The difficulty of actually getting movies off the ground suggests to me that these just won't be made if Amazon doesn't do anything

@@theodorvallik1 A chase where you see Hammond's monsters. A small pursuit with a carnotaurus hiding somewhere on the screen at night. Raptors fighting among themselves and chasing him at some other point. There are so many thing to do with it. And with a small cast of maybe 3 workers with Manuel as the main, you can then focus on the props and environments.
Amazon has already committed tens of millions into a show, likely 100's of millions. How could Red Eagle not try to make some money off of it? Its frustrating bc theyve had the rights for so long, and only doing something with it now that someone else has done ALL the heavy lifting now. Wreaks of a cash grab..
They'll probably try to get amazon on board and thus make them buy the rest of the rights.

Yeah the movie announcement was actually so strange, no way there’s gonna be a show and prequel trilogy coming out in the same years by different studios with an IP that’s not like Spider-Man or something mainstream and done over and over again like that
This is just me talking out of my ass here. I’m kinda against the Age of Legends movies mostly because it’s like fleshing out Atlantis or an ancient civilization. It just won’t compare to the story/imagination you’ve had in your head.

One small critique though, the show is going to start soon and I hope that WOT content creators start to advertise this show by quickly putting out reactions/reviews/news. Sometimes content is slow in coming for WOT, coming out a week after news has dropped. Faster content will only help get the show trending and get more viewers and subscribers to the streaming service. Really want the show to finish adapting the entire series (15 books is a lot y'all) so we need to do everything we can to ensure success.
The streamers who cover WoT TV news seem to have a deal where certain people cover certain news in a certain order. I'm guessing it's an attempt to be courteous in regards to getting views? I agree it might hurt getting WoT content out faster.

What you said makes sense; not sure why they'd do it without response from the audience on the show though. It honestly feels like they're encouraging Amazon to throw as much money as they can at the project which just rubs me the wrong way. At this point its not even a business tactic.

You're right. Making an Age of Legends trilogy well would require more money in special effects than the main series itself. Building little villages and CGI-ing weaves becomes building megapolises the likes of which we've hardly imagined, as well as CGI-ing weaves. They can't actually do it. Their only leverage is to put out crappy things that make the IP less valuable. They're hoping Amazon will toss them some more cash to get the rights and make it go away. This is right in line with the people making the Billy Zane 2:00 am special.
This reminds me of when they made the the one shot wheel of time hour long TV special. Noone knew about it noone talked about it all of a sudden it was just there at 2am all those years back

Small spoiler ahead but secondly I found this passage online about the movies “When men using the One Power become insane and destroy much of the planet, a small band of women unite under the White Tower, and are humanity’s last hope of survival.” Did I miss something, White Tower Aes Sedai did not begin construction of the White Tower until around 100 After Breaking so how are they in this movie
Maybe the movie does take place 100 years after the Breaking and the passage is misleading or not well written. Or they are playing with canon.

@@truefanforum3273 It’s like our goblin lord said in his video. They helped create the Winter Dragon pilot which was god awful so they could keep rights to WOT. With Amazon taking over they may try anything for another money grab including screwing with canon

This summed up my thoughts on the news of the trilogy perfectly! I think Amazon has done a great job so far on the show and trying to keep it as true as they can to the source material while adapting it well for TV and modern audiences. And I want to be excited about the potential for new movies and an Age of Legends trilogy sounds perfect but this movie thing could just come in and... undo all of the work of the show which would suck lol Thanks for the insight Daniel! You always have the best WoT takes :)

When I saw the article, I got hyped instantly, but after reading it I do feel that the whole thing seems rather vague. Boiling the article I read down, it basically said "Guy is writing movie about the WoT." I also wrote a screenplay for a movie when I was 14 and someone could have truthfully written "Guy is writing X-Men/Gundam crossover film," yet the world never got to see it.
Without major money backing it up, I think Daniel's theory makes a lot of sense.
If I was the WoT series people right now, I'd be a little worried/ticked about the potential customer confusion.

