Thank you for the video. I went to Chinese school 50 years ago and now I’m learning to communicate with my old friends in Chinese via iPhone. Your video gave me the idea how to text in Chinese, though for me it’s faster if I just talk to the phone. But sometimes the character does not come out right, so I still have to choose the right character. During pandemic, I recopied 6500 words in Chinese dictionary and it really brought back a lot of memories.❤
A method that I personally use is called double pinyin or shuangpin (双拼). It basically makes it so that every key has a double purpose as an inital and final sound. There are a few different layouts, but in the one I use (shuangpin++) for example the "i" key acts as "sh" in the initial position, but as "i" in the final position, or the "t" key acts as "t" as an inital, but as "eng" as a final. Since every character is written with only two keystrokes, there's never any confusion. This means a sentence like "你们明天有时间吗?" (nimen mingtian you shijian ma) is written like "nimrmqtjypijma". This admittedly looks really confusing at first and it does indeed take some getting used to, but I got the hang of it much, much faster than I anticipated. I've even been asked multiple times by Chinese people on apps like Hellotalk how I can type so fast. It's worth trying at least.
我很喜欢双拼 I'm trying it out right now!! Very cool. I see there's many different layouts. How did you pick PlusPlus as opposed to Ziranma or something else?

@@GraceMandarinChinese it’s probably because I speak Cantonese fluently- most Hong Kong people do not know how to type Chinese correctly! I can type Chinese faster than English now !
Literally only looked this up because of the ü sound. I was figuring most of this by myself because I like to jump in headfirst like a madman, but every word that involved ü was a pain in the ass. Thank you for the video, you are a gentleman and a scholar!
Wow, thanks for sharing all this info, and that’s such a cool tip to just use the initials! I never knew phones had shortcuts like that. This video made me look into some more phone tricks. I only now learned about the period shortcut (double-tapping the space bar to put a period and space at the end of a sentence.) This shortcut just needs to be enabled in the the phone’s keyboard settings. Another trick is to hold down the space bar until it “clicks” and it enables you to precisely drag the cursor around the screen. This doesn’t relate to typing speed, but it helps when trying to select in between two characters/letters within a typed word. Example: selecting between the “i” and “s” in “is”, or between the 電 and 影 in 電影. I think these should work for most language keyboards. I’m just not sure if they would work with all operating systems.
It's so interesting that you can type out full sentences (common ones) with mostly initial sounds as if it's text speak in English. Are there popular texting abbreviations for Chinese?
Your video is helpful for typing on computer & mobile, m new in Taiwan’ & m learning chinese in the University. Hopefully i could be on this stage soon to type my next comment in Mandarin for you.
In the double-spelling input method, the sound and vowel of Chinese character pinyin are each represented by an English letter, that is, typing a Chinese character, just press the keyboard 2 times. The mainstream double spell solutions include Xiaohe double spell, Microsoft Pinyin 2003, Intelligent ABC, Pinyin plus, Purple Light double spell, Natural Code and so on. The main difference between these schemes lies in the key arrangement of vowels and auxiliary codes.
Not sure whether that's possible in every Zhuyin IME, but at least with the one I use, I can also set it so I don't have to type out the tones. Though it's probably still a good idea for learning.
so happy to find your channel 😊. As of know since I am just starting to learn, i think i will just try to use pinyin input method. Later, after knowing more word , I l'll try to learn that zyuyin method
谢谢你 Grace ! I have learned the Simplified writing system Therefore I use pinyin. Also pinyin was easy for me to learn as it is similar to the English alphabet. Very useful video by the way 👍 👍
Hey Grace, which is the name of the song that you put in 0:50-1:01, 1:30-1:44, 5:01-5:25? i look in the description and checked all the songs but could not find this one
One thing I've never quite been able to work out is if there is a way you can type a word using 注音輸入法 on Mac if you aren't sure of the tone, or whether you just need to guess until you find the right tone.
Thank you! I don't even know how to read that much. ( I can only read the word "sheep" and 1 2 3 in chinese ) But I'll keep learning. Thank you so much again.
