11 things I loved and hated about my first Princess cruise

- I recently returned from my first-ever Princess cruise, a 7-night Alaska sailing on the Royal Princess. Princess Cruises is one of the most popular American cruise lines, and they are most well known for their Alaska itineraries, in which they are a market leader.
Before my Princess cruise, I had heard excellent things about the cruise line, from the dining choices to the Alaska-themed programming, so I was curious to discover all my ship had to offer.
Here are 11 things I loved and hated about my first Princess cruise.

The ships only cruise to Alaska during a few short months (during the summer). That's a short season...so maybe that's why they aren't designed for cold weather temps. The rest of the year, the ship is probably cruising the Caribbean or the Mediterranean or somewhere with more normal temperatures. I've been on different Princess ships and a couple had indoor pools and a couple did not. They are not all the same. Personally, I think Alaska is best observed standing outside and breathing the brisk, clean air.
I've not used the laundry facilities...but most people say they actually work for free. Instead of putting in tokens, you just have to push in the token holder on the washers and they will start. Also...you just need to turn on the dryers and they will start. That might save you most of your $7 next time.
Sorry you didn't have the kind of service you were expecting. I hope it's better if you cruise Princess again. I've always had wonderful service on my cruises.

❤just did a 10 day cruise with Ruby Princess , and LOVED IT. We used Ocean Now all over the ship over 10 times IT WORKED. loved ❤our cruise
OH PLEASE! We sailed to Alaska at the end of June and we used the pool three times. And as Arizonans, we're not fans of cold weather... but it was warm enough to use both the pools and the hot tubs. And even among people who are critical of princess, you just about never hear people complain about the level of service.
The service on my recent trip to Alaska was amazing! This review is not accurate.
We have taken a couple of Alaska cruises on Princess. We were never disappointed. The crew were friendly and helpful. We never had a problem finding a friendly crew member. One more thing… why would you want to use a pool in Alaska??. 😅

We've been on several Princess cruises and have another booked in December. We also had problems getting drinks delivered ordered using the Medallion. While frustrating, we had to remember that NO OTHER CRUISE LINE even attempts anything like this, and it worked more often than it failed. We also wish the Princess ships had a covered pool area like Royal has with its Solarium but can live without it. One thing we like that I don't think you mentioned was the reasonably priced specialty restaurants. They seem to be quite a bit cheaper than other lines we have been on.
We are booked on the Royal Princess June 2024 for 14 days in Alaska. Our first time on Princess and to Alaska. So many different conflicting opinions about most every cruise line. We simply chose Princess for as close as we could get to an all inclusive experience with the Premier Package. We haven't been on a perfect cruise yet but we have always enjoyed what we took. Hopefully the Royal Princess won't disappoint.

My husband & I haven’t cruised since 2019 & we’re on the count down to our cruise in December. I love cruises but if our neighborhood restaurants still work with a skeletal staff, & a limited menu, we don’t expect our cruise to be perfect.
How many jacuzzis do you think a ship should have? There are thousands of ppl on a cruise, so there’s no way they could have enough for everyone. Out of all of the cruises I’ve been on I’ve NEVER been in a Jacuzzi because of the crowds. So????
I recently found all of the cruise sites on you tube & I admit I thought they would be such fun, but there’s so much drama on these sites at times & I found you hating so many things irritating. On a cruise they cook your food, clean up the mess, clean your cabin, & provide entertainment. What can possibly be wrong with that. I feel very blessed to go on a cruise.
Nothing can go wrong unless you want to complain about everything lol. I love Princess Cruises. The only thing I did not like and still do not like is dinners in sit down restaurant style in the ballrooms. The food lacks seasoning and is like warm. Premium dining is excellent for extra charge. I opt in for buffet most nights, food is hot and so much to choose from. I always find something I can enjoy.
Well said!!! Her review is not accurate at all. I just got back a few days ago from crusing the Royal to Alaska for 14 days. Everything was perfect!
I had no problem with Ocean now. Came every time on time
Most of the time the food and drinks that I ordered through Ocean Now arrived rather fast but, sometimes the food and drinks took very long to arrived or never arrived at all.
I have done 2 cruises both with princess a 10 day and a 14 day. .The ocean now app is fantastic. The food is great and the services is phenomenal. I like the relaxed environment and the overall chill feeling on the ships