I think most of this makes a lot of sense and you’re definitely on the right track about the purpose and meaning of the silent reaction of Sony, Amazon and Harriet, Brandon, Rafe. I think however they target is less likely to be Amazon Studios and more likely to be Sony Pictures, which they are trying to bait with a WOT-Universe project. Worst case scenario, they may try to get a bidding war between studios for the movie project. And this starts with a script or treatment, which is what they’ve commissioned. What is suspicious is the fact they felt the need to put out a press release about it this early. This sounds a lot like they already pitched the idea of a prequel to Sony/Amazon that showed little interest, and they decided to go forward nonetheless and add pressure by making the script commission public.
Speculation for speculation, I think nothing will come out of this but the first script. I doubt other studios will show interest, and I doubt Sony will be interested in a prequel/spin off this early on. There is an additional reason why they should be pretty pissed off at Red Eagle, and it’s spoilers. A lot of what these movies might cover would have been revealed by bits and pieces in the TV show itself, but now could be revealed by the movies, on their own time., without any control by Rafe and Sony/Amazon. And speaking of that, there may well be conflicts over the rights coming, as some of the canonical material about the AOL exists only in the form of passages from the main books, which rights have been leased entirely to Sony. Red Eagle I would surmise only has left to exploit the “spin off” and sequels rights. This could mean that Rafe is limited in what he can show of the AOL to material that’s straight from the main books, not derived from the encyclopedia, the notes and so on, a bit like Peter Jackson wasn’t allowed to depict some things that we know of only from the Silmarillion. It could mean also that Red Eagle won’t be able to use material referred to only in the main books, so they’d have to make up their own canon. Promising…….
Above all, this really has the Red Eagle stink all over it.

I am actually very worried that this might mean that Amazon has no rights to events from the Age of Legends. I would love to see some retrospections to the past Ages in the show and skipping on them would be a huge loss in my opinion. Let's be honest - those glimpses into the Age of Legends are one of the things that make Shadow Rising one of the best books in the series
They have the rights to the novels and everything in them, including the flashback scenes in The Shadow Rising.
I'm sure there's a popular Red Eagle booth at Jordan Con that you can walk up to and have a pleasant conversation with since they are so beloved.
My personal guess is that Red Eagle may be a sort of investment found. They probably bought the rights to WOT adaptation ahead of time, hoping to sell lately at higher price, not to produce or invest themself in the franchise further. Probably they don't even have the money to do it, their capital may be represented by the rights with no or little liquidity. It will be interesting to see if they would actually pay for the production of three movies if amazon just does nothing. Imagine the age of legends on a budget, with special effects like in "The NeverEnding Story". Think about the memes.

Any Age of Legends content would more than likely spoil parts of Rand going through the glass columns and I am 100% NOT OK with that! 😆
I 100% agree that it's a tactic for $. They announced it too early otherwise. nothing has started other than saying they plan to make 3 movies. Add to that the fact that Amazon's WOT show will very likely have scenes flashing back to the Age of Legends already. The story of that age has a lot of impact on the current time, and you can't tell the current story without talking about the Age of Legends, and in a high budget tv show, they won't just talk about it, they'll show it. Not to mention that the main antagonists are leading characters during the war of Shadow at the end of the AoL. Very interested to see where this all goes.

I think you're right. I thought the same thing as soon as this was announced. Red Eagle Entertainment has done this sort of thing before. They created the old pilot episode of WoT just to keep the television rights; they had zero intention of making that pilot into an actual TV show.
Daniel: Good analysis. I think the thing is a bluff. It would take a major studio to do the films. None of them want to touch it. Amazon can ignore it in comfort, and it should blow over. If the movies actually happen the true fans will know what's up. Critical public reaction will settle the issue.
For people who have not read the (very forbidding multivolume) Wheel of Time books, a prequel has no intrinsic marketing value - rather like Amazon's Tolkien prequel project would be if the Jackson movies did not exist. It is really hard to understand how someone could commit serious money to making these films. In any case, Amazon is not competing with these movies, which will not appear until well after Amazon's series is established (but will look nothing like Amazon's series), and so has no reason to pay them the slightest bit of attention and give them publicity or the slightest hint of endorsement.
I am optimistic there are higher powers we are unaware of which will help these movies tie into the main series flawlessly. Currently wrapping up book 4! Thanks Daniel for your summaries so I can make sure I don't miss any important parts of these wonderful books on my read through.

Daniel have you read the Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher? I heard about it, but haven't seen many trustworthy people talk about it.

