I hope to see your work published and available to read! Congratulations on the completion of your dissertation--this research will live beyond your time. How wonderful to have the opportunity to learn more about Alberta.
Congratulations Julie on submitting your thesis. What an achievement and how proud you should be. You are a great role model for your children of being a life long learner. Well done you! From Melbourne Australia
Pines can be exceptionally useful. They continue the process of photosynthesis through winter when deciduous trees have lost their leaves. Dry your pine cones for useful firestarters in fireplace, grill, etc. Pine wood is soft, but pine does make nice storage boxes and other woodworking items. Lots of craft and decorative uses. The scent of pine in the house is emotionally cleansing, which is why we use pine cleaners like Pine-Sol. And MORE.
Julie, congratulations on completing and sending off your dissertation! I well remember the day I drove mine to my school (it was for a Doctor of Ministry degree). I sang all the way there and all the way back 😊. Such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and relief. Well done!
Julie, you write beautifully. How proud your family must be for you. This has been a fascinating journey and thank you tremendously for bringing us along. Looking forward to hearing more about Alberta, an extraordinary woman.
Hi Julie and Luke, Julie seeing the emotion in you when you sent off your dissertation made me cry, for joy for you. I remember telling you I could sit and listen for hours to you telling us about Alberta as you did research. I hope someday we can all get to read it. You do need to celebrate completing this, along with doing every other project to keep Mapperton going. Congratulations, Tanto amore da N.Y.
Happy to be a sponsor. Julie & Luke are genuine helpers of the earth. Being Native American indian, i grew up respecting Mother earth. Thank you Luke & Julie. You both are amazing and beautiful people.
Julie. I am very proud of you and all the work you've done for the Alberta dissertation. You are doing incredible work personally and with Luke for your family, for Mapperton, and for the history of your adopted country. Best wishes, Merry Hanning ❤❤
What an amazing moment to finally send your dissertation! You have been an inspiration to me, as I also have all my grandparents correspondence and my grandfather’s diaries from 1914 -1947. It’s a fascinating project with all your volunteer transcribers helping along the way. I loved coming to your Alberta exhibition at Mapperton and having the chance to talk to AI Alberta!
Julie, I have no doubt you'll do well on ur assignment and look back on this day and think..why was I so anxious over a paper? You'll always have America's support.
My eyes welled up with tears of joy and compassion for all the work that you did to get the dissertation completed and submitted, Julie❤ BRAVO, WELL DONE 👏🏼 ‼️
Pines are great trees. They provide greenery and or shade/privacy even in Winter. They also grow in soil conditions that other trees struggle with. I had just been thinking a few weeks ago that you need to plant more evergreens.
Julie, I am so proud of you finishing your dissertation, and hitting send. I have followed the process of getting to know Alberta. One thing I noticed today in her photos - Luke has her eyes.
Thank you Julie for allowing us to go through this process and 💜❗️ cheers. Remember all can not do what you’ve done! Congratulations from a pnw prayer partner ❗️💜
I am deeply touched by your emotional response to finishing and submitting your dissertation. Brings back memories of my own graduate work at Columbia, while working full time and raising two children. Well done and heartfelt congratulations to you, Julie.
Wow! What a treasure trove! It is so hard to go through things without getting distracted! That is a good use of all the shelves! The bread oven was a unique discovery! Luke’s pizza oven! Your orchard is going to be wonderful…so many varieties. Julie, your emotions are so understandable. You have put so much of yourself into your dissertation, and I do hope I get to see it be published. You are going to knock the socks off the “powers that be”! Congratulations on the completion, and the best to you in getting your Master Degree!! Love from Pennsylvania 💕🌷🐻
Julie- when you would have your dissertation writing sessions on the channel, I was also working on my Masters and I would put on your videos (live or later) and study "with" you. It was so helpful and inspiring and really helped get me in the groove. Now I am working on my doctorate, and you continue to inspire me. Thanks for the help... it really did make a difference. Congratulations and we'll done!
Congratulations, Julie !! And congratulations, Luke! Great title for a book lol - An Orchid and A Dissertation Are Born! Especially since you're not publishing, I think the whole purpose for that research is not just the educational commendation, but the experience of dedicating years of research, hard work and passion all into one project so that history is preserved, new discoveries are made and you learn how to bring a passion to fruition! Then we come to orchards. Your children will see those trees at full capacity and nature will thank you for creating the whole environment! All these little battles give us purpose! 💝
If you are looking for trees that can hold up against wind- look into Live Oaks. Here in FL, USA we experience extreme winds and the trees that reach old age are the Live Oaks. They are beautiful as well.
From East Coast Canada we grow an apple variety Honey Crisp . Amazing variety ,not too sweet , makes great pies, but also fermented beverages, sold in our Comissions.
23 minutes in and I'm feeling the emotions of what you are saying. All the dedicated work and suddenly I realise that someone in many many years to come will be sat where you are writing about you and what an incredible woman you are. Wow. To think we are all here with you now with the woman that will one day be written about 😢 so emotional. GOD BLESS you for all you do .❤
I love your walks on the property. It seems so peaceful. And I love the way you care for each tree, that's out there. I would go on long walks every day if I live there.
Viscountess we are truly honoured and so proud of what you have achieved, Mapperton is you! We know that the family has done well to maintain the all the historical matter associated with the peerage. Your dedication, commitment to ensuring that all types of historical documents, apparel, artefacts are logged, preserved for the future of the Montague family. Thank you for allowing us all to be part of this wonderful, inspiring and creative journey through the eyes of the Earldom of Sandwich. God Bless you all, take care. 😇🙏🏰👍😍
You got this Julie you're going to smash your dissertation!!! You're going to feel lost now that that chapter is over but thank you for taking us on this journey. What's the next goal after the dissertation??
Congratulations Julie for sending in the dissertation!! So emotional and exciting! Love the new orchard Luke, and there are so many things you can do with the pine tree. Happy New Year!! 🎉❤
Julie, congratulations on the completion of your dissertation. It is a feat accomplished by the few, not the many, and requires organization and discipline. Mostly, however, it requires a dream and a vision, which both you and your subject possess, rooted in the DNA of your Yankee spirit.
Another excellent video! I am sorry about the loss of the pine (Californian here) but was very pleased to see the orchard being restored. My Lady, I am very, very certain that your Dissertation will be well received and accepted. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. Such work continues to keep the history of the Earldom and your family alive.
Starting my advanced masters degree now, have one masters degree in architecture from my youth. Have taken2 years of architectural history and preservation theories part time and now I finally start a New master thesis in Architectural preservation. I am so looking forward to it!
Hi Julie Thanks for keeping it real. I live in Australia and love watching you on both channels , your inspiring and say exactly whats on your mind , great work. Please keep on sharing 👏👏👏👏😘
Three days before a wedding that took place in the back yard we had a huge pine tree split and take out two apple trees and cover the food tent and band stand spaces with huge branches ,pieces of trunk and other tree debris. It took two people with chain saws two days to clear most of it up.
Yea!! 🎉👏👏👏 Julie! Congratulations! I've been following your research since the beginning and can't wait to read the book(s) and watch the movie & miniseries on Alberta!
Congratulations on the completion and submission of your Dissertation! A lot of hard work completed. Hope you all had a very happy Christmas, and May 2025 be a brilliant year for you all. 🎆🎆🎇🎇
Julie, they have a product called dissolve it and a product called Goo Gone that removes Gooey or stickers. They say pine cones are good fire starters.
I used to feel like Susie about pine trees; I didn't like them. Then I started feeding birds and realized just how important they are to nature. We have Crossbills, whose bills are why they have their name and are made especially to separate the cone to pick out the seeds. They're rare in my area but, one winter, we had them at our feeders and in our two 60- to 80-foot pines.
