      You should see the welds on the underside of the flat deck! I’m guessing the thing was built 20 years ago by a farmer. I can’t complain though because it came with the truck and it works for now.

    Im not a welder, but i run my own small handyman business, and do various ranchwork etc. I sold my 06 cummins and now I rock an 06 f350 4x4 cclb dually with a 6.8 v10 GAS motor and a 6 speed manual. Truck does everything i need it to and i dont have to deal with all the headaches of having a diesel. Times are changing and if you dont live with a trailer hooked up 24/7 its getting harder and harder to justify a diesel.

    If you are ever in the market for another wire feeder, try out the Comparc suitcase. It's built well and a fraction of the cost of miller/Lincol. Nice rig

    that 6.2 is a good unit if you get a misfire make sure you replace ALL the coil packs or it will just keep doing it if you dont it will eventualy put a hole in a piston the coil packs at for run about 3000$ for all 16 of them (dual ingnition) installed

    Like myself, it seems you’ve had all the diesel fun you could afford. As far as the Lincoln 305G EFI, I just bought a new one back in June 2023. It’s my third Lincoln 305G (the previous two were carbureted). I still own the first one and it has 7650+ hours on it now. My second one, I put 3200 hours on and sold it for more than I paid for it. I love them with the exception that the EFI has an idling issue that hasn’t been resolved yet despite the fact that it’s been worked on twice by a Lincoln authorized shop. Welds great but it can’t figure out how to stay on low idle when at rest while hooked to my Lincoln LN-15 suit-case wire feeder if it’s on two 25’ leads. Does fine if you take one of the 25’ leads out and replace it with a 50 footer. Any ideas on that, leave them in the replies.

      @JTwelder.  5 місяців тому

      Yeah diesels just aren’t worth it for a welding rig. Thants awesome you put over 7k hours on a ranger! My 305 efi would only stay in high idle when hooked up to my LN-25 like yours but after a few test beads it started to idle down properly again. I think it was something to do with my LN and not the welder. Also half the time it idles up when I pull the trigger on the LN just to feed some wire out and the other half of the time it feeds wire without idle up.
      I just bought a miller trailblazer 302 air pak yesterday so I can’t wait to try that out!

    • @williamthomas9463
      @williamthomas9463 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the reply. Just so you know, my LN-15 worked flawlessly on both of my previous 305G carbureted machines.

      @@williamthomas9463 maybe the computer reads the signal from a ln25 differently on a 305efi and that why it idles differently.

    I run a 6.4 hemi. I haven’t had any issues yet. I use it as a welding rig and my tree service rig. I tow 4K-14k lbs all the time no problems. I see no reason to get any diesel that’s not a 12v Cummins. The new gas engines pretty much have the same or better power than 90s era diesels. New ones have more power but like you said emissions sucks. The newer ram 2500’s are rated about the same as the 2011 Chevy 3500s as far as GVWR.

    • @JTwelder.
      @JTwelder.  4 місяці тому

      Exactly! As long as your not constantly towing the gas trucks will be the best option.

    It’s nice to see that you are doing great after opening your own business 👍
    Is there any chance that you could possibly do a video about welding in the open air in a proper winter environment? I occasionally do that but if it’s below -5 degrees celsius it sucks 🙂 Starting from lens fogging and lack of suitable welder's cap that is warm and comfortable with a welding helmet, then going through suboptimal working/welding gloves and ending with an angle grinder which isn’t particularly happy about working in such conditions...not to mention those harsh winds when you start question your own clothing choices after a few minutes spent in a static pose.

      Yeah I might do a winter welding gear video. Some tips I can think of right now are to wear a respirator because it helps exhaust your breath out of your shield making your lenses fog up less. Also whenever I’m work outside I wear a neck buff who really helps against the wind.

    Nice Rig! Nothing Wrong with a Gasser, also Eliminates the problem of Misfuelling if both Welder and Truck are the same fuel type, Close Call with a few of our guys Misfuelling on a few service trucks for a company I used to work for.
    Really Curious about How involved the CWB Company Cert Process was. I already have the Actual Stick Structural All position Certs but curious about the Company certification part, I've never dealt with that before at all and it seems overwhelming to me so curious about it from someone who recently did it.
    I too am just a One man operation, but would like to jump into Structural Steel Stuff I constantly get asked about and offered.

