I love the humility when you say you are “above average”, then add that you “only” finished 61st out of 161 Dakar starters that year. That is the top 33% of the top 0.1% of motorcycle riders in the world. You’re doing alright Llel! 😉
So true. One of the things that keeps me sane when I'm training for something is just to aim for consistent effort. Even if you just do that, you get faster!
I learned the same lesson from running, rucking, and triathlon as well. Your mind becomes accustomed to it being hard, too. It never gets easier, you just handle it better.
Fantastic video, I am just stunned that this channel isn't 1 million subscribers as you guys obviously put so much effort into making such great content.
“ I fall into that category of, um, above average…. Maybe?” A lot closer to pro than most of us can ever aspire to. Great video, keep ‘em coming, Lel 👍🏻
“Above average maybe”?? You finished a Dakar Rally!!! That is exponentially above what the “average” rider can do, no matter what we might try to convince ourselves of while out on an adventure or single track ride. I’ll be on my T7, rolling across the sand at what feels like a good pace and start wondering if I could do it for even one day, let alone many days, then it occurs to me that I’m averaging maybe 1/3 of the speed. Of a Dakar rider. I miss the days when the Dakar was won on big twins, before huge money, sponsors, pro riders , etc transformed it into what it is today. I think the biggest shock to me is how much it costs to race Dakar, even as a privateer. Your video shows such a different perspective than you get from simply watching the highlight videos-thank you for the reality check! Having ridden motocross, played hockey, and competed in archery tournaments with pro level athletes, the chasm between even above average enthusiasts and pros is hard to fathom; the difference between low ranked pros and super stars can be equally shocking. Thanks for a great video!
@@BrakeMagazineI for one very much enjoy it. At 77 y.o, my marathon days are now 20 yrs behind me (yes, I know some still run at my age), but watching you do this was great and very instructive. More fitness (even for me) can mean more motorcycling. Thanks! Oh, and HNY. Les
Great job. Loved the whole concept. I was living in Paris when the race was launched for the 1st time. I would wake up at 5:00 am to walk down direction Trocadero place and enjoy the machines and racers. Such good memories unfortunately the original spirit of Thierry Sabine hasn't been maintained. Nowadays we barely have true adventurous amateurs but rather Pros racers with factory machines and very high budgets. Also what I'am missing the most is the African continent with it's breath taking sceneries and lovely people.
Nice video. The experience you're describing fits exactly with how I find training for a marathon. It's all building blocks and if you put enough of them together you can get somewhere that didn't seem possible at the start.
Greetings from Oregon great vid you are one of the only people to present a different behind the camara so to speak of what it takes to be a DAKAR rider! thanks for the workout you went through 😎
Great video Llel - narrative, shots, all top notch. Really appreciate your content and the effort you put in, a lot of work clearly goes into these 20 short minutes
Llel, as you've finished a Dakar that makes you a lot closer to a pro rider than 'just above average'. There will be a lot more riders wishing to attain your level, than those you're wishing to emulate. But I appreciate the humbleness of that comment.
I’ve wondered often how these guys train. I did my first off road adventure trip last year and soon realized a certain level of fitness is necessary even as a novice. Surprised that it’s not more intense. Thanks for a great insight into what’s required 👍
I think the intensity is the volume. Different types of training have different requirements and for the most part endurance training is about volume and maintaining power, so there isn’t any benefit to utterly killing yourself daily. That’s what I learnt!
Superb insight you really gave us bike lovers a feeling of what it would be like to be really committed, i think two years hard training and of course the miles in the saddle and maybe you could half that 50th to a 25th place which would be tremendous, Great journey thanks for sharing it with us.
I doubt it, but thanks for the kind words. The riders at 25th place are a big step up on my ability and my willingness to push hard in the open desert 😂
@@BrakeMagazine Yes your right, looking at the level of athlete, the finance poured into it , you would do well to qualify,.. finishing 50th back then tho is still a feather in your cap and a dam fine effort.
I think the level is probably pretty consistent in the race, it's just the gap from 50-30 is big and the gap from 30-20 is the same jump again. It's really hard to understand until you see it y'know.
As much as it pains me to say it 😜 that's great story telling Llel, really well done and, dammit, I even watched it to the end. Worth it, that last bit ,as you guys captured some super low-light footage there. Some decent riding action, too. All together... excellent. Hmmmf... 😗

Great video. An Indoor trainer works wonders for cycle/bike fitness. Multiple kits for each activity (shirts/shorts/bibs/swim costume/towels) - sorted and ready to pick up and walk helps reduce admin to once a week - also helps when weather changes, injury or strain or simply the gym pool is getting cleaned etc so easy to change activity when planned activity can’t be done (did it for triathlon training and transferred it to multi day dirt bike rally’s). Food / nutrition is also a mission -bulk cooking Sundays.

