There is a great quote he had...once you’ve done it they can never take that from you. He is right. I spent the first few years as an Engineer thinking it could be taken in some way. But it isn’t true.
Thanks Marty, I remember you, you were a great player for Bama and the New York Jets, us fans are proud of you, and you know the BEAR would be, you are a winner in the game of Life and football.
Congratulations Marty you are an inspiration to all who want to accomplish "their dreams". Alabama was fortunate to have such human being in Coach Paul Bryant, we all who love and played the game of football !!!
Marty was truly one of the best , consistant defensive tackles in NFL history.- -- the man played every single down as if it was his last- -- just like his teammates Klecko, Sallam and Gastineau and lets not forget Baldwin and Bennett- -what a shame the offense wasn't on the same level as the defense. .....
Great video to see that Mr. Lyons came back to school so he can keep his promise to a coach who was a father figure to many men. Awesome job Mr. Lyons and great inspiration Coach Bryant.
Today an athlete can finish in 3 to 3 in a half years. They have to have hours counting towards a degree. You can't get behind if you do, you can't play. He contributed to why there is stereotypes about football players.
Does anyone recall the game where Marty got so worked up against Jim Kelly & the Buffalo Bills , he had Jim on the ground by his neck & was roughing him up when the referee came running over to break it up and on his microphone he said 10 yard penalty FOR GIVING HIM THE BUSINESS ! !--- LOL. LOL
I remember it like it was yesterday ! It was so unbelievably funny that those words came out over the loudspeaker ! Marty had many good laugh about that one throughout the years........
I was there at Giant Stadium that day when that happened. Kelly, had recently joined the Bills, after the USFL folded. The Bills were not there yet as a team, but Kelly was making an impact quickly as a player. Marty was throwing punches on the bottom of the pile. Classic referee moment. The referee was one of the leagues top guys. Ben ... somebody. Jets won that day.
Wow I don’t know if this is one of those “Mandela Effects” but I could swear it was Gastineau who that call was on but it’s been 35 years haha, I’m sure my memory is off
Good for Marty Lyons -- CONGRATULATIONS, I'm happy for him, and I respect him !!! TOO MANY players of his era (and actually from the 1950s when "football mills" started until recent years when some players started VOLUNTARILY leaving college WITHOUT using up their NCAA eligibility because the courts and NFL now allowed players to enter the Draft early) simply "played ball" and did NOT earn their degrees/graduate. All they did in those years was USE UP THEIR ELIGIBILITY to play COLLEGE sports ... and so they moved on from school because they wanted to play pro ball and were good enough, OR because the college/university no longer "needed" them because their eligibility had been used up and the player could no longer "benefit" them. Given the above, IMO, it's a disgrace that SO MANY so-called institutions of higher education failed their student athletes that way in yesteryear (and sometimes even today -- I'm not talking about players who leave early of their own volition). Yes, it's absolutely incumbent upon a student-athlete to do HIS/her part and attend class regularly, do all assignments, etc. (instead of simply attending practice, playing sports, and then partying away like there's no tomorrow). BUT it's ALSO incumbent upon the coaches and universities to ENSURE that the players are NOT just doing sports and partying, that they ARE attending classes and keeping up with their academic obligations, AND that they get the players some study/tutorial help if needed to stay on track academically (and NO, I do NOT mean tutors that cheat by "doing" the work for the student-athlete).
69 and looked 109. Back then, players played football and didn't have to keep their grades up. Today it's the reason why, people have stereotypes. A few athletes didn't take classes seriously. (He graduated with Jonathan Allen.)
What does this have to do with a true man holding up his end of the bargain to his coach over 40 years later? Marty has been very successful in the business world outside of football. Just sayin!
I'm going back to college at 46 for my bachelors, I'm a JETS fan and this is a big inspiration
Good for you, I work at a college, its never to old to go back, good luck to you!!
Pulling for ya man
That is great Demo! Congratulations to you. It is so true that NOBODY can take that degree away from you.

Joe Namath did this same thing in 2007 at Alabama. I was there at the time
Marty Lyons is much more than a powerful run stopping defensive tackle, he was part of the 1981 New York Sack Exchange unit!!
Congratulations Marty you are an inspiration to all who want to accomplish "their dreams". Alabama was fortunate to have such human being in Coach Paul Bryant, we all who love and played the game of football !!!
Excellent story.....God Blessings to you and your family Marty.....and to Coach Bear, tip of the cap sir.

New York Sack Exchange!!! Great time that was in NYC!!
Most don't know about Tom Baldwin or Barry Bennett...... They were a force to be reckoned with whenever Joe or Mark or Abdul couldn't go..
Not only does it show who Marty Lyons is but more importantly it shows who coach Bryant was.
What an inspiration...congratulations Marty!

Great video...great player...and a great person
Love that story. The Bear is in heaven clapping and saying that’s my boy.
Great story! I wish that MORE scholarship athletes would return and earn their college degrees!

I was 7 years old in 69 Broadway Joe that's all I have to say!!!
@@normanalvarez5751 Bear got his first houndstooth-type hat from Jets coach Weeb Eubank.
Marty has a lot or integrity. Great story
Marty Lyons, Abdul Salaam, Joe Klecko, Mark Gastineau...1980's NY Sack Exchange!
Watching the Jets playing defense was more fun than watching the offense scoring TD’s!
4:45 tells you everything you need to know about how his players felt about him! Awesome.
Marty Lyons is one of my family members he is one of my uncles brothers and my uncle Philip Lyons funeral was today
So sorry my friend...

ICYDK; Marty Lyons won the NFL’s “Man of the Year” Award - now called the Walter Payton Award.
Life is harder than the Bears two a day practices.
I've not heard any negative comments about Bear Bryant from former players.
Crimson Tide 🏈
What is the quality of a degree from Alabama?
Are there other degrees out there?
I suspect very much what you make of it.
Dislikes are Auburn and Giants fans
Roll Tide, Marty!
Must be at least 8 Auburn fans out there. 😂
👍
Who's cutting onions?
Elon musk says university is a waste of money

what did he get his degree in....
Good question
