I really appreciate that you made this video about one of my favourite fashion accessories. I own approximately 6 different waistcoats (we dont call them vests here in the UK :) I have had them all made for me bespoke by a local tailor. They fit like a glove, not too tight not too baggy and the shoulders are slim and paired with the right shirt, can be worn either dressed up or dressed down. I wear them with chino’s I wear them with jeans. I enjoy wearing them with a tie, or with the collar unbuttoned. They are in several different materials, silk, cotton, mohair, moleskin. They add texture and elevate my look above my peers when we are out but i am equally comfortable to wear when out on my own. I get so many compliments about them.
I get more compliments when I just wear a vest then when I wear a jacket and vest, or just a jacket. It’s my favorite look and for me it’s way more comfortable then adding my jacket.
4:23 It is in fact, okay to button your bottom button of your waist coat. Unlike a suit jacket it is not considered a fashion faux pas to button the bottom button of a waist coat, though you can opt to leave it unbuttoned (as most people do).
Yes you can, people just dont really do it because it kinda seems "wrong" even tho its not, in my opinion its one of those "just because you can doesnt mean you should" type of thing. But again each to its own
Now it's wintertime here in Belgium and when going out I'm wearing a vest (waistcoat) under my wintercoat... When entering somewhere I can simply take off that coat and SHINE !!! ...'cause a Vest brings Sunshine all around 🎉🎉❤😂!!!!
I always wear a vest when I need to wear a suit. Black herringbone in winter, grey birdseye tweed in spring, and paisley style brocade with a red or teal velvet tuxedo for more formal events
A good rule i found that helps is Light, dark, light. Or dark, light, dark. Like a dark blue vest, a light blue shirt, dark brown belt. Light tan slacks and dark black/blue shoes. Now I don't mean by light, as near white. But noticeably lighter compared to the darks.
John, please solve a mystery for me. I love vests, and I'm quite aware one shouldn't button the bottom button on a vest or a suit coat, but I wonder why that is. Frankly, to me the unbuttoned bottom button look whispers I forgot to finish getting dressed, so if I'm not supposed to button it, why do designers/sewers put one there at all? Thanks for your thoughts.
I disagree with this rule. I wear a lot of vests. Love them. I unbutton the bottom button when I sit down as it prevents the fabric from getting a fold in it. But when I’m standing and walking about I button it because it looks neater especially if you’re wearing it with or part of a three piece suit.
Closing your top / neck button looks realy good , you get a neat collar . I wear only genuine leather in brown or cognac collor , works great with light collored shirts !
John I always wear a vest with a suit, most of the time when I'm out and about, u notice a lot of guys don't use a vest, and also I'll occasionally wear a vest causally. Thanks for another great video 👍
Thanks for that interesting and informative talk about waistcoats. Please keep your great videos coming. Did you know why men must never fasten the bottom button of a waistcoat/vest? Later in his life Queen Victoria's eldest son, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward the Seventh, aka "Bertie", put on a lot of weight from his 12 course dinners etc, and had trouble buttoning-up his waistcoats, so left the botton undone. As a result the men of the court would do the same out of respect to him, and it became a fashion statement for men of all classes which holds true more than 100 years later. When he was young the Prince/King's waist was 28 inches and eventually he was 48 inches! No gyms in those days, huh? Even getting on a horse was a struggle for him. The best the King could manage was a gentle round of golf or shooting a few birds!
@@40OverFashion I'm a storehouse of trivia. Waistcoats were originally worn in the late 1600s and were sleeveless full-length coats worn under men's outer jackets. They'd be heavy and elaborate back then.
Thank you for the video John. Good tips on how to wear them. I have a few in my wardrobe, have been wearing them for quite a few years. They look great with a dress suit or if you want to do one causal. There's many great choices with them. I look for one that has a slight unique style that stands out. Have an awesome day and week ahead.
HI John Great vid . I tend to wear waistcoats in conjunction with sports jackets and denims or chinos . So, quite what we call smart casual in the UK . The most versatile colours I would recommend is camel/beige brown and a maroon . These 2 waistcoats tend to go with most of my jackets
I luv vests and their stylish nature. Have a few as I own a few suits, but i've never rocked any of them on their own as i just hadn't gotten the style down previously to do so. But i'm working on it and this video was helpful about the recommended light shirt color or while. Was glad to have watched this video.
I wear vests somewhat regularly. I'd advise caution with a white shirt/vest. Unless you've stepped up the style on the vest, it's easy to look like a black jack dealer or a waiter.
I find that if the inside shirt collar has some detail, like Burberry for example, the white is not as stark and nobody will ask you for an order of flaming cheese.
Thank you John. I have been wanting to incorporate a vest as an alternative to a jacket. I am not a huge fan of the strap in the back, but can only find vests with the strap.