      @JTwelder.  5 місяців тому

      Thanks! Yeah I love the gasser especially its -30 in the morning.
      Getting my company CWB certified was a lot of work and money. I spent about $7k over all and it cost $1650 a year to keep it plus whatever it cost you to retain an engineer. I had to take a week off to go take a supervisors course and hire an engineer to write me some procedures. It will pay itself off but overall it’s a really expensive process. I got it because I plan on hiring a few more welders and doing shutdowns.

    i will say watching both vehicles get set up you need a hoosier pole. the cage on the welder cart would have been a great start.

      I prefer reels over a Hoosier pole and I’m also hardy ever working close enough to my truck to use one, their more for pipeline guys. I can see how there are a must have if you’re a pipe welder though!

    Is there a reason mobil welders never work out of an enclosed utility bed? I always thought it would be nice to keep everything out of the weather, and you would still have toolboxes on the side to work out of...just a little curious. I do know those beds are expensive, so that coul obviously be a reason why

    • @JTwelder.
      @JTwelder.  5 місяців тому +1

      Some welders run them. You probably didn’t notice because their welding machine was tucked in and not visible. I’m actually looking for one right now.
      The main reason I don’t have one is because they’re hard to find with a cabinet that’s tall enough to fit my torch bottles. I’m still looking through.

    • @scrapmanindustries
      @scrapmanindustries 4 місяці тому

      The enclosed utility beds are super expensive. Even just the normal utility beds are pretty pricy at the moment. But to answer your question fully most pipe guys try to look cool more than they care about function. More of the heavy equipment or contractor type guys are running open top utility beds mostly. I was looking at an enclosed utility bed but would need a bigger truck and about $25-$30k for the bed alone. But like he said most guys that do run enclosed utility beds don’t advertise much and don’t care to make a UA-cam channel.

    In the process of building a thing called a meme... the little car got a snow plow welded on it and bent 2 3''x3''x1/4'' L channel sections 90 degrees 1 foot from the mount, then it broke the 1'' axles that got welded back together then it got a 600 pound full floater axle... now it has a 7kw 240 volt generator on a PTO to the 4.6 triton to the point that 1500rpm is 280 volt 75hz... for a old 225ac transformer... only needs 65amp 38v to attach a 5/32 7024 400f preheat on rod and base, PTO shaft off the alienator pully was ratter up to 5500 watt "120amp". the 3/16 6010's really do work filling poor fitment, 1/2'' gaps are nothing... but then its simply hard to get funds to go to school in Alberta, running on a structural MIG ticket from high school... was free, just had to sine up to the class. have a water jack that's 260ft deep with 4000lb of sucker rod in it but the above ground rod is cracked in half, someone reluctantly drilled a hole in it... so that needs to be fllled, tho it is 135amp to 165amp for welding 1'' to 2'' rod that works best... vertical rebar wonder... weld on or off of vehicle and the electrical back feed fries the ECU? see if it actually works before the pully howls on the belt. 7kw at 60hz would be near 9kw of start up before coming down to 60hz the whole 210amp 38 volt their to lite it off? "structural tack weld tests" fillets of start stops... cant go around a 1'' shaft on the inside, but if your at the vehicles GVRW something is going to brake after 500 miles... every bump passes the tensile elasticity yield limit slowly making it... tho an 8.8 axle let go making a thud like a 30-06 on its first let go, the 7018 patch cv axle was a few multiple smaller thuds at a double load limit as 1400lb when it was stated for 900lb... no motor's to turn the wheel's. DEF error... or the ethanol that's steam locking the injectors on the gas. floaters floating now... face off the 1.5" AAM shaft to 1-5/8th. like a boat, only floaters float. the ford 9" is an 8.8 with a Band-Aid.

      @JTwelder.  5 місяців тому +4

      Yes if I run a diesel I will definitely use less fuel! The reason for running a gas truck is they’re more reliable, cheaper to maintain/repair and easier/faster to fix which in the end is less expensive than running a newer diesel. Also the lead time and price on parts and repairs for newer diesel’s is ridiculous!
      My father in law had the same year truck but with the 6.7 power stroke. It got stuck in reduced power mode and needed the whole def exhaust system replaced. The parts were $4000 and the labour was $2000 but the kicker was the dealer had the truck for 6 weeks because they were waiting on parts. I can’t run a business when my truck is gone for 6 weeks!!! That’s what I have a gas truck!

      I love it so far! Starts great in extreme cold, has power when you need it and does about 10mpg loaded up which isn’t too bad. My 12 valve Cummins does 16mpg when loaded up with welding gear so they’re really not that far apart when it comes to fuel efficiency.