If they honestly wanted to sell this on the open market they would wait until the show blew up.
Finally, someone who is saying the same thing I have since the start. This just all feels like a negotiation tactic to force Amazon to have to dish out money before they even know if it's worth it.
Also, I would be terrified if another studio did those movies. The AoL doesn't end well. Any other studio, who can't redeem LTT later in the show or explore a few Forsaken more, will have to change the ending to make it more final. So it would either end at the Bore sealing and make it appear they won, or do something radically different. And how confusing would it be for new viewers to then go watch the show and see a different tale?
My favorite part of this video is watching goblin man slowly regret using that sword for a mic mount more and more.
WoT Up did say their contact at the WOT Amazon production said they were totally blindsided by this announcement and had nothing to do with it.

Thoughts on the timing of all of this. The announcement of the non-Amazon affiliated potential movie trilogy comes a week and a half before the start of San Diego Comic-Con where it is highly likely that the Amazon production team will be having a presence to make a big announcement regarding the show (e.g. release date, trailer, etc.). This now puts the topic of these movies into the discussion and is almost certain to have fans asking questions to which Amazon representatives do not currently have an answer (based on the reports that they were blindsided by this announcement just like all of us). So that puts a time crunch on them to react to the announcement in some way or risk being in the unpleasant position of looking foolish having nothing to say when those questions are asked. Giving them such a short window grants leverage to Red Eagle Entertainment (iWOT now I guess) to pressure them into the most favorable deal they can to secure the Amazon position on this in some way as Daniel succinctly put forth.
The biggest problem is are you going to be able to get the same actors for the Forsaken from the show to the movie. Since appearance wise they will not have aged a days save a few who were not trapped in the bore.

I agree 100% with this speculation. Iwot Productions Limited are responsible for this announced movie trilogy. The president of Iwot Productions Limited is Rick Selvage. Rick Selvage of the now defunct Red Eagle Games, Red Eagle Entertainment LLC, Manetheren LLC, Hannibal Fogg LLC, and Phaya One LLC.
In summary, its literally Red Eagle doing licensing shenanigans again. I wonder if they'll hire Billy Zane again.

This seems like a no brainer. Hire a writer to flesh out some possible movies so that they are prepared in case the tv show blows up and they want to fast track movies.

Haven't watched yet, but I think it's a bit of a ploy to force Amazon to either buy out Red Eagle (iWOT?), or buy the remaining wot related film/tv properties.
Thanks for explaining about that. I am uncomfortable with the fact that Brandon Sanderson and Harriet and the Robert Jordan estate is not involved with these movies at all. I have much more faith in the TV series. Anyway, I don't know if you saw it or not, but last Tuesday night, I finished reading and listening to A Knife of Dreams. I will likely start the Gathering Storm on my next day off.
Okay. So the thing you may be onto is: Anyone who is anyone trying to hop on this bandwagon as soon as possible to make the next "Lord of the Rings and/or Game of Thrones (Done Right?)". And what I mean by that is, the next visual media Fantasy that throws us all into a state of reverence for years, combing over every second and every detail so that it is relevant decades later. And it comes down to sharing the wealth or keeping as much of their slice as possible. It's my opinion, but it looks like the people making the AOL movies are setting themselves up to eventually take over the WOT continuity IF the show bombs. That is where the tension between the two come from. The show needs to be good in order to maintain its... relevance? Again.. opinion. I'm with Daniel, I'm just glad there is some WOT content coming out that I can enjoy!
Interesting, I am still confused why the rights to the Age of Legends are separate from general Wheel of Time rights. Usually everything is exclusive with such deals, so this is really messed up and convoluted. Also, to me when it was revealed what Age of Legends looked like in 4th book was one of the greatest moment of the series, and I'd consider it spoilerish for the lore of main series.
Well it's just like the LOTR show; it can't touch what's in the movies, only the second age (i think)
@@Garaphon for some reason I thought that show possible because 1. Movies already done 2. The rights to the show will be based on Silmarillion and notes, which is different from Lotr and Hobbit. On Jordan case there's no Silmarillion, though, everything comes from the main books.

