That's true, actually. In these "Real Thoughts" videos I'm almost always the most excited for Rob's outbursts. lol
Considering that Rob is a co-writer of the Nostalgia Critic, I can now see why. XD
He's less hyperactive, its far more manageable.

I thinks it's because of Doug's ... vocal range.
So much media pulls the "abuse in childhood = automatic excuse for evil", and while there are plenty of characters I love that have past trauma explaining their actions, the former is just so lazy and I always liked the review for discussing that. As Brooklyn 99 says, "cool motive, still murder".
And it's almost always the same kind of abuse too. Alcoholic parent (usually the dad) beats the lone child because the other parent ran off with someone else and the child is blamed. The End.
There's more than one way to fuck up a child for life.
+Pixel Man What if instead of having an abusive childhood, what if they had an awesome one? Their parents love him and praise him and give him everything he ever wanted. And this coddling is so extreme to the point where he develops self-entitlement, and whenever he has to deal with the real world and doesn't get what he wants, he becomes self-destructive and violent towards other people? He can't fully distinguish between how the real world works and what he was raised to believe about himself. That's just the basics and could be developed further and maybe infuse some actual psychology in there, but I think that could be a solid idea, or at the very least an interesting idea.
And they assume the kid has no way around being just as horrible as their parents.

And It's interesting that statistically children of single mothers are more prone to commit violent crimes or being incarcerated for long time... It's the nature vs nurture debate all over again.

I think the biggest culprit nowadays for "edgy, artistic murderers" this film spawned is Criminal Minds on TV now, particularly one episode where the murderer was making people into puppets because "he never learned to distinguish between puppets and people." So he strung up people on ropes and dislocated limbs to make them more maneuverable and was making puppet shows, and I'm like, "...why?"

Guys, it's not a problem. They wouldn't want to work together if otherwise. You're all acting like they're gonna turn into a modern day Cain and Abel over this. And Rob isn't trying to be better than Doug. He's just amped up from talking about a horrible movie, and even if that's slightly true, that's a brotherly relationship for you. Believe me, I've got one 7 years my senior and have been in that situation. In the end, there's no hatred. So relax.

as an artist myself I do also have a certain amount of appreciation for modern art, that said I went to the Chicago Art Institute after I got my scholarship to our best art college here and had the same kind of experience. there was just a big plank of wood painted red propped up against a wall which I thought was fuckn stupid...but that was before I got yelled at for eating a piece of candy that turned out to be an art display.

I liked this movie at first, loved the visuals. But my opinion changed greatly over the years. Tarsem's second feature, "The Fall" is much better. When I saw this movie, I didn't get the artist references in the killer's mind. After college, I got all of them. The horse, Damien Hirst. The women staring up in the sky, Odd Nerdrum. Even the scene when he is cleaning the woman in the tub was partially taken from the director's music video for REM's "Losing My Religion". But these references don't go anywhere is this film.
I think The Evil Within did a slightly better job of someone trapped inside of the mind of a crazy killer. (Though it could have been improved in some ways.

Yes, definitely, but it still had its problems. I mean, it kept what needed to be mysteries mysteries, and its visual style was amazing, and I loved the conversions from one place to another.
But, to be quite honest, I would have liked to see a progression of crazy. Starting with more usual and more realistic settings to the crazy. I feel like it was a little samey in the middle. Plus, I felt like I learned a lot about the protagonist in the game, with his wife and the conspiracy, but all I remember about the villain was "Jealous child genius." Was that really it?
Oh, and the ending really pissed me off as well.
Whatever, it was still good enough for me to buy a new console, the game, and a T-shirt. Must be doing something right.
The game that did this into the serial killer mind thing best, though? Silent Hill 2 for me- no question. I feel like everything that happens, every image, every event, every character is just another way to explore the guilt and psyche of the protagonist, and it really has you questioning whether it's real or not. That game is a masterpiece.

