Step 1: Wait for steam sale in June. No need to pay $35 for a game that is basically an Attila overhaul.
Step 2: Wait for Divide et Impera, Radious, etc. to fix all the issues with unit rosters, battle mechanics, etc.
Step 3: Whatever you do DON'T PRE-ORDER! This nonsense just needs to stop already...
Basically, to me, it seems that CA is just rushed to push something out the door and doesn't really matter what it is. It is nice to see that they are making strides with the actual strategy portion of the game (diplomacy, politics, family tree, etc.), and not just the tactical part on battles. They SHOULD be doing both and not rushing a launch date, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Luckily there are plenty of talented modders that can tweak both the strategic and tactical aspects of the game. What we could really use next is an AI overhaul, it seems that this has been completely neglected since Rome II release. Also, as a suggestion, work on a new in-house engine, expensive as hell, but the investment will pay off if CA takes its time and does it right.
That's my two cents, and sorry about the ramble...
Hope you all found this early review/impressions video helpful. I'll be sure to keep you informed as I dive deeper into the game but it seems unlikely that many of my issues are likely to be addressed this late in the game. Also while I have you here please check out the latest Moments episode on the Nika Riots if you haven't already: ua-cam.com/video/Dm9mscL2qHU/v-deo.html it seems like it didn't get the same exposure as others : (
Invicta Thanks for going crazy in-depth for an early access review.
It is much appreciated. From what I’ve heard the game isn’t finished, correct?
Would it be possible, as someone able to contact CA, for you to bring these issues to them? Maybe request for them to make the Vikings a bit more “Viking” like. Also maybe tell them you’ve gotten only negative comments in regards to the inability to use longships on rivers. Maybe if enough people, and especially UA-camrs with direct contact with CA to hand together and voice the same concerns instead of everyone making their own video and talking about what they want changed.
I think that if you, and other UA-camrs were to come together and decide on say 5 changes everyone agrees on a absolutely necessary it could really make the difference.
Invicta also while I agree with your comments on the historical aspects that were lacking, let’s not forget that after a decent period of time, the Danish Vikings stopped the constant raising and instead settled down and integrated into society. After a certain point once DaneLaw was implemented, many Vikings stopped going back and forth and just stayed put in Britannia opting to take tribute and land over pillaging, looting, and enslaving. After a while the Vikings became farmers and merchants.
Also not every Viking had longships and there weren’t as many ships as we sometimes think. Ships are expensive, and many times the ships needed a noble or a rich Dane to finance the building of the ship.
Also I’m not disagreeing with your points, just offering potential reasons as to why some things are the way they are in the game. And hopefully these things will be added or will be much more important later on in the game.
It is a HUGE, absolutely MASSIVE letdown that we won’t have any contact with Scandinavia, especially Denmark (at some point Denmark-Norway) considering Denmark essentially shaped Britannia during the Viking Age.
And while Denmark shaped Britannia IN Britannia (with danegeld and such), a lot of the influence came directly from Denmark and Sweden and the politics being played out in Scandinavia had a major impact on what happened and influenced events in Britannia.
It will be a major missed opportunity and a complete shame if none of our suggestions are taken into considering. I don’t expect these changes to all be completed before release, but hopefully they will implement patches to add this historically crucial stuff in.
would be nice if there were trade routes with the viking homeland like in empire, napoleon and shogun 2
I was hoping for something along those lines
I can't stand that they still have transports in the game, they need to go back to the old system of embarking troops onto ships. Give navies a function, especially in a game centred around Vikings. Also i still don't understand why they don't let you give/demand territory in diplomacy, it adds a whole new dynamic which has been sorely lacking.
Respect man. You're honest even though you had to send it to CA.
They should have made the Pennines a natural barrier. Historically the Pennines slowed down both the Saxon and Viking expansion into Northwestern England and the Pennines to this day aren't built on and is still an imposing landscape which dominates much of Northern England. The Pennines historically split the counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire and to this day people from Yorkshire or Lancashire will often say to the other 'you were born on the wrong side of the Pennines'
I can't understand why they didn't include it in the map, it's like not having the Thames on the map, it just doesn't make sense and it would make for interesting campaigns and not to the mention the battles on the unique moorland landscape with large rolling hills. They look like the slightly included a small part of Pennines in very northern England, but it's a tiny fraction on how long the Pennies stretch and it doesn't look like a natural barrier
Its quite weird that the viking player is incentivised to attack the Britons and remain at peace with the English. Historically it was the other way around.
