I went home to Birmingham last weekend to attend Alabama’s last home game. On the way to the family home we passed by Elmwood cemetery where Bear Bryant was buried. My niece and I were telling our daughters the notable people buried there like our church Bishop, Eddie Kendrick of the Temptations and Bear Bryant. I remember watching the funeral procession from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham on the television and I waited a week later after the visitors died down to visit his grave.

I was 14 and cried like my grandpa died. People can say what they want, but the Bear was the greatest college football coach ever.

I remember this day.. sad day for us in alabama the bear was one of a kind. In my opinion the greatest to ever coach the game..

There were some hard times after Bear Bryant died. But we are fortunate to have bounced back and are in the second golden age of Bama football with Nick Saban. 14 consecutive seasons (and counting) of 10 or more wins, 6 national championships, 8 SEC championships, 4 Heisman Trophy winners, 7 playoff appearances, 44 consensus All Americans, and the first team in history to win 10 SEC games in one season.

RIP Denise...my sister who took me to my first Alabama game to witness him lean on that goalpost. I'm fortunate to have experienced the Bryant & Saban eras in my lifetime. GOOD TIMES GREAT MEMORIES.

Even as a ten year old kid from Long Island, New York, I remember the shock I felt when I heard that Bear Bryant had died. It was because he seemed like he was immortal.

Only 69 and just a few weeks after coaching his last game. He was in poor health but perhaps he couldn’t go on without being a football coach.

Not just according to your dad..... according to everyone. Former players, media, fans, and history testify that Paul "Bear" Bryant was one of the best to ever do it. Honestly, in my opinion, he's only surpassed by one. That's the GOAT. Nick Saban

Coach died on my 22nd bday. Watched NBC News Overnight show that night and fought back tears during their coverage of his passing at a friend's apartment while at college. Bryant was a blessing to me and other ppl in Alabama, and an unforgettable character.

I was just a kid but I thank God I was alive when The Bear was our coach. I love Nick Saban but it WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER BEAR.

    • @KevinShoemaker-oj1pi

You're right, they'll never be another Bear. They'll never be another like The GOAT, Nick Saban either. Regardless of how you see em shaking out, I'm glad The University of Alabama had both of them. Our winning tradition has been cemented in the history of college football as The Standard, time and time again. Every season more players immortalize themselves in that great tradition. There might be some schools that have done it longer but one thing is for certain.....ain't nobody done it better! Roll Tide

Died a year short of a decade before I was born. I’ve still watched all of Bama’s best games under Bryant thanks to BamaRewind. I still wonder if they rlly rolled Toomer’s corner when the news broke… They definitely when Saban announced his retirement, thinking it was all over for Bama. And to an extent they’re right, but they still won’t be rollin’ any trees after the Iron Bowl any time soon. We’re still a top3 program in terms of talent, not New Mexico St. or Maryland with a 2nd team QB… As Verne Lindquist once said…”This…Aint…Kentucky.” Rtr!

I remember being on the interstate with my dad and everyone was pulled to the shoulder with their lights on. It's one of my earliest memories. I wish I knew what I did with the Birmingham News paper that had Reagan's State of the Union address about Bear.

@@hermanator74301I'm pretty sure it was a typo. A little common sense goes a long way tho. It doesn't take much effort to deduce that he probably meant "remember"

I would be willing to bet everything I own that they won’t line the streets or interstate when Saban passes on. Been a fan all my long life. No other coach will ever be able to touch the Bear.

Depends on the site of his burial...assuming he wants to be buried. I would assume he'd lie in repose at the stadium for everyone to pay their last respects.
