So of course we had to see it for ourselves. I'm sorry my very sporadic observations do not do this incredible sport justice. But it was absolutely grand watching, and now Ben wants to hurl..be a hurler(?).

I'm from Limerick and what you said at the end is true. Hurling is something pure, I gave my life to the game and was never paid and got some terrible injuries but I'd do it all again without a second thought. Not for glory, honor, or money, just for the love of it.

Im just after coming back from my first hurling training session lol I've played Gaelic football for like 8 years now but our club doesn't do hurling so recently our minor team were talking about starting hurling and we had 17 of us turn up all from the minor team

An Irish guy here, it's so cool to see people from other countries observing our culture and history. Hurling has been in steeped in tradition and culture for generations and centuries. Hope you enjoyed your day and if you're back in Ireland in the near future, do go to more games!
Important to remember that it’s especially true in terms of Gaelic Games because it is specifically an amateur sport so they are 100% there of their own volition, they’re not faking it in any manner and they’ve all given their time specifically to be there

@@nonsenseofmandi9650 it’s always a point of contention of whether or not that the athletes be paid, but the structure is different to franchised teams in America or large football teams in Britain.
People play for their local club which represents their local area. This is a microcosm of playing for your county, it’s the place you grew up where you learned your sport and you represent it.
It’s almost a mini version of representing your country and that’s how they feel about it.
Croke Park in Dublin is in the top 5 for the largest stadia in Europe (82,300/73,500 seating only) and it’s for an entirely amateur game.
Good job gurl! We Irish just love other countries finding out about this sport. It's 3000 years old and was used to get warriors amped up the night before a battle. N if uv watched the sport it makes sense! 🤣

Very nice video, glad you went and saw a game. Limerick are the current all-Ireland champions, and a very fine team. Not sure when this was shot, but looks like it was early in the season when they were still training, so this might have been the league or even one of the small competition played before that. If it was an all-Ireland championship game the stadium would be full. Still, a great way to see the sport and an experience to be sure. It looks like you were in the Gaelic Grounds, a fine traditional stadium, but badly in need of a face lift! Your point at the end of the video was dead on too, this is the authentic Irish culture, rather than a more performative event aimed at ticking tourist boxes. Hope you enjoyed your visit!

Welcome to the home of the now three in a row, 4 in 5 years All Ireland Champions Limerick. I was at that match with my sister-in-law, it was Limerick's final group match in the league as they couldn't qualify for the knockout stages of that competition so they used it as a warm up for the Championship which started a few weeks after this game.

Ps the team Limerick played are called Offaly, the team names on the scoreboards are in Irish.
Wow, thank you for giving me more context. I had no clue I was picking such a beloved team when I bought our tickets. In fact it looks hours of research to even figure out HOW to buy tickets, but I'm so glad I persevered, because hurling is now one of my favorite sports. @@nonsenseofmandi9650 Without a doubt the team is beloved. They are the best team in the country. The amount of trophies the team has won has gone beyond everyone's expectations.. but to win 4 All Ireland Championships (in 5 seasons), 4 Munster Championships (in a row) and 2 National Hurling League Titles plus a couple of pre season competitions, it's a team who are really special that achieve greatness.
Offaly have been on a downward spiral over the last few seasons, after that game vs Limerick, they lost a relegation playoff against Westmeath so Offaly will play in Division 2A of the league in 2023
I'm from limerick and play camogie ( hurling for girls) and it is currently my life and everything I do is play camogie. I'm so glad you went to see these lads do what they do best and I think it's even better as they don't get paid and can't transfer to different teams, you play for the county you were born and raise in.

The keep net isn’t for protection it’s just to catch the sliotar so they’re not running around looking for it. Often it goes over it too

Well done, a great report, the hurler ye got the photo with is Diarmuid Byrnes, the no. 5 for Limerick. Limerick won the hurling championship (All Ireland) again this year, 3 years in a row, and Diarmuid played brilliantly all year and is favourite to be named Hurler of the Year for 2022. What ye went to was a league match but championship matches have an electric atmosphere with 82,000 at the final.

They were young lads probably ,because those two teams don't play in the same division at adult level anymore,but they do at minor level which means they are teeenagers

Helmets only became compulsory about 15 years ago. Before that it was optional a d most played without helmets or at least without face shields on the helmets.