8:24 When you were talking about those CSI episodes where the serial killer recreates their childhood home to every finite detail and imprisons a woman, I immediately thought of what Killgrave did in "Jessica Jones".
He's not a serial killer in the technical sense, but he does control minds and kills people indirectly through that method- as well as more horrifying things. Without spoiling too much, he buys the house in which Jessica grew up before her family was killed tragically and recreates it down to every small, meticulous detail. He literally made it look like a house from the 90's. It was pretty fucked up.
Oh, and there's also that creepy later episode of Spongebob where in order to coerce Squidward into visiting his house, he turns the interior of his home into an exact replica of Squidward's house. Spongebob then lures Squidward by stealing his vacuum cleaner. And then Spongebob proceeded to dress as a dominatrix, placing Squidward in chains and a ballgag in his dungeon. The episode ends with Spongebob repeatedly stabbing Squidward as he writhes helplessly in the chains while Spongebob laughs hysterically....
[cue Looney Tunes end credits theme]
Okay, okay, that wasn't the real ending, but trust me, you'll wish it was after watching that episode.
Honestly, for me, the best vision about a Serial Killer psychosy, in a movie at least, is the voice with Ryan Reynolds. I mean year, it's a comedy... king of, but it show a sort of beauty and happy thought in the wrong thing he does, and you understand why he want to stay in his psychotic situation, even if even he know that it is wrong. In movies like red dragon or the cell, you don't know why he want to stay in this horrible vision of his world, you don't see beauty, you don't even see how he can be happy like that.
By the way, if you didn't saw it, do it, it's kind of a prototype of the deadpool movie Reynolds did right after.
I watched "The Cell" several times as a teenager and loved the hell out of it-- have not seen it since, though. I'm not sure how well it would hold up if I viewed it now as an adult.

I just noticed why Sibling Rivalry is much better than Awesome comics. It´s not because it´s Doug and Rob talking, maybe it is to an extend.But it´s more natural, it´s just two people who know each other well, who have chemistry with each other share opinions. They´re funny, they never feel forced or uncomfortable when it´s just the two of them. They play off each other, they make jokes that don´t feel scripted to appease an audience. The smaller amount of people only adds to that appeal. I believe even Awesome comics would profit if it was cast by just two friends who are genuinely into comics but also aren´t afraid to step on each others toes during their discussions. To make it short, the appeal comes from the lack of professionalism and the sternness it conveys.
I've said this before: you can always get more entertainment and honesty when it's just a couple of people who have a close relationship and don't just know each other through the job. Awesome Comics is fine I casually watch it, but it feels more like individuals giving their opinions rather than having a discussion amongst themselves even though you can tell they are fans of comics.

I know this comment is 7 years old, but Freddy Krueger actually wasn't a child molester in the original film. That was added in the remake (for some reason).
"The Cell" simply looked amazing and had massive potential. Nonetheless it got ruined by its pretentiousness and a generic "romantic comedy cast"
However i disagree with you guys on the character development of the killer. I don't need to know his full psychological profile to understand how he got there. We got glimpses of his disturbing childhood and it was far more then just a beating (seriously, re watch the scene when J Lo hides in the closet) . I don't want to know everything about his past, in fact it often ruins characters for me.
And you already provided a great example by bringing up Hannibal Lector and Buffalo Bill. In the first part we don't know Jack shit about the two, thats why they are working so well
Yes, but we knew Hannibal and Buffalo Bill's personalities. We never saw Carl interact with anybody or do anything outside of killing people. And I'm talking about Carl in the real world. When J Lo is talking to him inside his mind, we have no idea which version of him she's talking to.

