I don’t know what anyone else thinks but the recent remake - I couldn’t watch it...the characters were so watered down and so far away from the intensity of the John Carpenter remake it just wasn’t worth it for me...
Lol. He's clearly older. This is 36 years after the movie. But if he shaved bald like when he was in the movie, he'd probably look younger because that gray hair clearly ages his look. Great actor though
Dabunny Rabbit Not only that, Childs also had a pierced ear and a gold tooth. So unless the Thing had learned from its mistakes from the prequel I would assume at least Childs was human. It wouldn't make sense to make McReady the thing either as he destroyed the big one and set the base on fire.
That's why The Thing is my #1 horror movie, the best thing it could have happened after all these years is that Carpenter forgot who was intended to be the alien so the mystery will always remain...until some bullshit director decides to do a sequel with Childs possibly being the Thing.
This man has also a great underrated career. He has an hilarious role in There is something about Mary, he has a nice role in Pitch black, a very creepy role in Requiem for a dream, one of the best fights of all time in They live, a nice military roles in Armageddon and Platoon, a great sidekick role in marked for death, a fine performance in clockers. Great actor
Yep, and a really good actor. He also has one of the best voices going, right up there with the likes of James Earl Jones or Orson Welles. Whenever you see a commercial for the navy, that's his voice you're hearing for the voiceover.
Definitely his best. As much as I love Halloween, The Thing is miles ahead of it. Definitely different types of stories and horror, but they both share a tension that slowly builds throughput the movie until the levee breaks in the third act and they both leave you with an ending sequence that leaves with questions instead of answers. The Thing utilized it's tension ro perfection. Both films perfectly cast as well.
We have James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman, two black men well known for their amazing voice for voice overs, but I think Keith David's voice is one of the best, and very underrated. Loved him in The Thing and They Live, and I also like his voice over work for the Beef series, as well as various things over the years for WWE.
What made The Thing so great was the exceptionally talented cast. Keith David is such a great and believable actor. He really sells it which is what makes this movie such an incredible classic and so nightmarishly horrorfying is that these actors make it believably real! Their reactions are perfect. It's stood the test of time. I've watched this movie at least 20 times and it's just as scary the last time as it was on the first. Wish I could see it in a theater again!
It's more than that though the cast is incredibly talented. John's direction, John & Alan Howarath piecing Ennio Moricone's score in synth, the special effects makeup and prop dept aka Rob Bottin, the constructed US Outpost 31 camp, the setting all of it plays a huge role.
I loved the way the ending made me feel, it was amazing. All that paranoia from the movie, all that wondering who was who until we only have Mac left, and just when you think it's over Childs shows up to give you that sense of paranoia one last time. Maybe nobody is the thing, and John just wrote the movie in such a brilliant way that you, the viewer, end up being just as paranoid as the crew once was and refuse to believe that the 2 guys can have a semi happy ending sharing a drink knowing that they gave up their lives to save the world, because you're allowing the paranoia to consume you just as the crew had.
It's also a running metaphor, at the start MacReady pours whiskey into the chess wizard saying "cheating bitch" because it checkmated him, seems he's in a checkmated position to us, but to MacReady, giving the "whisky" to Charles was akin to pouring in the computer and destroying it, hence his chuckle: in one of the scripts, it describes how mac has a flamethrower resting under his blanket/poncho, ready to torch child's, he could also be chuckling because of Child's lack of worry about sharing the drink: Fuchs even says early on "even a small amount of this organism could infect anyone of us, is suggest we prepare our own meals and eat eat out of tins" by this point it's already weeks since first infection so everyone would be used to that fact
He was perfect for the role, I loved his attitude. The Thing was a masterpiece and he was a big part of that. We still don't know for sure if he was a thing at the end. I suspect he was because he changed his coat and he drank the "whisky" without even thinking about it which was a bit curious. I think it was a brilliant ending, it left us without all the answers and were still discussing it to this day. One of my favorite movies ever.
It surely is a good sign that a movie is still talked about and discussed after almost 40 years after it was released. John Carpenter did an awesome job with The Thing and left a lot in the air as to what happened in the movie and the ambiguity of the ending.
I don't understand how Keith David does not have mega-stardom, this guy is the epitome of bass-ass and cool! Just the voice alone would have made him a mega-voice star!!
Actually confirmed as Carpenter settled on the Game being the "Canon" sequel. Keith David's character freezes to death and Mac barely survives by stealing a helicopter from the black ops team sent to retrieve the The Thing.
