It's rare that I see videos where people have their initial hypothesis disproven, and they just accept it like that. Kudos to Kyle for showing off that an incorrect hypothesis does not mean uninteresting results
He is normally more excited when his expectations doesn't match reality.
Then you aren't watching the videos of people that actually value science. They are abundant.
Being able to admit you were wrong and not just accept it, but be excited to learn something, is a critical skill that we all would benefit from practising.
which is why the scientific method is so effective. thinking in terms of proving yourself only brings on confirmation bias, but thinking in terms of disproving yourself (hence a hypothesis) allows you to be so much more objective
A Hypothesis is just a guess based on known information. Kyle is a man that values science and just wants to create a good experiment with valid results. Weather his initial Hypothesis was way off or dead on, isn't important to him. Only discovering the true nature of the subject of his experiment is important.
This is some quality sciencing, Kyle formed the hypothesis that Thor's hammer would make a bad throwing weapon, tested that hypothesis, determined he was wrong, and then published the results.

He didn't write it down though. And as any fan of Adam Savage knows, that's the difference between science and screwing around. But, there is video evidence, so Kyle is probably still ok.
Not sure why after all that he didn't go into the physics to explain why. Despite the mass difference between the head and the shaft, the length of the shaft still matters significantly in offsetting the center of mass.
How do we know he isn't Thor? Sure looks like him!
Something that we absolutely need to make sure the next generation of scientists is comfortable with. A negative result is still a good result and can be used to better understand the world.

No joke. 3kg may not sound like much, but for a weapon that is heavy. For a thrown weapon that is excessively heavy.
Experience and talent: the ultimate combination. I don't know how long it took her to master the hammer, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the three attempts we saw and that was all she needed.

Yeah, very impressive of her. But may I ask why ... Kyle and all of you ignore the hundred year old practice of hammer-throwing in the Olympic Games? Is this ignorance or another American thing?:P
Backstory: The men's throw hammer weighs 7.26 kilograms (16 English pounds, thats more than double as the replica in the video!!!), four kilograms for women. It therefore has the same weight as the bump ball in the shot put.
The hammer throw as a modern sport was built in Scotland and Ireland in the 19th century, where you originally threw a weight with a wooden handle.
The program of the Olympic Games has been a hammer throw for men since 1900. For women, it has been taking place at international competitions since 1997 and at the Olympic Games since 2000.

- First I am not American.
- Second doing something that Olympic athletes do 100 times better than someone doesn't mean that the regular person cannot be impressive, Because Olympics level is (as it should be logically) unreachable by regular people
- Third she is experienced in weapons throwing but the Hammer is so odd in it's balance (as Kyle explained in the video). Her being able to throw it with the correct rotation for the metal part to hit the target, I found that to be impressive.
It's not the weight, I chucked a 4kg (or 6 can't remember) metal balls when I was 16 for 10 to 11 meters so it's not the weight that's impressive, its the odd balance of the hammer

The fact she could almost immediately know exactly how to throw it so it rotated correctly and hit the watermelon/board perfectly is a testament to her skills. Damn.
She paid attention to the ark on the first throw. When guessing, you want to take out as much variables out as possible. That's how golfers perfect their swings.

I had a female friend who was an edged weapon specialist. She and her beau had the semi-common weapon displays you might see in some folks' homes, but they were all bracket hung (not screwed/clamped to mount) and had functional edges.

In the myths, Mjollnir had a handle that was way too short because Loki (in his guise as a bug) kept stinging the dwarf who forged it. The fact that its center of mass is on the head is likely unintentional. Also, the bug at the end of the video was likely Loki as well.
Mjölnir in general was fairly small.

We don't actually know how big Mjolnir was. We can make plenty of assumptions based on archaeological hammers from the Norse people, but that's about it. In the Eddas, it is mentioned that Thor's hammer is small enough to be hidden/concealed in his shirt, so maybe that gives us a bit of an idea. Jackson Crawford (Norse specialist/professor) says the hammer could shrink to be used as a pendant, so Thor could hide among humans. There's no real evidence of this in the Eddas, other than the one aforementioned reference I provided. So, Crawford's assumption that Mjolnir could shrink, I mean, you can't say whether he's right or wrong. Maybe Mjolnir was just the size of a normal hammer from the Norse age, which can easily be imagined to hide underneath a tunic or something. I'm personally not convinced Mjolnir could shrink, though. It stayed the same size the whole time in my mind.

