Krisnamacharya based on individual age and stage and need. Classically all movements r done along breath and minimum stay of 6 breaths as one gets readied towards it. Breath is prepared overtime as per rules of breath flow in accordance with yogasutras...dirgha and sukshama...thats is long and subtle with appropriate pause or hold or bandha. Krisnamacharya tradition recognizes uniqueness of each person, each body and each mind. What it brings to the table is totality of the various branches talked abt here. Bikram doesnt deserve name along with yoga. Sri Krisnamacharya refused to leave India or commercialise yoga. His teachings & mind science of yoga r learned by teachers getting trained by Yogavahini Chennai,Hyderabad. To see and treat yoga just as physical activity is disservice to the depth of understanding and healing it carries for human suffering. To look and understand and teach a student the totality as per him or her, takes an extraordinary training
If I may say, yoga being the union of mind-body-soul. As far I understand the five branches of yoga are Dhyan, Raja, Bhakti, Ha-tha, and Karma yoga. Ha-tha is the umbrella under which Mr. Astanga, Mr. Iyengar Mr. Vinyasa Sri Shivanada, Paramahansa taught their own personal style. It's a 10,000-year-old tradition that until the 60s remained in India and other parts of the East. And was always taught, one yogi, one student, There are thousands of possible asanas because it all depends on each student and where their body is at. After the sixties we now have our western approach...I love ha-tha yoga..I also need to remember; bhakti yoga - devotion, Dhyan yoga - meditation, karma yoga- I have so much work to do on myself and Raja yoga, well I won't be doing that . n..not in this life time anyway
Thank you for sharing - yes those are the different branches of yoga and I definitely plan to talk more about them on this channel, especially bhakti and karma yoga :) It really is a lifelong journey isn't it?
Very well explained!
Thank you :)

Hi ,I hope you are doing well. There are only two types of yoga Ashtanga yoga and Hatha yoga. Moreover everyone is teaching different styles of asana classes. Its a misconception of saying Hatha yoga, vinyasa yoga. Everyone should learn to differntiate the styles of asana. I would suggest everyone shoud say Hatha yogaasana session, Vinyasa yogasana session, Ashtanga vinyasa yogasana session, Iyengar yogasana session. There is only different styles of asana classes. not many yoga.
That was very helpful! Thanks a lot 🧘♀️💕🙌
Ashtanga is really challenging
Thank you Emily. What about Isha Yoga?
Thankyouu❤️❤️❤️
Thank you could you explain Kundalini yoga and restorative yoga? 😊
Hatha first for foundation .. then move on to vinyasa next or ashtanga
Thank you :)
You're welcome!
Hi Emily, what about kundalini yoga?
Hi! All of this is really interesting, specially all the Off the mat content, I was wondering, is there some book you'd recommend, where I can read all of this info a bit more in-depth? Thanks!
Hi Alex, I'm glad you've found my videos helpful :) I made a video recently recommending some books to read and learn more. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/JkDkRyloXYg/v-deo.html
What can you say on kumbhaka ?
Thanks,
FYI in Australia, every Hot yoga studio I’ve been to does the same 26+2 as bikram.
thank you! how about kundalini? is it more of a breath practice or is there also movement/poses? i appreciate it :)
These are all just terms. There are only 4 types of yoga. read from here -> ua-cam.com/video/GgytFAClNo4/v-deo.html
Thanks for your question - Kundalini yoga is an amazing practice which uses movement, breathwork, chanting etc. The focus is on awakening a certain type of energy known as 'kundalini'. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try :)
M Your big fan from India
I only follow and listen u
Thanks for watching :)
Actually I am very much interested to do yoga but I don't know where to start? & what type of yoga like Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Bikram, Hot Yoga and Yin to start as I am a beginner?
Can we get different examples of each one to understand
I have come across hatha flow, flow, gentle flow... After watching this video, i think all of these could refer to vinyasa flow.
Yes absolutely, anything with 'flow' in the name is generally referring to a vinyasa-style class :)
What is power yoga
amazing video ❤️ thank you so much
This channel is so underrated with so many good, useful and objective information! Thanks for sharing Emily :) Also if you have time, wondering what's your thoughts on Anusara Yoga, and would it be a good mix to learn both Anusara and Ashtanga at the same time? Thanks heaps
Thank you, I'm glad you've found my channel helpful and informative 😁 I haven't tried Anusara yoga myself so I would be able to say to be honest, but there's no harm in learning both at the same time. You may find after a while that you gravitate toward one more than the other. I always recommend trying as many types of yoga as you can!
@@EmilyRowellYoga Thanks Emily! All the best to your channel :) and look forward to more videos coming!
Just think of
Njyana
Karma
Bakthi and
Kriya yoga
Ashtanga yoga is totally different as per your information
Just getting into yoga I'm sure there are top apps for all these
From where u learn yoga.
thanks for the informative video!
How many days a week can someone do Ashtanga primary series If Im lifting weights intensly 1 or 2 days a week. Thanks
Hi, it's really difficult to say as every body is unique. I would say start with 1 or 2 days a week and see how you feel. If you're also lifting weights it's important to give your body adequate time to rest and recover too so a gentler style of yoga on rest days might be a good idea :) Take your time and see what feels best in your body.
How about ‘Gentle’ Yoga or ‘Ananda’ Yoga? I attended a gentle yoga class and I fell in love. Is this technically restorative yoga?
Great question - 'restorative yoga' usually refers to a completely passive practice. So you would use cushions and blankets to support you in different postures and just rest there with zero effort. The focus then is on resting, healing, restoring. Whereas 'Gentle yoga' usually still has some movement, strengthening, balancing etc so it is still a more active practice even if it is very gentle and slow.
Hope that makes sense!
🙏
Ashtanga simply means~ the eight limbs~ and ironically, there is NO MENTION of any asana in Patanjali's(the founder of the system) Presentation of the Yogic Journey.
Asana,is the third limb in the order, while the ultimate goal is being free of the attachments of various kinds and denominations on the way~
Asana,in ashtanga Yoga is simply defined as Sthir sukham asanam..
Meaning~ Being in a comfortable posture(inner and outer) is asana~
So As a form of Yoga asana practice, other forms CAN be talked about as a Physical component used, but not ashtanga,as it would be an incomplete explanation, leaving the remaining Vital limbs out of the Whole picture.
