    I'll give Signs 1 thing, it did portray a shattered family quite well, as in I believe Mel was pretty much going on auto-pilot. And that scene when he makes his kids all their meals but he collapses and is comforted by his kids I thought was quite touching, he probably never cried in front of his kids before.

      None of the kids talk right

    • @benm5970
      @benm5970 2 роки тому +2

      Or the way he talks to his kids almost like he doesn’t really know what to tell them, that really plays into the whole shattered family aspect because it’s like after Mel’s wife died he doesn’t really know how to be a parent anymore

    There is one thing that bugs me about the water killing the aliens that one talks about. It is that how can they even stand on this planet when there is water vapour in the air constantly? Why isn't eating away at their skin as small drop of liquid does that in an instant?

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 9 років тому +10

      Ice Climber People have talked about it. I guess it's just too easy to dismiss if you really want to, like maybe only liquid water is harmful to them. So it's easier to make points like the maize field at dawn where the water is bound to condense on the plants.

    • @Ice-Climber
      @Ice-Climber 9 років тому +17

      Penny Lane Maybe however considering the small amount of water it takes and violent reaction that happens, even as a gas, water would harm them. Their DNA would still be reacting with the water molecules.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 9 років тому +4

      Ice Climber I agree that it would be likely but there are so many good arguments to be made without having to argue this particular point, that's all I wanted to say. Oh and that many people still have argued this particular point regardless.

    It's true that the none of the characters "talk right" in this movie, but I used to sort of justify it by assuming that the reason the children were so monotone, wooden, and robotic was because they were emotionally numbed by the loss of their mother.
    I can somewhat excuse the children for talking the way they do, but I think that's a bit of a stretch.

    I saw Signs in the theater with my mom and dad. We were so excited because everyone had told us it was a good movie. I remember after the movie we were quiet, we all walked out into the parking lot, got into the car, and I said, "...That movie kinda sucked didn't it?!" and my dad said, "How the hell could anyone think that was good?"
    Then we went to the liquor store. Good times.

    This movie freaked me out as a kid. I slept with a glass of water next to my bed for over a month. And still would have random nights where I would get water, just in case. Until I was 16. Needless to say, I don't do horror. Please someone tell me they were an easily frightened child and were also freaked out by Signs.

      I like what the film tried to do in terms of storytelling, mythology, and fairy tales as well, but I do agree that Shyamalan's cameo as "the author that's going to change the world" and the only character to die was the stereotypical snobbish film critic, was pretty dumb.

    Slumdog Millionaire has such a beautiful message. If you're poor, live in the slums and you're down on your luck, don't read a book. Don't educate yourself, you don't even have to know who the 3rd Musketier is. You just have to be lucky, you just have to wait so faith can lend you everything you'll ever need and you will never have to work for anything. That movie truly helped millions of unfortunate people and it's so moving. :.) Like you know how genious it was how the guy, dispite already having enough money to hire an investigator to find the girl, or just money to buy himslef screentime, he just kept playing risking to lose all his money knowing he knows shit. :) Genious.

    For me, I thought Signs was okay. Hell even The Village. While both films have some problems, they at the very least had some good things with it INCLUDING some clever things and interesting elements. But I think we can pretty much agree that both Signs and The Village are not as as bad as his latest films.

    You brought up Costner briefly so I'm going to say this: Kevin Costner's best role was in the 1985 Lawrence Kasdan movie "Silverado" and if you haven't seen it you should. Costner is lively, he's energetic, he's riding on a horse, screaming and yelling while firing two Nickel plated revolvers and he is awesome!

    I liked Chris Stuckmann's analysis of the film and it made some things make a bit more sense due to things needing to be picked up. Signs are probably also mentioning that we should not expect things to the told right to us, and to instead look for clues in what they show and the subtle hints. Shyamalan expected to have us pay attention a lot. According the Stuckmann, one of the main things that we had to remember was that the aliens weren't after the planet, but the humans inhabiting it (they were harvesting us). They had no interest in Earth itself, and knew of the danger. Thus, their mission was to get in there, take what they needed, and get the eff out, and they had to leave the injured behind. The pantry alien was among the injured. Also, we're only seeing the invasion through the eyes of the family, and not through other perspectives. I recommend his video of this as it gives a lot of interesting theories and points.