08:02 - “this little island” - you are going to have the Manx on you now...
I went back in time to rename it Viking Island
That estate mechanic is something I really, really love for roleplay purposes!
yes it did seem like something so intuitive and useful it should be in all future titles (tweaked to be period appropriate)
God I hate that defection mechanic. Why can't the general take his army with him? I feel that just breaks immersion and makes the game easier for no reason.
yea in reality no general would defect if he didn't already have the support of his troops. A general defecting should be even more dangerous than a rebellion because your general has an army with him and is provisioned already and will strike at once. People will pay attention to the loyalty of their generals much more if this how it worked...
He did mention that civil wars are crushing as is, so this mechanic is probably to make it less punishing.
+Jaron Ehlers
I see no reason it shouldn't be harder by having the entire army defect.
Or randomize it and have roughly half defect.
+Truth
Agreed on that. It shouldn't be where it's just a straight copy.
I liked in FoTS how the European powers made their presence known through trade, military units, etc. Scandinavia and Frankia should have felt like this.
Best review I've seen so far. I've been through so many videos for the past few hours. Finally a reviewer that actually knows about the game
the rivers are a key thing for me as a HUGE VIKINGS/DANISH fan i was hoping that would maybe be a sppecific mechanic or somehting for viking factions only to be able to sail upstream would allow for some interesting tactics
They should had improved the Real-Time Battle.
This is what makes total war different from other games.
I feel like this game isn’t necessarily centred around Vikings, it’s about the Saxon and Celtic realms
Good and honest review brother!! always straight up and thats how we want it!
Thanks for the honest and brilliant review, my favourite youtuber by far !
Wow, this sounds a lot more lazy and half-hearted compared to how much CA were hyping it up. Some HUGE features that are missing here.
Tbh I've only watched a handful of your videos but your still 100% the dude I go to online for Total War reviews cause you know what's up
Lots of siege battles, very few field battles
Best review on the block
I love to hear your honest reaction.
I hope CA give you early access to Three Kingdoms as well and I want to hear your honest reaction again.
Glad to see the diplo improvements, excited to see this depth in other newer titles
They probably rushed too much on Thrones and should have released it later. They are doing ROME II:DLC, WARHAMMER 2, and 3 KINGDOMS at the same time along with this.
Nice review. Looks exciting and I will probably pick it up, but I've definitely been hoping for more historical immersion moving forward. Thank you for bringing up things like longships, diplomacy outside the map (France, Normandy, Denmark and Norway) and the bizarre amount of time it takes to cover distance in these games: Sailing from London to York would take about 5 days and marching would take about 2 weeks. Instead, going by sea often takes longer than marching for some reason.
Thanks for making this
Seems like a lot of unique things were added on top of the Old Mechanics of Attila/Rome without changing the core mechanics of the game. Playing FOTS right now and though it doesn't add in as many features as this Saga, I think it changed the core mechanics and battles of Shogun 2 in a way that made it feel very unique. Sadly missing that feeling here. Attila battles with a fresh coat of paint.
Hard to add repeating rifles and ironclads to the Viking Age, to be honest.
Can you tell me those many added new features ? None of them are new at all.
Broreale Were you deprived of oxygen as a baby?
Connor Hamilton were you?
Broreale nope
Awh man. I was actually looking forward to this game. :(
Very disappointed, not throwing my money at those used up animations and poorly designed mechanics.
Good job man! 10+
Very detailed map @ :55 good display of the resources needed to fuel a large army and your provinces.
It seems CA have listened... but still got lazy. I was getting excited but I think not being able to sail rivers in a map as scaled up as this is a deal-breaker for me. Still, they seem to have put a lot more effort in to this than I expected
can you genocide settlements like in medieval 2
Thanks very much brother for your excellent commentary . Ive played every single game this mob have ever made and I guess its hard for them to bring to life our hopes and desires in their games. I want to say out of all their games I played Attila the least . I wanted to be a Viking Lord and conquer the World but just could not get into it. So in a week or two I will jump into my pre order hoping to get my Viking buzz again. Must say I'm a bit worried. One positive is the price. Only around $40 in Australia. I guess i'm worried about the fun factor not being there.