We've been on 32 cruises with Princess with 6 more booked in the next 18 months, most of your hates we don't even use. We need at lest a balcony cabin and for our last 15 or 20 cruises we've booked mini suites. Our service has always been excellent and we have given extra gratuities over and above the ships standard ones many times. We went on 1 cruise with Carnival and will never go on another. Funny that Carnival Corp. owns Princess
Nice that you have the money to go on several cruises each year and have extra money for gratuities. Many people would be thrilled to have an inside cabin for one cruise that they’ve saved for. If you have an inside cabin, you’d appreciate some indoor space by windows if there’s cold weather. As for gratuities, good service should be an given without a hand out for extra money on top of the gratuities you are already required to pay on cruises.
@@lauriewu-jf5nh Nobody on this ship had their "hand out" as you put it. Just some of us understand it's nice to give some extra to those who offer superior service. If your service is just good, let the tips you already paid stand. If people go above and beyond, put a few extra bucks in their hand.
GREAT point that Princess cold weather ships need more indoor space. Same happened in Norway and I was bummed.
Thank you for the video. I believe we need to rethink the word “Hate”. Having an interior cabin is fine, but in my opinion having a balcony is a must on an Alaska cruise. I know the cost is quite a bit more but it’s well worth it. I’ve been on dozens of cruises with most major lines and the food can always be hit or miss occasionally. The specialty restaurants on Princess are fantastic and a great value. I’m sorry you experienced disappointment in your service. This has not been my experience on Princess. I recommend everyone needs to take a breath and go with the flow, you’re on vacation. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

I just returned 6 days ago from a 14 day Alaska cruise on the Royal Princess. The ship is amazing! The crew is amazing! The food in the dining rooms was top notch too. There was a HUGE visibility of managers and officers working alongside the regular crew. That really impressed me. We had a great cruise director Dan who also had a nice staff. The production shows were disappointing (only my opinion) but there was pleanty of other things to do.
She is way wrong is saying this is not a good ship to sail to Alaska on. Yep, it was cold but what do you expect? I can't imagine anyone wanting to be inside on a lounge when you are cruising some of the most beautiful sites on the planet. Once again, if you are thinking about sailing on this ship to Alaska, ignore this review and do it!
I agree, ships sailing to colder weather destinations should have a solarium.
I believe the Majestic Princess may be the only Royal Class ship that has an indoor pool and the Instead of the Sanctuary it has the Hollywood Conservatory which is enclosed. Great for Glacier Bay viewing.
Yes, I Cruise on the discovery princess and I love everything about that shit the entertainment the service the people the food was excellent. I have no complaints about Princess 9:46
We have done 9 cruises with Princess. We have tried Disney (our first cruise in 2010 that got us started again), Carnival and NCL. We did that to see the differences for us and we just booked 5 more sailings with Princess on different ships. I agree that Royal Princess's layout is awkward, and we were not that impressed with the ship back in 2019 when they were first beta testing the Medallion. I have to agree that the Medallion app needs to be tweaked even more. Our next sailings are on the Discovery, and I am looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing!

Been on multiple cruise lines with very satisfying results with the exception on pride of America (NCL). we have booked the new sun princess for our first cruise on princess. I hope we have better experience than you did. We really enjoy cruising and Alaska is on our...TO DO...list.

Princess dos not design their ships for specific areas. They are used in any particular area they feel the need for. Gives so much more flexibility for each ship.

We took a land/sea cruise with Princess on the Sapphire Princess in 2017 and I have to say, based on the videos I've seen, the Sapphire and her sisters are better suited for the Alaska cruises than their "Royal" shipmates. I especially loved the option on the Sapphire of access to the deck atop the bridge. That space was the bomb while sailing down thru the inside passage. Not an option on the Royal and her ilk ... bummer. 😕
It is so disappointing that the Royal Class ships (except the Majestic) do not have an enclosed pool area. These ships are beautiful but are lacking several details I miss from the older ones, including the promenade decks on all, and enclosed pools found on the Coral, Sapphire, Diamond, Golden, Grand, and Island. The Diamond and Sapphire were my first to ships when we started sailing with Princess in 2007, and I loved them. In three weeks we will be on the Sapphire for the first time in several years and I’m excited to see her again! Lois
I took a Mexican cruise on the Sapphire Princess, and found the ship wonderful! I loved the food, atrium and pools/hot tubs. I didn’t notice a lack of customer service.

I sailed my first Princess cruise last February on a 7 day cruise out of Galveston on Ruby Princess. All in all, I was impressed with my entire cruise experience but I would say the food was the average typical cruise food…most was bland. I’m looking forward my next cruise, a 7 day cruise out of Galveston on Regal Princess.
Thanks for sharing. The major issue in my mind is casino smoking. It's one one thing in the casino, but the smoke drifts out to the 7th. deck piano bar 😢. Regarding the Medallion app. finding you. If you are on the lido deck in the Caribbean, it's all but impossible for the wait staff to track you among the hundreds at the pool. I thought they had a pic to track you down. Maybe I'm missing something❓️They should be able to page you by vibrating your Medallion😂
Cruised the Grand Princess in August and it was good. I guess you have to chose the ship that is built to cruse in cooler areas.

I love the Grand Princess the best! Sailed her out of San Francisco on several cruises.
We sailed the Grand after they removed Skywalker's and looking forward to sailing the oldest ship in the fleet on the trans Pacific in April 2024.👍
loved the Discovery Princess. Medallion felt a bit too "Big Brother." Since they know where I am 24/7 maybe they will wait for me next time as I'm running down the dock screaming to wait.... please, wait!
This was our EXACT experience in June 2023 on Royal Princess. We might have been in the same cruise😂

Just got off the Royal Princess August 26-Sept. 2. I totally agree with most of your list.
We were on that same cruise. We enjoyed ourselves very much.
Hate is an extremely strong word and inappropriate for a review. People hated Adolf Hitler, and for sound reasons.
I would suggest that you disliked, didn't enjoy, felt something could have been better or didn't meet expectations. These are all better descriptors and more appropriate than the word hate.
Your taste in food is not the ship's fault.
Especially when someone chooses to be vegetarian.
there are two different kinds of cruises, sightseeing, and relaxing, on a sightseeing cruise you go to see the sights, the ship is secondary, on a relaxing cruise the ship is more important. You went to Alaska to see Alaska, the ship being your floating hotel. You loved the room.....hotel, check.... you loved where the ship went, check....... you hated the MDR menu, BUT you loved the noodle station and ate ice cream every day......I'm guessing you didn't loose weight?.......there are NO members of the crews that are American, except some entertainers........ship design...we cruised on the Royal 4 times.....all Carib cruises, we did Alaska on the Diamond which has an indoor pool, several of their older ships also have indoor pools....agn, didn't go to Alaska for the ship's pool.....cruise ON 73

Obviously Princess isn't for you. We've cruised Princess numerous times (as well as every other major cruise line), and have three booked. We've never found any of your dislikes to be true.

you sound like hard work . How many times did you expect people to deliver food and drinks to you like you had your own personal servant chasing you around the ship? Surely that feature if for the disabled and elderly, who have difficulty walking to any of the many venues on board !?!
I read about teenagers ordering things in the app every half hour just so staff would bring them..This is abusing the privilege and the staff. Probably why Princess started charging a $14.99 activation fee for those who do not buy their plus packages!
We did our first Princess cruise in 22 years which you can even compare from back then. We usually sail Celebrity now. We did 11 nights in Alaska on Crown Princess in August. We did not really like the layout of the ship. We liked the Ocean Now medallion service. We ordered with it 4 times and all 4 were delivered in a half hour or less! The larger orders to our room for lunch weren't totally correct, but honestly were better than the buffet, which both my husband and I hated! The food was truly horrible and it was impossible to find a decent seat, and often couldn't find a seat at all. However, we found the service very good. Strange how different each ship is.

Did Discovery Princess in May to Alaska and wasn't impressed. Definitely agree about the service. It felt like it was the first sailing that everyone worked. Didn't seem like any of them knew what they were doing.

Vegetarians should not complain about foods. It was your choice.
The buffet foods actually sucked, it was full of bland Indian, Middle East,and European foods, and most with dairy, not suited for American taste.

Pretty spot on to my experience with princess. Poor food, poor service, beautiful ship, nice rooms. Overall princess ranks low in the cruise industry.
Maybe don’t be a vegetarian. They will usually be limited in choices.

What a whiner! Food not good enough, but then admits she’s a vegetarian. Then go on a vegetarian cruise. Of course, the ship wasn’t good for a cold Alaska cruise, but not cold enough that she ate ice cream every day. Then the remark about US vs European service, implying European service is poor. Girlie, I have had some of the worst service ever in the USA. My experience of Princess cruises is that the crew go far out of their way to be friendly and helpful. Maybe stay home next time? Or learn how to vlog constructively.

I'm a vegan n I'm fine with anything vegan. Not like her complain queen. Nothing wrong about the food! I appreciate the vegan dishes they offer. Better stay home this vegetarian. Complain throughout! Book the cheapest stateroom yet expect royalty treatment.
