I can understand both the likes and dislikes for this Movie. Me? I like The Grinch. Even though the design of the Who's are hideous and the backstory of the Grinch and the love interest are really unnecessary, one thing that cannot be denied is that Jim Carrey really does shine in this movie.
Jim Carrey is the main reason my sister and i watched it for so long
after middle school we realized this movie is really mean spirited and not like the book but we loved Jim carrey as the grinch so it was worth it just to see him XD
Jim Carrey was a good grinch in my eyes
But why with the eating garbage and glass? thats never been a thing in the books
To me it's kinda like the Addams Family. They're weird and outside the norm and enjoy things that are uncommon, or just strange. Plus we never see the Grinch eat anything in any other iteration, so it isn't unreasonable.
*EDIT*
Okay so he DID eat a toothpick in the first movie. Also, I forgot to mention that this Grinch is kinda like Oscar the Grouch; green, irritable, lives with a lot of junk, and eats disgusting foods.
Matt Thornton I liked the back story. it could use some tweaks hear and there, but it was a pretty understandable. And, yeah, the love interest is just way over done. fucking stop, Hollywood!
Matt Thornton yep
Veemon Link64 well he ate a toothpick in the original short so it's likely he would eat that stuff
I heard that Director Ron Howard actually wanted to remove all of the rude humor, but Universal Studios made him put it back in. However, he was certain to leave out the worst jokes. Universal found out & put those jokes in the Cat in the Hat.
So in the strangest of F*%KED up ways I guess we could say Ron 'saved' the film from becoming even worse than it could've been, that's kinda actually scary when you look at how Cat in the Hat turned out
Whyyyy
Source? If this is true, it will give me a little more respect for Ron Howard. (Even if the movie is still bad and should never have been made.)
That's reverse censorship if ya ask me! Usually it's the bosses REMOVING the sick stuff!
Well that explains a lot😒
"I can't blame Jim Carrey for this, because nobody stopped him."
"... nobody stopped him."
Somebody stop me!
ROFL
Boo!
I actually had no problem with the Whos. They didn't deter me from the film, and they still don't. To be honest, how the movie played out was kinda clever. Sure, in the cartoon the Whos already understood the message and that's how the Grinch turns over a new leaf. But the movie went about it in which they didn't have it all together, which kinda makes them more relatable imo. Plus, this felt like a film where the Grinch and the Whos would learn from each other in order to change for the better.
Mr. Couver I feel the same way
Brandon Spain totally agree with u that’s one of the reasons why I disliked this movie
@Brandon Spain It honestly makes you side with the Grinch. There's even a scene where he chews them out for it.
Remember when he sinned this with CinemaSins in rhyme?
That was one of the best collaborations of all time!
Yeah, of course I agree
But there are some moments that are pretty cringey
"lets never do this again"
"yes"
Ike Rants I found them trough movie fights
Kimani Wilson-Hunte Honestly, he and Jeremy should do more stuff together. They're both hilarious.
Yeah I remember that sins video. Jeremy was like wtf when Nostalgia Critic chimed in.
"Adam Sandler as Jack Skellington."
Guys, stop, you're gonna give me nightmares
But did they give you a nightmare before christmas? ;)
But did they give you a nightmare before christmas? ;)
Rob Schneider
Adam Sandler as Chris Chan
Imagine whitey singing What's This
But the chart says...
Sally Scotland the charts! HA!
@@ssj4jason737 🤨
But the chart says...
But the chart says...
But the chart SAYS...
As someone who grew up with it, I remember all the good parts of the movie standing out far beyond the ugliness and bad humor. That scene where he has a change of heart when he learned the true meaning of christmas rally hit me hard.
If the Grinch wasn't played by Jim Carey, literally no one would care about it. There's a few moments that are genuinely fun but it's so flawed that alot of it doesn't hold up but goddamn it, i still enjoy this every year. Also Space Jam is beloved BECAUSE it's so damn stupid, plus the 90's cheese surprisingly helps it out.
Exactly. Carey so embodies the role that it is hard to hate the film because of it.
Arcademan09 I was a huge Jim Carrey fan when this movie came out and I mean I'm one of the few people that LOVED The Cable Guy but even I hated the Grinch.