Thanks again for your honesty and the Love you have for the Gen-ere .
May we cross Swords on the field one day . .
I still hope CA will one day realize that BATTLES are what set TW apart from other strategy titles and not the campaign map mechanics; when they'll realize that maybe this franchise will regain its popularity and vibe. Immersive battles in a historically accurate environment, with fighting mechanics fit for the type of warfare of the period is what I craved for and what I received when buying older titles. Keep up the constructive criticism Oakley; maybe us fans, together with TW youtubers, can still bring this franchise back to its roots and to what made it shine !
The game looks gorgeous. I really liked those animations around the 02:00 mark and the like, but I'm not a big Total War player, so I don't really know what to think of the rest of it.
When date of release of this clone of Attila ?
store.steampowered.com/app/712100/Total_War_Saga_Thrones_of_Britannia/
*What will happen if it rain snow , Do we gone lose the the game*
Can we exchange territories like we could in Napoleon TW? Use to love this.
What are the constructions besides the wedge and the castle shields?
Will it support Ultra wide monitors (21:9)?
Why the hell are people surprised that this is essentially a big DLC? It's going to be 40 bucks to start, (36 technically), and will just go down from there. People were expecting a full on fresh release without the full on fresh release price? lol
CA already said it would be apart from the main series, even named this game differently and changed the price point. Don't know why people are complaining it's DLC when CA signalled it would essentially be that and charged the appropriate price for this kind of standalone-expansion-DLC thing
Did I hear right, that there is a "doom" mechanic at the end of the game, just as with Attila and Warhammer 2, where a big army spawn in the end, that you have to defeat?
Skipping this title
Same here, and 'ello Irathi :p
26:30 Basically Cnut and William the Conqueror. Although it's a little odd that you'd get them simultaneously when those two invasions were actually separated by 50 years
should I get this one or Attila?
They lost touch after the last Medieval
I truly love what they have done with Warhammer and what Rome 2 finally became
Rome 2 became ok after a while, but it took them over a year and much of the best stuff came from the community. I'm a history buff, so I stayed clear of Warhammer :) If you say it's good I believe you. Let's hope the China thing turns out better then this :)
Warhammer and Warhammer 2 are by FAR amazing games.... So many options mechanic battles etc etc
Shogun 2 was pretty good but empire and rome 2 were disasters imo
Hey, how is performance optimization of this game?
@Invicta I remember Attila had bad fps. Did you experience any of that, and if so. If there was a change, how was the difference?
With a tinge of ignorance, I'll say that I'm more positive to Thrones, because it might adds mechanics that the modders can use.
How are the turn times in this game? Turn times are killing me in Total War Attila Grand Campaign.
I bought the game recently, i had to agree on all the remarks you said. I bought Rome remasted and then Thrones of Britannia and to me the Rome remastered felt better game.
Jesus i bloody loathe that shiny effect everything seems to have in battles, not to mention the atrocious unit collision.
Under faction features it says Ragnar is swedish. What the hell he was a dane :S not it that it matters that much, its just modern nation concepts, but if they really need to categorize him, call him a dane that makes much more sense dammit.
But Ragnarr's father, Sigurðr, was originally a Swedish king before becoming king of Denmark and Sweden.
This whole game just seems so lazy from CA, looks like Rome 2, let alone Atilla. Not gonna buy this even if it's on sale. Which is a shame, because I'm a Brit and would have loved to play a proper total war game set in the British isles. I really feel that CA have been recycling waaaay way too many assets, textures, animations, and gameplay mechanics from previous games. It makes me less and less excited for each new title. Also, how old is the engine they are producing these games on? Calvary charges looked awful in Rome 2 - that came out 5 years ago.
I hate to be so negative, but I can't get excited for anything they are making, including warhammer 3 and three kingdoms China, because I feel like the improvements made over previous games are lackluster to say the least.