@@geckokid8265 Neil Gaiman's book isn't an original source. Again, just an interpretation of what we do have. Neil Gaiman himself disclaims that the book is intended to be for storytelling, and not a reference for information. All we have for true referencing of knowledge about Norse myth and culture are the Prose and Poetic Eddas, the sagas, jewelry, amulets, and runestones found in Scandinavia. The Norse people didn't write stuff down very much, so there are some interpolations that can sometimes be made, but again, without evidence, knowledge can sometimes be limited. For example, Thor is never actually attributed to being a 'Thunder God'. All that is ever said is in the Poetic Edda, where Mjolnir is said to make the sound of thunder when it strikes, and another instance where the mountains are said to tremble as Thor goes to silence Loki. There is essentially zero mention of Thunder or Lightning being attributed to Thor in the original sources. And there's NO mention of either within the Prose Edda.
I might add, Thor might actually have been a 'Thunder God' after all, just not necessarily stated in the Eddas. There exist some roundabout connections to Thor and Thunder, as some secondary accounts, like from Saxo Grammaticus in Denmark, or some other accounts. It's a really interesting rabbit hole to go down. Thor is a Thunder God, but the association isn't really talked about in our closest sources.
In knife throwing there are basically two types of throws: rotational throws and no-spin throws. A no-spin throw is essentially where you swing your arm in a circle to accelerate it and release when your arm is facing the target. I think a similar throw may be possible with hammers - yielding a straight throw similar to Thor’s.
Maybe, but the no-spin throw would place all strain on your arm, especially your shoulder. It is fine with knives, which do not have much weight to them, but for a heavy hammer, that is a problem. A smaller lightweight hammer like a typical ball-peen might be okay, but forget about using the throw with anything like Mjolnir.
Obviously, if you have the resilience of an Asgardian, you will probably be fine, but if you are any other mortal, you ain't getting that throw any more often than once (twice if you have plot armor). Then again, given how Mjolnir is able to respond to its wielder's thoughts and will and fly accordingly, that might render the whole thing a non-issue.
I think it's a combination of god endurance, Mjolnir's level of sentience, and its ability to alter it's mass.
Mjolnir Is probably constantly adjusting itself to do what Thor intends. So as it's being thrown it's probably adjusting to give enough heft needed for haptic feedback pre-release, conserve energy as it's flying, and then get as fast and as heavy as it wants as it nears its target.
Theoretically Mjolnir could be thrown at a fly on a wall and not damage the wall beyond adding some fly guts to it. Since Mew-Mew can propel itself and steer, its wielder shouldn't even have to aim especially well for targets at range.
There's gotta be upper and lower bounds to all that. Otherwise Thor could just toss Mjolnir up in the air, it could then beeline for Thanos' coconut and hit with enough force to turn it to vapor.
All of this is apparently tied up in its relationship with the wielder, which explains why Thor loves it so. Imagine having a tool that always did what you wanted.
No spin throws tend to be less stable and therefore less used at range, but you can surprise the hell out of someone within ten feet or so.

I was a bit surprised (and slightly disappointed, though I can understand it) that they didn't test at all trying to throw it from the strap. Thor is seen snipping it around with the strap and releasing it pretty often, and I was curious what the result of that might be. Or even if they didn't test it for safety, would have been interesting for Kyle to have discussed the physics of it.
For how wonky the physics around Thor's hammer is, they're less ridiculous than Ant Man physics. Giant Ant Man would just blow away in the breeze if he was the same mass; tiny Ant Man would fall pretty deep into the lawn with each jump, etc etc.
Agreed. Sometimes, he hits with full mass (like during an attack), and others his mass reflects his size (like when he gets tangled in a woman's hair on the bus). So it's not right or wrong -- it's inconsistently both.
My headcanon is that the suit's technology regulates the Pym particles and allows for certain aspects of it to be manipulated in certain ways, which is why Giant-Man doesn't just blow around in the breeze or Ant-Man doesn't shatter upon transferring a grown man's mass and weight into an ant-sized point
Yeah that pissed me off no consistency in ant man at all. Like a 200lb+ man running up someone's arm not noticed then punches them across a room. Or being flicked across a room being 200lb+ with no damage to the flickers finger. As much as the whole mcu is unbelievable that shit just straight out annoyed me.
It's very clear Pym either didn't understand or straight up lied about how the Pym particles worked. He carried around the tank on his keychain, definitely not a conservation of mass