At the Tate Britain there was a painting that took up the entire wall. It was a canvas. That was painted black. How detailed and creative. Oh and there was a bunch of rocks that were placed in the shape of a circle, and a bunch of sea shells on a shelf, and these were considered brilliant enough to be in arguably one of the best art museums in the world.
Bit ironic that Doug doesn't like this film's "ASK ME WHAT IT MEANS" quality, even though that pretty much describes Kubrick's entire career.
I see that as a sign that Kubrick either did it right, or did something else that balances it out.
He had the talent to pull it off though, as well as the mystique. And besides, that's really only the Shining. I don't watch Full Metal Jacket or Dr. Strangelove and think "I wonder what was going through the artist's head when he made this..."

You all were talking about the killers that inspired Buffalo Bill: Ted Bundy's characteristics was put into both Lector and Bill. Bill had the same capture methods as Ted. The reasoning from the kills was taken from Ed Gein, who also was inspiration for Norman Bates. The keeping the women in the well idea was taken from serial killer and cannibal Gary Heidnik

I don't mind movies like The Cell because I don't mind pretentious people. I just think about what The Cell was trying to be and it makes me happy. Even if it doesn't actually appear on screen.
A lot of the time I listen to you guys just because I love your reactions and interactions. A lot of the movies you review I've never seen, but it's still fun to listen to you two.

The fall (2006) is, in my opinion, is one of the best and the underrated film he's directed.
To be honest, while watching this film my only thought was: Of Lynch filmed it, it would be awesome.
What do you guys think about identity? It's next to the cell along with one hour photo in my guilty pleasures.
I'm so tired of people trying to find meaning in movies. What if people just watched the movie for the sake of just the movie. It's like people who drink wine going "oh it has notes of this or hints of that" and then think if a wine is enjoyable without swishing it around in your mouth looking for depth is shit.
They do it because that's how they enjoy it -- it's just how their brains work. To them, it's never enough to just appreciate a movie for being a movie, or wine for being wine. It's actually not too dissimilar from people who analyze stories and the likes. They want their minds to be stimulated by something, and analyzing it is a good way of doing that. They don't want to have to shut their brains off and watch (in the case of movies) it for the sake of watching.
oh yeah, there is a movie that does the "blending reality and (sorta) the dreamworld" thing very well. David Lynch's "Inland Empire". one of the scariest movies (if not THE scariest) movie I've even seen.
Losing My Religion by R.E.M is the best thing Tarsem ever directed.

sure, but you really cant argue that is a good film. there are way more cons than pros to be able to say its a good film. its interesting enough for me to watch it, but im still very aware of all its shortcomings. i also like the phantom and all the pauly shore films, but i cant claim that they are good.

I REALLY wanna here your thoughts on the movie "Beyond Clueless".
Seeing as how it ties into nostalgia and dissection.
I didn't feel symbolism in The Cell all that much. That might have been what he was doing, but it didn't have anything to do with what I enjoyed about it, I just thought it was fun, creepy, and visually interesting. In the horse scene I wasn't curious what it meant, because I just saw it as "Creepy, this guy is creepy, and that's cool."
This made me think of The 13th floor. Have you guys reviewed that movie yet? I can only vaguely remember the plot now, but I remember liking it when I was a kid. I'd be interested to hear what you think.
The twist at the end was shocking.

Should do real thoughts on Nick-toons (Rugrats, Hey Arnold, etc.). Doug tore them apart, and I loved and STILL love them, to this day.
Listening to them talk about Silence of the Lambs REALLY makes me want to know if they saw the Hannibal tv series and if so what they think of it.
I love the way the two of you sometimes go "Umm" in complete unison.
You guys should watch NBC's Hannibal TV Series! It's different from the kinds of shows I've seen you do vlogs for, but considering how much you guys seem to like Hannibal I think you'll love this show. Its very visually interesting and the writing is excellent!
One of my favourite things about you guys is that you made me examine and dislike one of my all time fave movies, the Matrix. I loved how you came out of nowhere and said simply, I dont like it. Than gave a really good reason for it, and most shockingly of all, had me jumping on board with you. I still love the Matrix, but now I see its flaws and it broadens my appreciation of both it any what reviewers are supposed to be doing. I love you guys. Thank you.