Arcademan09 No man Space Jam is loved for that bitching ass soundtrack! Every song was gold!!! Lol
zackitachi1 I'm part of the Back In Action masterrace. Space Jam means nothing to me. 😐
funny, as a kid i had the exact opposite problem, i was so confused by The Cable Guy when it was out
Adam Sandler is Charlie Brown; Megan Fox is Lucy Van Pelt; Tara Reid is Sally Brown; Shia Laboef is Linus Van Pelt; Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian are Peppermint Patty and Marcie; and Johnny Depp as Snoopy in Charles M. Schultz's Charlie Brown Christmas.
Stephen Atwood Thanks for casting my nightmares for the next few nights. All we need is Michael Bay to direct and we're all set.
.... But you forgot Pauly Shore!
You sir just made my whole week!
And also, Nicolas Cage will play Schroeder. There will be a number where he will play "Flight of the Bumblebee" on his piano.
Actuallyyyyyy.....Johnny Depp as Snoopy would be badshit insane...but also kind of fu@#ing awesome:D
I still like Grinch and Space Jam but I'm not deluded enough to defend them as great movies. And yes I've rewatched them, I actually had Doug sign my copy of Space Jam at a con last year
Time to get Korey Coleman to also sign it.
Ditto :)
I'm just imagining Nightmare Before Christmas starring Adam Sandler as Jack. Rob Schneider as Dr. Finklestein, Kevin James as Oogie Boogie, Steve Buscemi as the Mayor, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, and David Spade as Lock, Shock, and Barrel...
Mew Kiichigo what about sally?
Sheri E Kat Dennings as Sally
Honestly, I think Steve Buscemi would be good as Dr. Finklestein.
I'm determined to make that happen
Yeah. Its called Hotel Translvania 🤨
Grinch: I'm an idiot
Echo: you're an idiot.
UnderdogIQ22
[whispering] Alright fine! I'm not talking to you anymore! In fact, I'm going to whisper! So that by the time my voice reverberates off the walls, and gets back to me, I won't be able to hear it.
...
You're an idiot
That IS the only moment worth watching in the movie
Anybody else likes this as a guilty pleasure?
Oh absolutely. The sheer nostalgia I get from this movie is immeasurably strong.
Giovanni Orellana Yep. I mean I honestly know this is technically a bad movie. However I legitimately have some fondness for this movie probably due mostly to nostalgia. It's like Hocus Pocus where its just a good movie to watch around the holiday it's representing for the sake of fun, despite it obviously being pretty dumb.
Jim Carrey had a few funny bits
Giovanni Orellana Yeah
The main draw is Jim Carrey. His body acting and mannerisms made this version of the Grinch (the character, not the movie) enjoyable. Can't says the same for the movie though.
You gotta love that one scene where the Grinch crashed that small car and then runs away from the explosion. That was probably my favorite part in any family film ever
Listen, please don't worry that this movie is going to overshadow the original. This movie came out when I was three, and not only did I never prefer the new one over the old one, but every year on ABC they ran the original special way more than they ran the new one.
9:58 "if you have a friend who annoys you cuz they enjoy Christmas too much..."
Just look to your right, Rob.
I like the movie BECAUSE it's stupid and crude yet still energetic. I'm not much of a Christmas person, so if I'm pissed for whatever reason during December or just get tired of 2 straight months of constant 'feel good'-ness, I need a movie that lets me feel that while still under the guise of following Christmas cheer.
This is my favorite Christmas movie and I’m unapologetic about it.
L
1966 is my favorite
No one is demanding you to apologize
This movie will forever be my Christmas favorite. I have no shame in saying that.
What about 66’ one
What the hell is wrong with you?!?!
I'm now just imagining Jack Skellington trying to start a political uprising in between kidnapping Santa Claus and trying to understand christmas
One of the best parts of the movie was Jim Carrey's rendition of You're a Mean One.
I remember when this movie came out, my brother and I were so stoked to see it, but our mom immediately was like, "No. You are not watching that until you see the cartoon." Even then we still preferred the Jim Carrey version, and while I still like it to this day, I can see why other people, particularly my mom and her generation, liked the cartoon version more.
What Happened To The "What You Never Knew" Segments?!
I MISS THEM SSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!
If There Was Another "What You Never Knew" Segment, Do The Scooby Doo, Danny Phantom, Rugrats, Lilo & Stitch, And The Fairly OddParents Franchies.
I WANT YOU TO DO THOSE CRITIC-----I MEAN DOUG WALKER!!
Dexter The Nostalgia Toonster
I NEVER KNEW THAT!
New movie idea: A live action "The Nightmare Before Christmas" starring Pauly Shore as Jack Skellington and Shaq as Oogie Boogie, cameo appearences include Rob Schnider and Dane Cook. Produced by Happy Madison productions with a Robert Rodriguez budget, written by Joel Coen (Garfield) and directed by Uwe Boll. Make it happen Doug
Oops I fixed it
Uwe Boll?
