Knowing when NOT to fly - BANDARRA

- David from BGD had a demo Lynx (High EN-C Paraglider) that I could borrow and test fly and since he lives in a beautiful part of the country we decided to do a little day trip to get to know more about it.
We got a lot more that what we bargained for as the scenery was breathtaking and the mountain air intoxicating.
Both me and Gemma decided not to fly based on info from the local pilots on the site and conditions but it was a great experience none the less.
Big thanks to Pedro, Graça and Fernando for showing us their backyard and for the beers! We need to go back soon! :)

I love you for posting this one more than all the rest. Everybody wants to post his highlights and his successes and just kind of brush things like this under the rug. People have a difficult time admitting they're under a lot of pressure from all sorts of directions when they make any kind of a decision.
Thanks Mark, appreciate it
Knowing when NOT to fly is just as important as being a good pilot on the air. There's one particular video that marked me where Chrigel Maurer is shown refusing to take off in a Red Bull competition, while other pilots are going for it. If the legend himself is humble enough to know when not to take-off, we should take note and learn from it. Safe flights!
Probably the best video on the entire subject anywhere online where someone jumps up and says I have a long list of rules and I'm not breaking any of them I'll come back another day. The guy that knows the area and has flown these conditions after being there for a long time has such an advantage. Someday you'll be that old guy everybody respects.
Greetings from Brazil!
Respect for not flying. Your right to not change too many things at once. You should have taken your own glider with you though. As bruce would say, beware of the cheesers. Its easy to be put off by others when they say it's not right. Yet they flew without issue. This raises issues with that individuals perception of "Not right". Their not right may well be different to your not right.
Always be confident in assessing a site by yourself as well as taking on others feedback.
If you had your own glider, I bet you'd have flown ;)
True. I've launched in conditions I thought were a little sketchy and did get some minor injuries both on take offs and landings. I've always survived to fly another day but now I am limping a bit. So my advice is ....listen to your intuition it's 99.99% right.
Thank you for this video!
A montanha estará lá te esperando hoje, amanhã e quem sabe pra sempre! Sua decisão foi a mais certa e sensata para um sitio de voo desconhecido. Segurança sempre! Congrats couple!
Great video. Beautiful scenery with a good lesson taught. One change at a time are words of wisdom. Thanks for posting.
Nice touristic video :)
I’ve chosen not to fly many times. Last weekend I was flying in sprint league (beginners XC comp) and I flew the first day and had a great flight and landed early because it was super strong. On the second day I was all kitted out and standing in line to launch but watching some seriously spicy launches I decided not to fly. Don’t ever want to have the fact that you paid to fly in the event encourage you to fly in conditions your not comfortable with. Better to live to fly another day than take risks in conditions you are not sure about.
Hello from Tunisia banda :)
Resist to the tentation is very hard Always 🙏thank you for this video and for remembering that👌
Enjoyed the trip. Portugal looks awesome !!!!
Glad to see I'm not the only one to live by the saying... It's okay to walk Back Down the mountain. Good decision to listen to the locals. I like that change one thing at a time. Good for you. Thanks for the video hope some of these Hotshot youngsters will see it and think.
Thanks for taking us along for the adventure. That was fun. I thought you guys were going to hike. Then I see you get out of the car and you are at the top. LOL
ahah we did have to hike Robert, but it was only 15-20 minutes and we were very sweaty so we just left that out with the power of editing :P
Good call! But I guess it is a little bit like climbing Mt. Everest and then making the call that you are not going to summit event though you are sooo close - but the conditions are not right. I've been sitting on quite a few mountain tops with my wing only to have to climb all the way down again due to bad weather coming in or the wind or thermals getting too strong. Unfamiliar take-off spot, new equipment, listening to the locals - yeah, you made the right call! Better safe than sorry! Happy landings!
I'm sure you've heard the say...better to be on the ground and wishing you were in the air than in the air and wishing you were on the ground! Live to fly another day :-)
8:39 watching this... in the middle of the summer... 30c outside, I'm like, is wish I was there right now
I love your videos! I'd go for a Learn by Doing Compression Strap!
Good judgement my friend.
this place can be found on google earth, looks beautiful, but i am sure it was cold!
You guys are so cool. Hope to meet you some day
I can't believe how fast you were driving backwards 7 mins into the video :-)
ahah :D
I like the compression strap idea, what about a concertina bag and strap for the big Donos?
I like the idea Bill! We might need to look at making these things ourselves though as I don't know anywhere that can make personalised items like that in such low amounts. Would be an awesome learning experience though :)
@@AndreBandarra1 maybe somewhere in chine (of course) does like 200-500 runs and not sure how much, could be a great graff idea in store also if not just for Patreon donors.
ignoring group pressure is difficult... but i find that if my gut is saying "no" - I don't go
Moustache running wild!

