Craig just came across you website, been wanting to make a picket fence for the front garden, had the wood for ages, thanks for showing the process from star to finish,
Decided to have a go myself and built a picket fence and gate after watching your videos. Glad I did as turned out good thanks for giving the step by step guide…might have a go at my own planters next 😂 thank you
I love these videos so much. Craig makes it look so straight forward and gives you the confidence to give it a go. I've never had an issue with Silverline tools and for a homeowner like me who doesn't use them too often it's good to have a budget brand making tools you can rely on and are readily available.
Thanks, your right Silverline tools are perfect for all Diy jobs around the house and garden, I've used them also for years on trade jobs and they stand the time.
Mortise the posts for the 'arris rails', also bevel the top of the post for water run off..........it's only silverline at the end of the day, but getting it right doesn't cost the earth!
Hi Craig and the team at Silverline. Thank you for posting this. I'm about to build my first picket fence, in January - Wish me luck! I'm documenting the process on our website. I learned a few things here so have included what I learned on the site. I love that you guys don't should about your tools, but I have to say I want one of those spade - is that something that you make? I'm just going to check out the gate video too. Thanks for posting!
I'd be adding an offcut of paver to keep that post of the bottom of your hole, but pre position your posts with two pegs and some bracing, plum your post then pour your concrete. Otherwise you risk of having your fence posts running out of plum. Not a negative mate, but try it...it works regardless of your fence post heights.
Arris rails, not Harris rails, Pales not Slats - 100mm x100mm is a bit overkill for a picket fence, use 75mm x 75mm, they'll be slightly cheaper too. Instead of mixing up concrete for posts buy bags of Postcrete it goes off in hours. 8~)
There are no such things as "Harris Rails". There are things called Arris Rails but they have a triangular section. What you are using are "Rails". Good tip with the block though.
Bit of overkill for a paling fence. Start off by buying paling fencing. I can buy locally in 2021 for 75mm X 900 mm at just over £1.00. Then use 75mm square, larger not needed for a low garden fence which I think most might be interested in, rather than what looks like a housing estate fence going through concrete. Posted with best of intentions.
Your right it's a bit quicker and not as much mixing, however if you have lots of posts and fencing to do i like had it would be far more expensive using Postcrete
@@MrDIYCraigPhillips See you point mate. Standard concrete mix is about £4 a bag from the main DIY stores. Postcrete about £4.75. I've got 15, 8ft posts to put up in the spring (for panel fencing). Going to be pricing that one up carefully, might even look to see if I can get some ready mixed delivered.
@@AshSUFC1889 At that price with 15 posts its not going to be a huge amount so if you can afford it, go for it, strength wise it will still be the same. Good luck.
So Clamp the top one and nail the bottom one 7:34. Then when you release the clamp the rail is moving all over the place, That nailer is a bit dodgy I recon.
Not a criticism, but Post hole digger, Roughneck bar and Postcrete would make the job far quicker and easier for the DIY'er. I have a video on the best tools to use if anyone interested ua-cam.com/video/P0tl_U3EYL8/v-deo.html
*DIY.... concrete mixer, making own fence slats, compressor and nail gun and something called a "Harris Rail". If he meant Arris Rail.... then those were not Arris Rails.
I'm glad you are here to set us all straight! /s For the record I'm a diy and have all this except a mixer, and believe it or not there are places you can (brace yourself) *rent out tools* !
Craig is getting a few ££ for using them id say..he is nice fella so if he can make some easy tin I dont mind..that hand saw looks pure dirt thats for sure..
I take it you've not used Silverline tools for many years now, I've watch the brand and its tools rage over for over 15 years now and you'll be impressed if you used them now, pound for pound they stand the test, and get the job done on a budget.
@@MrDIYCraigPhillips I'm a professional Plumbing and Heating engineer and also an administrator on a trade/DIY forum, silverline tools never get a good review from any member whether Pro or DIY. I appreciate it's a low end market product but for the small £££'s there is much better available out there. Some comments on their products are "not fit for purpose" says it all really. We find the diyers will either buy erbauer or draper.
@@pb9926 Thanks for your comments, we will take this on board and all feedback is helpful for future development. we'll look into the forum and try and find which tools are are, to date we have over 9000 different products and get thousands of great feed back form most of the range.
Loved your method of both shaving the top to give a nice hex shape and the spacing and height trick, awesome !
Thank you very much!
Thank you for such an easy how to video!! I’ll be using this in the coming weeks.
Awesome! let us know how you get on!
This video is fantastic and has been a brilliant help, thank you Craig absolute top man
Great to hear!

Nice work! Glad we could help!
Simply beautiful ❤. Thank you.
Thank you! 😊
Nice level site he's on, not a word about getting the heights of posts right on an uneven or sloping site.
True but you can find it on another UA-cam site. Probably too late by now🤗
Wow what a great tip on the level block

Very handy, thanks.

Great video! What bolts did you use for fixing the rails to the posts please?
Dig hole...level....postcrete.....Happy days👍
Thanks, great work
Glad you liked it!
Very good.

good job

Thats a good idea, most pro's could do that but remember i'm trying to help beginners starting from scratch.
I mortised 27 posts this summer and it was a lot of work. But it looks nice 🙂

Presume this would also work in Australia? Just reverse everything and do it upside down?🤷🏻♂️🔨
Yes i'd guess so
I got the joke mate don’t worry. It wasn’t wasted
Hilarious!!🤣
Thank you

Craig, top job. Could you list out the dimensions of 3 pieces of timber please; posts, rails, slat. Many thanks
Nice

Well done Craig , I'm just starting to ignore that pronounced Liverpool accent. Like your work very much , it's plenty good enough for me. Thanks !
Thanks Galland, glad you like the videos, i hope there helpful

What type and size nails have you used for the pales ?
Might be a silly question but can I dig a hole for the posts in grass? Will the concrete and post stay stable in soil?
We have a video on how to Install a post in soft ground, hopefully that will help you.

Where can i get some "Harris" rails, my timber yard doesn't sell them.
Try a local building merchant or maybe even a garden centre. Thanks
@@MrandMrsDIY
They sell "Harris" rails? 😂
That accent!. This is adults Art attack! 🤣
😂😂
How do you set the posts to height
seems the weak spots for rot will be between the post and picket.
Is that the guy that was in big brother?
Yes that's me!

Novice here, how deep do I need to set these posts to give the 800mm above ground?
40mm or above

Its Arris uncle, he invented the rail

or use post crete
He didn't show how to make the door
And the gate as well
We did another video covering the gate
Should never be cutting posts at the top cut them before you put them in the ground or dig your hole deeper
Thanks for the tip!
Who actually would do this this way🤔🤔
Many people
Where's cider
Sarder! still chasing fame!

Ear protectors....... Jesus
Wait for the concrete to dry before you start knocking boards on,,, you can see the posts moving for Christ's sake