I truly love this film and think its genuinely great but I do 100% understand people who dislike or despise it for all different reasons
Can also say this is for me a christmas classic I grew up with since I was born in the late 90's so because of that I have very fond memories and a special bond to it that makes it even better
Yeah Space jam’s 90’s ascetic and datedness actually help make it popular and fun to watch
I think Russel Brand as Jack Skellington could work as an SNL sketch. Get Bobby Moynihan as Sandy Claws and Kenan Thompson as Oogie Boogie and you have a perfect Halloween special.
Don’t give them any ideas
With David S Pumpkins. 😳
That could...actually work
One funny thing is that Audrey Giesel, Suess' second wife and widow, was an executive producer for both "The Lorax" and "Horton hears a Who". So basically, she helped to continue to butcher Suess' legacy.
Horton Hears a Who was the best one. It really felt close to the original story.
Executive producers don’t really do much, and Audrey Geisel actually ended up banning anyone else from making any live action seuss films cause grinch and cat in the hat sucked.
Hey, I happen to LOVE this movie. It's not even a guilty pleasure. I just love it.
"I hear it's the same people who made the Lorax..."
Rob's reaction is hilarious.
My first exposure to The Grinch was the cartoon. We had things like The Grinch, Rudolf, Frosty, etc. all on a recorded VHS that we watched every Christmas. I remember when the live-action movie came out. Even then, I didn't go crazy for it. I think I just enjoyed having it on. It's awkward, looks gross sometimes, and plays out nothing like the original story, but my expectations were never high, so I was never disappointed by it. It's not hurting me. It's just there.
One question: Is it *really* a bad thing if an adult (who was young during the initial release of the movie) still likes this movie? Is it *really* that questionable? They're not hurting/offending anybody. It's not required for an adult to like/appreciated a film like Citizen Kane, just because they're more mature. Not every adult has to hate How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I doubt everyone who loved Space Jam as a kid see it with more negative/critical eyes. Some people still see it as entertainment. I don't see why this should be seen as "objective," rather than "subjective." Maybe admitting to liking a film like How The Grinch Stole Christmas can be just as mature as mature as glorifying a more higher class movie. The sames goes for the Star Wars prequels, the Matrix sequels, and the Hobbit trilogy.
You don't have to understand/agree, but *at the very least* respect another person's opinion when it comes to art. That goes for anyone. A movie that's trash to some people, can be a masterpiece to others, and vice versa.
MASSEFFECTfan101 Yeah, let people like what they like.
Yeah that's the annoying thing about critics
I'm just gonna say this. Doug is a massive hypocrite.
He used to have this segment talking about unpopular movie opinions on every 'Con he used to go to, to try and understand the point of view of someone else who might like/hate a movie he doesn't, and he always started by saying that taste was always subjective and to respect that fact.
And look at him now. He can't fathom people, adults who grew up with either The Grinch or Space Jam, liking them still, because that fact is apparently an alien concept to him, like he did a complete 180 on the "art is subjective" opinion over the years. I like Doug, I like Rob, and I like the stuff they do, but sometimes Doug specifically says or gives an opinion that utterly perplexes me or throws me off.
He said he TRYS to understand. Try =/= succeed.
Still doesn't mean he's respectful of other opinions now. I watched those segments on UA-cam, and back then he seemed understandable enough about other opinions then, so why does it seem he doesn't comprehend them now?
Okay, I had to get this out of the way, I only like the Grinch only because of Carry's performance. His line delivery just somehow just makes me chuckle and I don't mind it so much. However, I won't say that it's a well done movie, okay? There are some of the technical that doesn't hold up especially with the writing choices and plot elements and that one scene (guess which one) that really disturbs me even when I first saw believe it or not.
I may like Ron Howard's The Grinch but I still prefer the Chuck Jones' classic.
Let me guess ... is it the scene where all the kids laugh at him? I didn't like that one when I was little.
No, It's the one where Doug Walker attacked the most that end of all arguments. It's when the Grinch shoving Max's butt on the mayor's puckered lips.
Ron Howard already knew he couldn't beat the Chuck Jones version.
You sir are a pony.
Ur friend too!
I think the reason why they feel like they've talked about "The Grinch" before is because they DID in fact talk about "Grinch" frequently when they talked about "The Cat in the Hat".