P. Sinnet I agree about CA being lazy and trying to extract the maximum amount of cash from their audience for basically the same product over and over again. I liked the warhammer games but this is looking like the CA of old (rome 2 and attila) and I won't support them in this. Btw if they were a more ambitious studio, maybe they would have by now worked out how to do a modern war like game (having large number of troops like in total war games) or at least WW era games. Another couple of years of total war games at the same rate and even their newer fans will start getting tired of playing the same thing over and over again with a fresh coat of paint.....
I personally don't really think that a modern total war title is possible (but wouldn't be against one happening), and would rather see innovation in other areas, particularly in updating the engine.
Tragically though there are still plenty of people who believe in brand loyalty and will buy CA's games no matter what. Call them fanboys or whatever you want, but at the end of the day, they hurt the industry and they stifle creativity.
*Also, I really liked Warhammer 1, but was disappointed by the lack of changes and poor polish in its sequel - ie. the most expensive piece of dlc I've ever bought.
Grab Rome Total war 1 on steam. It regularly goes on sale for $2 CAD, then install darth mod and you can play as the brits.
P. Sinnet i
I'll keep on playing attila. Thanks for the review
Great insight on the game. Thanks for giving us valid opinions both positive and negative and then giving us CA'S response. That's really helpful!
Yes, an informed review.
Any optimizations for framerate? This is Attila's most glaring problem imo.
Overall this title will be a test of how far they can milk the community in future. Now expect DLC for DLC+ game...
Shieldwall combat should produce less casulties and be more push shove oriented with units getting pushed back under preasure and give ground instead of fighting to the last man on the spot.
This mechanic should have been present in Rome 2 also, you can't even reproduce battles like Cannae or Marathon without it.
No reaction regarding the recent blog?
I want to hear your assumption regarding the new campaign for Rome 2 though.
how about FPS, does it have FPS unlike Atilla?
Total War: Attila Reborn
I don't understand that Moders are the ones that actually step up for many of the visual and mechanics of games today. It's great....But I think that in a way it's a bad thing because developers get to put out a half assed game and they know moders will come in and fix it......without the devs having to pay.
I'll be giving this one a miss then. Thanks for the preview.
Question, does anyone know if there are in game cut scenes for agents and etc in this?
there are no agents in this game actually, their role has been rolled into the character retainer system
Good review. I wanted to give it a shot, but luckely ive seen this. Same battle style same campaign style with some beter mecanics. So again a no go. Really hope they start using a new engine in the short future.
Thank for this. I already was very sceptical for this game.
Dont want to spend a $50 on a Total war atilla DLC+ game.
I think they missed an opportunity with the shield wall as well. That was THE WAY to fight battles then. The two sides would form their shield walls and close on each other. The side with more troops had an advantage because their longer line could wrap around the edges of the other.
I would've liked to have seen the battles designed around this tactic, because typical open-field Total War battles weren't how it was done.
The Norsemen's use of the Boar's Snout (wedge formation) to break the shield wall is historical, but poorly implemented.
Great overview thank you, I for one am looking forward to playing this title- but I still wish (and strongly believe) they should come out with a TW game where everyone starts with a single territory. Maybe someday!
"Viking island" is the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 in "real life" interesting fact they have no speed limits on their roads outside the towns & they host a kind of death race on motorbikes every year. Called the Isle of Man TT. It's well worth watching. It's the most dangerous televised race in the world. Because it takes place on normal roads/streets. The top speed recorded was 206mph (or 332kph) I went a few years ago and you can get within reaching distance of the racers it's crazy.
Hi Invicta. Thank you for good content.
The upcomming Total War: Three Kingdoms is that going to be in the same series as this one? Will it be the same game mechanics?
Sorry to hear all this. I was looking forward to a TW game focused on the area and the period. I had my suspecions that it would be a bit of a superficial reskin of Attila. It sounds like it is exactly that and not much more. I might wait for a sale then :/
Do you think this would be a good purchase for someone who gave Attila a miss? I've played every other total war game except Attila.
i am 50/50 on thrones of Britannia, and i not a priority to me currently.
Would be better if the defecting force had 50% unit attrition as well as the original force, so it would be as if the army split in half. Rather than a mirror force of the army spawns but with evil moustaches.
Has the lack of agents bothered you?