Really Helpful Video as I was trying to learn about the different waist coats! Where do you get yours from? I really like the double and single breasted with lapel vest.
Hey loved the video 1)can the vest be of one fabric only like same front and back? 2)could you suggest a colour that would go well with a navy blue suit and work has a odd vest, even go well with black chinos Great content cheers!
for 1) in my opinion wearing a vest with the same front and back pattern is prefferable because it stands on it's own better. When the front and back don't match (example: a silk back and cotton front) it seems like there is a jacket that goes along with it.
Hey John, I notice that in all examples you never button the bottom button...I know this is a rule when buttoning a jacket, but is this also the rule for vests?
You can button the bottom button, but its not historically correct, but again, you can its not a fashion crime or something, people just dont really do it
Hi John, is it fine to wear a short sleeved shirt (smart shirt - not a t shirt) under a waitcoat? if not then why not? i want to do it but i dont see anyone doing it.
Ok thanks for the video. I'm working security at my pastor anniversary Saturday. I purchased a black velvet vest. I want to know if it's OK to wear a black shirt under it.
Where is the best place to purchase Vest/Waist Coats? I don't see that many around. Any online stores you could suggest? I understand how difficult to buy online but I'm ok sending back. Usually, I don't have challenges with purchasing online. :)
Interesting aray of vests John, So I gather with your rule of thumb you wouldnt wear a light grey vest over a dark blue shirt or beige vest over a chocolate brown shirt?
Great video 🙏 thank you. I was curious I rarely see printed/pattern button down shirts underneath vest. I’m taking it isn’t ideal? The right thing to do with suit vest would be to keep the shirt a solid color?
Nice video John, I never really thought about vests, I don't own any. After this video, I may reconsider. Wondering where I'd wear this. Also what are the brand of pants and shirt you are wearing? Looking forward to your next video!
I’m not sure how I feel about vests. I may have to rewatch this video a few times. I have a friend who wears them from time to time and they look good on him. See you soon.
Great job! I learned a lot about vests. When I see black shirt, white tie (and vest) I don't think 17-year-old, I think old gangster movies, such as Prohibition Era. I have no idea why, but for years I did not like vests at all, but I started to like them for layering and some weather. However, one thing annoys me greatly. I know and agree with the history and tradition of not buttoning the bottom button. But that was when vests were cut as your double-breasted vest was, with a straight bottom. The abomination of sloping the sides and front of a vest and adding forked triangles to create the appearance intended by not buttoning the bottom button makes the whole thing, in my opinion, a travesty. If I must wear such horrible design, I will button the bottom button, which I happen to think looks best under the circumstances, and tell anyone who comments what I've written here. I do search for properly cut vests.
Keep in mind that you can wear things the way you want. So long as you are aware of the rule, then it’s fine for you to break the rule since you have the objective of being symmetrical. Fashion rules really are guidelines, primarily for beginners. As you gain experience, you learn what works for you, what you like, and the look you are trying to go for. We all mess up, and keep learning. (The other day I wore a bright pink tie with some more muted colors. I was going for a pop of color in an otherwise rather boring outfit, and I thought it came off as too distracting) maybe someone else would have pulled that off, but I know I didn’t for me. There are ways to even have a darker shirt then tie/vest. Dark shirts exist because they can be pulled off. Don’t ask me how, I wore a pink tie!
thanks so much, john. this was really helpful as I have two different vest styles, myself. my one question: should a vest only be worn with a collard shirt or could a nice long sleeve t-shirt work also? I would love your opinion. thanks again
I have a question do you think after a certain age jeans stop working for you and don’t look appropriate? What’s more important fit that compliments your frame or going for a contemporary fit for the sake of style in style ?
Hi John . Once I get the cinch strap adjusted to where I need it on my vests I take a needle and thread and tack it down so I don't have that drooping tail hanging . Is it appropriate to wear a vest open ? Peace . :)
On unbuttoning the bottom button of a vest... it’s never been mandatory for one to do so. It started with King Edward VII. He got to fat for his suits, and was simply unable to button the bottom button. Naturally, imitation is the sincerest for of flattery. So folks at court began doing the same thing. Soon spread throughout the western world. These days, some vests are fitted and made to leave the bottom button undone. Most you might find off the rack fit better if done up all the way.
This is my view people may not agree we should never mix formals and casuals together we should always wear a waistcoat with a trouser never with a jean
4:23! I will button bottom button. I don't want to follow rules by a dead dictator named Edward VII. King Edward VII was a dictator like today's Kim John Un, and we should strive towards forgetting about Edward VII. Edward VII was a selfish.