I never understood why a ton of people like the live action Grinch film. Despite the fact that Jim Carrey was trying and his makeup and costume were good, every complaint that you guys have are my thoughts as well. Thankfully, the new Illumination Grinch film was miles better. Granted it wasn't amazing, but it did do a much better job in trying to represent Seuss's original work. Also, I'm going to say this now, I think some of the hate that people wanted to have to the new Grinch movie has more to do with Illumination themselves more than the product.
You're overexgating both the uh...problems of the movie and how much people like it. I've never meet anyone who will say it's an amazing classic aside from those nostalgia. Also, this thing is a masterpiece compared to cat in the hat. I can't see how anyone can get really upset over this movie when that garbage exists.
He's made it clear that he finds this movie better than Cat in the Hat, but that says very little.
AntonyBlalock Despite being better than Cat in the Hat, it's still a bad film.
I really respect Doug Walker and what he's done, but he really sounds like an annoying, paranoid, overprotective old man in this video. The going on and ooooon about "this is anal rape of a timeless classic" and how "the nostalgia goggles must come off and people need to realize they only liked it cuz they were dumb kids" is so horribly preachy and condescending.
I would like to make clear that I know neither Doug or Rob are that sort of vindictive person who thinks their opinion is objective fact, but they both *really* edge on it here. Doug says very briefly that he's open-minded to the idea of changing it, but drones on and _ooooooooon_ repetitively and at leeeeeength about how they changed the Whos into consumerist assholes and how it was a half-satire of the original; he brings up these 2 points as if they're major, unintentional flaws when it was really just _the fucking point of the movie!_
It feels like he prefaced the discussion like that early on purely out of a sense of obligation, since he always tries to be diplomatic about his opinions. If he was more upfront and just said "It's a piece of wretched shit, don't show it to your kids, you'll make them retarded," I would've respected and had no problem with that straightforwardness. Don't try to take the high ground, just say what you fuckin think.
Personally, my family watches *both* the original and this one every holiday. So no, my fragile dumbass child mind was not corrupted into liking something Old Man Walker doesn't approve of.
Macaco Macabra it's not even bad. The movie still has good moments that makes it enjoyable
***** That's not a bad piece of mind you're expressing here, and in a way you are technically right. However, Doug and Rob are much more likely than not to be open minded ( I haven't met them in person so I don't know, but I believe they are). And the reason why they seem like the are "overprotective" of the original Grinch is because it's something that's dear to their hearts and is a pretty good short film, and this one doesn't capture the meaning of that at all (even if it wanted to mean something else it didn't do it very well). Also even the most open minded people can act overprotective of something they like, because they're human most of all. Do you like both films and watch them with your family every year? That's quite a nice tradition you got going there.
Idk about y'all but I liked the CGI Horton Hears a Who
Dyami Vieira I think it's great too. It has issues but it's pretty well done.
Dyami Vieira They don't like that one, but even Doug and Rob agree that it is the best of the Suess feature film adaptations. And it is pretty good.
Dyami Vieira It's definitely flawed, but I adore it.
I watched the film about 3 months ago, back in November, and i really liked it. Sure, it has it's flaws, but i really enjoyed it.
Dyami Vieira Horton Hears A Who is probably the only one of the Seuss movies I can define as great.
The only real saving power of The Grinch is that it is not as bad as Cat In The Hat. Then again, Plan 9 isn't as bad as Cat In The Hat. Cat In The Hat makes Troll 2 look like Gigli married Waterworld.
Jim Carrey played a green character twice.
The Mask(just his face was green) and The Grinch(all of his body was covered in green prostheitcs even his face).
After doing The Lorax, I think it was inevitable that they would do the one that started it all.
I've stated many times that this is one of my favorite movies ever, which makes it all the more painful when I found out that the Grinch is gonna be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch in the 2018 remake. I got nothing against Mr. Cumberbatch, but for my money, nobody pulls off the Christmas hating What like Jim Carrey!
Anyone remember 10,000 fingers of Dr. T? That was the first real Dr. Seuss movie and I think Seuss himself wrote the screen play. Great stuff! The Critic should review it!
I will only swear by the animated Chuck Jones version of The Grinch.
I went to see this movie in the theater when it came out. I was 6 years old. Do you know what 6 year old me thought of this Grinch movie? Despised it, even back then.
Here's something I learned from one of my teachers in Middle School:
When Universal went Dr. Suess's wife asking for the film rights to the Grinch, she was the one that listed casting Jim Carey as the Grinch as a prerequisite.
