Love it one of my favorite games actually around 500 hours into it. I would have loved an expansion with Scandinavia and Northern France. My dad's grandma's family came from Denmark way back and "immigrated" to England around that time from their pirate base in northern france given to the vikings by that surrender nation's King Charles. Attila is one my favorite all time games also.

That said most Total War Players I know are waiting for Creative Assembly to get over the Warhammer fantasy series so they can buckle down and start work on Empire II or Medieval III.

First of all, I think TOB has some of the best, most interesting and fun to play settlement designs. I think they are severely underrated.
Unfortunately this is held back by the fact that the AI is irreparably stupid. They literally just run at you. It makes for painfully repetitive battles. A positive here is that the actual animations, and unit interactions when in combat feel very good, and strikes a nice balance between having defined lines of battle, and areas or times where it can get a little brawly makes the combat at least visually, pretty entertaining. I remember me and my friend doing a co op campaign and I was spectating his siege defense, and towards the end when he routed the enemy, one of his longbows died from the walls and struck one of the fleeing guys in the neck, and the animation and sound was *chefs kiss*. However I have had only one memorable battle in this game and it was because I somehow took my 450 units and defeated an army of nearly 2000. I basically used the Roman technique of rotatating my infantry line to keep them fresh, while my archers slowly picked away at their back line and I calvary sniper their general. It wasn't even the hardest battle I've had in total war, but that's the only memorable one in TOB sadly. Idk why we cant have a game with the settlements of TOB, the battles of shogun 2 and medieval 2, and the politics (with some work) of Rome 2.

I like thrones and have well over 100 hours, but i only actually played in 2020 well after i bought the game as when i bought it it's features were confusing and new to me. So in essence i bought it, hated it, didn't play, played, then loved it. One thing i will say is that it can get monotonous as much of the factions have the exact same playstyle(shield wall and two or three archer units with maybe one or two cav), save when norse factions occasionally have long axes. The sieges are super easy and can be cheesed as you can simply have a unit break through a gate on the opposite side of the settlement of where your main army is, and have them walk to and take the town square. It's a beautiful and fun game with huge potential and gives an in depth look into the early middle ages and especially the history of the british isles, but unfortunately it's potential will probably never be fulfilled due to CA's policies and the way they make their games
Edit: I also love how archers were given a bit of a boost with the ability to do critical damage; i felt like they were actually powerful and loved archers in this game. I do wish they had normal sized archer units tho
another edit: I genuinely love thrones and think it's design and general style is the direction total war should be going in. Bigger maps, realism, etc. And there were huge quality of life improvements. The one part i don't like is that there wasn't more unit variety (don't get me wrong there was alot but i wish there was more) and that it felt repetitive.

ToB was pretty great, but it suffered badly from folks not recognizing that it was a Saga title and not a full release. It used innovative mechanics, had great sieges, and allowed the Welsh to kick out the heathen Germans and Norse and reunite the Romano-British people under a latter-day Arthur. It also didn't offer all that much replayability due to the close focus on a small geographic area with limited factions. The end-game crisis of a random invasion was pretty solid, too. It shared a lot of good features with Attila, actually, and suffered in some similar ways to bad hype and lack of further support. I'd rank it as my fourth favorite TW game, after Attila, Medieval 2, and Barbarian Invasion, and actually ahead of the Warhammer games (which are probably the most replayable, but aren't actually the best experience).

One of the biggest gripes for this game is the lack of garrisons for minor settlements. Personally, I rather like the change because it forces you to build small, highly mobile armies as a support system to your full-stack field armies. While your Field Army slowly bounces from strongpoint to strongpoint, your mobile forces harass the enemy countryside or defend your borders. It makes you plan your next moves and try to anticipate what the AI is cooking up.

