I’d be interested in an installation video for sure. Thanks for the great video
We’ve got Atomi outdoor lights and recently broke one via a baseball (my sons very much like playing catch and even hitting a dense foam ball, which shattered a light and killed the string). These look like a great alternative.
I would also like to see a video on hanging patio light the right way!
Shane, I’m glad you broke down and testing these lights! I’m sure several of us are considering them for the summer backyard season.
showing how to hang string lights including what to buy would be handy for sure.
String lights - no strings attached - well played sir!
Definitely interested in any tips you have for hanging smart lights. These are definitely going on my “strongly considering” list. Really like the colors at night.
I’m interested in a video about how you installed them. Especially the black pole in the corner. I might use something similar to prevent squirrels from cutting the lights.
Thanks for the feedback!
Shane, I definitely would enjoy and watch a video on HOW to hang string lights. Great video too!
Noted. Thanks for the feedback! I'm working on that video now and should be available pretty soon!
@@ShaneCreates excellent - glad to hear! I’m about to put up string lights so I’m an interested party.
Yes, I would enjoy a video on how to hang string lights.
I will be more curious and excited to see the video on how you installed those lights and those poles etc., Also how you are powering them too.
Another good review Shane.
Those look like something that would be ideal for someone who’s adding lights. Can’t say that I would ‘upgrade’ to them from my current Dumb Lights with a Smart Outlet.
Thanks for the content.
Thanks for watching!!
UA-cam algorithm is so annoying I have been waiting for this video but your videos never come up in my feeds anymore just see this video because you referenced it in your latest video 🤯
oh dang, that is frustrating. Yea I get fed videos all the time from people I'm not even subscribed to. I think the best thing you can do is turn on ALL notifications for a specific channel, and hope that UA-cam will actually send the notification when a new video is posted.
Not being able to pull off at least scenes in home app disqualifies it for me to purchase it. Matter hype makes me laugh. It was supposed to be a universal protocol, which it proves not.
Yeah, Matter is definitely a good thing but it’s currently a bit touch and go with the universal protocols. However, hopefully that’s just due to Matter still being in early days & should improve.
Hung mine a few summers back- 48ft regular cafe lights on an outdoor dimmer with Pico remote. We have just rebuilt our deck and made it bigger. Now I’m considering this vs extending the existing with another 48 ft.
I’ll be curious to find out if water gets in the bulbs like my current lights.
Wow, I like but …I wonder why matter over wi-fi, instead of matter over thread? For those of us who are using as few hubs as possible, and who get easily overwhelmed and frustrated with all this, this gives me a great deal of pause.
I certainly would like to see a, how to video? The extra wire above the lights, is that included? Very sturdy looking product!
Want to see a compare of these and govee.
Hi Shane, as always great video!! Just wondering are you still able to control the string lights with the lutron Pico remote?
Thank you! Natively, Pico remotes are not accessible in HomeKit. They are made to only control Lutron devices in the Lutron app.
That said, there are ways to expose a Pico remote to HomeKit. Homebridge and Homey Pro are two methods that I've used. So yes, I can control any homekit accessory with my Pico remotes. Just know that it requires something like Homebridge to do so.
Literally halfway through the video I was thinking “oh what is that line he has strung his lights on!” I guess what I’m saying is that a video on how to string these lights might be useful! 😂
Haha. Thanks for the feedback!
I’d be interested in the how-to & tips video on string lights…
Would love a setup video
May have missed it but what are the lumens for these bulbs. How many are on the string?
I use the Atomi string lights! Picked up at Costco super reasonable.
Costco has the stuff! I don’t know why my area of NC doesn’t have one. You’d think it would go over well in Asheville.
Could you explain how the bulbs are individually addressable. How do you do that? I appreciated this video because I was considering buying them. I am interested in a video about best practices hanging the lights.
Individually addressable means that the strand of lights can contain different colors at the same time. This is most obvious when using various effects.
Unrelated to the string lights - howd you get your lines to snake through your panels at 7:30? That looks so sick
Great review. May be a dumb question, are you able to set up directly from HomeKit and not use nanoleaf app?
Thanks for watching! Yes, you should be able to do this since these use Matter. However I would recommend using the Nanoleaf App, at first at least, so you can get any firmware updates. I don't know if you can get those updates through the Home app alone.
looks promising, the yes, the price is staggering
I just received these and they are a great addition to my backyard. Only issue is the last 12 bulbs in the second string doesn’t work anymore. They did work for a few days and now they don’t. Anyone else have this issue? I’ve deleted and re-paired 3 times but no luck in getting those last 12 bulbs in the 98ft(30m) to work.