(Believe it or not, it's your choice.)
Thank God they didn't give their real thoughts in rhyme
I actually tried watching this again after all these years even though I watched this as a kid and didn't like it then. I've met a lot of people at my college who love this movie ironically and un-ironically. I still couldn't stand it. I think Carrie as the Grinch has his moments and one liners but that's it. I fully agree with the NC review. In fact I watch the review every holiday season instead, it's funnier than the whole damn movie.
Saw this in theaters. As a Christmas loving 8 year old I remember very traumatized by the scene where he burns down the Christmas Tree.
11:00 Nightmare Before Christmas looks as good as it does because Henry Selick made it. He knows how to do dark and colorful in the right ways for the story. His color palettes are never just dingy: all grays. Nightmare and Coroline showed you have a true black, a true white, gray and bam! a bright color, so that even the B&W of Jack isn't dingy like Corpse Bride.
Even the dingy scenes of Corpse Bride are more lively than the live action Grinch.
I would die as a movie critic
I liked The Grinch... not as a guilty pleasure... I don't feel guilt... I just like it
almost all the jokes
the costumes
meh! I just like it
Dennis Orozco be proud of it I love it too I respect their opinion but it's apart of my Christmas cheer
@@imoor1 why do you like this version. This version is stupid.
star wars fan 167 uhh cause my opinion
@@imoor1 I respect that I personally hate this film I like the Chunk Jones one but I repsect your opinion
Jim Carrey may be best known for his comedic roles but you guys should review his movie The Majestic he was fantastic in that.
The Chuck Jones conversation made me want to see a Real Thoughts on the Looney Tunes movies as well.
I'm with the Walkers on this one. I never liked this movie, and while I'll give Jim Carrey credit for being the perfect Grinch, I couldn't get into the rest of the movie. Well, at least it's better than... that other movie that shall not be mentioned... just thinking about that movie makes my balls wither in pain.
Cat in the Hat? ;)
Joshua Jezeski That movie shall be known as Mike Myers' crushing failure.
Doug's hairline is really distracting without the hat. lol
I remember watching the movie at school with my friends and they didn't mind it. I was ashamed...I wanted the old animated version! I didn't want to have a romance in a movie about the Grinch, who hates people. I didn't need his backstory, I just wanted to see his journey to be kind again. Smh, this version made me so mad.
I always disagree with them when they talk about how the Whos shouldn't be overcommercialized. They're acting like it's a problem with the movie (maybe it is), but they don't seem to realize that it's a problem with the characters. Cindy Lou-Who's whole ordeal in the movie was that she was trying to look at Christmas past what you can buy from a store, but none of the Whos see it like that. Not until the end, after the Grinch stole their presents, when they realized that they didn't need the presents at all. It's still the same message, just told in a different way. For the short, storybook-like wonders that the book and Chuck Jones special were, their whole focus can be put on the Grinch and letting the rest of the story be simple and charming. When making a full-length movie though, you don't have to be bound by that. You have the time to establish every Who as actual characters with real conflicts, and the writers chose to make their conflicts tie into the moral of the story.
That's not to say it was done extremely well or anything, or even that the movie's way was better (it isn't), but I feel like Doug and Rob keep missing the point of the Whos in this movie.
uknownada Yeah, thinking about that makes it feel more meaningful, and less like they just chopped and changed it to make for time, but I still think the humor is obnoxious and gross, the constant smoggy look of Whoville is unpleasant, and Jim Carrey’s acting is cringe-inducing.
People who say 'oh you had to grow up with this movie and watch it as a kid to like it' are lying. I was seven when I saw this movie in theaters and it horrified me, Jim Carrey and all. Everything about this movie was just ugly to me as a child.
So yeah I'm with the Walker Bros on this one.
I was in fifth grade and this played for all fifth graders. NO ONE LAUGHED DURING THE WHOLE MOVIE, NOT A SINGLE SOUND BUT THE MOVIE
I feel like the movie was mired with "this is our attempts at modernizing and adapting Dr. Seuss to the new millennium." So it was more experimental mixed with everything corporate and focus tested.
Jim Carry was amazing. He did amazing in his role, his lines were funny, like the schedule monologue.
The whos were terrible and unlikable, but it did allow for *more* character growth, not just the grinch gets to grow as a person.
Did the grinch need a backstory? No, he didn't but they had to fill time somehow.
