A tell-tale version of The Thing would be amazing, cause ur choices could affect if people accidentally get infected. Or if they were crazy ambitious you could end up getting infected and your motive flips entirely.
Looking back at this game, The Thing Video Game came out at the wrong time and was kinda ambitious even if the ambition kinda failed. I still liked this game but I can admit it's not the best way to follow up on the movie.
Aliens did to Alien what this game does for The Thing; it turns it into a battle against numerous instances of the monster of the previous story. Wether this is good or bad is up to you.
I've never clicked on a notification so quickly. I love The Thing, and while I think it definitely should stand on its own, I'd love to see a truly excellent sequel. Excellent video!
That’s means a lot, man! I’m totally with you on keeping the ambiguous ending for The Thing. It was fun to see these what people did to follow it up though.
We know there are 3 bases in the surroundings. The american, the Norwegian and a Russian naval outpost wich has a warship and a submarine,. There is also a Japanese ship that fishes in the pceans
There should be some sort of thing resident evil/telltale game made nowadays. The concept of at least some characters having the ability to become assimilated or saved. Besides, some of the new monster forms would look amazing with current graphics. I need this now.
The thing is a masterful creation of an alien. I can see it’s inspiration in Dead Space and the Flood from halo. I wish we could get another movie in the franchise but I feel like it would be treading the same ground as the prequel and the 82 film.
I loved this game. I thought it was super fun, and had me on edge the whole time. I loved the expansion on the story, and thought a video game handled it pretty damn well, especially for the year it came out.
Was so excited to play this on the PC when it first got released. Glad there are people out there who have a similar, high appreciation for Carpenter's The Thing as I do. 4 marks for this videos ending. Well played.
Thanks man! I remember getting the collectors edition of this game. It came with a copy of the movie and a statue of the Thing that comes out of that one dude’s stomach!
Thanks, Matty! I dig this game. I’d love to see another The Thing game with modern game mechanics. It’s such an awesome concept with so much potential for a phenomenal game.
Evolva was great btw. I played it in high school and I had a blast with it, sure not something special as story or anything, but that evolution idea was good at the time.
This game needs an updated remake used to love this back in the day im also sure a more dynamic infection process could be achieved nowadays and a decent work around for the technician dieing and screwing up progression issue could easily get past and rework the "weaponize the alien and use it to super soldier myself" arc aswell XD something simple like a usa quarantine studying and evaluating the threat/researching a immunisation in case it does reach mainland but it escapes coz well it is the thing after all, still a better story than evil guy tries to use it to seize power
I would love a modern The Thing game. I think a asymmetrical multiplayer game would be cool. One player is assigned to be the thing and has to assimilate as many humans as it can. Human players try to figure out who’s the thing and try to burn it down.
Yeah, and the multiplayer could have a mafia-esque game mode where one player is the thing and it's up to the group to figure out which one it is and kill it/trap it/escape. And you can customize what your thing form could be, with all kinds of shapes, sizes, weapons, and approach options.
"Government suit" Given how most politicians act nowdays, I can't say it's not impossible some idiot in power can think hey csn control something impossible.

They could have Mac come out of a comma and he finds out child's is in the phyic ward because they think he's crazy while the 1s who found them accidently brought the thing back with them so Mac has to find child's then they hunt it down
Interesting tibit: In a trailer from the OXM (official Xbox magazine) has a trailer advertising the game but there's a lot of differences that didn't make it in the game. Case in point, MacReady was the one who actually died of hypothermia instead of Childs. Makes me wonder if the game had a different story before release
Wow, thanks a lot for these videos! After this and reminding me of the movie, I'll get the game and just enjoy the shit out of it! Thank you for mentioning the comic books as well! Haven't known they exist. I'll read the first one just to get through to the good second one... aaand I'll forget the third one exists at all.
Good video!! I remember buying/playing this game when it first came out - was so excited!! never finished the game for got stuck at a certain point and could never figure out what to do - forget where in game and/or circumstances. Think the part that got me POed about this game was that no matter how many times you tried to take care of your team mates: i.e. - give them shots, weapons, whatever, THEY ALWAYS TURNED!!!!!!! Came to the point that I would keep all the stuff for myself and use the team mates to accomplish whatever mission, then would quickly kill them off. Saw no sense wasting valuable resources since they were to turn anyways.