Oh Wow, to see my name as a Patron at the end of the credits made my heart swell. Just love Mapperton, Julie & Luke. It’s important to give back in this world. I feel blessed to be a part of such a wonderful community of like minded people throughout the world. Happy New Year to All.

If the silver is in the silver boxes they usually stay less tarnished. The boxes have a material that protects the silver. I have my family silver in such boxes. Just a note.🤗🇺🇸
"Silverclothe" is usually a felt or flannel fabric that has been impregnated with silver in order to reduce or eliminate tarnishing of silver by reducing the effect of acids on the silver. So essentially the silver in the fabric is sacrificed for the silver item. Depending on how much exposure there is to the silver and the environment of where the silver is stored decides how long before the tarnish protection of the fabric lasts. So at some point it will be necessary to replace the fabric lining in storage containers or the storage pouches. The warmer/humid the area your silver is stored the quicker will silver particles tarnish and disappear. It likes cooler/dry conditions. Remember that a natural component of wood is an acid that is why newsprint turns so quickly in the sun and paper products used in archival settings is treated to reduce or eliminate that acid. And if you put silver in a wood storage container the "air" inside that container effectively becomes a bath of acid as soon as the silver particles are use up. Usually the lining of wood storage containers/chests is felt rather than flannel as the felt is thicker and does not need support as would a pouch, which is usually of flannel. What i have noticed with the use of pouches is that you have to reduce the air exchange to best protect the silver and i do that by tying up the end just before the drawstring so that air cannot flow even by the remotest of means from outside the pouch to the inside.
For those that have access to matured rose hips may have already noticed a similarity in shape that they are in the same family as pears. The beauty of that is it is virtually impossible to kill a pear tree unless it freezes or you do not water it. I have pruned pear trees to before any grafting line and they have reestablished themselves. The beauty of this is the lower the branches are to the ground the easier it is to pick the fruit. Of course in wild areas the closure the fruit is to the ground the easier it is for the wildlife to get to it. Pear varieties in the US are rather limited to the commercial snacking type so not familiar if there are "eating" pears and cooking pears but as there are the same in apples maybe I too would change from wanting to snack on pears but cook apples. Never have come across a pear pie that i enjoyed but certainly have with apple. And from personal practice, i know that a fully ripen pear will be softer when canned than one that is not as ripe. I know there are some varieties of apple that you could not bite into even if you wanted to so their only use is for cooking.
Julie, I know your Masters path as I recently finished my MBA at 60 years old. It was quite a journey requiring a full dose of perseverance and fortitude. When I opened my official Masters degree, I welled up, realizing the incredible accomplishment that it is! Congrats on nearing your Masters degree completion.
Pine seeds are generally not sproutable until they have ripened which you can usually tell after the squirrels and birds leave a mess of axis and scales on the ground. They do tend to get first access to them since the cones are up in the trees where they play. Ask anyone with an avocado tree about who usually wins out on the harvest; same concept. Avocados may be hard as rock but to squirrels they are like eating butter out of the wrapper because of the fat content. But if you use your pine cones to start fires reserve the best examples for display when the fireplace is disused and collect the axis to actually hide in the kindling to start the fire. That is where the pitch can be found. Make certain to remove your display cones before lighting the fire. If your display cones look a bit mangy you can freshen them up a bit by boiling them in water to remove surface dirt/animals then just let them dry as the moister will close the scales.
I’m curious about the trees. I recall hearing that a large number of trees were to be planted for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, will these trees count into that number? Whether or not, new growth trees help to make more oxygen for our Planet!
You aren't necessarily a hoarder if you're keeping things that can be reused. Just make sure you put a note both on the inside and the outside of the box that says "for menus" and put them in the appropriate place where you were printing the other menus to remind yourself what you were thinking. I could also see those being used as a welcome note for the holiday lets and the week long house party ya'll have.
Since holly regrowths from the roots it might be an opportunity if roots are exposed to section off root and disperse it especially for hedgerows and Julie's Xmas supply. Or is it considered an invasive species?