I am not particularly missing them or their spam
They crewed up time period and geographical domain. Rome 2 had a great scope of time and geography. Not some small isolated area such as the British Isles. Give us Medieval with all the mechanics which have developed since then and a fresher engine. Even Napoleon would be sick with how much progress was made due to the war hammer series (rifles, charges and cannons and such)
Im glad that there not making a huge story line, and keeping it more sandbox, the point of Total War is to be able to go off and do your own thing. Adding a very structured story line would ruin the feel that you are in charge and making decisions based on original events happening to you. An optional historical story line that you would be able to turn on or off would not be a bad idea though.
If I can run warhammer2 then will I be able to run this?
natty_the_great I'd have thought so as it's basically Attila which came out years ago. Then again this is CA, so at launch who knows
Rich Allsopp I can run attila ok but it's not as optimized as warhammer/warhammer2 and I get less than 60 fps on mixed high/ultra settings. So I am worried I might be able to run it but only at under 30 fps at quality settings
I may have missed this info but how many turns per year is it?
I believe it is 4
Ahh that's alright then, cheers pal.
Oh you dont know? Viking Longship is an upcoming DLC
are there any cultural or religion mechanics?
Isn't this basically the the same as age of Charlemagne but focused on Britain and set like a hundred years later
I think Saga is more focused on the campaign and less on the battles. Hence lack of new battlemaps.
As for the loyalty - wouldn't it be solved by taking away all the units for the problematic general? If they get a mirror army only when revolting they would still have zero units.
Hope for "Dream of Albion" theme
I think they're saving the mix of Warhammer mechanics for Three Kingdoms, which is what the historic titles need. I'm not a fan of the Shogun era. So this new game is just Attila with new mechanics. I watched all the other TW previews, and your video had so much information. Cheers.
Why are they using Anglicised names for Viking settlements?
Many of these settlemends were _founded_ by Vikings and few of them changed name at all..
www.yorkshiredialectsociety.org.uk/viking-place-names/
Edit:
Let me rephrase: It appears that areas on the east coast has not changed name properly once occupied by the Vikings. (And some places vice versa; Was Veisafjord under Viking occupation at present?)
So overall a little disappointing. 2 things make or break a TW title:
1: Do you feel like playing the "trademark TW game".
2: do you like the setting.
Britannia Saga is a definate YES on #2 for me, but after this "review", I am starting to think that, I am not really in the mood for #1
I don't get it, what was CA thinking with this? This game looks so goddamn boring, they should have made Age Of Charlemagne bigger and more expensive, and not this shit...
pretty much hit the spot, people who were working on this boring game should have rather FINALLY add Norsca and tons of RoR for TWW2
Can't believe we're w8ing Norsca and next TWW2 dlc's just so this clone of Attila would release in April...
David Kubík rntirely separate teams that are working on that you idiot, they come in may along with the next lord pacl
Don't even bother.
TWCenter is leaking again.
I am glad the new version of Divide and Conquer just came out so I don't have to buy this...
disappointed.
This game kind of has a bit of a game of thrones feel. I could definitely see a game of thrones total war in the future, once the TV series if finished. A few changes to the political system and the way armies are raised and it would work very well. The Vikings army’s are not really the “proper” Vikings faction, they are a mix of Danes and Saxons. If you want more of a Viking feel then play as the Sea Kings.
I like the delays on expansion. Complaining that you can't attack all the time, to me I understand what they are doing from a game design perspective. It keeps the game from getting samey and boring, samey battles every turn.
It’s dumb how only 4 turns make a year. They should have extended it to 6 or 8 turns.
I can't believe that Thrones got more credit than Three Kingdoms
hey bro this is great video, much love. except this only feels like it should be a DLC for attila. nothing is extraordinarily new and some of other comments really relate to it.
Shogun 2 is still total war's best value product ... Rome 2, for years! was a joke. it's now playable but with all the DLC and sudo standalone extensions it's fairly poor value by comparison. FOTS was a good extention ... Atilla should have been apart of rome2 and this game appears the same.
CA needs to just develop an engine and let users drive the games
You nay sayers won't get me down. I'm still excited as hell to get in and play this game. And yes I did prepay =P
I'm just gonna save my money and play 'The Last Kingdom' mod for Medieval 2. More polished and authentic than Thrones of Recycled Attlia.