The subject you should be debating is how what looks to be 2.8L of a neutron star doesn't turn everything within 1 AU of it's surface into a fine sheen.
She made a great point that Thor has enough strength to just do what he wants plus he's got a thousand years or so using it so his proficiency would be insane

Yes, a 5kg throwing weapon is nothing to someone with superhuman strength. I'd love to see how she would throw a Mjolnr weighted for normal humans.
I'm not so sure Thor 'throws' the hammer as much as giving momentum and direction and the hammer propels itself. We know the hammer can fly by itself, so some element of magic is definitely involved in its flight paths.
You say magic, I say "sufficiently advanced technology, indistinguishable from magic".
There is two factors actually:
Thor's super strength is over 100+tons of strength. Top it off the Hammers magic is just not only an incantation effects of magic ; but the Hammer is itself has a bound celestial Dragon spirit infused into the very Hammer itself and which that animated living Dragon supernatural spirit embedded into the hammer has abilities itself that channels into the hammer like . odin's spear does the same way.
@@josephbearpaw Later on in the comics, it gets even more entertaining. In the "Smashtronaught" series w/The Hulk, Odin's spirit is the one in the hammer. It's hilarious. :)

The funny thing is, in the original Mythos of Thor and Loki, Loki sabotaged the hammer to make it shorter, making it intentionally worse for fighting.

This is basically "if you're super strong this is an excellent weapon, and if the weapon itself is magical then it's even better" which fits, since this is for a god.
I doubt a human would find this more effective than a lighter weapon, but it's not *for* humans.
I mean, if you've seen all the newer stuff that's come out, it's obvious they aren't really gods, and they even have to rely on a race of dwarves to design and create the hammer. How can Asgardians be God's if they have to get their godly power from other people? And then what about Captain America that proved that he can wield the hammer and produce that same lightning affects as Thor?
@@ryanthompson3737 Not all Asgardians are gods, but some are. What do you call a nigh impotent being from another dimension that can control aspects of reality with their mind? As for the lightning powers for Captain America... ehhhhh not exactly. The hammer helps control and direct electric energy. He was fighting alongside Thor. Captain America wasn't generating the power and it wasn't coming from the hammer. As I recall the only time Captain America used lightning at all was when Thor was directing it into the hammer, never himself.
It's also established Thor doesn't need the hammer for his powers at all. They are, in fact, restrained by the hammer. It is a weapon created to direct his power, but it can't control it fully and so his full power doesn't manifest when he's using it. This is why Thor can summon lightning storms from the sky unarmed but doesn't seem capable anymore when he has it.
I'd also say the mutants are, at the very least, demigods.

@@chrismanuel9768 The hammer itself actually possesses an elder God that was trapped inside and bounded by an enchantment. Whether or not Thor was being inhibited by the hammer has all to do with the "god" inside with higher powers. In fact, Thor would be among the lower teir of "gods" considering there's SEVERAL God tiers above him, elder gods being more godly than him. He's closer to being a mortal human than an ACTUAL God when you look at the hierarchy charts.

Funny thing about Kyle's estimation of the Weapon early in the vid... It's not too far off from the mythology of that Weapon... Mjolnir is Explicitly Meant to be a FLAWED weapon, after Loki Messed with the Smiths while they were making it,it came out with Too short a Handle which made it unusable as a weapon to anyone that wasn't Thor (Only one hand could fit on it's Handle, so the wielder had to be able to lift and use it with only one hand). Partially because he's physically the Strongest of the Gods, Partially because he's Naturally Resistant to Fire as Mjolnir Radiates heat that would Kill most beings that tried to Hold it, But even with those traits Thor Still Needed the Belt "Megingjörð" to double his already Great Strength, and the Gauntlet "Járngreipr" To insulate his Hand against the heat of the Hammer to be able to use it adequately. This Whole Setup is where Marvel got the Idea of "Being Worthy" from, in the original Myth it's not a question of Morality, but it's just that he's the only one strong enough to lift it with one hand and who can take the heat of it without Melting.
Maybe the handle on the "real Mjolnir" is made in a material much denser than the head to balance the weight distribution and move the centre of gravity closer to it.
Or maybe it's just magical.

Honestly, you're throwing a rock, with a handle attached to give you more launch speed. Same principle as the ancient sling or the jai-alai scoop.
The old Native American tomahawk was seldom thrown in battle, but when it was, the aim wasn't to stick the edge. That was a lucky bonus, with the intended purpose being to hit the enemy with a flying rock when he was too far away for hacking.
So it should come as no surprise that it works pretty well if you can hit the target -- the idea has a couple hundred millenia of experimental support behind it.
By throw three she has utterly mastered it. I'm ludicrously impressed!!