    To be fair, the twist of bacteria in War of the Worlds was amazing when it was first written, when the whole idea of bacteria was still rather new and unknown. Nowadays we know that if anything has the technology to travel to other planets, it will know about bacteria and know how to protect itself from these things. We've seen what can happen when just travelling to another continent, one would have to be a complete moron to travel to another planet stark naked! xD
    There's also a theory that the secret twist of Signs is that they're not aliens, they're demons, and the little girl who always wanted a new glass of water every night, only took one sip from each and left the rest standing around the house was actually blessed and so what burnt the alien/demon was not just water but holy water, though if that makes the film any better or worse... eh... not sure.

    Since there's the religious symbolism of water and wood killing non-human beings... this movie might have worked better if this whole thing was in their heads and everyone else in the town thought they were crazy or something. That way the closure in the end would've made sense. But... then again we wouldn't have had NC's epic Door Meltdown. I'm torn.

    I really liked this movie when I first saw it but then Phil Plait's review ruined it for me since I didn't realize the whole "invading a planet covered in water while being dissolved by water thing" at first. I think part of it was that I liked to fantasize that aliens invaded but were defeated by water so that I could defend Earth as a kid with water guns, and here was that idea on the big screen.

Say what you will about The Matrix movies but everyone who's seen them remembers something great and unique about them...as well as the bad stuff. Plus they knew how to direct good fight scenes, as was shown in the Matrix films and in V for Vendetta.

    I hate to say this, because I've always loved that story since I was a kid, but. . . the twist in War of the Worlds doesn't make much sense either guys. And for the same reason it doesn't work in Signs.
    Just like you can't logically have aliens who are so technologically advanced that they have mastered interstellar space travel also being confounded by wooden doors, you can't have technologically advanced aliens that have mastered interstellar space travel not understand or comprehend that microscopic organisms like bacteria and viruses exist, and that they need to protect themselves from foreign pathogens.
    How can an alien species be so advanced in physics and engineering that they can travel between the stars, while simultaneously having such a poor understanding of biology? It just doesn't work.

    +Channel Awesome Don't you consider the possibility that water is an element that these aliens never experienced before? Or is that concept too _alien_ for you to understand (sorry)? Chris Stuckmann did an amazing analysis on this movie which answers some of your questions like: Why did they consider taking the dog to a human doctor and not a vet? Why can't the alien get through a door? The latter was a case of the characters misinterpreting the events. Just because they're the main characters doesn't mean they know _everything,_ that's reserved for Gary Stu's/Mary Sue's.

    In one of my game stories part of the story involves that there had been an invasion of Earth by a species, sorta similar to Signs, but they were not like every alien you've ever seen before. They actually looked very humanoid, just being taller, their veins glow, and they had small wings on their back.
    But the 'twist' abit like this one is that someone on Earth was acid to them, this one being blood though. The thing I did here, instead of doing what Signs did where they knew this when they went to Earth, the species had no knowledge of what human blood would do to their bodies, since none of them when experimenting on the humans, dissecting them etc, thought "hey let's contaminate this blood we are using for experiments with our fingers!"

    Can you imagine what would happen if Shyamalan and Michael Bay teamed up, or at the very least Shyamalan took over the Transformers movies?

      I literally can't imagine. They're both bad, but they are as opposite as you can get in terms of effects, acting, camera work, story writing, and pacing

      ***** They would probably balance each other out, and make a good film; Bay is an over the top action film director while Shyamalan is a slow and mellow thriller film director.

    I'm one of those people who loves your guys' review, but still thinks that Signs is a fine movie. It's not a masterpiece, and it's dialog is particularly bad, but it is interesting to watch, and for the first half in particular has a very good grasp on creating and maintaining tension.
    The Village, also, is a good movie. It's a better movie than Signs, you just have to ignore the final 10 minutes.

    I thought that The Village was pretty decent towards the beginning. I was in 4th grade when it came out, the 6th Sense was one of my favorite movies at the time, and I was recently introduced to Hitchcock as well. So I was getting really into suspenseful films and couldn't wait to see it. The beginning scared the shit out of me with the things that come out of the woods and all that, but once it's revealed as the village elders dressing up, I got bored really quick. If I wasn't watching it with my dad, I would probably have been yelling bullshit at the screen.