Happy Birthday Keith David. U were amazing legend. I love Halo 2, 3, The Master Chief Collection, 5 Guardians, Teen Titans, Robot Chicken, American Dad, Free Birds, The Princess And The Frog, Volcano, The Thing, Mass Effect 1, 2, 3, Legendary Edition, and Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Halo is my favorite game. The music I listen, reminds me of the Church. May the Peace be with u Arbiter, Admiral David Anderson, Sergeant Foley, Lieutenant Fox, Childs and Chief Broadbeak. I like how he talks about the thing as if the events keep on going after the movie ends, i dont like it when actors say that theres nothing after the movie ends
Same, if there`s one thing i hate it`s an unfinished story. @@grizzlymelon8376 I know for a fact that writers almost always have their own head-canon and I am certain John Carpenter does as well, but he's also smart enough to never share it with anymore. i have watched the thing probably close to 30 or 40 times and i have NEVER noticed that you couldn't see childs' breath in the air compared to macready. i honestly always thought they were both still human and the fact that one of them could be the thing was just kind of a cool little way to end the film.

Keith David was great in The Thing as well as the rest of the cast. I always thought it would have been great to have a movie starring Keith David and David Keith.
What an awesome actor with an incredible voice. Loved everything he's done especially The Thing, They Live, Platoon, The Job and Men At Work. Keith David is awesome, hands down, and the Animated Spawn series on HBO, is still one of his top performances for me. The Thing and They Live are right up there because of his charisma and sheer relatability. You ROCK Keith David. :)
Keith David has been in so many of my favourite films but the one that sticks out is his scene with Ben Stiller and the zipper in there's something about Mary. He makes that scene even funnier with his timing and delivery. Such a pro
I saw on Wikipedia, that David, played a doorman in "Disco Godfather" (HA!) prior to "The Thing',. I'm not surprised he didn't mention that one. Brilliant actor, and for an early perfomance in The Thing, it seemed he was a seasoned pro He was great in it.
I wish he would’ve touched on the different color jacket from when he’s last seen guarding the door. That and the fact that the power went out almost immediately after he “goes after” Blair are the most compelling pieces of evidence that suggest Childs’ is indeed The Thing.
its the same jacket when hes sitting at the end talking with mcready its the same jacket he had on before he went after blair, but lots of snow accumulated look closley
The casting in it was great period. Nice to see this helped put him on the map. He's pretty much great in everything he's in (though he was criminally underutilized in Roadhouse). Versatile as well.
One of my favorite actors. I’d love to see a badass action or crime film (maybe even an action horror) with him and Tony Todd as the two leads. As for a sequel to The Thing, it would be too late to do this now, but I would’ve loved to see a sequel that followed at least most of what went on in the first two Thing comic books from Dark Horse. In those, neither Child’s nor MacReady are the thing, but members of a rescue team they encounter become infected as a result of contact with the remains of one of the creatures that wasn’t fully destroyed in the explosion at the end of the movie. I don’t know where the story went after those first two volumes, and I’d be fine with some altering of the story, but I remember reading that later volumes of the comic series resulted in the creature making it to South America and posing a much larger threat because of the warmer weather and populated areas.
iconic. Keith David can definitely be considered an iconic actor. his variosu roles, his great personality, and the depth to which he's played his various characters is just downright amazing. i'm a fan. i just saw nope yesterday. i was a little let down by it, but it was still worth the watch.
It's always funny to me that my first introduction to Keith David was Gargoyles, and it wasn't until later that I saw his earlier film work, and the two John Carpenter films he's been in are two of my favorite old movies now.
I think the thing people have to keep in mind when debating this is that the ending was ambiguous on purpose. Any clue to who, both or neither simply wasn't intended by the filmmaker. There are no clues...because there is no answer. Period.
The whole movie gives you clues who could be a thing or not. The clues you have to look for are the changes in personality... it’s what the thing can’t imitate. Child’s at the end wasn’t the same as child’s in the beginning.
Of course, but because of the Dunning-Kruger effect, there will always be idiots trying to apply their post mortem theories in any way they can. The open door scene with the snow pouring in where Childs left the compound (and the open door behind that one), as well as his sleepiness on the same position a few scenes before, now that's a deliberate clue. Especially since giving you clues is the only purpose of that scene. Changes in personality and acting out of character is the real clue as well. Everything else may or may not be deliberate, and may be your imagination looking for clues that are not there. The story is told well. The ending is perfect and there are enough real clues not to go searching for the invented ones. What's wrong with all these people?
@@Luka_menorykee John Carpenter, Kurt Russel and other people connected to the film have said that all the actors thought that they were 'the Thing'. And that though there were clues during the movie (like the eye gleam) they went to particular lengths to make sure that there were no 'clues' in the end. Originally Carpenter wanted the ending to be completely ambiguous, and any clues in the end were either accidental or fans letting their imaginations get away from them...the latter being the point. Also, I don't think Dunning-Kruger is at work here as much as apophenia.