Sheer practice. Axe throwing isn't actually that difficult and most people can stick it on their third or 4th throw
For such a weirdly weighted throwing weapon she got the rotation spot on even on the first throw. Though I suspect that the shape of the throw rather than the object determines the rotations per distance but still impressive to nail it right away with such an unfamiliar weapon.

Can be. But not always. For example, a blackhole the mass of the earth flying through you... well, it will probably do some damage, but is exponentially less lethal than one would expect from something the mass of a planet.

I feel like this should’ve been thrown closer to how some knives and darts are thrown. Not a rotational based action but more in line with maintaining its forward momentum.
Thor is throwing the hammer forward, never in any type of arc. If the throwing force was enough in any given direction and you used the last moments of the handle leaving your finger tips you could quickly counteract the rotational force and leave just the forward momentum of the hammer in a straight path.
Honestly I’d love to see this hammer shot out of some type of cannon into a ballistics dummy to show what type of devastation would befall some poor henchman who just got blasted my Mew-Mew.

I highly doubt a standard throw from the hip is going to get any further than 2-3 feet before gravity has its way. Shot out of a canon? it will act as any other projectile does and obliterate anything it lands in, handle probably being destroyed before it leaves the canon... now a railgun of sufficient power.... ouch...
Lets just remember that Mjolnir doesn't obey the laws of physics as we know them. Its magic powered and just throwing the thing forward and expecting it to hit something requires that magic. Heaving it over your head, yeah that's deadly but as a fighting weapon in actual combat... without the magic, it'll get you killed pretty quick as it will tire you out and leave you open to the second or third attacker. That's why its so impressive in the movies, just to lift the thing is a feat for most people, worthy or not. Using it as a weapon... entirely different beast.
So Very nice trophy piece really but not at all practical.
I assume there's a weight/safety issue there for the most part. The hammer is VERY heavy so torque and leverage can cause a lot of muscle issues if you're not careful. Might have to get a discus thrower involved haha
I would also like to see someone make a version with a _much_ denser handle.
I mean, just making it out of steel would be a start, but I feel that tungsten would be a better choice. From a pure density point of view, gold, platinum, plutonium, or uranium would also do, but, I think tungsten would be the most practical of the lot.
So, Kyle, you're going to go over some Thor points with regard to Thor's weaponry, I look forward to this.

Total nerd that's a Norwegian at heart and knows a thing or two about the Norse people and Norse myth here- (I'm only serious)
You'll be MUCH more satisfied with Norse accurate Thor/Mjolnir. Mjolnir in Norse Mythology is... basically just really heavy. It still returns to Thor, which might bring up some issues, but overall, it is able to follow the laws of physics.

@@mitochondria794 Well, that's the thing. It never says anywhere else that he needs the two to hold Mjolnir. In fact, the Jotnar seem to steal it from him without needing to wear either, and what about Thor's two sons at Ragnarøk? Modi and Magni collectively carry Mjolnir from their father's dead body after submitting to Jörmungandr's venom. So, I mean, with the myths being only passed down orally, and the only bulk accounts of the myths coming from AFTER the Viking age, there's definitely some inconsistencies here and there.
@@ENCELADUSCompositions myths are almost never a coherent canon, they vary by place and time and although we like to package them up into a single story but is quite possible that even when people worshipped Thor there were inconsistencies in the stories.

in theory the underhand throw kyle shows would be one of the most effective ways to throw the hammer as it imparts barely any angular momentum on the hammer making it a "no spin throw".
that means that the hitty ouchy side would ALWAYS point towards the enemy.
though to be honest, having the handle of a near indestructible hammer driven into you like a blunt nail doesnt sound all that pleasant either....

