  • mdshop.us/AnemoneCare Today we are going to learn about anemones and walk you through the basics of keeping one. Every hobby has an entry point. For most reef tank hobbyists that entry point is keeping a clownfish along with their frequent partner in crime, the anemone. Although most people pair their nems with clowns, they can live happy and healthy lives without their symbiotic buddy. Most of what we will talk about today works for the majority of anemones out there, but this video mainly geared towards the most popular nem on the market, the rose bubble tip anemone.
    There are over one thousand species of sea anemones in the wild and they are spread throughout the world’s oceans. They are classified in the phylum Cnidaria and, much like their cousin the jellyfish, they have stinging cells called nematocysts. Despite preying on small fish and crustaceans, its not uncommon to see anemones in the wild with symbiotic partners, most commonly the clownfish. In most cases, these partnered animals provide the anemone with a continual food source while the nem provides them with protection from predators.
    The major thing to keep in mind when keeping anemones is that stability is your key to success. New tanks go through numerous cycles when first established and don’t really start to settle until around the six month point. To avoid stressing an anemone more than necessary, It really is best to wait until your tank matures to this point before you start trying to add them. The ideal parameters for nems fall in line with standard reef tank parameters so adding one to an existing tank should be just fine. Just like with reef tanks, the larger your system is, the easier it is to maintain stability. Although its nowhere near impossible, keeping anemones in tanks under twenty gallons can be tough as your parameters are more likely to swing. The best way to make sure your water is where it needs to be is to keep up with a frequent water change schedule using RODI water and a high quality marine salt mix. Hooking a ATO system up to your tank is also key in maintaining your sality levels and keeping your nem happy and healthy.
    When setting up a anemone friendly tank, one of the most important things to keep in mind that anemones move, and can move a lot. It's not uncommon to put a nem in your tank and all of a sudden see it disappear, only to see it reappear in another spot a few days later. We have two good size bubble tips in our Innovative Marine 50 gallon lagoon and although one of them seems to be happy where he is, the second never seems to settle and seems to change its mind on a weekly basis. A variety of factors including lighting and flow can cause anemones to move and unfortunately there isn’t always a way to keep them where you want.
    As some anemones are frequent wanderers, you may need to take action to “nem proof” your tank so that they don’t injure themselves. If you are working with a system where your heater is in your main display as opposed to in a sump or back chamber, it is possible that the nem will get a bit too close to it and burn itself. An easy solution is to place your heater in a corrugated plastic tube so that it will still have appropriate water flow while also isolating it from the anemone. One unfortunate experience a staffer at our office had was that his nem decided to wander into his powerhead. Some nems also have long sweeping tentacles that can get caught in powerheads even if they are just in the area. Some powerheads such as the Ecotech Vectra come with foam guards that can be placed around the pump to prevent fish and other animals from getting caught inside. Some level of protection such as this may be worth looking into to make sure that your nem doesn’t get caught as well.
    There's a couple things to keep in mind when purchasing an anemone that you need to consider. Remember that these animals are predatory in nature. Even though certain fish, like clowns, thrive when paired with nems, there are many more that will just act as food for them. Smaller fish and crustaceans are especially susceptible to being caught and especially in smaller tanks may not make a good fit. Similar to some species of LPS like hammer and corals, nems with long, sweeping tentacles are also very capable of stinging corals that surround them. Unlike these corals, the nems are capable of moving around freely. This means that they may decide to settle down next to your most precious coral and harass them. As with any livestock that you are adding to your tank, it is important to research them before buying and understand the potential consequences of adding them to your system.

    I had a tank raised clown, and it ignored the anemone. I taped a photo of a clownfish in an anemone and within a couple of days the clown found the anemone. after that it was true love!!! lol

      It was tank raised, and had never seen an anemone. The store I bought it from told me that. Clown fish had been in the tank with the anemone for two months and found the anemone 2 days later.

      I’m sure you will be just fine with an anemone. They don’t just take off at imaging stuff. They rarely move as it is. The only reason they move is to adjust to light or trying to get a better place for food sometimes to get in a higher flow area or move away from a high flow area. That or they are getting too much light or the lights are on too long so they go hide normally right under the rock they where on. That or they will go hide in shade upside down when water isn’t good or they are doing poorly. Either way they don’t just go stinging coral. Besides they don’t sting long enough to actually hurt the coral.

    i always wonder what if i want to set up an almost anemone/clownfish only tank!?! how it can mature, when there is nothing in there, because i dont like too much other stuff to be in it? i wont add the clowns before the anemones hence it will release stress among them, if there are enough anemones in to host when they settle in. i am not sure if a clean up crew is enough to make a proper maturing tank, hence nutrient import is way below the future levels...

