    Congratulations, that was a great come back - in very challenging conditions.
    I've been playing more doubles recently, it's such a different game compared to singles.
    It's so much about positioning, angles, controlled shots rather than power and of course a lot of volleys.
    The player in the black shirt looks like a very experienced doubles player, has incredible hands at the net (example 22:57) and great anticipation for poaches.
    With 3 full sets and the new doubles statistics tool I have a ton of data to share.
    Looking at the point history chart (on my site) TT/Boss had a slow start, only winning 2/14 points.
    From what I'm reading and seeing on youtube instructions the team that can come to the net first usually wins the point. Boss tried that with his S&V, but he didn't do much damage because the other team either lobbed over Troll or dipped the return to Boss' feet making for a difficult volley, for example 17:07
    Overall Boss won less than half of his service points (20/43) and half of his service games (3/6).
    Troll did better, winning 24/35 service points and 5/6 service games. His deep topspin rally ball forced a lot of short balls that Boss could clean up and Boss also poached well putting pressure on the returner, for example 19:08
    In the 2nd set Alta had 7 double faults and 7 return errors which helped shift the momentum over.
    In the 3rd set Boss and Troll got more active at the net winning 24/35 net points vs 6/10 for Alta
    I think Troll could poach a bit more by anticipating when there is a weak shot coming, for example 15:15 or 23:12.
    13:58 was funny when Troll was looking at Boss' back because he didn't switch.
    That topspin lob at 15:04 was sooo good. Troll has such a good topspin forehand, an offensive lob like that could frustrate many doubles opponents.

      I was hoping no one would notice 13:58. That was my fault as I didn’t tell Boss to switch. Thanks for sharing point examples too- I need to do better with poaching. When partner is serving, he should rarely have to hit a volley in the center of the court. Unfortunately Boss didn’t have that luxury when I was at the net and that may have led to him not being able to hold consistently.

      @@TennisTrollChannel you’re good to not blame your partner. But I see and experience this routinely in dubbs. You often don’t have time to say switch nor is it necessary usually. Your momentum is taking you onto Boss’ side plus you’re hitting a ball directly behind him. That should be an automatic switch for him. Most players won’t recognize to switch though, not just him.

      Thanks for watching so intently UDR and for the thoughtful assessment! Both teams had a guy who was more aggressive at the net and one that hit heavy ball from the back to set the partner up. Black shirt was that guy for them. He came out red hot and everything he hit felt like a winner.
      It’s well known that I need a lot of net help and movement to hold my service games:)
      Troll was hitting heavy and consistent this match. It was hard for them to handle and I was simply cleaning up the mess.

      @arvinsingh3637 2 роки тому

      @@Michael-Boyer oh that was 100% my fault not to switch on that. Go where your momentum takes you and the player behind will adjust, whether switch is called or not. TT is very very good at anticipating and covering behind a moving net partner.

    • @Michael-Boyer
      @Michael-Boyer 2 роки тому

      @@arvinsingh3637 Sure, we’ve all failed to do this at one point. Usually what I see/experience is in the 1 up/1back formation where the back player’s momentum takes him onto his partner’s side. Sometimes he’ll have time to recover back but sometimes now. His partner needs to recognize what’s happening.

    They look like a doubles team and you look like two singles players playing doubles. The first few games seems to indicate they would win comfortably (clearly better coordination and court coverage), but some how you came back and won. Maybe the wind picked up and you could adjust better than them?

      I notice that in some of your serve-volley especially on the bh side you tend to jam yourself by running straight into the ball ( 0:52 for example ). Maybe split step a bit earlier and position to the side of the ball flight path and put some shoulder turn into the volley?

  • @jhanhky

    Troll: do you and Boss usually play your forehand sides on the return? Most college/pro dubs team now play on their off-sides (righty ad, lefty deuce) to have their fh volleys and overhands on middle balls. Both of you have solid backhands to set the point up on the return, so maybe worth trying in the future for finishing more net points.

    • @TennisTrollChannel
      @TennisTrollChannel  2 роки тому

      I agree. There are advantages to having forehands in the middle. By doing so, teams avoid difficult shots like the thumbnail/cover photo for this video. I usually let my partner pick as I’m equally bad on both sides. However, I did take a few lessons from a Wimbledon dubs champ when I was in college and he recommended I play deuce side based on how I played. I wish I had asked for more details as I wonder what he saw that led to that conclusion.

    • @jhanhky
      @jhanhky 2 роки тому +1

      @@TennisTrollChannel Maybe from the fact that you can be the steady "set-up guy" on the deuce court to help create ad-out opportunities for a more attacking partner on the ad court. It would make total sense in a righty-righty team, where your partner would have his forehand in the middle.
      The Bryans might've been the innovators of the forehands in the middle arrangement. There's some full matches of theirs on UA-cam. Craig O'Shannassey has done research on how often doubles points are won/lost through the middle and one of his presentations can be found on here too.

    • @TennisTrollChannel
      @TennisTrollChannel  2 роки тому

      @@jhanhky Craig has an excellent presentation on what players/pros should be practicing 0-4 shots rather than being consistent. I'll look for the dubs presentation. thanks for sharing.

    • @arvinsingh3637
      @arvinsingh3637 2 роки тому +1

      IMO…At this level, if you’re looking to hit quality returns and maximize forehand’s hit (esp on 2nd serve returns) then playing the forehand side makes sense. The forehands in the middle only works if you’re going to be aggressive at the net and take over the middle, and puck off some floaters. Otherwise the advantage is lost, esp with the slight disadvantage on serve returns. So I think it depends on a players style and mobility.

      @@TennisTrollChannel i saw you make a forehand approach trying to do it heavy with the wind in your favor, instead of just putting it in game and letting the wind to his Job.