When she threw it with the camera behind, it seemed alright, like it did a little bit of damage but with the shot of the hammer from the side at the board, I could see and hear the massive impact of it against the board and I'm like "that might mess me up more than a knife" 😳

I don't think any person can generate enough force to lift themselves off the ground. They'd either need to use enough energy to replicate a nuke exploding or they'd need to be a hollow boned bird person. Or both. And they'd start at the highest moment of inertia and rapidly lose speed without anything to accelerate them once in air. Birds flap their wings to generate lift. Thor with his hammer? It's like a long jump. He doesn't generate any further lift once in air. It would also have to have the same parabolic arc as the momentum is overcome by gravity, like in this video.
So I mean yes, it's possible, kinda, but in a very limited way

its not nearly as good as a normal warhammer
Way heavier, so you'll tire quicker, the leverage is a lot weirder when using it for melee hits
For throwing, it will have much lower range, since she had to aim higher than normal, so it'll hit the ground sooner than a normal axe.
And is a lot harder to throw, since she could dual wield the axes, but took both hands and a buildup to throw the hammer

You want the end of the hammer small, so it hits a smaller surface area to do more damage
The bigger the area it hits with, the less damage it will do
Armour is designed specifically to increase the surface area the force of a hit is dispersed over, so rather than a sword slashing across on a sharp point, its dispersed across your entire torso via the armour
Something hitting with the same force over an area the size of your fist, verses hitting with something the size of a coin. The latter will be a lot more dangerous cuz it will actually go in, rather than just smacking your in the chest

Has anyone tried mapping that parabolic arc onto footage from the movies to see if the hero prop is actually weighted correctly with the center of mass basically in the middle of the head based on how it flies? It'd be interesting if that analysis shows that the prop being used has a hollow head or something to make it easier to heave around

@@davebennett5069 I'm sure that's true of most shots, but I know they use practical props sometimes, especially when it's being summoned to Chris' hand. It'd also be fascinating to analyze the CGI to see if they're animating the center of mass in the correct spot
@@MarcosProjects They do use practical props however for mjolnir in particular they have a whole bunch of props with different weights (meaning different centers of mass) so if they are ever throwing an actual prop they would likely use one of the lighter ones so as not to hurt the actors

This was so fun I was actually really sad it was over. It was really impressive how Tasty mastered the hammer throw and I was SUPER impressed that not a single throw went handle first. I know she's a pro at that but to throw something entirely new and so uniquely weighted and hit the right area first try was...well honestly it was breathtaking.

Humans are extremely good at throwing things when compared to other animals. I haven't looked into it, but I suspect that there is a human instinct to be able to approximate the center of mass of a held object. Most projectiles require substantial dexterity in order to be effective, due to precise technique and minor adjustments made when aiming. The overall effectiveness of the hammer is really surprising, though. The hammer pretty much just works if you can hit the target, meaning dexterity and skill are far less important than raw strength. Giving an unusually strong individual a thrown weapon like this is extremely practical.

A hypothesis on why hominids got so intelligent so quickly and why humans out lasted Neanderthals was because of our physical traits.
The hypothesis says that when hunting humans and other non neanderthals hominids would stalk a pray nearly 100 ft away. The hunting party would throw a few spears at it. It didn't matter if the target was hit or not as long as it got a chase to happen. Humans would then literally run the animal to exhaustion before going for the kill.
To do this an animal has to be the best thrower, and marathon running level of endurance. Which humans have in spades.
To perfect it caused us to need to intelligence not seen in any other animal on the planet.
Much safer form of hunting then Neanderthals which would do basically bullfighting when hunting, which is good for long term species survival, especially in the Ice Age.

It was nice to actually see someone "talking to" a weapon before tossing it...most folks would simply pick something up and assume it'll function like anything else they normally used would. each object has its own weight and balance properties and, as such, will perform in specific ways when used...a sword will perform differently to a war hammer, which will in turn act differently to a mace, which again will act differently to an axe, etc. By handling said object for a while (which will vary depending on the user's familiarity, expertise, and intended use) before trying to swing or throw them, you'll get a feel for how the weapon "wants" you to use it...that is, how it relates to its length, center of gravity, and how it will perform in relation to forces acting on it in relation to the person using it and their style...I've held weapons that "want" to pull a user's hand a certain way when swung and others that feel as though you can let go for a moment, scratch your nose, and it'd float there until you grab them again (so nicely balanced that their use feels effortless). Before lobbing the hammer and killing the stand the watermelon was on, Taesty Danger hefted it a few times without releasing it to see how the hammer "wanted" to be thrown...and still we say RIP to that poor stand.
Would have given anything for her to, on the first throw, hit the mellon square, exploding it then stopped, balanced, on the point of the tripod until it returned. Loved the demo!
We have come to the conclusion that if someone can get it right in 3 tries then Thor could definitely use it with 1500 years of training time I guess.

Mjolnir flys pretty accurately if you assume it can control gravity. The head "falls" straight "down" toward wherever Thor wants it to go