太棒了! I use both pinyin and zhuyin. Ask me how. These are phonetic keyboards. There are also the components keyboards. Cangjie input is amazing on GBoard for Android. On Windows 10 Microsoft Changjie is failing with some simplified . Cangjie input should cover all characters, conveniently also Cantonese
One more tip I found out for pinyin the computer (probably works for zhuyin as well) is that when typing two character combinations, if you hit left arrow twice so the cursor is before the first character, and then hit down arrow, you get choices for both characters at the same time. For example, if you type "shijian", using this method, you can then choose between 時間 and 事件, without having to scroll through the many, many characters for shi. Both 時間 and 事件 will appear near the top of the list. Maybe I didn't explain it well, but just try typing a two character combination and hit left arrow twice before hitting down arrow, and you'll see what I mean.
I want to know how you got your PC to show the Chinese characters. Mine doesn't know squat about Chinese characters. A program or something you did not mention?
I'd like to ask what program or computer you were using in typing the Chinese characters that you can use automatic or predictive text. I can't seem to do that with MS Word. I tried both the Simplified and Traditional using pinyin input method.
Hello. Thank you for your videos. ONE thing: suddenly hanzi options are not appearing when I type pinyin on MS word. What should I do? Did I accidentally hit some key combination? Deleted and reinstalled Chinese keyboard, but no difference.
What is the best keyboard app for android for typing in Chinese? Any recommendation? Gboard is not good at all. Unfortunately, that is the preinstalled app on my phone.
Actually, Windows already has different keyboard languages. Here are the steps to getting the Chinese Pinyin keyboard: 1: go to Settings 2: select Time an Language 3: click Language 4: when you scroll down there should be a plus symbol with "add language" next to it. click add language 5: in the searchbar type chinese 6: click on Chinese (Simplified, China) 7: click next 8: click on download and wait for it to finish Now you have the Chinese keyboard! Whenever you want to type in chinese keep the windows icon on you laptop pressed and press once on the spacebar. A little window should appear on the right side of you screen which shows your languages. To quickly switch between English and Chinese press shift once. ( please note that you are typing the simplified characters. If you want to use traditional characters just reply and I'll help you!) Hope this helps!
Do you think typing in zhuyin is actually faster than in pinyin, or viceversa? I type in both and, despite I type faster on pinyin because I'm used to it, I think if I practice some more in zhuyin I could type faster. What do you think? BTW, great video!
Hi grace your videos are helping us a lot, and I personally love them, but can you speak hokkien (Taiwanese) , it's my ancestral language, but it's hokkien from Xiamen, an also what are differences between these two (xiamen, taiwanese), I know it's far from the topic, but I just wanna know l, anyways love your videos
Every time I try to type in Mandarin, I get something completely different. For example, when I type nihao, my doc gives me 夕白人. I don't even get the options for the correct characters, the options are for completely different characters. Does anyone know what is going on?
But most people learning Mandarin don't have a keyboard with zhuyin symbols on them. So are you supposed to just memorize which key goes with which character?
In James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies, the Chinese woman was using a PC keyboard with only Chinese characters printed on the keys. Are those characters Chinese letters or complete words?
Does anyone know how to input by strokes? In phone it is possible, but in pc i don't know how to install it. I need to input chinese characters not chinese (i.e., it could be traditional characters or simplify characters or even japanese characters). It is better to input by strokes, becauase, what if one does not know the pinyin of the letter? What if you need to translate chinese letters from a paper and you do not know the pinyin of letters?, if you know to write, it is so easy.
You can type a word that includes the character you want, and then delete the extra character that you don't need. For example, if you want to type “权”, you can type "quan li" (权力) and then delete the character "力". I hope this helps! :)
@Xiao Jian I not familiar with pinyin so I'm not sure which is faster. Array 10 is good for single hand typing and lower the chance of hitting the wrong key.
That must be nine key input. The 26 letters are represented by nine numbers, from 1 to 9. When you want to input "nihao", just press 64426, it will display some choices , then you find "你好". Similarly, "xiexie" = 943943,谢谢. When you master it, it will become very fast
It could be based on the roman alphabet or it could be based on the 5 different strokes for Chinese characters, and they have the stroke orders memorized