    Make it about demons waiting in the fields to kill the family and then they are killed by the water because it is in the house of a priest. Makes waaay more sense right? On top of that instead of the "gray" alien design make some creepy as hell humanoids, like The Babadook or something.

    Honestly, the biggest problem with Shyamalan is that he started with The Sixth Sense. It was a huge hit, it was critically accailmed like mad, he got nominated for several Oscars. And like a giant dummy, he let the fame get to his head and started to think he was The Next Spielberg or Hitchcock and that he was the Master Of Twists {even though, nobody called or deemed him the Master Of Twists} and starting with Lady In The Water and still to this day {even with The Visit}, his head is WAY too big.

    With the exception of that movie I refuse to believe exists(ATLA), I enjoyed most of his movies growing up. Happening- scary especially with the crazy old lady. Lady in the Water- loved it I thought the lady was like a fairy princess (I was 10 in my defense). Signs, sixth sense, Unbreakable especially. Hell when The Village came out I dressed as Ivy for Halloween complete with the Yellow Cape my grandma made. They were the only "horror" movies I was allowed to watch anytime I wanted, probably because my parents and grandparents knew they were terrible, and probably for that reason alone I became a horror buff. So thank you Shyamalan for having movies be considered so terrible I could enjoy them as a kid.

    As a Christian, I do totally buy that there are things that we are not meant to understand and that some stuff that doesn't make sense is part of a grand plan and sometimes something bad needs to happen
    But I also believe that human beings by having free will cause things to happen that have no purpose in God's grand plan.
    Good Omens bizarrely is one of the best examples I've seen of this concept. To assume that you can understand what the plan is, even if you've been told this is part of the plan, is hubris.

    I just wanted to be the 400th commenter. But fun fact; Shamalyan got the idea for the "Sixth Sense" from an episode of "Are you Afraid of the Dark?"

    The thing about Shyamalan is that a lot of people like his religious and more morally clean sorts of movies, even if they are kinda cheesy most of the time...
    But man alive, does Shyamalan REALLY need to do some rethinking of his "plot twist" thing... (Sigh...)

    My personal biggest gripe with "swing away" is how stupid that message itself is. Why do you need divine intervention to understand "beat the thing that's attacking my kid with nearby blunt object"? If an alien - or ANYONE - is about to MURDER YOUR CHILD, you grab the nearest object and kick their ass. God doesn't need to kill any wives to make that clear.

    I absolutely despise this movie. It's probably in my top 10 least favourite movies of all-time. The acting is atrocious, the script is awful, the twists are beyond cretinous, it's pretentious, annoying and unoriginal tripe.

    While it is true that the Lord works in mysterious ways and we weren't meant to understand it all, it is true that, as Rob said, people just assume that God has a hand in everything that happens which I don't believe he always does. I believe many times things just happen by accident or by just people themselves.

    The scene that really gets me is the conversation between Graham and Merrill about God. Merrill believes because something good happened to him personally, and Graham doesn't because something bad happened to him personally. Those are both terrible reasons. Now, I kind of give Graham a pass because the "bad thing" was pretty major and he's in grief - but Merrill believes that the creator of the universe personally arranged for him to spit out his gum at the perfect moment to avoid being puked on by the drunk girl? What about all the people who *have* been puked on by drunk girls at parties? Does God just hate them? And how about all the people who didn't have asthma and presumably died from the aliens' gas attack? Oh, I know...God planned for them all to die so the could deliver a five-word message to their loved ones on how to defeat the forthcoming Mole Men from the Center of the Earth...

    I got it. Shimalamlamalan-directed and co-written/produced by the Wack siblings as a three part epic trilogy involving a secret war between the Bilderberg Reptilians and the Illumanati Alien Grays over whether the world will embrace "TP Roll Side Up" or "TP Side Down." Starring Eddie Redmayne, Hugo Weaving, Mark Wahlberg with cameos by Christopher Walken, Nick Nolte, Justin Bieber, and Tommy Wiseau. (Set/concept designs by Bo Welch)
    TELL me you wouldn't pay to see that beautiful shit. GOOOOOOAAAA! :)