They live is also one of my favorites. Really good character actor. Strong screen presence but provided tons for the other actors to work with. Liked his work
According to the prequel, when you're assimilated you lose your fillings and jewelry, everything metal. Childs still has in his earring in the final scene so he wasn't assimilated, and obviously neither was MacReady. Until somebody decides to do a sequel, they killed the alien and then while their end is left ambiguous they likely froze to death.
The point is that the thing is intelligent enough to replace the materials after it copies its victims, the thing put clothes back on and it even put back on earring as we can see in the Prequel movie.
Can't believe that was his first film. A fantastic performance.
I thought it was “Platoon”.
K August Platoon was made in 1986
I had no idea. He is official and a master of his craft.
He was only 26 when it was made. He had an alpha male wise beyond his years quality to him. Now it's just the right amount of years lol.

its the same jacket when hes sitting at the end talking with mcready its the same jacket he had on before he went after blair, but lots of snow accumulated look closley
He has such a great voice. So much he could do with those pipes.
Admiral Anderson
Brother has one of the greatest voices God ever created
The casting in it was great period. Nice to see this helped put him on the map. He's pretty much great in everything he's in (though he was criminally underutilized in Roadhouse). Versatile as well.
Keith David has always been one of my favorite actors, and its good to still see him.
Keith David is a one-of-a-kind actor. Even in a subpar film, I find him fascinating. The Thing is one of best in my opinion.
Living Legend! The Greatest Man Alive!
iconic. Keith David can definitely be considered an iconic actor. his variosu roles, his great personality, and the depth to which he's played his various characters is just downright amazing. i'm a fan. i just saw nope yesterday. i was a little let down by it, but it was still worth the watch.
He is good in "They Live" too
It's always funny to me that my first introduction to Keith David was Gargoyles, and it wasn't until later that I saw his earlier film work, and the two John Carpenter films he's been in are two of my favorite old movies now.
I think the thing people have to keep in mind when debating this is that the ending was ambiguous on purpose. Any clue to who, both or neither simply wasn't intended by the filmmaker. There are no clues...because there is no answer. Period.
I do think Carpenter mentioned one of them was indeed The Thing, did he not? I thought I read that somewhere.
The whole movie gives you clues who could be a thing or not. The clues you have to look for are the changes in personality... it’s what the thing can’t imitate. Child’s at the end wasn’t the same as child’s in the beginning.
Actually, light reflected in the eye is a clue...
This guy had such an impact on us as teens. One of the best endings in movie history 👍🏼
That laugh at the end was so perfect. What a great creepy laugh that dude has.
what a wholesome guy
He and Kurt Russell were absolutely phenomenal in the movie. It's still my absolute favorite movie apart from alien/s
Keith Davis is a fantastic character actor and one of my favorites.
I'm shocked this was his first film roll he did a fantastic job.
Great interview.
Keith David still looks good for his age. All he has to do is Dye his hair and boom, ready for another Thing Sequel (3).
Thank you so much for sharing with us 👍👍👍👍
Keith David, Morgan Freeman, and James Earl Jones. Top 3 dudes that I will listen to all night long to soothe my soul.
CaptToilet I agree with Keith and James, but I'd sub Morgan for Dennis Haysbert.
What a brilliant filme never has a movie made me think so much
Where were you childs
"Thought I saw Blair, went out after him, got lost in the storm..."
^^^^ that’s how I know child’s is the thing, the real child’s would have never went after Blair alone in the middle of a snow storm.
I was in electrical
@@kevinrodriguez9701 and they see child's run outside and seconds later the generator is blown out.
Keith David is a great actor! His movies are so entertaining.
Why do I get the feeling that Keith transformed and assimilated everyone in that room right after this cuts
That voice A+
I'm sorry, but everytime I see him I think of Lewis in Men at Work lol.
lol i'm surprised anybody remembers that movie. it was awesome.
Don't ever touch another man's fries!
Would you look at that? Someone threw away a perfectly good white boy.
I don’t know boys...but they look pretty goddamn sweet to me!
They live is also one of my favorites. Really good character actor. Strong screen presence but provided tons for the other actors to work with. Liked his work
Childs says 'you're the only one that made it?' not 'are we the only ones....' Childs has to be the thing.
Great actors and film.
Leonardo Gonçalves how do you replace a filling? Just pop it off and on?
@@leodefine86 In the prequel, the Carter-Thing didn't put it back in, that's how Kate outed him.
The prequel literally has no bearing on the original though. >__>
@@planescaped HUH?!? The prequel literally has all bearing on the original. How did that thought even formulate in your head?