American western style works with patterns and can host darker shirts. Solid content.
Get a better vest that has the same material on the back instead of the satin
I always wear a vest when I need to wear a suit. Black herringbone in winter, grey birdseye tweed in spring, and paisley style brocade with a red or teal velvet tuxedo for more formal events
I'm 20 and I just bought my first two vests, your video helps a lot ! Thank you so much!
John as always you're my number 1 fashionist. Thanks alot for the impressive video.
Thank you very much!
Classic man! Keep doing what you're doing, dude. Loving the videos.
Appreciate it!
I had a question about whether it's appropriate to wear a vest without a suit coat and you've answered it with this video, thank you.

It goes back to King Henry where he got too fat to button his jacket completely so everyone else, to remain respectful, started doing the same thing.
I disagree with this rule. I wear a lot of vests. Love them. I unbutton the bottom button when I sit down as it prevents the fabric from getting a fold in it. what shoes are you wearing? they look sweet
Thank you John. I have been wanting to incorporate a vest as an alternative to a jacket. I am not a huge fan of the strap in the back, but can only find vests with the strap.

I think the back strap is crucial to make it look good

Thank you.Could you please include subtitles.Cheers.🇷🇺
I have a number of “summer” sweater vests that I wear to dress up a t-shirt or casual short sleeved shirt. Any fashion faux pas with that thinking?
It's not conventional, but if it 'suits' your style and you're happy, go with it.
Sounds okay to me.
I want to wear a vest with jeans, but don't know what kind of vest, fabric, etc. I'm 60 years old if that helps any...haha

No belts with waistcoats.
If you wear it with jeans then you can’t beat also wearing a newsboy cap.
That won't work for me, but it is a good look
Never wear a waistcoat and a belt
With the exception of a sweater vest, I would only wear one if it was part of business suit.
Thank you for commenting!
This is my view people may not agree we should never mix formals and casuals together we should always wear a waistcoat with a trouser never with a jean
*Never wear a belt with a vest. Use side tab trousers or braces/suspenders.
ridiculous advice 🙄
I just happend to have brought a vest Friday, coincidence? Hmmmm.......
Haha! Awesome!
Great video as always. Waste coat single breasted only and with 4 buttons only way to go in my view.
