In 2015 Amsterdam based composer Joep Beving composed and recorded his debut solo album “Solipsism” at home in the still of night. The album is filled with introspective and often filmic piano compositions. Beving’s sound could be described as the opposite to over-produced and complexly layered music styles. His ambition for “Solipsism” is to keep the music stripped back to its essence: simple sounds to express complex emotions. It represents a quest for essence and beauty, expressed in a neo-classical vocabulary.
“Solipsism” refers to the philosophical idea that reality only exists in one’s mind. Everything outside of it, the external world and the minds of others, cannot truly be known and hence does not exist. Beving’s music is an experiment in existential communication, a belief in an absolute aesthetic, to prove that a universal and metaphysical reality does exist.
The production and release of the album (digital & vinyl) is completely independent.

He seems like such a genuine, down-to-earth person. Someone cool to hang out with. I listen to a lot of composers, neo-classical and etc., but I don't think I would ever bother to sit down and watch a video like this about any of them except for Joep. What a cool, mellow dude.

This has truly inspired me. I started playing when I was 6 and came across your song sleeping lotus and felt a connection with it instantly. After learning it, I played it for my grandad, which he loved. My grandad passed away in late September of this year. He listened to recordings of me playing on the morning he passed away. Like you, this instantly changed the way I played, suddenly every inch of emotion in me went into any performance, weather I'm on my own or Infront of people. I played at his funeral which was a great honour of mine. All I can say is Thankyou. Your music has really inspired me and defiantly made an impact on mine, and my grandads life.

Thanks for this comment, it touches me also. I really need to see my grand parents 90s+ who are so respectful for music.

This really resonated with me, Sophie! Thank you for sharing your story. My grandfather first introduced me to playing the piano and my grandmother shared with me her deep love of classical music, they were both a huge influence on me, musically and also in their approach to living a full life. My grandfather passed away a few years ago, then my grandmother earlier this year. I had promised to go over and play for her every week as soon as the pandemic was over, but unfortunately she didn't make it until then. However, I did get the opportunity to compose a piece that was played at her funeral service. I will forever regret not playing for either of them in recent years, but I hope that in some way they know the influence they had on me and that all my music is dedicated to them both.

I listened to many modern composers, yet, everytime I would listen, I would feel hollow, empty and heavy at the same time. Beving's music is calm and somewhat wholesome to listen to.

Found your work a couple years back and ended up just sitting there listening, totally immersed which I found fascinating because it’s just you and a piano yet I felt more immersed than ever. I’ve been on a path of discovering what really moves me in life, and it’s becoming obvious to me that beauty plays a huge part in that. Beauty in the way you spoke about it in another video you did. I was feeling lost and went into a really deep search for something and in that search I remembered your music. I couldn’t remember your name but eventually I found it and since then you had released a couple more albums. Hearing you speak for the first time in the few English videos you have on UA-cam is so interesting because it goes along the lines of what I’m drawn to aswell in beauty, looking at the make of the self, people, our environment, life itself etc etc. I appreciate your work a lot and relate to you in some of the ways you think about things that you’ve talked about in videos. Not many people I’ve come across that just seem to be on the same wave length so Thankyou

I also like the concept of melancholy a lot...it enables to embrace things, slows me down so that I can focus, helps me to understand the depth of things, relaise why things matter...and totally agree, there is a point of hope in the end, based on the journey you have taken.

I would go to Amsterdam just to watch him in concert. Even if I don't get their language. I've recently travelled to England and the people that I liked the most were the Dutch.

Same, discovered pr Beving on spotify, one year later. Called a big music shop today for piano sheet. None. This music is wonderful. I hear divisions of Mr Joep in Ludovico Einodi, Erik Satie, Phillip Glass and bringing it all back to Chopin. Ok time to shut and open the hood of the piano. Youre inspiring me and wish to go on.
(3 hrs later): oh man the music is radically calming, im discovering back some braveheart and last of the mohikan in there. Agape to you.
Omg dont compare this music to craig armstrong piano, its like comparing arnold schwartzenneger to danny devito.