In the new version of the Grinch in the works, Benedict Cumberbatch is voicing the Grinch
I watch this movie every year. I know that it's not TECHNICALLY a great movie, and it definitely has its flaws (I, too dislike the dog ass-kissing joke), but I still enjoy it. It's mainly due to Carrey, who I find to be absolutely hilarious. Anytime it's just him ranting and raving to himself or interacting with any of the other characters, I can't stop laughing. The dialogue is clever and he just delivers it so well. Everything else I view as just sort of okay, but Carrey really pulls it through for me. I view it as its own sort of separate entity from the Seuss-iverse. If I want a REAL good holiday classic that gives me Christmas cheer, I'll go to the original. If I just wanna have a good laugh, I'll watch this one.
I am really crossing my fingers for the animated reboot. They cast Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch, which is fantastic casting, but it has all the same production crew of the Lorax, meaning that the message will probably be super screwed up, even if the message of the Grinch is probably easier to tell than the Lorax.
I liked this movie solely for the nostalgia that comes with it for me. I saw this movie in theaters as a kid with my dad, his would-be-wife, and my cousin. I loved it as a kid, as an adult I recognize that the film is bad, but I just think back to how much my cousin and I laughed and enjoyed this film together so, The Grinch is a real guilty pleasure. I've ALWAYS loved the Chuck Jones cartoon so much more than the live action movie, but yeah. It's a personal nostalgia.
I grew up religiously with Dr. Seuss, but this film really ushered me in with Jim Carey's performance and the production design being wonderful. The ominous tone to Christmas felt very reminiscent of how Grinch saw it, until the end. I really feel if you two saw this when you were children you may have loved it. The rose tinted glasses come off when the bad jokes come through, but the plot follows the cartoon pretty closely and I enjoy the back story they gave to specific characters. It isn't a Christmas classic, but it isn't half as bad as other Christmas movies, and definitely not half as bad as MOST Dr. Seuss adaptations.
The Grinch? more like "The easily annoyed lonely guy"
Well yeah it's illumination. they spend more money on advertising the film then making a film good.
they play it safe and some how they make money off of it still.
It's scary because... just imagine good studios and companies start doing this... because it's easier to make money off of these generic safe films.
But then again if the bar is set high like Disney already have... if Disney is going lower to illumination's level that might not cut it or work on people... hopefully.
Dr. Seuss much be rolling in his grave, he's drilling downwards into the center of the earth.
I believe it's because you two first did Cat in the Hat then the Lorax real thoughts that you do pretty much just talk about all the Seuss films both times
If you're just calling it "The Grinch, can't we get Rob's thoughts on Halloween is Grinch Night and The Grinch Grinches The Cat in the Hat? He doesn't write the editorials so we might as well get his thoughts here
I'm 43, have the movie on blu ray, and crack up every time I see it. So shove it, Doug. Lol. Not everone has the same tastes.
Completely disagree. Maybe it’s not a loyal adaptation…but it being loyal or not doesn’t take away from the fact that Jim Carrey was great in this role & for what they accomplished, this movie was very fun & entertaining for kids & adults all around & to this day.
I recently met one of the set designers who worked on making Mount Crumpet, it was very interesting to me to hear because he said they made that whole set piece out of foam and wires so it was really interesting to think that’s so freaking hot along with all that makeup
Even as a child I thought this was ugly, dumb and I hated it
They better not ever do a remake of the nightmare Christmas, that movie is a freaking masterpiece
Which Jim Carry Seuss movie role did you like better: Grinch or Horton?, both playing off whos.
I do like how when the Grinch discovers Cindy Lou on top of the sack that gives him the strength to lift the sleigh
I didn't even need to check my notifications because I'm on UA-cam 24/7 lmao-
Thotkeisha Same here. I'm an addict.
I liked Carry’s grinch, it just wouldn’t be the same without him ..it might not have been great but something about it leaves a special place in our hearts 😊
Honestly, when I was younger, this movie fucking terrified me. I hated this movie when I first saw it and my parents and I watch the original every year for Christmas.
My opinion of the movie is the same one that Nostalgia Chick has. I really should hate it, but there are a few things in it that I find charming that makes it a guilty pleasure.
The Kraken Experiment Nostalgia chick sucks
I enjoy this film. It's also one of my Dad's favorite Christmas Movies (BTW he's 54).
