  • Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger once said, "If you control oil, you control nations; if you control food, you control people; if you control currency, you control the world." Oil, food, and currency are the weapons the United States uses to balance the world. Food is not only a basic need for survival but also a key to national security and economic stability. Over the past few decades, a silent war has unfolded in the global grain market, with the United States as one of the leading players. Using food as a weapon, the US has not only controlled the global food supply chain but also used it as a political tool to influence world affairs. However, in this seemingly disadvantaged war, China has gradually taken control of its own food destiny through foresight, technological innovation, and steadfast determination, demonstrating the resolve and wisdom of the Chinese people in defending food security.
Is this true? Dear viewers! Welcome back to our channel! I'm glad to engage with you again and discuss today's topics: 1. What successful strategies has China employed in grain production between traditional agrarian civilization and modern technological innovation? 2. How have countries like the United States used food as a political tool to challenge China's food security? 3. How has China Grain Reserves Corporation played a significant role in the grain war?
In 1942, an article titled "Who Uses Food as a Weapon" shook the world like thunder, marking the beginning of modern food warfare led by the United States. In those turbulent times, food became not just a substance nourishing life but also a tool for power play among nations. From 1965 to 1971, India, this ancient land, experienced the most severe famine since independence. At this critical moment, the United States imposed three restrictions on grain exports to India, dealing a heavy blow to the Indian people and forcing India to politically support US military actions in Vietnam. By the Reagan era in the 1980s, US political strategy became more explicit, viewing food supply as a political weapon that must be controlled. This explicit strategy meant that food was no longer just a substance nourishing life but also a deadly weapon to eliminate hostile countries. From 1989 to 1990, the world experienced a global food shortage, which was already a global disaster. However, the United States took advantage of the situation to manipulate the world grain market, leading to soaring food prices. This was a devastating blow to the food-deficient Soviet Union, exacerbating its internal food crisis and ultimately accelerating the disintegration of this superpower.
From 1996 to 2001, the United States cleverly used soybean patents to firmly control Argentina's grain supply. The behind-the-scenes pusher of this strategy was the globally renowned "Big Four" grain traders, among which the US-based ADM and France's Louis Dreyfus were particularly crucial. In 1994, China and the United States signed an agricultural cooperation agreement, which imposed tariff quotas on Chinese imports of soybeans and other major grains.

Food is just like any other commodity traded. It can be used as a weapon like cars as the US has done.