    • @Arcaryon
      @Arcaryon Рік тому +1

@@TheRealBrotherLance I think it’s sad how many people miss the good this game does for the franchise via actually having distinct lands that you need to mange differently as opposed to the same generic „min max“ towns.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind optimising, I just dislike it being only one way to do it while here, I actually had a reason to think about the settlements and if lead to much more interesting battles because just loosing a militarised clone metropolis is one thing, actually having to take villages seriously however made loosing them worth paying attention to and that forced me to interact with the tech tree aka fast & cheaper recruitment vs. many big elite armies that take longer to replenish and overall, I think people never got to that part because the release was just… Bad.
Even without mods, this game has a „soul“.

From what I read and the people that I spoke to a lot of the best mechanics from those earlier total war games were suggested by or developed by that Australian studio. Actually Thrones of Britannia is really good ever since they fixed the issues and provided decent updates. It has a very good rpg system (whatever you do affects the skills of your generals and politician, it has the BEST audio features in the entire franchise: The chants of the soldiers, the audio of marching soldiers, the epic soundtrack that gives you the feeling that it is a life or death battle..etc To be fair thrones of britannia could have become the jewel of the franchise like 3K but unfortunately the developers decided to not include various missing core features in my opinion.. No forced marches, no ambushes, no intricate trading system, spy network, assassination, political intrigue...etc
On the other hand like I mentionned, I see myself re-installing this game every now and then just to re-experience the EPIC battles with fantastic immersive audio and feeling.
Lastly there are three excellent mods that will completely change the game for the better:
    1) 1066 you can play as the Norman Duke William and invade England have a great battle against Harold Godwinson.
    2) Second mod is called Shieldwall. It absolutely changes the entire game making it far more immersive, realistic and improves various features.
    3) Radious mod: Fantastic overhaul mod like Shieldwall but different, just check it out.
Thrones of Britannia gets a 7.5/10 for me

Thrones is probably my favourite of all the Total Wars, I'm not really sure why all the hate?
Maybe people from outside the UK aren't interested in the setting?

My [personal] advice to enjoy this game is to avoid campaign and play custom battle (it has my best personal favorite custom battle systems).
and also I've tried playing the campaign and it gets so boring. I never play that mode.

I'm not sure if i'm bias because I love the time period but I loved the game. The only issue was the way the last enemy general of a faction would ignore you besieging his capital to take a minor settlement of yours.

the grand campaigns are fun but 90% of the factions start with 20% of the map so its kinda crappy for someone like me who enjoys building up a weak faction to the strongest

Just bought this as it was on sale on HB. Pleasantly surprised with it. It didn't really interest me off the rip and I heard some of the issues that were plaguing the game so I kind of forgot about it honestly. I own every TW game and this was the only one I was holding out on. Glad I finally got around to it. I like the food/economy system in this iteration a lot. Unit comp is average but the gameplay is pretty fun and the sieges are excellent! I will say though that I'm not a huge fan of the settlement system mostly as there are no garrisons in minor settlements. This makes it really annoying to fully eradicate someone as many times I've been chasing just a general around my land as he occupies the smaller settlements. Kind of tedious but it is what it is.

The blood stuff is actually so they can sell the game as PEGI 16. If the blood was in the main game, it would be 18.

What have they changed/added in the last couple of years. I thought it was pretty much abandoned. Last and only DLC was 3 years ago. Last patch was nearly 3 years ago...I see now its on sale on Steam 75% off.

I actually like thrones. It was the TW that got me really into TW. I am a massive fan of the time period which always helps of course. Keep in miind I don't play a lot of campaign on this and I hear most of the complaints are with this.

When it comes to Total War it really is a shame that their fantasy game titles are just so much better than the historical titles. Even myself I would say that Warhammer 2 is my favourite Total War at the moment, even though I would like to say titles such as Rome (1 & 2) and Three Kingdoms are just as good.
It would be cool to see Alex evaluate the Total Wars into a tier list and get some more in depth thoughts on the positives and negatives of all the titles throughout their years of release. Video idea possibly?
