Roger had (at one time) farmeri x griffithianum and the reverse cross and chrysotoxum (which don't require a hard rest), as well as lindleyi and jenkinsii (both of which NEED a hard rest; dry, no feed, cool rest). The thing with the callista section, they put out a spectacle of blooms but they are short lived, 10-14 days. You've mounted them upside down. As hard cane Dens, they grow their canes upright, not pendulous. So your new growths are going to grow the opposite direction of the old ones. My griffithianum and thyrsiflorum are both mounted with the base about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the mount (squarish pieces of cork), so the roots can go down the mount and the plants stick out the top. In your growing space, it is more space efficient for them to be grown in a pot or you have to hang the mount really low.
Yeah I was a bit disappointed to read about the short-lived blooms, but sometimes that makes it more special when they're blooming. Take a Magnolia tree for example. Or a Cherry tree. If they bloomed for months it wouldn't be half as special as when it's a rare event. That's what I'm telling myself anyway...Re the Dend. Densiflorum - I've got a photo of it growing wild in the crook of a branch. Many canes are upright, but many are hanging down too. Having said, I'll take your word for it and move on to Plan B. As soon as I've got a Plan B! I'm thinking perhaps a small mesh basket then place into a clay pot for stability. Bark and sphagnum. Then where to put them might just be an unsolvable problem.🤷♂️🤣
Geoff, I don't think it's going to work. First of all you only re-pot this type when new growth starts growing roots. Secondly, I would cut off most of those leafless canes (they have no roots anyway) and turn the orchid 180° vertically and horizontally. Also I think it would be much better in a pot. Well, that's what I would do.
Yeah I've been told they're upside-down! I've already changed them around - did it this afternoon. I'm going to leave them now till next season when I might pot them up instead - once I've made some room on the benches. Thanks for the tips!
Oh wow Geoff.... Those blooms will be amazing and you're really tempting me to buy those beauties now too 😍. Happy anniversary to you both and may there be many more to come... What a lovely present 😊. I have a few dendrobiums now and my newest is the spectabile... Or the alien orchid. I really can't wait for it to bloom as its a weird one lol! All my dens are pretty big and seem to like sky diving off the shelf every now and again lol... Helped mainly by me knocking them over by catching them when moving other things around 😁 so mounting them to keep them in their place seems like a good idea to me lol. I've only mounted two of my orchids so far and you defintely need 8 pairs of hands to do it lol. Yours are looking good and I hope your lovely anniversary presents thrive for you 😊. I'm making good use of every single thing you sent me and I'm still smiling about my lovely prize 😁. Thank you so much and I'm now on furlough for a month so I've got plenty of time to order more orchids to put my prizes to even better use... Well that's my excuse anyway 🤣🤣.
Thanks Maxine! I'll have to look that one up - sounds very bizarre. Happy Furlough 2.0. Or should that be Merry Furlough? You do realise you'll probably spend more cash on new plants now you've got the time to trawl the online vendors?!🤣
@@Grow_Up_Man55 Yes defintely look it up 😊. There's several videos on it and the photos I've seen are amazing! It's a warm grower which might be a bit of a problem for me but I'm like you 😁... I've got at least a month to be checking out and looking at orchids online.... Maybe I'll even look up the care before buying first 😂😂.

I have both but they're in pots right now because I'm growing in the house, and I water very little or mist the root area when canes start to shrivel in the wild they still get the morning due.
Yeah I agree they must get 'some' water in the wild - I can't imagine it just shuts off completely. Plus, I just can't help myself - I have to practically sit on my hands to stop watering! 😂 So far, since they started their dry period a few weeks ago, I've watered them once which is the epitome of self-restraint for me...
Ah well, now you come to mention it...both Dendrobiums haven't budged in growth since then. They've been having a winter rest, but I'm not starting to water until I get some movement from them. To be honest, since that video was made, I now think they'd be better in baskets so that's something I'll consider should they spring back to life with some new growth.
Thanks Mick - I hate to say it but they're going to have to come off! Those who know more than I do about this type of Dend. say these should be upright. Oh well, back to the drawing board...Re my 'camera' - it's just my crappy old iPhone 7. Not for much longer though. I'm getting the latest iPhone thanks to the self employment grant!
Cheers Geoff I've had a few problems with my audio on my camera/videos and I've been doing the courses through youtube academy my allocated google partner said to use a phone so might try it on the next one, thanks
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids The only things I would add that I do are: 1. The iPhone defaults to a pretty low resolution but you can change it in the settings to film in 4K. 2. I prefer to use an app for the camera rather than iPhone's built in app. I use a free one called ProMovie. 3. I don't use the phone's built-in audio as it's useless. I bought this which has been great: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07LFXKR6K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Hope that helps a bit! :)
Yeah I've plenty of Zip ties. The idea was, though, to use fishing line so that the method of fixing couldn't be seen. I have to admit, though, I've since secured them both up with wire!🤣

Soaking the whole thing for awhile will make it easy to clean up the old media... less good root damage. Happy anniversary!
Thanks Melanie I'll bear that in mind. 😀
Congratulations on 25 years of bliss! What a great gift and way to honor your marriage. Looking forward to the blooms- you will do fine with them. 😋
Thank you so much, Trish! I can't believe it's been 25 years. I hope the next 25 goes a touch slower...😀🤔
Lol. Yes me too. My hubby and I celebrated 26 this past May and we were both amazed at how quickly time has gone by.
Happy anniversary 🎈 Those Dendrobiums are lovely
Thanks Nicole - fingers crossed they will be next year...🤞
Happy Anniversary ! Looks like you have some good plants there, hope they do well for you.
Thanks so much Lora! Looks like I'm going to have to unmount them and pot them up...not such a great start! 😫
Congratulations on your anniversary, good luck with the dendrobiums.

Those two dendrobiums are native here in my region and they do need a winter rest even though they are evergreen.
Thanks for the tip Linthoisana. Good job they’re getting one! 😁