When Jim Carrey first got into the full Grinch costume and makeup and everything, at the end of the day he ran to his trailer after getting cleaned up, and put his foot through the wall of the trailer and screamed, "I'M DONE!! Get someone else! I can't do this!" His aid when and got the director, who came in and and said to him, "I know a guy, let me talk to him and he can help." So, Jim agrees, and the director got an ex-CIA agent who was responsible for teaching agents how to *endure torture* if they are ever captured! That's literally the only reason he was able to maintain his sanity during the filming! I can just see poor Jim going over to him on set and crying, "I'm blacking out!! I'm blacking out!!" and the guy taking him by the shoulders and saying, "Jim! Jim. Breathe. You can do this! You got this! Just 2 more hours of hell!!"
That makes me have a lot of respect for Jim Carrey, that he managed to endure *torture* for his movie. He deserves some serious street-cred for that!
If you guys like dark comedies check out Heathers, just saw it recently and it was hysterical.
It's possibly the only movie I've seen where a main character is a school shooter (or equivalent)
edit: whoops, forgot the subjective
HEATHERS IS MY SHIT OH MY GOD. I'M LEGITIMATELY GAY FOR HEATHER MCNAMARA AND BETTY FINN.
The thing that bothers me the most about the Carrey Grinch is how they handled the story's moral.
In the original book (and by extension, the Chuck Jones special), the reason the Grinch's plan ultimately failed is because the lavish decorations and colorful presents that he stole weren't the actual reason the Whos celebrated Christmas. It was the warmth, joy, and togetherness of the holiday that the Whos cherished and loved, and that sentimental and passionate feeling is something that you can never physically steal. That's why the character's revelation at the end was so important, it's him realizing that again, maybe Christmas "means a little bit more"...
The morals in the Carrey Grinch are, first off, not even ones that the Grinch by himself learns. They make it so that the Whos have to learn them as well, but we'll get back to that in a bit. One of the morals in the Carrey movie is basically to not give into being materialistic and enjoying what you do have, like family and whatnot. And to also not judge people by their appearances and to let go of the wounds of your past and not let it dictate your future. And these are all fine morals, don't get me wrong, but there's one small detail that seems to be overlooked here...
THE ORIGINAL ALREADY HAD A PERFECTLY FINE MORAL! Why replace it with these other morals?! And going back to how the Whos have to learn these morals too, I find that entirely unnecessarily. Part of what made the moral in the original so great is that the Whos didn't have to suffer through the Grinch's scheme, they already knew what the holiday was about. Their happiness regardless of their stuff being stolen reinforced that the Grinch could do whatever he wanted to but it'd never ruin Christmas for them, thus forcing him to realize this moral for himself. Having both the Grinch AND the Whos needing to learn these morals ruins the impact that the message could have had.
But yeah, that's my two cents on what bothered me the most about the Carrey Grinch. Feel free to agree and disagree if you'd like. And if you have any counterarguments, feel free to tell me, I'm interested to see what others have to say.
PS: I'm surprised neither Doug nor Rob touched on how Benidict Cumberbatch is voicing Grinch in the reboot...
I must be an odd ball in my generation. I remember watching this as a little kid, and I thought it was so dumb even then. As I have gotten older and my friends still love this movie I'm just trying to figure out what drugs they're on.
can we please make a meme off of Rob saying no seriously I think we found something that just beat Darth Vader's no
to me it's nostalgic, it's a huge guilty pleasure
I love the original cartoon, and I love this version. They are both their own things, and there's plenty of room for both versions to exist. I've never met anyone in-person who reviled the Carrey version like this, and it's considered a classic among my close friends and family. I honestly wasn't aware that it was so hated until recently. Usually when I revisit childhood movies or TV shows, the veil of childhood nostalgia is lifted and I realize how much didn't hold up or age well. But each time I revisit this, I just don't see what people who hate it are talking about. I'm genuinely baffled. Maybe it's just a "cool" thing to hate and be hyper-critical of? Like Titanic? Or people who think they're clever by making Stockholm Syndrome jokes about Beauty and the Beast?
I think the Faith Hill song is really great.
Jim Carrey is a hilarious actor. I put no criticism on him. But watching him in this role was utterly grim.