I think that you might have enjoyed a camogie (women) match more, or even a P6 match (primary school). Hurling/Irish Football is not just a sport, it is a way of life. A local team has a clubhouse that the entire town uses for other cultural activities. While hurling in the USA is more popular on the East coast, there is just about one hurling team in every state. See USGAA and NCGAA. Orlando hosted the National Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association NCGAA) this past year, Perdue University once again dominated but Notre Dame was much improved. This weekend there will be the Peach Cup in Atlanta Georgia. Teams from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina will square off. Enjoy the game!
The idea of going to a women's game or a PRIMARY SCHOOL GAME, and see the kids play! That would have been soooo amazing. Next time we go to Ireland, for sure! And I looked it up and it looks like there is a small league here in Phoenix but I did notice it is far bigger on the east coast. Are they good enough to play against Irish teams?
@@nonsenseofmandi9650 There is a national juvenile competition each year at U15, for hurling it is called Féile (festival in Irish) and for gaelic football it is called Peil na nÓg (football of the young in Irish). There are separate competitions for boys and girls teams and teams come from New York, London and elsewhere to take part, maybe not in the highest divisions but not in lowest either. It is a special weekend for any juvenile team that qualifies to take part.

hi mandi, i really enjoyed your observations of hurling🤣🤣. all so true and v funny to hear them from a tourists perspective. we are from limerick and were at that match and my 2 lads took part in the pitch invasion at the end, they love to meet their hurling heros. that was a league match and limerick went on to win the all ireland senior hurling championship this summer🇳🇬🇳🇬
Love the video and love the game with a passion,played from under 8s up until I got a bad injury in a game that finished the playing career but I never miss a championship game for my county(Wexford) I would really recommend coming to a Wexford championship game in Wexford Park, You will feel the passion and atmosphere ❤ ❤
There is actually a very funny story about a medic not in hurling ,but in gaelic football which is the other irish native game.A manager at half time in the championship game(superbowl equivalent) shouted at a "player" and claimed he was rubbish ,in the heat of anger over the poor performance of the team, and the players excuse for not playing well, he wasn't playing he was the medic.

Good video. Unfortunately you didn’t see a championship game which is even faster and rougher as the players and teams would not be at full strength at what you saw there. That looks like a league encounter

@@nonsenseofmandi9650 The All Ireland Hurling Final is the biggest game of the year, 82,300 fans in Croke Park stadium! Tickets are extremely hard to get due to everyone in both counties wanting to attend. Apart from that I would recommend a Munster Championship game, that’s where you’ll see some of the best teams in Ireland at their peak performance.

Fair play for going to a hurling match and trying to understand it. GAA is fuelled on pure passion. Maybe a fact you didn’t know but the helmets were not mandatory until 2010. Nice video I enjoyed your reaction to it. Try a Gaelic football match next if your in Ireland again but I would say hurling is much better to watch and much harder to play

Fun stuff- Gaelic sports actually work a lot like American ones in that the teams play a regular season in a league, but then have a knockout championship format afterwards, with that final game (the all-ireland final) being the most important

Not sure if you know this, Hurling (you call it "Curling" at 16:30 - Curling is a very different game from Scotland) is an amateur sport - the players don't get paid (apart from money for gas / petrol to travel to and from training and matches) - they have everyday 9-to-5 jobs attend to. Also, you play for the county / club of your birthplsce with few exceptions. Women also play essentially the same but it is called Camogie - pronounced Kam-oh-gee".
I know I died inside when i saw that typo of “curling”. My internet is so slow I didn’t have the heart to reupload, but I’m glad you pointed it out. Also wow! I didn’t know any of that about hurling. That is amazing. So people really are doing it for the absolute love of the sport?!

What you said in the end is so true. Anyone playing In the GAA, be it hurling or gaelic football are all doing it voluntarily and have day jobs outside of the game. It's all for the love of the game.

So I am about to write a scene in a novel with a hurling game. Any details you think someone should certainly mention? (I have never had the pleasure of traveling to Ireland or seeing a real hurling game, so I can use all the help I can get.)
When I first came up with the idea for this scene, I thought hurling was a mythical game because the only place I had ever heard of it was that King Finvarra of the Daoine Sidhe had hurling players in his fairy court. I was really shocked and delighted when I found out it was a real game, and Irishmen still played it.
I don't know how popular it is in places other than Ireland, but the town of Minions, Cornwall has a group of standing stones up on the moors that are said to have once been hurling players who played on Sunday and were turned to stone.
Wow! this sounds like a really cool book. And I had no clue about those standing stones in Cornwall, that is so cool. As I said, I am very much still clueless. But even reading the comments here will give you a better idea. I have found that learning about hurling online is a lot harder than actually talking to someone who has played. And clearly, I could be AT a game and still not get it right. Are you also from the US? There are hurling clubs in most major US cities, here in Phoenix they have one. It might be a good idea to go to a local game or meet up, and ask those players more.

Hurling and Gaelic football are two very physical sports hurling is very good in Munster and Gaelic football is better in Leinster with the exception of Kilkenny who have reached 2 consecutive all Ireland finals hurling is better there cause there the only county without a Gaelic football team and limerick demolished Offaly because they have won 4 consecutive all Ireland finals

No because its a game between irelands best team and a team only in the top 16 ,in the secondary competition the league. There was a combined attendance during the summer in that stadium in the main championship for 2 games of 54000 and when limerick won the all ireland they played before 82300 in croke park
