Yeah, they took out the traction motor and replaced it with a idler wheel and then when they get it to a locomotive shop all they have to do is put the traction motor on that axle because of you noticed that axle had a big ring gear on it and that’s what the traction motor bolts on to They do that when the engine is on the road like that until they can get it back to a locomotive shop
I don't see where they 'changed' the traction motor. The failed traction motor was removed and an an axle was placed in the locomotive truck so it could be moved to a shop for the motor to be changed. Emergency repair. My father who had worked 45 years for the railroad (BNSF) worked at a shop that did traction motor changes. A drop pit is normally used to remove and replace tractiom motors.

The wheels with the exposed gear is an old component serving as a dummy axle.