    Our 10 year anemone became distressed and floated around tank for 5 days. We changed the water and found the sand where the anemone was living very dirty so we stirred up the sand and did a water change. Also, we had purchased a new lighting system for the tank and the growth on the glass and particles in the water were unmanagable. We took out the anemone and placed him in a 10 gallon tank with minimal lighting and clean water. The anemone looks much healthier in the 10 gallon tank. Which leads us to wonder if the water quality and lighting were a problem. We want to know how to fix our water quality and dial in the appropriate lighting. Can you help? Thankyou, Sue

    I know this video is a few years old but from most standpoints covering a heating element makes it extremely inefficient unless that covering is the intended media to be heated like in 3d printer's nozzle or ceramic heaters as well as other applications industrial or otherwise. I saw a 75% power increase with a covered Eheim JAGER 125w in a 40-gal breeder with it being on almost triple the time and the tank slowly decreasing in temperature. This method can work but with the example given it can be a huge detriment to both your heater and your tank. something that can more easily flow around the glass or actual heater to let the thermodynamics of the heater do its job but still stop anything touching it. I found screen mesh for replacing screen doors work really well and it can help with heat distribution because its a metal vs an isolating plastic. I wouldn't use anything painted. Mostly aluminum, stainless, or titanium are the best for any salt water application same rule would apply for any metal equipment neat salt water.

    • @PazLeBon
      @PazLeBon 2 роки тому

      they are sold with plastic cases many times, I think people grasp the basics and he specifically said 'appropriate" :) And it cant have a 75% power increase can it? It can have a 75% increase in energy consumption but not create power

    • @BulkReefSupply
      @BulkReefSupply  2 роки тому

      For reef tanks (anemones included), we usually suggest a 1:8:1 lighting schedule. That's 1 hour of ramp up time, 8 hours of steady intensity, then 1 hour of ramp down.
      Different anemones need different amounts of light to thrive, but for the most popular types such as bubble tip anemones, medium light (somewhere around 150-250 PAR) is a great place to start. The anemones will move around a bit to find their ideal spot, so don't stress over it too much.

    I bought a green bubble tip anemone about 4 weeks ago. It looked great and the bubbles were plump. After introducing it to the tank, seemed to hide from the lighting, and move from high up to low in the tank. I check the water all the time and it is perfect. All I have is two clowns, live rock, no corals. Some clams, snails (that reproduce), crabs and a little bit of aiptasia. The bubble tip split 2 weeks ago. Now both hide, barely exposed to any light and the bubbles are still bright green, but are shrunk and all is compact and small. I heard I should not feed it for a while and let it chill out, since it is new to the tank. What do I do?

      Oh, thank goodness I'm not the only one who noticed this, lol 😂 I mean this is a very helpful and thorough video, but come one dude, pronounce it right. I'm surprised that whoever edited this video didn't catch it because he says it many times and pronounces it wrong every single time, lol.

      It most likely bleached due to receiving too much light, too little light, or your water chemistry is off. We recommend doing a full set of water tests in order to rule that out first.

    I got my anenomes from some guy on offer up. He didn’t even give them to me in water, legit just handed them to my in an empty cup. They were there for probably 2 hours, I then plopped them into the tank. I have 14 now

    Has my entire life been a lie? Have I been saying and spelling anemone wrong? I could almost think so. But when I think back I remember never saying anenome as I say anemone. This guys just seriously went through the entire video saying anenome yet he wants people to listen to how to care for them? First step to caring for anemones is to know how to spell and pronounce it. Here I am thinking oh why not watch the video I might pick up something new I didn’t know. But I seriously can’t take a video seriously when the subject or topic can’t be pronounced correctly. Lol.

    It's ANEMONE not anenome. Very frustrating to hear someone in the industry say this incorrectly. Every kid who's seen Nemo knows how to pronounce this. That's why they are called Nems for short. Reshoot the video with the correct pronunciation. Too hard to stay focused with how many times it's pronounced incorrectly

    How about anemones of different species? Can you keep more than one color type or morph of bubble tips? How about adding in and mixing long tentacled? Rock anemones?

      You can but watch for chemical warfare.
      BTAs stick to rock work while LTAs stick to stand so no problems
      Rock flowers and BTAs should be okay together
