  • That's how I repaired and restored a Realistic Micro-27 Microcassette Corder, which is one of the three models used in the 90's series Twin Peaks by David Lynch.
At this link you can find more information about the dictaphones used in the series by the FBI agent Dale Cooper, one of the main characters:

*Eventually I had to keep the original belt as the one I bought as replacement and I installed was a bit too thick and it slipped away from the capstan after a while.
*for my introduction I recorded my voice with a SONY M-455 Microcassette Corder
    Enjoy!

I have a non-working specimen that I'm going to try and repair one day. It looks intimidating to be honest.

Mine seems to mostly work mechanically, but it makes awful noises that sound like feedback. They change the character when I touch it around the main IC, and sometimes they go away but I still don't think it detects the signal from the playhead. I'm completely lost in this, where would you start?

Hi. According to my experience, this could be an issue related to the REC button which inside is going to push an internal little switch that, when dirty, might cause that feedback noise. Try to clean it up and see if this noise disappears.

@@macropathsoundscapes You're spot on. I spritzed it with a contact cleaner and it worked! but I can't quite reach the contacts without removing the board to give them a thorough cleaning. Without that it only works for a while, then needs to be spritzed again. Also I managed to lose one of the screws somewhere inside (I suspect it got stuck to the speaker).

@@svofski Glad to hear it! So, just focus more on that and have it cleaned. Yes, you need to remove the board to properly reach the ... unreachable :D Good luck with that!