Wow, you read my mind about what content I'd like to see! Here I am a bit over 6 months away from my 40th birthday and I've set the goal for myself to train my body, build a rally bike and enter a serious rally race during my 40th year of life. Impressive Llew, are you continuing with your regime of fitness and readiness?. Loved your speed and commitment in all the riding shots. Awesomeness !!! 👊🏻😎👊🏻
That was a great video, and really informative. Thank you. I am pretty good at getting to the gym, and pretty crappy at getting on the bike (I mean training miles). Did you find any recommendations on the split of steady state bike vs the strength / power / sprint work in the gym?
The biggest thing that makes a winner is drive. Years ago, more than I'd like to admit, a cycling coach friend of mine and I were discussing the up and coming young riders. I was very excited about a local rider who I thought had what it took to go all the way and be competitive at the Tour level. My coach friend disagreed because; "When he places second he's up on the podium smiling because he thinks he had a good day" His money was on another promising junior "because when he's on the podium in second he's angry that he lost". The local guy I liked did ride the Tour de France a few times but as a domestique and I can't remember his name at all right now, the other rider was Lance Armstrong.
Best bet is to listen to podcast on Patreon where Skyler outlines it quite well and then follow up with Nick Chase, Skyler's Coach. It all came from them and I don't wanna give his work away when he spends time developing it :)
Quality 👏🏼👏🏼 the other massive factor is age. But you probably don’t need to worry about that yet. I started serious cycling at 27 and within a year I was a lean machine and could ride full chat for about 3.5 hours. Nearly 30 years later and I have nowhere near power or stamina. A 1 hour 40 minute route in the New Forest in the 90’s took me 2 hours 45 in 2021 😮 Oh to be young again 🤣
I'm such a sick masochist for stuff like this that i'd absolutely kill it with a smile on my face the whole way. I've got massive core strength, endurance and i can ride open desert in full send mode all day long. I've done plenty of 500 mile open desert days easily. But i don't have the resources to go do Dakar. Baja might be possible someday but i'd like to find some semi-local weekend events.
Life has taught me that the more you focus on each step towards any goal, before you know it you have progressed faster than imaginable. Especially with creating artwork taught me to focus on my weaknesses and turn them into my strengths, then before you know it those once weaknesses are stronger than your previous strengths :) Persistence pays dividends in all areas of life!

From training triathlon the biggest thing I learned was, "it doesn't get easier, you just get faster".
Great point. I do find your body gets better at not being sore from the workload.
So true. One of the things that keeps me sane when I'm training for something is just to aim for consistent effort. Even if you just do that, you get faster!

Great video Llel, love these Portugal films
Thanks Thomas!
Thanks Tom!
That earned a Sub
Great video. Always good to be reminded how special & blessed those lucky gits are! Roll on 5th Jan.
Amen on that!
Great video, mate! 🤙🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff. Ironman/triathlon training next to really test you. Last 8 week block before IM Wales last year was 20 hours of swim bike run a week 😀
What model bike was that? Husky FX450?
FE 450
@BrakeMagazine Ahhh thanks, very cool vid!
Impressive Llew, are you continuing with your regime of fitness and readiness?. Loved your speed and commitment in all the riding shots. Awesomeness !!! 👊🏻😎👊🏻
To some degree. No way I can maintain that much and do any more videos though! Thanks for watching mark!
Well that is hell of story. Sometimes it's the little details that matter more than anything else.
This was an instant subscribe! Thanks for sharing! Stay safe!…
Fantastic video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, thanks a lot for sharing! Is there anywhere we can follow in your and Skylar's footsteps and get the training itinerary?
Speak to Nick Chase. On instagram he is Race Chase. 😌
Awesome stuff - really enjoyed the video. You tell a great story, Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! Can you share the full training schedule?
Best bet is to listen to podcast on Patreon where Skyler outlines it quite well and then follow up with Nick Chase, Skyler's Coach. It all came from them and I don't wanna give his work away when he spends time developing it :)
Congrats 👏
Thanks!
That was one awesome video.
Glad you liked it!
A 1 hour 40 minute route in the New Forest in the 90’s took me 2 hours 45 in 2021 😮
Oh to be young again 🤣
I’m pretty keen to get a solid base before the old age creeps up on me though. It’s happening fast 😂😂
Awesome riding Llel, I wish I could ride my road bike for 3 weeks and go to the gym and ride like this 🤣 As always, well done 🙌
In the podcast Skyler said he didn't go to the gym for years, got a bit fat and got more stamina. I wish I could do that 😂
great video. I make tv so i know you put a lot of work into this one. well done
Oh nice! What TV do you make? And thanks!
A lot over the years but mostly of motorsport and sports TV@@BrakeMagazine
Sounds awesome!
Good vid, hard to fit into a true racer's world. Good fortune.
Pretty wild tryna keep up and do any work at the same time 😂
I hope you race it someday... It's a good video and it left me envious of your energy😂...
I doubt I will race it again. 😊
2:35 I recuest to know the podcast
The stop to refuel was in a village called "Bicos" 😉
Really interesting vid, well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really enjoyed that. Well done for making such great videos. Now; what was I supposed to be doing?😂
I have no idea but I'm sure it was watching UA-cam!
Wow! That’s a really great video
Glad you liked it!
Phenomenal content!
Thanks!
Life has taught me that the more you focus on each step towards any goal, before you know it you have progressed faster than imaginable. Especially with creating artwork taught me to focus on my weaknesses and turn them into my strengths, then before you know it those once weaknesses are stronger than your previous strengths :)
Persistence pays dividends in all areas of life!
Amen on that!
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