My father and I went to see this in theaters, we walked out a quarter into the movie.
I remember when this came out, one of the actors (I think it was Dinafrio?) came on the Daily Show for an interview. The visuals from the clip looked very interesting... but it ended up being too gruesome for me. Maybe going to see it with my mom was a bad idea.
I like how Rob say's "Shitty episode of CSI", I wasn't aware that show actually had any good episodes.

My thoughts on Hannibal , most of it fell apart because Jodie Foster read the script and made a lot of bullshit comments that "Starling wouldn't do that." From what I read the first draft was closer to the end of the novel that was fantastic. I don't want to spoil it but it's fucking chilling and a perfect end to the series. When Hollywood got a hold of it it turned into...bland bland bland....great series and I always look forward to watching you two talking about movies.
For me there's only animated eye candy. Never felt that way about a life-action movie. I remember an episode of batman where batman when inside the joker's mind, and it was awesome. It didn't really try to mean much, it was just goofy fun.
I'll tell you one thing, you were not wrong about Molon Rouge being dumb, I had to watch it for film class, and maybe it just I don't like the director's style, but I did find the story kind of interesting.

I think you guys should do a sibling rivalry of Alice Through The Looking Glass. This movie does have good visuals, and the actors defiantly try harder and it tries to portray life metaphors as the first one did. Then the other 2 plots are hard to follow because they make no sense.
Off topic, but I have a suggestion/request: Can we make this year's Nostalgiaween all vampire-based?
A quick perusal of your old videos (on Wikipedia) reveals you've done three films based on vampires (Blade, Monster Squad and BloodRayne). This I find to be a shocking lapse on your part, given that vampires were all the rage in the 80's and 90's...
It even fits the running gag of the Steven King miniseries, with TNT's remake of Salem's Lot...
I think it'd be different and fun.
I'd like to see him do Twilight but I feel that's too easy and low hanging fruit and plus Doug has said that he enjoys the hell out of those movies (but for all the wrong reasons). Maybe Vampire In Brooklyn
I personally liked this movie a lot. Tarsem Singh is a love or hate kinda Director. Its a love for me. I can totally see why. Completely.

It wouldnt take much for this movie to be great, but the problem is they tried to make a big significant moment about using the technology to find the killer. The movie as a whole would have had more interesting if jennifer lopez character had been using the technology for a while, and it started to have an effect on her psychologically, and then started to blur the lines between reality and lingering memories/is she in the machine or out of it. Would have had more freedom to insert symoblism without it coming across as contrived or heavy handed as well.

I really would love Doug and Rob to do episode blogs for the Hannibal TV series. Hearing them talk about going into getting inside the minds of psychopaths and the mentally disturbed makes me interested in what they would think of the show. For one thing, the show handles Hannibal's backstory with far more dignity and intelligence than the bullshit known as Hannibal Rising.

I hope Channel Awesome does a Real Thoughts on Star Trek (all flims except Beyond) the week Star Trek Beyond comes out (also they do a sibling rival review on Beyond soon after).
I don't get how he missed this fact. The missing step is the fact they explained that he suffered from a specific mental issue. They go into detailed explanation of the issue and state that the abuse likely made it worse, but both he and the child suffer from the same mental disorder. iirc I could be a bit off but I believe they stated it tended to make it harder to distinguish reality from imagination.
Don't know if you two remember enough of it for an episode, but could there puhhleease be a Real Thoughts on "Jungle 2 Jungle". I consider that to be one of the best episodes of NC (very Daffy Duck in that you're just rolling the lunacy) and I used to/still love that movie. Introduced me to stock market trading and animal cruelty.

One of the weirder modern art peices I can remember seeing in a gallery was a couple sculptures by an artist who makes full body molds of people who are being treated for things like cancer or AIDS and then casts figures of them in wax mixed with whatever drug is keeping them alive. That is the first time I remember being a gallery and just going "... I don't 'get' it. Also, I feel like this is wasting medicine."