Althought Matter is pretty neat overall, i think its really finicky and has some weird limitations, especially with Hue products (what I own). Not being able to export scenes while connected through matter is a let down. Someone described matter as "taming of the wild west that is smart products" which is true but it tames certain product features a little too much.
It seems like there's a screw in cable between the controller and the first light. Is there another one of the same type on the other side? Maybe you used them in the wrong place. If not, it seems Nanoleaf can just change the length of that one piece of cable.
I thought that too and I tried to reverse it but they are different connectors on each side of that cable. This was the only way to attach it.
Would you recommend these over the LIFX outdoor string lights? I watched a review and the LIFX are cheaper.
The LIFX outdoor string lights are half the length (24') as the Nanoleaf outdoor string lights (49')...and they are the same price. So technically the LIFX ones are twice as much than the Nanoleaf string lights.
I haven't used the LIFX lights personally, so I can't speak to their performance. Some other notes:
- They both connect over WiFi
- Nanoleaf supports Matter, LIFX does not
- Design differences
Personally, I like the design of the Nanoleaf string lights better. I think in the end, it comes down to these factors when deciding between the two: design preference, the length you need, budget, and whether or not Matter support is important to you.
@@ShaneCreates thanks so much!
Thread?
Able to add to Home assistant and still be in HomeKit ??
I don't have HA setup currently so I did not test that. However, you should be able to via Matter, assuming you have the ability to add Matter over wifi accessories to HA. Matter supports multi-admin, so you can add accessories to multiple ecosystems through Matter.
@@ShaneCreates Thanks Shane, I have some dumb one now was gonna try the Atomi from Costco but any integration seems tricky with Tuya…. Like some old Sylvania’s I had
But why nanoleaf didn’t go with thread?
❤️💪🏼😎👍🏼❤️
I wonder, does Homekit have the limitation where it is unable to control the scenes, or is this a limitation of the device? How does Homekit deal with other addressable LED strips?
If some features only work with the manufacturer's app, that would confirm a fear I have had about Matter devices; that is, manufacturers can make 1st and 2nd class experiences using features only available in their app while still receiving Matter certification. There is still a chance for this to be redeemed in the future, as the Matter specification is still very new and a work in progress, but I am worried that companies will use these types of features to create new walled gardens/moats to force you to use an app that collects your data. This could open a whole can of worms that will lead to you needing a bunch of apps on your phone to unlock all the features of your smart home and undermine the simplicity that Matter could bring to the smart home.
Or, it is a work in progress and I should just calm down and let the dev team work; I guess we need to wait and see.
It's a valid concern, but I don't think it's anything new, to be honest. Even before Matter, many smart home accessories had features that that could only be utilized through the manufacturer's app. I think that is largely because HomeKit (in this example) only supports certain attributes and features.
I think this will be even more so the case with Matter. Matter accessories will have to work through the specification in all ecosystems, so I expect many "extra" features a specific device may support won't be accessible in these matter controller apps, therefore requiring the manufacturer's app to take advantage of the feature. Some brands like Nanoleaf and Aqara have found "workarounds" to this in the past through HomeKit scenes.
I think when using the Matter integration for any device, you can expect basic functionality. That said, we have heard that Matter is working on supporting individually addressable LEDs or lighting effects. So hopefully we will see that one in the future. But I would expect anything beyond "basic functionality" will probably always require a manufacture's app.
Nice but way too costly
So expensive. I can live with my traditional string lights plugged into an outdoor smart plug for a fraction of the price. I just don’t get multi-color.
I have string lights installed on a fence, that is beautiful. But squirrels are cutting them one by one just over the bulb… 😡
Oh no!
The bulbs left a bad taste in my mouth with the quality and connection issues….
I certainly would like to see a, how to video? The extra wire above the lights, is that included? Very sturdy product!
That is a guy wire. No light kits include it. In reality you should have a guy wire regardless if they are smart lights or not
I certainly would like to see a, how to video? The extra wire above the lights, is that included? Very sturdy product!
Just received my set, the only items included are the actual lights. No hooks, screws, extra wire to hang them from, etc.
I'm thinking the easiest way to hang them would probably be how he did it - hang wire and attach them to the wire so as not to need to screw into the patio overhang.
That’s a guide wire, not included. Here’s is the new video showing how I installed them:
