I’m only into your vid about 3mins and you have NAILED IT!!!!!! So many retirement channels think you need to be traveling all the time or your some kind of fudy dudy if you just want to stay home.
My grandparents never left our state their whole lives. And my great grandparents never left the county they farmed in. These guys and gals preaching to travel are worth millions and just don’t get it. Some people are happy where they put down roots.

You are so right. People are being taught to fear retirement. Yes there are no rules in retirement. Nothing wrong with laying back with a piece of straw in your mouth watching the birds.

Semi-retired, wife about ready to fully retire. Made last house payment yesterday in preparation. Traveling is exhausting as you age, tourist destinations are full of the things you want to retire from in the form of other people. All we really want is a good cup of morning coffee and the view out our back deck. I've never understood the need of retirees to cram a million things into their retirement. To me it's all about relaxing and staying moderately active. God offers enough free stuff outdoors to satisfy my needs.

I love retirement. They eliminated my 37 yr job in 2012. I was 61. At 62 I took SS. I am the happiest person just living life. Debt free, have savings and live in our house of 45 yrs. We are simple people. Never lived above our means. Never kept up with the Joneses. Peace and contentment ❤️✝️🇺🇸🙏

It’s not about “retirement” it’s about living and being relevant, present, and independent with the people you care about most. Making a difference for the good when and where you can.

Retired at 55 Steve. Very easy to fall into the trap of not “experiencing “ enough and living up to others expectations about the desired retirement people have in their heads.Truth is when you retire you get the time to reflect and be honest with yourself about what makes you happy. I always thought we would doa lot of traveling but the truth is I am quite happy at home. Thanks for the content as always!

I couldn’t agree more. The main thing I wanted from retirement was to maintain my same lifestyle that I had while working. Bonus if I’m able to travel a little extra.
I do try to stay active for my health. When I was a kid in the seventies I watched my grandparents retire. Both sets lived a very modest lifestyle. One set continued horseback riding, as they had before, expanded their gardening, and did some traveling mostly around the US. They lived into their nineties. The other set had worked very, very hard their whole lives and when they retired they just wanted to relax. They spent most of their time sitting on the couch and you could see their decline. Both were gone by 70. The main reason I work too much is to keep my body from decaying.

I don't care what anyone else's expectations are from retirement. I will do it my own way.
The best thing everyone can do for themselves is to prepare for retirement at least 20-30 years before it happens.
When you can pay all of your bills with enough left over to treat yourself now and then, that's when you can retire.

I wanted my husband to retire for several reasons. One reason was so he could enjoy life - he'd cancelled several vacation days because work needed him. I wanted us to be able to spend time together. He may get involved in part time work at some point, but right now he is adjusting to life on his own terms. I agree you don't have to retire to something like a job and you don't have to fill every second.

I traveled all over the place when I was young. That chapter is done. While I was working I picked up the tools to do my hobbies. I did the major upgrades in the home before I was retired. I own most of the things that I need in retirement. The cost of retirement is very low for me because I planned and did the things I wanted to do before I retired. I am now retired and doing things like planning to build a green house. Sewing an Alaskan winter parka out of Wisconsin deer skin and Sherpa Wool. This is what my retirement is all about. You have to find what makes your retirement work for you.

Steve - as an engineer, I have a saying that I don't like marketing people. Know why? Because they're the creators of what you're referencing you don't like. Mass media needs to market things to separate you from your hard-earned money to stay in business and sell you something. Create a need that makes the masses feel like they're not living up to what they should, or what everyone else is. We engineers will always find something that needs fixed, repaired, piddled with whatever. Basically, we're happy in our own little worlds. Retirement, I'm learning, is whatever you want it to be and whatever makes you happy. Folks who like to sit around and do nothing could end up dying early from that, who knows. But if that makes them happy, then have at it! I'm looking forward to doing what I want at a slower pace. No longer having to be a weekend warrior. Anyway, I guess you got me thinking enough to comment. I usually don't, but today's topic made it happen. Enjoy the weekend.

Greetings Steve from Minnesota! I love the wisdom of this video. It really speaks to me. I’ve been watching your videos for a long time. Not sure maybe two years. They’ve all got some wisdom in them and thanks for that. Almost 42 years working in production/factory . Before that I was working at 10 years old on a dairy farm. When I retire, I just want to relax at least for a while. I have lots of things on a list that I want to do when I’m done working. However, I also love the fact that You have to live your life and make memories as you go through life. Don’t wait for retirement to make memories and experiences. Right now it’s looking like May 2 , will be my last day of work. I’m looking forward to it. We have a boat on the Mississippi river and I plan on spending all summer on the River And not worrying about much of anything else. Thanks again for your videos. Keep it up!

I enjoy being an "Active Senior" as far as I do what I want and participate in things that I want to do. This Winter has been less active because of the weather, I've been hibernating and I"m OK with that. We do OK financially, better than some, worse than others but there is no way I can live the "Retirement Lifestyle" that is portrayed out there by the media and advertising. I retired at 60 and health insurance was a major expense but I'll be 65 this year and looking forward to Medicare. I do plan on doing some more traveling while I can, I'm active in church, do some breakfasts with some friends once or twice a month, take care of my mini-farm and animals. I'm always on the lookout for "free" local activities. My basic goal is trying to stay healthy and physically active. I've definitely cut back on purchasing things. I'm happy with the things I have. Who needs a new car or new furniture or a bunch of new stuff for my home at this age?

This is the first video I’ve ever watched of yours, and it makes a massive amount of sense. I appreciate your idea that retirement can look like anything you want it to look like. I turned 65 a couple of months ago and I thought of working until 70, but now I’ve decided against that. Too many people at my church, my age or older, are falling to degenerative diseases and cancer, so I have decided to pack it in, start Medicare, and live off of savings for a few months until beginning SS. After a trip to the local SS office on Monday to ask some questions, I will give my two-week notice.
    Wish me luck, please. 🙂

I’m much like you currently into my 33rd year of shift work at the same chemical plant at the age of 56. I lead a very simple life as a widower, I enjoy weightlifting daily with walks, I buy my clothes and books at thrift stores and am perfectly content with my simple life. As of this week my net worth just went north of a $1,100,000 and I still worry about retirement. This frigid weather we’ve been working in lately has me seriously contemplating just when I want to get out but as it stands I still make good money with seven weeks off a year so that puts me working about 11 days a month if I can just make it to March of each year. Enjoy your perspective from someone much like myself it seems.

This to me is refreshing to hear. I think the word retire is the problem. You retire a tool when its worn out. I am thinking of "retiring" from my current job at 62 but looking at it as just moving on. I have no idea what to expect as it seems like there is a secret curtain you are not allowed to look through on what retirement is about and if you choose to look through the curtain there is no going back.
The financial planners and you tubers have charts and grafts and risk analysts saying this that and everything else. Commercials show retirees jet setting the world, buying race cars zooming around tracks. I don't get it. Seems like 3 squares a day and a decent house with a dog is all you need.
I think k Steve has it figured out.

I’ve been retired for 4 1/2 years now. When I went back to my job I retired from one man said wow you’ve aged. Yes I did and I thought, yup 4 1/2 years worth . And they were way better aging in retirement than aging in work. Yee -hah !!!

Yep. This was done in my moms kitchen. I was over there messing around that day. She has one through that door you see in the video also. That's her Den. Thanks. Steve

Seems to me retirement will just be one really long weekend, I'll be doing whatever I usually do on the weekend, but with more time. Fuck the cruises.

Yes, yes, yes. I find having a retirement purpose so annoying. I didn’t have time to do anything when I was working. Why can’t I relax. A purpose in life is not to help yourself, it’s to help everyone else. Get a job. Do a volunteer job. I’m not good enough to be my own purpose apparently. If you arent paying someone’s salary stop telling them what to do apparently some peoples purpose is to tell you that you need a purpose.

"Not good enough to be my own purpose" exactly how they make you feel. The big problem is everybody has their own idea about those things. My purpose ain't anybody else's and vice-versa. Same when I worked. Too busy keeping keeping a roof over our heads and food in the bellies to do much of anything else. Now I want to kickback a bit. Thanks. Steve

I wonder if the talk you refer to is aimed at a younger generation, who, unlike us boomers, are facing a much tougher environment. Buying a house, let alone paying off a house, is so much harder. Defined Benefit pensions are rare now. A scary stock market for their DC pension. The job for life that I enjoyed is not so common now. I would not want to be a younger person hoping for a comfortable retirement now. Maybe the voices you hear are trying to scare the younger generation into taking action now. I didn’t have to give retirement a thought until it was time to retire. Maybe I should make a YT video advising people that if they want a comfortable retirement like me, they just need to be born earlier 😀

My favorite line of BS is you have to have a million dollars to retire comfortably. I still laugh at that.

Doesn't sound right to me either. Suppose I got $999k you telling me I can't retire. Doesn't hold water. Some very well might need that much or more but I don't think most "Average Steve's" do. I sure hope so anyway cause I ain't got it. Take care. Steve