Hey, did anybody notice that the blood seen on the wall at 2:50 looks like a Rorschach test ? Personnally, I vote for a shepherd dog's head split in two.
I love that the movie, the prequel, and the sequel all have the exact same title. Good luck figuring it out, fans in the future. Really though I remember this being a solid game. The trust mechanic really had me wondering more than a few times. I was lucky enough to not have the illusion of a dynamic system ruined during my rental. I remember the box claiming that it was indeed dynamic. The only way to avoid having the main character be immune would be to have a cure mechanic that you have to implement when you're getting infected. He has to stay clean because you have to play as him. It's really asking too much to avoid that cliche.
As far as I'm concerned the 1982 shouldn't have a direct sequel. Even with a slightly ambiguous ending, that Thing encounter seems pretty resolved... but there could be some other Things out in the universe who come into contact with Earth :O
Or you know a search and rescue team who arrive to see why loss of contact has persisted so long and find the all the corpses. Maybe a warning. Just no evidence of Childs or McCready only the fact that they aren't there, which a log of personnel would at least show they're supposed to be. Have an outbreak on a ship during transport perhaps.
I love this game but yea that its scripted when people will turn into the thing felt very disappointing. I used one of those blood tests on a guy right before hes supposed to turn into a thing and nothing happened. The people that eventually turn into things also dont act any different at all from the humans.
I remember picking this up at Blockbuster back in the days on the original Xbox. I was terrified when my teammate turned, panicking and trying to burn em with little ammo was such a rush. If they remake this or something I'd definitely play it again
I played through that game, and it was really good. Actually, I remember loving it. I was surprised at how it was REALLY like a SEQUEL. I couldn't believe how good it was.
@@DiegoReviews i mean having a sequel in general just ruins the whole point of the ending of the original its like if they made a sequel to total recall
-Watch my playlists- I totally see where people are coming from with that point of view. That was totally Carpenters intention. A prequel was probably the best way to go about having another Thing movie. Mediocre as it was.
This is a game that could absolutely benefit in a remake by taking a few pointers from, 'Alien: Isolation'. As a matter of fact, in theme, the games are very similar. Any remake would absolutely have to have a dynamic, 'Who is the thing?' system and turn it more from a shooter, to a survival game (Primarily to avoid the fear of the monster becoming diminished.)
Well, the game isn't really a "sequel". And neither are the comics, though I Loved them. And John Carpenter has explicitely said on his own twitter that one of the survivors is indeed The Thing. This contradicts both the video game and the comics. Also, if you have heard the comments of the movie makers of what "hints" they put in, read the script, and remember MacReady's game vs CPU, you'll pretty much know who The Thing is in the end.
@@sneakysneakyraccoon8538 i dont think that it is true, because if you really really follow the final steps of the movie youll see that there really is no other way. Childs is The Thing. I have read on an article, from Screen Rant I think, that Carpenter really didnt know how people missed that Childs wasnt breathing at end of the movie.
@@randyramirez4408 Not as much as MacReady's. You gotta understand that despite the movie is a masterpiece, it is still quite on budget and on tech that was available at time and at that kind of weather. So despite your sincerest efforts and deadlines you gotta keep, you can't make it work 100%. You can however follow the clues the movie makers told you to follow, which was what they could do at best at that time. Childs has different clothing than he had while standing guard as well. He was neither as tired, nor "frostbitten" as MacReady. That he trusted MacReady, especially drinking from same bottle given the situation and threat they've been in is absolute nonsense. No sane HUMAN being would do such a thing. If you listen to the music score itself, the theme of The Thing, it sounds as a human heartbeat... but doesn't quite get it right. Same is with Childs. Things simply don't add up. The Thing doesn't know how to smile, how to laugh... those are human emotions. It itself is a deceptive predator. it is an infiltrator. It is there to gain your trust and assimilate you, and it uses methods for you to invite it to do so. I'll stop replying to these The Thing topics, and it was probably a mistake to start discussing to begin with.
Brooo, i loved your take on it. I didn’t have a good enough PC back in the day when this came out and now i want to play it but dread the aged experience and like you’ve said - government conspiracy just doesn’t chime with me in regards to The Thing.
None of these 2 part videos mentions the BEST sequel to the movie that was sadly never picked up... the tv show called "Return of the Thing". The script can be found online, and it is EXTREMELY faithful to everything that was established in John Carpenter's movie. Worth reading!
I liked the video game it was ok it wasn't perfect but still good and given that John carpenter said it was the sequel I believe this is where the story concluded .... Unless the thing did morph into separate beings as a survival evolution and that Japanese movie Parasite is it's spiritual successor and it's future 😂 .
God, that game was so frustrating. I never finished it because I got sick of losing characters, even after I just did a blood test like 2 MINUTES before hand.
For me, sharpshooting that control box in the hangar before the door closed was always a pain in the neck. I also wished that not every character you help becomes a Thing. I did like some of the strategy involved in evading Things, like leaving one out in the cold, or running all around a warehouse area, blasting the Bulldog looking Thing with the flamethrower at random, sneaking past Mantis Ting. etc. But yeah...I'm playing The Thing, not Half-Life.
I remember that hangar part being annoying for me too. Some of the things are actually pretty clever and would try to flank me. Especially in areas with multiple hallways and entry points.
Imagine this game being made today? Would be epic because they could do so much more with the mechanics they wanted to implement into the game & the mythology of The Thing itself

It’s a shame the sequel was cancelled. It could’ve refined these cool elements
Diego Rivera I agree it’s a real shame they didn’t,I would’ve paid top dollar for it. Maybe an alien isolation type of game would’ve been spectacular
Greetings from the Future. Your wish has been granted and an HD remaster is coming for ps4 and ps5 in late 2024. :D
The thing was scared shit out of me when i was a kid.
I'm 21 years old and watch this again and it's scare shit out of me again.
"My cool OC Blake is... is immune to the thing virus, so he can't even get it, and is way more powerful than *your* characters, haha!"
The thing 2: this time it's personal
THING2 (plural)
The Return of the Thing or The Thing 2021
Dramatic titles 😅😂
The Thing 2: Electric Bugaloo.
The thing: assimilating the world
This masterpiece needs a serious sequel. One that is s good of the prequel.HELL even Kurt Russel needs at least another sequel for Escape from LA
A sequel for Big Trouble in Little China would have been fun!
The biggest problem with the game was a trust fear system. Since certain characters were scripted to be infected it made that system worthless. Other than that I enjoyed it. Would like to see a remaster with some fixes
I actually like the ending song and it fits the creature consider the song is about paranoia
Reminds me of Cold's "With My Mind' track from Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy. What a great game that deserved a sequel. Too bad Midway never made it happen, before they faded out.
Psi-Ops! That was a sick ass action game. I’ve always wanted a sequel to that game.
@@DiegoReviews - Had tight gameplay, memorable Soul Reaver-like boss fights, a well-written story & THAT SONG! One of my all-time favorite games. Glad you dig it, bro 👍.
Congrats on the excellent video. I really enjoyed it. I'm a huge fan of The Thing & John Carpenter, in general.
Telltale went out of biz 4 years ago.
@@MrRezRisingIt's back lol
@@romansionis2470 Just the name. Brand new ownership. Hopefully they won't blow it like the original owners did.
Telltale would f this up in my opinion, the crew behind Detroit become human would absolutely make a baller game imo
Aliens did to Alien what this game does for The Thing; it turns it into a battle against numerous instances of the monster of the previous story. Wether this is good or bad is up to you.
That’s a good analogy!
Let's put it this way: only a fool would think it a *good* thing...
I would love to see a company redesign and remake this game. It could be absolutely terrifying with modern technology.
@@DiegoReviews The ambi ending MADE the movie.
I don't think it would have the status it does today if not for that AWESOME ending!
You rock son! More collaborations are in order! Nice dissection of the game too...
Collaborations are the best. Thanks!
Shout out to my Jerma fans out there, he just played this a few weeks ago.
The thing would make a real scary multiplayer team based game on new consoles. Could even have a mode to play as the thing
these two videos are amazing and you really succeeded in capturing the aura of the movie in the framing device conversation
Thank you!
The thing is a masterful creation of an alien. I can see it’s inspiration in Dead Space and the Flood from halo. I wish we could get another movie in the franchise but I feel like it would be treading the same ground as the prequel and the 82 film.
I love the burning mechanic in this game where guns only slow them down.
I remember reading a interview with Carpenter stating that the game was the canon continuation, but that was like 15 years ago
You know there was a comic series that also reveals what happens after The Thing
Yep. Part one of this video covers them!
Resident Evil 2, 3, 4 REmake engine. That's what this needs along with a damn good writer and developers and art designers.
I loved this game. I thought it was super fun, and had me on edge the whole time. I loved the expansion on the story, and thought a video game handled it pretty damn well, especially for the year it came out.
Could you imagine a modern "The Thing" game using the Unreal 5.0 Engine?
Loved the video! I've always wanted to check out The Thing video game and this was a great breakdown of it.
Thanks, Matt! I’m happy to give you a good breakdown of it :)
Was so excited to play this on the PC when it first got released. Glad there are people out there who have a similar, high appreciation for Carpenter's The Thing as I do.
4 marks for this videos ending.
Well played.
Thank you so much!
Very cool breakdown of the game I remember buying it new at GameStop years ago.. it was one of my favorite games on the PlayStation 2.😎👍
Thanks man! I remember getting the collectors edition of this game. It came with a copy of the movie and a statue of the Thing that comes out of that one dude’s stomach!
I still have this game, and it works perfectly on the Xbox 360.
Loved the atmosphere and the creatures that you fought!
I really wish The Thing was remastered for current gen consoles! I miss playing that game🤞🙏
Wow...if this gets redone right, it would be EPIC!
This was perfect. I've intended to review this game myself. I'm following in your footsteps dude :)
Thanks, Matty! I dig this game. I’d love to see another The Thing game with modern game mechanics. It’s such an awesome concept with so much potential for a phenomenal game.
Best channel ever. Watched this vid two years ago.and just had to come back to watch again
A Telltale The Thing game would have been awesome.
Unfortunately telltale is now out of business :(
Patton Oswalt as the voice of the thing.
The until dawn team would do it pretty good I think
Oh yes, been there. Done that. got the frostbites... Good times.
Thx for this nostalgia trip into the "Thing'verse"
Evolva was great btw. I played it in high school and I had a blast with it, sure not something special as story or anything, but that evolution idea was good at the time.
I never heard of this game til I made this video. I’ll look into it!
I played this game. Real good. Great twist at the end.
Thank you for the video. Have a great day.
I feel that something like alien isolation with The Thing theme would be nice. Maybe online co-op as well?
Very thorough analysis and presentation.
Thank you!
This game needs an updated remake used to love this back in the day im also sure a more dynamic infection process could be achieved nowadays and a decent work around for the technician dieing and screwing up progression issue
could easily get past and rework the "weaponize the alien and use it to super soldier myself" arc aswell XD something simple like a usa quarantine studying and evaluating the threat/researching a immunisation in case it does reach mainland but it escapes coz well it is the thing after all, still a better story than evil guy tries to use it to seize power
I would love a modern The Thing game. I think a asymmetrical multiplayer game would be cool. One player is assigned to be the thing and has to assimilate as many humans as it can. Human players try to figure out who’s the thing and try to burn it down.
They kind of did if you think about the game called prototype
@@jonathancoster6576 kind of , is not good enought we demand a direct rehash with the weaponize the alien bit cut out XD
Fully agree, but dear God man, punctuation
@@victorfrankenstein4409 ZERO PUCTUATION Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw XD
I played "The Thing" when it first came out and absolutely loved it, fantastic atmosphere throughout the whole game.
Imagine if this was remastered with better everything and maybe a multiplayer mode
Yeah, and the multiplayer could have a mafia-esque game mode where one player is the thing and it's up to the group to figure out which one it is and kill it/trap it/escape. And you can customize what your thing form could be, with all kinds of shapes, sizes, weapons, and approach options.
That’s my dream The Thing game!
Surv-Hive is basically a multiplayer Thing game
Keith David voices the Arbiter from Halo.
Best casting choice I’ve ever see /heard
"Government suit" Given how most politicians act nowdays, I can't say it's not impossible some idiot in power can think hey csn control something impossible.
Hollow Earth cover-up is real. There are openings @ the poles. DS agents control the access. Look it up.
Watched a playthrough of this game decades ago someone did. Was really impressed with the gameplay. Glad to know so many The Thing fans out there making videos like this👍🏾
They could have Mac come out of a comma and he finds out child's is in the phyic ward because they think he's crazy while the 1s who found them accidently brought the thing back with them so Mac has to find child's then they hunt it down
Interesting tibit: In a trailer from the OXM (official Xbox magazine) has a trailer advertising the game but there's a lot of differences that didn't make it in the game.
I’m really glad to see you enjoyed the videos!
Thank you! Agreed with everything you said. I’d love another go at a game like this.
Hey, did anybody notice that the blood seen on the wall at 2:50 looks like a Rorschach test ?
Personnally, I vote for a shepherd dog's head split in two.
I remember my homie in middle school always talk about this game
The farthest I got on the game was the airport level, sadly. XD
I have this for 360. My kid and I like coming back to it and playing it once in a while.
I love this game but yea that its scripted when people will turn into the thing felt very disappointing.
I used one of those blood tests on a guy right before hes supposed to turn into a thing and nothing happened.
The people that eventually turn into things also dont act any different at all from the humans.
Would love another game that takes a crack at this system. Doesn’t even necessarily need to be The Thing.
they should make a Aliens: Isolation type game for The Thing, that'd be really cool
Dont take "this is a sequel" seriously because carpenter also said the comic sequel was canon too so im gonna go ahead and say neither are canon
Yeah I’m with you.
@@DiegoReviews i mean having a sequel in general just ruins the whole point of the ending of the original
its like if they made a sequel to total recall
-Watch my playlists- I totally see where people are coming from with that point of view. That was totally Carpenters intention. A prequel was probably the best way to go about having another Thing movie. Mediocre as it was.
They could both be seen as sequels, kinda like how some series have diverging sequels with different weird timeline shennagins.
@@usagentgaming3079 Personally I didnt like either the comics felt too inspired by 90s action movies more than the actual thing movie
*This game deserved a remaster. It would be nice to get a version for this generation's consoles.*
Oh damn. This makes me nostalgic of the SpoonyOne's review of this game.
I've heard that there's a video where John Carpenter said that they were both humans.
@@PsychoticLuke carpenter already said that the video game is canon, so that just makes his tweet a contradiction as well.
@@PsychoticLuke he was though look at the 4k version of the movies and you can see his breath.
You did a great job on this. Thank you!
Thank you!
John Carpenter ✋ Halloween 2
John Carpenter 👉 The Thing PS2
Brooo, i loved your take on it. I didn’t have a good enough PC back in the day when this came out and now i want to play it but dread the aged experience and like you’ve said - government conspiracy just doesn’t chime with me in regards to The Thing.
Have you seen the board game. I think it's called "Infection at Outpost 31".
Never heard of it! I’m gonna look it up.
This is the original among us! I really hope we get a 3rd movie The Thing. This is my favorite movie of all time.
And now......🎉
Yeeeaaaahhhhh buddyyyyy!
@@DiegoReviews I'm just waiting on, Starship Troopers Extermination now🤯
None of these 2 part videos mentions the BEST sequel to the movie that was sadly never picked up... the tv show called "Return of the Thing".
The script can be found online, and it is EXTREMELY faithful to everything that was established in John Carpenter's movie. Worth reading!
I believe Xavier brings that up on his video!
1:56 You mean *ant*arctic.
I have a hard time saying words at times lol
Great job on these 2 videos. It would be cool to get another video game with a real dynamic system.
I love the parasite manga!
@@DiegoReviews yeah man love that manga 👍
God, that game was so frustrating. I never finished it because I got sick of losing characters, even after I just did a blood test like 2 MINUTES before hand.
If you ever have a game based on a popular franchise, and then replace the primary expected antagonist with generic soldiers, you're doing it wrong.
Didn’t even know this existed. Thanks for letting me know!
Yeah this game was mediocre at best
Tyvm for making this!
Wow, amazing job on the thing. Loved everything about your videos. Keep up the great work, guys.
Imagine this game being made today? Would be epic because they could do so much more with the mechanics they wanted to implement into the game & the mythology of The Thing itself
Bravo dudes!!
Now help me create the sequel, set in the 80’s with all its glory.
