  • Today we're going to go back to the past to discuss several things from my childhood that scared me! In the process you also get to find out how I got into horror. (Also, I don't actually know if I'll complete my Elm Street ranking in a week's time so don't hold me to that!)

I can’t remember what scared me the most as a kid, I am very easy to scare even nowadays so the list would never end. But one example I remember that I think is pretty funny nowadays is the DVD I had of the Jim Carrey Grinch.
It was kept on the bookshelf in my room, and every time I’d walk past it and see the cover I’d always be unsettled by how gross and creepy the Grinch looked, he freaked me out. I would frequently take it off the bookshelf and hide it in my parents’ room so I wouldn’t have to look at it, but it always found its way back pretty quickly. I haven’t seen that DVD since I moved houses over a decade ago and I still haven’t watched the movie to this day.

I enjoyed this list a lot! Definitely get it with the not expecting something in a kids’ show or game, even if specific ones were different for me. Here’s a bonus Ducko entry for folks: the Body Snatchers Looney Tunes short. Something about the weird-ass way the replacement toons acted, and the normally in control Bugs being in peril from his bloodthirsty replacement made me want to deliberately avoid it if I thought it was coming on.

I feel you a whole lot about Super Mario 64’s Mad Piano, the Scary Maze game, to even Bloody Mary with some extents. Meanwhile, stuff such as Sonic R’s Tails Doll and Earthbound’s Giygas would be what personally gave me cold chills growing up. Heck, the latter to this very day still unease me greatly from time to time… 🫣
Neat video to come at us all with overall yet again, Max! Consider me eagerly looking forward to when you’ll be ranking the Nightmare on Elm Street movies! 🛏️😈

The thing that scared me the most was Chucky from Child’s Play, especially the scene in the second movie where Andy get’s attacked by him in the basement, followed by Chucky killing his stepdad, I had to check every corner of my house to check if he wasn’t there, I even had a nightmare where I got out the shower and he attacked me and my family

Two things come to mind for me, one being that vertical platforming section in chemical plant in Sonic Mania (aka the first time I had to face the dreaded drowning music while playing the game) and the much earlier in life uncanny Dino suits in that Dinosaur tv show! Also got freaked out watching play throughs of Bendy and the Ink Machine.

this was a real fun video, personally one of the things that always got me as a kid was he concept of zombies, the idea of being cornered by a bunch of them as a kid was horrifying, nowadays i do like watching crappy zombie films lol so thats good.

Oh Freddy scared the living shit out of me a lot when I was a kid
Hell, I remember when I was in bed once watching TV before sleep and I saw a trailer for the Nightmare on Elm Street Remake and it scared the shit out of me.
My family also went to this one wax museum in Ireland during vacation and there was a horror section that had Freddy in it. And I swear that the minute my eyes landed on the damn thing, I ran for the hallway, like I was having a full meltdown and everything (I have Autism, probably unrelated but I just wanna mention it).
I look back on that memory and think just how oddly funny it is in retrospect, since if I went nowadays, having become a massive fan of horror movies and horror as a genre, I would probably be gunning for the horror section to check out all the wax figures
Also they had a Bride of Frankenstein wax figure that had bare breasts showing. Just felt like mentioning that

For me it was Sandy from the 1985 film House, I had a recurring fear of her teaming up with the critters from Critters to get me. Warwick Davis' Leprechaun was up there too.

I used to be horrified of Bloody Mary but not for the reason you think. For some BAFFLINGLY INEXPLAINABLE reason, at my elementary school's book fair was a book about Bloody Mary. I was made fun of for being scared of the cover. What was the cover? Just a girl with gashes for eyes and a mouth with blood coating her pale flesh. Yeah. Totally normal stuff for a children's book fair.

    Good vid!
And I hardcore relate to the Video Store Experience, it wasn't a Blockbuster but we had a Video Store right near my Grandpa's old house (Which unfortunately closed down when i was real young, I think I got Looney Toons Back In Action during the out of business sale though)
Point is I remember two specific movie covers scaring me, and one of them actually giving me nightmares. The first one was Ghoulies 2, i got so scared to use the bathroom because of that fuckin thing.
The one that gave me a nightmare though was Chopping Mall, the site of a paper bag with organs and a screaming face scared the shit out of me. The one thing I remember from the dream was two rows of 10 bags just like it (except without the body parts visible), just shaking in the wind at dusk. Fuckin wild.
I was also super scared of spiders so you can bet that one episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog fucked me up, you know the one, fuck that one.
I was also scared shitless of a lot of creepypastas, the most vivid ones were Slenderman, Jeff the Killer, and this one story about an evil Venonat Plush Doll that had me so scared that I was looking over my shoulder just going to the bathroom. That's two nickels for weird bathroom trauma.
Last thing for real but I was also really fucking scared of Goosebumps. But I remember getting over that fear . . . Just as Season 2 was announced and that season scared me just as fucking much, and I was super pissed because the moment they announced it I KNEW it would scare me.
Once again, really great vid! Looking forward to those Elm Street Rankings!

    Nice video.
It would have been better if the video had come out in October, but it's still interesting to learn from moments from your childhood like that, it reminded me of the Cellspex video about almost the same thing.

So I can't be alone in this, as a kid I was somewhat easily scared by some horror films and moments in TV shows, but the one thing that would always scare me up until I was 12 was something in Goosebumps
Now the show never really scared me aside from some things that was weirdly traumatizing for a kids show, but even as a kid I saw it as goofy horror and bad acting. But for some reason, the one thing that always scared me was the intro, and more importantly, the god damn dog that gets those goofy lizard eyes. I HATED having to sit through the opening because I would close my eyes and cover my ears whenever that scene was gonna come. It's the smallest of things yeah but good God did it leave an impact.

I was traumatized by #2 as well. You know there was also a ritual similar to this, except instead of being killed by a ghost, you stare into the mirror on Halloween night(October 30th) and find your secret admirer. Might be useful for those who want a boyfriend/girlfriend badly around the age of 18-22, but it would likely not work(technically).
