I really like the way masamune draws the major, but non of the anime kept his character design. I would have liked the uncensored version, it was the best scene in the whole book, I have it on untranslated Japanese version and you also get one page of in his intron depot 1 art book. For fans of his art I recommend the intron depot art books. Especially the first 2

I noticed quite a few differences stylistically between the manga and its adaptations from the tone, the art and even character personalities. Even though I ended up preferring many of its anime adaptations, I'm still glad to have read the manga and it would be cool to one day see an adaptation that closely followed the manga. Only thing is I think a lot of people would be quite confused by the shift!

Those "lesbian sex" pages actually provided surprisingly in-depth look on how sensory systems of cyborg shells work, and how incompatibilities between male and female nervous systems arise when interfacing cyborg bodies built around male and female brains. In short: male interfacing to a female shell can have unexpected feeling of shock due to the lack of certain bits down, and presence of certain bits up.

This is actually somewhat explained in some anime adaptation (SAC I think, it's been a few years since I watched it). Shame Shirow decided to remove them from all current releases, but I own the Solid Box so whatever. Can't take that from me.

Agreed. Should have never been censored. Not at all pointless/gratuitous.

Man that Astro picture in the background is dope as . To be honest stand alone laughing man would be up there my favourite anime of all time.

What a coincidence. I'm reading GiTS for the first time now. I'll make sure to leave my opinion once I'm done with it.
I've also rewatched GiTS Innocence last week and I'm still not a big fan. I think the vibe is completely different from the first one, which is not a problem anyway.

      I'd appreciate that.
Fair enough. It seems I'm in the minority when it comes to actually liking that movie.

@@Immortallium I've finished reading yesteday. To be honest, I went totally blind to the manga and was kinda expecting some similarities with the first movie. Overall, it was nice to see the beggining of GiTS and the artwork is really old school and good of course. Like you said, there's a bit of unexpected comedy which is weird compared to the more serious tone of the movies/series. The stories were interesting but not all of them grabbed me. In the end, I did enjoy it but it didnt become one of my favourites.

I was looking at the page count is 368. Does it feel too short? I've only read manga that has multiple volumes. So they are way longer

I wouldn't say so. There's quite a bit that happens that wasn't present in the film so it's worth reading from that perspective.

    Also, to the side:
Oshii Mamoru: Ghost in the Shell manga was an extremely hard material to adapt. I had to re-read it twenty eight times to even start working on the script.
80% of reviewers who took a look at the manga: Bah, the manga's just episodic tomfoolery, movie's better.

Interesting info about the lesbian sex scenes. Everyone I've heard say it was unnecessary so it's interesting to hear that there was something of substance there. I definitely wouldn't call it episodic tomfoolery but I do confess that I'm one of those people that preferred the movie over the manga. Thanks for commenting!

I first got hip to GITS sometime after 2006, before 2010. I enjoy the movies, I love the anime, and I just today wondered about the manga. Hearing that content was removed sucks...especially something that is openly advocated for in the US. In regards to Major, that is actually a very important bit and I haven't read it yet. Ha, I remember when Bato wanted that thang. lol I think I want to get the Manga set anyway...

As a fan of Ghost in the Shell, it makes perfect sense to check out the manga. I personally find it to be rougher than some of the anime adaptations but it's unique enough that I still found it a very interesting read.

I feel a ravenous compulsion to do a deep dive as a Neuroscientist and Manga/Comic creator into this work. Try to break down some of the genius things all too often missed. It may be my background? But this work is/was Prophetic with unique insights.
I'm ex-US military too. So I very much appreciate the satire on government interventions, corporate rule and US IMPERIALISM, Military Industrial Complex etc. Shiro demonstrates the problems in "US Empire" and "NATO spies" and "Western Imperialism" very often. Does it with incredible accuracy with what happens today. Also have many "hacker" friends at Raytheon. Accurate there too.

Nine times out of ten the source material is preferable to the adaptation, but Ghost in the Shell is that 1/10 when it isn't. This is a very nice release though, more manga needs to be released with these larger page sizes.
