    Okay but listen…I just taught myself to knit after crocheting for 21 years (i started young) and have been knitting with worsted weight acrylic yarn because i can’t buy fancy fiber yarn for $30 a skein. LindeHobby is basically a dream i didn’t know existed. I cant wait to buy yarn that will make my projects heirloom quality. Thankyou for this video!!!

      This is one of my favorite places to get yarn. The staff is super nice, and since I live in the area, I order online and pick it up so I don't worry about paying for shipping on smaller orders. I've gotten to tour their warehouse, and the volume of yarn is INSANE. Their stock changes frequently, so it's a fun website to browse.

    I would caution with buying thrift store yarn that you should bag it up and put it in the freezer a few weeks before putting it with the rest of your yarn. Buying wool from a thrift store invited moths one time for me

      I would also caution buying yarn from eBay unless it is an actual yarn/ hobby type store, not a seller who has random goods. Generally the yarn is not bagged & you don’t know how it was kept or where. I’ve purchased from 5 different sellers within a week’s time and most the yarn was super smelly. First yarn haul was musty like it was in someones basement. The 2’nd haul smelled like it was kept out in the open and smelled like smokers/ air fresheners/cooking grease. 3rd was Hobby Store & 4th was random seller & both we’re OK. 5th &last - never again. I’ve never had bad luck going direct with yarn manufacturers/ craft stores like Lion Brand, ICE Yarns, Hobbi, Mary Maxim, Red Heart and strictly yarn only sellers on Etsy. I never rec’d smelly yarn on any of these sites.

    • @showandtellmeg
      @showandtellmeg  3 місяці тому +1

      @blacksunshine5758 It's a risk for sure, but I've been very lucky with my 2nd hand online purchases. I do freeze my skeins for a few days and maybe lay it out to remove the smell of other people's houses. The worst ive had is 2 skeins smelling mildly of maple syrup lol.

      If you are trying to kill bacteria by putting it in the freezer, you should know that labs *preserve* bacteria by freezing it in temperatures much colder than a household freezer (in other words, putting it in a home freezer is a waste of time). Honestly, I don't think buying yarn from the thrift store is any worse than buying preowned anything from anywhere. Just be cognizant of what you use your finished product for and wash it before use whenever possible.

    I got spoiled to using non-acrylic blends. I found acrylic so scratchy. It got better over the years but I still remember some of that old Frank's Nursery and Crafts and Michaels yarns being too springy and throwing off my tension. Oddly enough one of my Facebook friends saw me starting a project with Madelinetosh superwash fingering wool and she said I was brave. I also think that casual yarn users are catered to by the bulk yarns at Michaels/JoAnn for quick to make projects. Most won't do socks or a fine sweater for ages and won't know there's DK and fingering weights. Then you have to LYS buy.

    • @showandtellmeg
      @showandtellmeg  4 місяці тому +2

      I agree - I kind of hate that they market chunky yarn to beginners. I feel they would be better off with DK and then encouraged to go smaller as they get more used to yarn in general. I still do use acrylic, but I do have some types I try to avoid because you can get much better yarn for the price.

      I'm a Floridian too. I often crochet with thinner wools and blends. Wool breathes and depending on the type, can be comfortable in lighter weights for many projects. I suggest a more open stitch pattern for air circulation. Smooth spun wool yarn is usually good, or a textured blend with nubs or thick and thin spin type to allow evaporation. If you can afford to buy in bulk I recommend Yarn Paradise in Turkey, their yarn brand is Ice Yarns. You have to buy the skeins in lots (usually four or six) and shipping isn't cheap (for every $ you spend on yarn you'll spend the same on shipping), but it's still pretty affordable especially when they have a sale. I once got 36 skeins of nice non-acrylic yarn from their "going-going-gone" category for $50 with shipping.