*I guess that rhymes*
I'll be honest, but this movie is a huge guilty pleasure of mine, and I have personal reasons as to why. When I was young, I knew NOTHING about Dr. Seuss. The only Dr. Seuss related thing I had was this movie. I watched it a lot when I was younger, and still do right now. However, that doesn't mean I don't agree with a lot of your points. I agree completely, this film looks extremely overblown, and it is. Though the sets and costumes are visually amazing, they go by too fast too be truly appreciated, and there is the feeling that it is too much crammed into too little. Besides this, the supporting cast have very little to do, and the presence of Anthony Hopkins as the narrator is rather puzzling. Besides that, several weak story points are added, for instance, like the romance between the Grinch and Martha May seems completely superfluous. However, when I watch this movie, I watch it for Jim Carrey, who steals the show as the title role. He is simply hilarious! He does, however, run a close race against Cindy Lou Who, who is unbelievably cute. The difference between this movie, and the cartoon, is that this movie is set more from the point of view of the Grinch. In the cartoon, the Grinch is the villain, a grumpy old hermit who is jealous of the Whos and their happiness. The Whos, in the cartoon, are just simple, country townsfolk celebrating Christmas, and when the Grinch finds he cannot destroy Christmas, he knows he cannot make them suffer the absence he feels in his life, and finally understands the holiday spirit. In the movie, however, the Grinch is a slightly more modern take on his character. Actually, you can't blame him for wanting to do something about the Whos, who, in this movie, are a grim reflection of our society, and the crass consumerism and capitalism that yearly chokes the true meaning of the holiday spirit for material possessions. The Whos are so immersed in their own greed that it almost seems they deserve it when the Grinch drops the ball on them. The writers also make them seem as irritating and overly cheerful and loud as possible, with their gaudy decorations and foods, and creepy, sugar-coated style. Cindy Lou's reaction to this is our own, and she and the Grinch find the real meaning of the holiday. She and the Grinch are better seen as role models to today's holiday company, as a message not to lose ourselves in our own material greed that has become common to this holiday, but to instead remember what Christmas is. I think this holiday would get a much better reputation if people made it a routine to imagine a Christmas without presents or trimmings every year, just to keep that image in mind.
kristof gergely I agree with your sentiments.
When I first saw this movie (my school played on the last day before christmas break when I was either 6 or 7 years old) I remember snickering at the dumb fart jokes and Carrey's yelling, but still not liking it as a whole. I think this was mostly because I saw the original so much and I felt all the pop-culture references and obnoxious acting really took away from it. I admit, I wasn't a very smart kid, but even I could tell when I was being overly-pandered to.
This movie is great! It’s a Christmas classic. Watch it every year.
You're wrong! Didn't you not watch this video or the Nostalgia Critic review? It's a very bad movie and it was never good in the first place!!!
@@spencercarroll6363 It’s a beloved classic. You are wrong 😂
@Kevmaster2000 just because it's beloved, doesn't make it good. People like crap all the time and this movie is crap. Heck, the animated movie is 10 times better. You just have shit taste in movies.
@@leoprince691 Thank you! @Kevmaster2000 is a total moron and can go screw himself for saying that this movie is good and liking it. Piece of crap!
I understand the sentiment about new generations not understanding how important the original Grinch was, but y’all weren’t even born yet when it came out🤨. I was born after both and I enjoy both for different reasons. The Jim Carrey version barely gets the message across at all, but it’s legitimately funny.
The Grinch was bad but really silly, Jim Carey was at least funny in his role.
Jim Carrey playing the Grinch is ugh, the idea of Adam Sandler playing Jack Skellington…. That alone makes me cry.😂
This is one of those movies that proves that cartoons should stay animated
It's cause I am green isen't it
So...Steven universe vlogs anyone?
That would be great... Or anything really, it feels like Doug is barely putting out any content anymore.
David Dubuc SU might hit a wee bit close to home for them now, you know?
?
Oh, nvm
Hart hat yes
Will you ever do Steven universe Vlogs again?
Dylan Gray nope
YOU DO NOT DISS RUSSELL BRAND, HE IS SUPERSMART AND FUCKING FUNNY AT SAME TIME
RockismyAir when did anyone mention Russell brand ?
Critic did when I typed that, and I just flipped out and wrote it to wrong place, because it has nothing to do with the original question
+Anna Rose I hope they DO review Wander Over Yonder, the show was so good, and it got really intense during season 2.
It's not generational, guys. I'm older than you and all enjoyed it. Definitely don't agree on the production design being ugly. I think the issue is your Christmas movie standards are a little high.
@Digital Jedi Master
Or maybe they don’t like it?
Shut the fuck up
I think I vaguely remember seeing part of this movie in theater, I was four. I don't think I was there the whole time because I didn't want to be. At the time, I was probably scared, but I did eventually watch the whole movie and you know what? I fucking hate this movie. Jim Carey's Grinch is not bad, for he's pretty much a different character than the original, but I am with Doug and Rob wholeheartedly on this once. It's just shockingly bad to me.
Also, a new animated Grinch movie was announced with Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice. Thoughts?