“Number 9 that’s George! 😂 The box not the Earl”. Your heartfelt and delightful enthusiasm is so lovely to witness. ❤

Watching this, got me in the mood to clear my home and reorganize.
Pine trees are common in my area. They grow fast & tall, but they snap easily in high winds. Your orchard project is SO exciting!
Where are you? Growing up in Vancouver & Whistler - not so much with those pines? So I think it tends to be on the variety of pine?
Happy to be a sponsor. Julie & Luke are genuine helpers of the earth. Being Native American indian, i grew up respecting Mother earth. Thank you Luke & Julie. You both are amazing and beautiful people.

You Brits crack me up when you say you’ll Hoover up something instead of saying that you’ll vacuum up the stuff. 😊 So cute!
We say "hoover" instead of vacuum most of the time in Australia too!😊

A clean and tidey office means a more efficient new year!
I know that your dissertation will be amazing. Congratulations Julie
Starting my advanced masters degree now, have one masters degree in architecture from my youth. Have taken2 years of architectural history and preservation theories part time and now I finally start a New master thesis in Architectural preservation. I am so looking forward to it!
It was so cool to see you hit send, Julie! I could feel your emotion.
Leave some for the winter in spring summer have it clean up for area new growth / save some of cones for planting new trees
Those old 'shoot' cards can be used in so many ways around the estate. I'm sure Julie can put them to good use.
Well done Julie! (Its a huge part of life for such a long time, so congratulations on sending it off)
Hi Julie Thanks for keeping it real. I live in Australia and love watching you on both channels , your inspiring and say exactly whats on your mind , great work. Please keep on sharing 👏👏👏👏😘
Congratulations Julie!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The silver chests are AMAZING!!!
Dont refinished the silver chests. Dealers will always tell you the finish they are found in is best.
Damsons are becoming a rarity here in Canada so very exciting to see some going in at Mapperton.
Three days before a wedding that took place in the back yard we had a huge pine tree split and take out two apple trees and cover the food tent and band stand spaces with huge branches ,pieces of trunk and other tree debris. It took two people with chain saws two days to clear most of it up.
Congratulations for completing your dissertation. I’ve enjoyed following your project videos.
You could always try saving the seeds from the pine cone and start them..
¡Felicidades Julie!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Yea!! 🎉👏👏👏 Julie! Congratulations! I've been following your research since the beginning and can't wait to read the book(s) and watch the movie & miniseries on Alberta!
Yes! Thank you!
Oh!!! Hi from Dallas/ FtWorth Texas 1:35 pm😊😅
Congratulations on the completion and submission of your Dissertation! A lot of hard work completed. Hope you all had a very happy Christmas, and May 2025 be a brilliant year for you all. 🎆🎆🎇🎇
So many projects. It is exhausting just to think about all you have to do. Thank you for sharing
Julie, they have a product called dissolve it and a product called Goo Gone that removes Gooey or stickers. They say pine cones are good fire starters.
Just don't blame Julie for chucking out stuff you don't need. I know that I am a hoarder too and I hate people touching my stuff. 😂😂
Noticed RR tracks on the map. Did Mapperton have its own station & are there any remnants of the line? 🚂
Your thesis is fascinating. You are a wonderful writer. You have great helpers. And you are going to be fine and do well. Don't worry!
Thank you so much!
Now, that’s a LOT of work! Great timing, though, and a good opportunity to take some sort of inventory of your office supplies.
Mapperton Pizza!!!!!! Brilliant!!!
snags, etc for several bird habitats - thank you for sharing

I love Holly’s vintage Ralph Lauren sweater. I had one just like it.
The birds and small animals will love a bit of forage to give them a habitat.
I watched and loved every episode that you filmed about Alberta
I would love one of those shoot cards they're very beautiful
Hi from the Oregon coast!

What a goldmine you have!!!
For future, if you put the tightly closed pine cones in a low oven they will open if you prefer them that way.