does not look like you guys are using any type of wind meter to know when it is a good time to take off, so i assume you just feel and know when the air is at right speed to take off.its nice to be able to view the video from right here at home,i can almost feel it! but i would love to be right there to watch and to see, to smell the ocean,to feel the wind,.
Come back soon! For some flying and more beers, eheh ;)
Absolutely we'll be back! Also, Saturday at the beach was amazing and got to fly the Lynx loads. You should come visit... just saying :)
Will do, for sure, thanks! How's the Lynx?
@@pedroferraopatricio Amazing, so fast! Full video about it coming out on Friday :P
would you have changed your opinion about flying, if you had a highA or lowB wing?
For sure, the main reason I didn’t fly was that it was a thermic new site on a wing I’ve never flown before. If it was my own wing I would have done it. I try to only change one thing at a time
You've tried a lot of wings now... what's your favourite mid-B glider wing so far?
Wow...tricky decision...still deciding I think!
@@AndreBandarra1 OK, 3 favourites?
in 1:48 can you explain about the take off surface material ?
what is the best takeoff surface material for permanent usage ?
It was like a pastic fiber mesh. Kind of the stuff you find in hot countries that people use in carparks to shade cars? Or sometimes you find it in construction sites to close off the building area. I'm not sure about your second question.
The best take off surface is grass. if they can't grow grass, they put plastic tarp on the ground, it protect the wing and lines that can be damaged by rocks and dust. If there is no grass there usually small spiky plants that really like to catch and tangle lines just before take off. The tarp prevent that.
High performance wing have very thin lines without sheathing, to reduce air resistance, but it also reduce wear and tear resistance when on the ground.
They usually put tarp in places where there is a lot of paraglider pilots or races.
Good
First 🙂 now I'll watch the video.
That was a nice a nice tour. Hardly 2000 meters for the highest mountain :o We have 5 of the World's 14 tallest mountains above 8000 meters :) and 4 of them are around Concordia :) So, the north is place for Giants :) Islamabad the Capital city is surrounded by a hill range and its elevation is between 1400-1500 meters :)
With so many mountains, you guys are really lucky! :)
@@AndreBandarra1 hehe now I just got to develop the skills, baby steps :) It's my dream to fly the Concordia glacier. K2 and such peaks are there :) I think would need to carry oxygen though :)
we have a few hike and fly mountains here in Kananaskis country. After a 3 hr trip up a 30 deg incline the last thing you want to do is walk back down. Windy or not if its doable I know I would be tempted.
That's the thing isn't it. How much time or effort you expended to get there shouldn't be a factor to flying or not. In an ideal world we would be able to assess the conditions in isolation of all that and make a rational decision. That's rarely the case as we're always influenced one way or the other
humm! actually is the second highest mountain in portugal, dont forget açores still part os portugal! hehe!
ahah very true! And also one of my favourite parts of Portugal! :D
0:04 TWSS 🤣
Ha!
I'm still laughing
Is that the azinha takeoff?
No, Azinha is in front, south facing. This one was Vale de Amoreira
I would say "its hit and miss alot in our sport".
see guys money does not always buy's happiness
Вы вообще летать умеете ?
