I have that paisley, it's been available in Montmartre for 20 years...I made a throw pillow for my 1930's French meridienne/fainting couch.....
....Don't worry Julie, I would have gone for pink but had that pale gray and bordeaux as well.

Colors don’t show up the same on digital devises as they do in person. You’re fine, Julie. You’re the one who has to look at it. Most of us are unlikely to ever see it in person. Not to say I don’t want to come to England, but I specifically want to visit all the places my ancestors lived, which is York, Scotland, Nottinghamshire, Bath, and then burials at Lindisfarne and Westminster Abbey.

@@longwaytotipperaryOne can see it during the tours I guess. So yes, people might have seen it in person. Even so, the footage was clear enough to show the colour of the fireplace and the "coldness" of the room. The colours she choose were horrible! And though it is a family home, it is also an historic house that has to be preserved and presented to the public. The professional advice from Malcolm was very welcome here. (although I personally didn't like his choice for the woodwork, too greyish)

Julie, don't give up learning and trying. Malcolm just has a few more years of experience to draw upon. 😉 You are blessed with an opportunity to have a gifted person from whom to learn.
If I remember correctly, once the color scheme is determined, you have an excellent skill of finding the right decorations/furniure to finish off a room. Also, your devotion to doing the actual work always impresses me.
About the piano, it is my understanding that they don't like extreme temperatures, and that temperature changes can tend to make them go out of tune. I believe piano tuning is rather dear. The piano may do better in another room that has better temperature control, if such a room exists in your family "pile".
Thank you for sharing your life with us.

I absolutely love the new color palette . If the Library was in my home , and clearly it isn't , I would choose a similar color palette , however I would paint the bookshelves exterior with a dark green and the interior back and sides with the red Malcolm chose . I love the solid color velvet fabrics he chose especially paired with the red paisley . What about a dark green velvet , or similar fabric , sofa paired with the red paisley pillows ? Or a chair with the red paisley fabric ? Excellent warm color palette perfect for a library . What about a live question and answer with Malcolm so viewers can ask interior design questions , especially about choosing interior paint colors and the science behind it ? An example would be choosing appropriate colors for aging eyes ( low/dimmer light and not as sharp ) . It would be really nice if you could fully restore the heraldic carving above the fireplace to it's original colors and detailed look . Doing that , plus cleaning the fireplace surrounding stone and finishing the cleaning and conservation of the ceilings seems to me to be the most significant with the greatest impact . Thanks for sharing with us your interior design decision process . And sharing Malcolm's wit and design skills .

I am a designer and color consultant and I appreciated this episode because so many have been in this situation. My journey to being a color consultant took years of training and experience. For those doing it as DIY or training to be a consultant watch the steps Malcom takes to come up with the scheme:
First is the aspect (can also be room orientation and light) what is the room used for. Here he addresses its a room that is cold, and needs to be warmed up.
Second is what are the fixed elements: in this case its the mantle and the books. These are the elements in the room that will stay. Also look at the floor other furnishings.
Now that is sorted the medium ochre yellow has enough body to it but still a background color that harmonizes with the fixed elements and warms up the room.
The shaded white for trim is perfect because it not a harsh bright white, and shaded meaning there is some black in it, and yet it still crisp against the yellow. In traditional houses you are much better off with a white that has some body to it, an "old white" will seem richer.
The red is the accent color and has some ochre in it, and shares a similar "tone" an as the yellow. its also an analogous color on the color wheel with yellow.
One last thing: note how in the fabrics the is just one green fabric. That would be used sparingly, but its a designer trick in a scheme to incorporate a complementary color somewhere in the room. Green is the complement to the red. The eye searches for a complementary color in a painting on in a room, and its jarring if used too liberally, but as a small dose (like a trim) it adds that special accent to a room. You may not notice it except subconsciously, but it is an insider detail.

@@brooke_reiverrose2949 Thank you! There is a logic to it, and an approach, that once put into practice does give you great results. Lets say there are no fixed elements and its a blank space, then along with asking how you want to feel in the room and what its used for, you can take a work of art, or a rug, or textile that you want in the room and let that guide you. The nice thing about having an object like a work of art is that if the couple both loves it, then there is agreement for a couple (that can be an issue) and then everything else in the colors of the scheme falls into place following what looks good with that.

Julie, you have done (and are doing) an amazing job with all your channels, renovating your little Italian house and helping Luike with Mapperton. AND traveling around the UK promoting other historic houses, castles, manors, and great houses! People's opinions can come over as harsh online, without the personal touch and I'm sure that no one meant to be so discouraging with their comments.
However, I love the colors that Malcolm chose! They are definitely warm and inviting and will look wonderful when everything is finished! So, Malcolm has his strong interior design talents and you have the ability to connect with the chilly, brusque aristocracy with that American wit and open, warm spirit that you have. You're not afraid to forge ahead to get things done, but you can also admit you don't know everything and that you can learn from others. That's part of what makes you such a wonderful person! 🥰👏💯

Beautiful Malcom to your rescue. Julie comments can be brutal but just remember how talented you are. You’re a person who works so hard to create such beautiful things. Don’t let the peanut gallery get to your heart.
    God Bless❤️

Luke, I hope they will have the road fixed and completed.
Malcom, I’m thrilled you are back!!! Brilliant colors and fabrications for a cozy rich study for Luke to enjoy.
You should create a Fundraiser to fun d the furniture, window treatment, art and accessories. Now it will be a gentleman’s study to compliment the other rooms. The piano would be lovely in the sitting room . Not sure if you have room.
    Bravo 👏

    Hello Julie,
I think it's smart of you to take this experience as largely constructive criticism. Onboard it to refine your taste. I don't think this experience means you need to give up putting your own personal touches but that instead you can take it to learn how to be personal in a better way. All the best!

I’m so glad you changed your mind about the colours you had chosen. I always take my other half’s advice as he has a Masters in Art & Design from Gray’s. As a musician who grew up with my dad’s grand piano in our living room, I would caution you against having your piano at the window. The temperature will fluctuate too much and your piano will never stay in tune. You would be better to have the piano in another room where there is a more stable temperature throughout the year.

I confess being one of those who didn’t care for your choices but I wouldn’t comment because paint is so difficult to choose unless you’re physically there and familiar with the property. You haven’t gone wrong on any major decision and our opinions may help but….what the heck do we know!!! It’s going to look fabulous.

Selecting paint colors can be agonizing, and we've all made mistakes we want to forget (as I repaint my dining room 🙃). I'm glad Malcolm was available to help you. The new colors look lovely. I hope you will be so pleased with the final outcome you forget all about the other colors.

    Absolutely stunning! Thank you Malcom.
Julie, your colors were just fine…for another room. That fireplace stone was the only reason your choices didn’t work here. Now you (and WE) have learned from Malcom’s lesson and know more about what to make sure we consider when choosing paint. I hope you are able to use your lovely combination in another room soon.

I like the colors you had picked, Julie. I don't understand all the negative feedback. With that said, I also very much like the colors Malcolm has suggested. I think the burgundy on the inside of the bookcase is going to look really nice against the woodwork. I look forward to seeing the library when it's done.

Malcolm! He makes it look easy, logical and obvious, but that is because he is very good, not because it is easy. I know the urge to "just do it yourself" and I often go with it, but we all know there are people who actually know what they are doing who can do it better. On a side note: The Malcolms of your world explaining their craft makes the videos so much more interesting as well. Not a criticism of Julie because she is obviously a huge part of why we watch! 😄
