Expert level fursonas in my opinion as an artist arre the kind with a *story* with lore and a backstory, with actual depth, not just a character, but a character turned person
In my opinion it’s more about how well the colors and shapes and everything works together, plus something to make it unique. But for your starter it can’t hurt to go with the classic, blue dog!

Made my first OC back in high school. I've always been a bit more introverted, so a "lone" wolf (as basic as that is) stood out to me. Then Gryphons are probably one of my favorite mythological creatures. So I kinda just... smashed the two together and got a Wolf/Gryphon hybrid.
Then PMD came back into my life and I added a Torchic as my second OC.

Yeah, starter species can be pretty challenging to pick, a ton of it comes with gut feelings and are very subject to change before you finally pick one that fits you. Some people simply come up with a design and apply those themes to various species.
Sometimes you just stumble upon a species that just gets you hooked on it from the moment you see it.
My character that I use to this day is just a bunny based on a vrchat avatar a friend of mine threw together for me. I personally don't care to much about the intricacies of all the different species and stuff, I just thought "bunny cute, me bunny now" and now I am bunny.
That’s why I just made my fursona a shapeshifter.

Any sort of ungulate, or combination of ungulates in an interesting colour or set of colours is quite choice, I reckon. Not too common, not too vanilla, not too samey, but not too out there, either.
There’s also synth and Axoloids which also are digital screen based and can have traits swapped around for those who want something like it but do not want to be the same.
Synth are a fully open species and have no trait limits like protogens do.
Axoloids are semi open, you can make one for free. They have trait limits but come with an awesome art roleplay game.

I prefer Mantled Beasts to Protogens mainly because, while similar, Protogens are a lot more restrictive with what you're "allowed" to do with them, and their popularity means that if you want to customize them outside those lines, you'll be in ill favor with a lot of people.

My starter species was a dinosaur. A therizinosaurus. Yes Im a dino masker, its the cheapest and easiest way I could get involved in the fandom more. However Ive painted a few masks as different styles or even holidays, I have a Halloween one. All the same character but in different moods.

Mine is shork, this is for the more personal reason of, I realized my love for anatomy and science from a marine biology class. And I have attributes to suit it as well. I kind of stick to my own, I try to mainly avoid people I don’t know unless someone I am comfortable around is talking to them, I come of sweet and friendly but everything I do I calculate, no emotion to it just completely knowledge based, but that’s why i have such strong connections with those I hold dear, they help me break that demeanor that comes from fear and they help me feel natural and comfortable in my surroundings no matter how scared I might have been a moment ago.

My very first fursona was a fox angle demon who was extremely overpowered because I had some sort of God complex that I couldn't stand seeing my character be weaker. (And yes this was during the "beta in an all alpha school" era of YT where every gacha character had multiple lovers.) Overtime I realized how cringey it was and decided to change it but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get rid of the angel wings cuz I've grown too attached to them so my current fursona is an albino fox mixed this a snow horned owl (i think its called) the only reason I made the fox albino was because the owl even though it's majorally white, has markings so to fix it i added albino so all the owl parts are completely white which makes it easier to draw. Now in her backstory there was a nuclear explosion which is supposed to explain why only her owl parts are white yet her fox parts are a maroon for the coat, aqua for the eyes and yellow for the hair.😂😂😂 (Her mother is the albino fox and her father is the owl)

my first species was one i created that only really juuust counts. they're called ilk, creatures created of a thick, black liquid which have a default physical form that reflects their personality and self expression, but can be altered with enough focus due to their liquid nature. they have some fun unique traits which keep them in line with each other (being immune to and unable to use magic, being matte black at all times, having glowing white eyes, etc etc) but they leave room for essentially any design as long as it's animalistic to a degree. the only reason i didn't go with that species as my current 'sona is because i couldn't be bothered and wanted to make a pop punk bee lmao

The M4 carbine (officially Carbine, Caliber 5.56 mm, M4) is a 5.56×45mm NATO, gas-operated,[b] magazine-fed carbine developed in the United States during the 1980s. It is a shortened version of the M16A2 assault rifle.
The M4 is extensively used by the United States Armed Forces, with decisions to largely replace the M16 rifle in United States Army (starting 2010) and United States Marine Corps (USMC) (starting 2016) combat units as the primary infantry weapon[8][9] and service rifle. The M4 has been adopted by over 60 countries worldwide,[10] and has been described as "one of the defining firearms of the 21st century".[11]

History
Following the military adoption of the Armalite AR-15 as the M16 rifle, carbine variants were also adopted for close quarters operations,[13] the first of which was the CAR-15 family of weapons, which was used in the Vietnam War.[14] However, these rifles had design issues, as the barrel length was halved to 10 inches (25 cm), which upset the ballistics, reducing its range and accuracy and leading to considerable muzzle flash and blast,[15] meaning that a large flash suppressor had to be fitted.[16]
In 1982, the U.S. Government requested Colt to make a carbine version of the M16A2. At the time, the Colt M16A2 was the Colt 645, also known as the M16A1E1. Later that year, the U.S. Army Armament Munitions Chemical Command helped Colt develop a new variant of the XM177E2, and the U.S. Army redesignated the XM177E2 to the XM4 Carbine, giving the name as the successor to the M3 carbine. The carbine used the same upper and lower receiver as the M16A1,[17] and fires the M855 cartridge along with the older M193 cartridges. In 1983, the 9th Infantry Division requested a Quick Reaction Program (QRP) for a 5.56mm carbine to replace the M1 carbine and M3 submachine gun in service.[18][15] The XM4 was tested by the Army

Well technically nothing can be limited, my fursona, despite my basic PFP, in some of the images of him on my FurAffinity i give him fully triangle eyes, which is his characteristic, then being made of coffee to be able to move cartoony and dynamically, and change and escape situations quickly, and be overall a fun and strange character, despite the very basic design. So in reality you can do what you want really if your mind can think of it.