I do not like the announcement of the Age of Legends trilogy movies. I would be ok with them releasing down the line in the future, once the focus is off of the show that the fans are all excited for, and once the show is more established. Right now it just muddles things for me when it comes to The Wheel Of Time. Too early for the movie idea.
What I’m wondering is how they can market these movies to the public, especially those who have never read/heard of the wheel of time before. Like when people ask what these movies are, is the pitch going to be: “ oh, it’s a prequel to an established epic fantasy series”. I think it just comes off as awkward- if you market it as a prequel to an established series, people are going to wonder why the main series simply isn’t being made instead.
I just stared reading The eye of the world about a month ago. Due to some vacations in between I have not finished it but I al looking forward to the rest of the journey. I hope the adaptations stay true to the books.
God this fills me with so much dread, especially because of the writer. From what I've seen of his work, I don't trust him to adapt something as complex as the Wheel of Time especially when working with something so undefined in canon as the Age of Legends
Soooo, if they don't acknowledge each other, how will they deal with the characters that should appear in both? The forsaken, the dragon,... I cannot imagine they'll go with an internal voice for Rand only; they'll do some face-to-face with an actor in a black or white plane or something along those lines. And having forsaken looking different will give issues for new fans to follow/understand.

Ted Field is an executive producer of the WoT TV show, he is also the Chairman and CEO of Radar Pictures. So how is Field associated with the show and also going against it at the same time? Or did he somehow finagle Exec Producer status by allying with Red Eagle Entertainment?

I think it is not that disconnected from the show.. the director of the movie is also one of the producer of the show, and sara Nakamura, who’s one of the show consultants, said she knew of it before the news went public and she was pretty excited. If the amazon guys were all against, sara wouldn’t have made that post. Soooo fingers crossed for there to be a pretty deep conection of both productions
I’m not a a fan of the movie news. It’s too much too soon. And I’m certainly not a fan of them if they aren’t tied to the Amazon show. And what about the times where we expect the show to depict content from the age of legends? (Without spoiling anything, there are some minor scenes in the books that play out like age of legends flashbacks). Will these movies conflict with what the show wants to do? This has me concerned…

Looking back after Amazon released their series, if these movies ever do come to light, they can’t be any more disrespectful than Amazon was.

It’s like if someone else had Dunk and Egg and sold it to HBO before GOT even had a trailer rather than waiting til the height of the craze.
As I mentioned on another video about this, it does make some sense to me why they would announce now vs later because it takes so many years to get a project of this size planned, financed, written, and produced. If WOT TV Series is a hit they would capitalize best on a movie releasing 3-5 yrs into series...which means they need to get things moving now.
Also they could be hedging their bets if the show does turn out to not be a hit...right now lots of people are expecting it to be a hit and might pay more for rights or invest big $ now into producing it vs later if WOT show is only meh.

6:30 I’m on board with most of your theories. However, I don’t see how a writer would be hoping for an Amazon purchase. How would a change in ownership benefit the writer in any way. If writer is under contract, that contract does not change with a purchase of the rights unless that is a specific provision in the contract. If the rights are purchased, a new studio/developer/etc would not be under any obligation to use an existing writer. In short, writer gets no added benefit (except for the potential to get full payment on the contract without doing full work) for an Amazon purchase.
That's standard in Hollywood. The original rights-holding company can develop a script before a studio gets interested, but the studio might decide to bring in a completely new writer. They might then hire a AAA director who might prefer to bring in their own writer later on and completely ignore all previous developed scripts.
I started wot earlier this year, only the last 3 books are left. It must have been fate that I chose to read it now whit the show and stuff. I'm glad I got into it

1) Could you do a spoiler version of this video to go into your concerns with the three-part AOL trilogy in greater detail for those of us who are caught up on the story? Just put a big disclaimer at the front and you'll be fine.
2) No doubt Radar Pictures is rushing to do this because they are about to lose the movie rights to this IP if they don't make something and put it in theaters by then.

That's a good guess and probably right. An alternative is that they just want to piggyback off of the shows recent hype.
Red Eagle really can't be trusted and I hope Amazon just ignores it all as they haven't even started writing a script as far as I can tell. Add in the fact that it's not adapting Jordan's writing and it's really not that appealing to me.
There are also a Battlestar Galactica show and movie in the works, handled by different producers.
Time to Speculate on Titles, Movie #1 "Age of Legends", Movie #2 "War the Shadow" or "Betrayer of Hope", Movie #3 "Breaking of the World or Death of the Dragon".
The movies will either never come out or be terrible when they do. Most of these projects go that way
This is very early in production so I am not worried, there is a high chance this might not get off the ground let alone start filming. And even if it did, the Amazon show would be the main series and they could easily disregard the movies if they didn’t fit with canon.
If it's a case of trying to get money from Amazon it could backfire not just for them but for us as well, what if Amazon refuses to give them money and then just as an extra decides to kill the show and bury it.
If they make the shows before the movies, it will be tragic.
