  • The first true woodturning demonstration that I ever watched on UA-cam was Jimmy Clewes' turning a square oriental box. At the time, I tried my hand at turning it and it was mildly successful. I ran across one of Jimmy's demos just the other day so, I thought it would be fun to try this project again after gaining 2 years of experience, and also add my own little flair to the design.
Let me know what you think of my attempt in the comments!

The wood is kiln dried cherry with an ebonizing solution applied to the bottom. This solution reacts with the tannins in the cherry and causes it to oxidize and turn a dark brown, almost black. The finial is made from East Indian ebony.
Then the entire thing was finished with Hampshire Sheen Danish Oil.
I had a sticker swap to catch up on as well. David Icenhower from Webfoot Resin & Wood Creations - / @webfootresinandwoodcr...

Seth, I'm blown away at just how beautiful this box is! The contrast between the top and the bottom is stunning. The ebony finial is so complimentary. Awesome craftmanship! Thanks!

What I think! For starters Jimmy Clewes is someone great to get inspiration from. What I think about this piece, it is OUTSTANDING. Two beautiful pieces of wood, beautiful lines, beautiful coloring and beautiful finish. 👍👍 What I think about your production is not so positive. The speed up video makes the process seem so frantic. 😟😟I don't need to see every cut you make. It would be more pleasing to watch if you just show the most important cuts at real speed. The sanding and finish was better. And you kept the finish labels on screen long enough for these old eyes to read them. 🙂Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂🙂

Hi Glen, thank you so much for your kind words! I really do appreciate your criticism, both the good and the bad.

    • @glencrandall7051

@@BrickhouseCraftWorks I get the same response from others. "Have to keep the video short". I don't advocate making the video longer. Devote the same amount of time to the parts you speed up. You show the same amount of time but in real time. So instead of showing 50 cuts so fast you show 5 cuts but in real time. You just pick the parts that are most interesting and or important. OK so now I am off the soap box.

What is the wood ebonizing solution you use??

    • @BrickhouseCraftWorks
      @BrickhouseCraftWorks  26 днів тому

      Hello! Thanks for watching.
It’s an iron acetate solution. It’s made by dissolving #0000 steel wool in white vinegar. Wash the steel wool in water and Dawn to remove the oil film that’s present in new steel wool. After it’s dried place the steel wool in a glass jar and cover with white vinegar. The best vinegar is that designed for cleaning rather than cooking but, any vinegar will do. Leave it until all the steel wool dissolves. Make sure you either poke holes in a lid, or cover with plastic so that gasses can escape and it doesn’t explode. After a few days, when all the steel wool is dissolved, you can strain out the excess bits, rust, and funkiness from the liquid then apply to the wood.
Now, this only works for woods that have a high tannin content. This video was cherry which worked better than I expected, but not nearly as well as something like oak. You can increase the tannin content of any wood though by applying a black tea solution to the wood and allow it to dry, then apply the ebonizing solution.
      Hope this helps!!

I have the same bandsaw and the same lathe. How come the crap I produce doesn’t look as good as yours??

Haha!! Trust me, I feel the same way about my stuff too! We will always be our own toughest critic!
On top of that, this particular piece isn’t even my own design, so I can’t even take credit for it. It’s a slightly embellished version of Jimmy Clewes’ square oriental box.
The only advice I can give you is to look for inspiration everywhere, including to other turners. Lastly, focus on your honing your finishing regimen. Sanding and finishing should take as long or longer than it took to turn the piece.
      Thanks for watching!
