  • COMPLETE! Wow, what a project, and what an EXPERIENCE this has been. Refurbishing a vintage piano is not something I ever planned to do, but here we are! This project has taught me so much about working with old wood, stripping varnish, polishing brass, being aggressive AND delicate at the same time, and PATIENCE. Having a professional service and tune the piano also taught me so much about these instruments. I hope you have enjoyed the series!

We know you're a skilled knifemaker, but what a testament to your skill as a hobbyist! Not many people could dabble in piano a bit and then just take one apart, refinish it, and put it back together the way you have. And the sheer joy you show as you discover more about the piano and see the changes as you're working...this is all just beautiful. God has given you such an incredible gift. Well done.

So nice to see the natural beauty of the wood used to make the piano, Kyle. I'm glad you chose to keep it all natural wood and not some type of stain. And it sounds just as beautiful. Congratulations on an excellent project.

We had an upright when I was a teenager. My brother played.
I remember when the tuner came. It took forever. Lol Thanks for showing your experience.
Seeing how much care is needed to bring back good tone.
Thanks Kyle, have a Merry Christmas

Haha it does take some time, but far less if tuned regularly. He spent a little over 4 hours on this piano, because it hadn't been serviced in so long. If tuned yearly, that would be more like 1-1.5 hours. Merry Christmas Clinton!

I loved seeing this. I'm a budding piano technician myself, so it's nice to see a refurbishment from start to finish like this.

It looks and sounds wonderful, Kyle. It has to be rewarding to see finished and ready for another generation or two behind the keys. Stay well up there, friend.

I actually followed the whole restoration journey as I am planning to do a restoration for our Baldwin spinet (restain, and have to replace the keytops too...). Wanted to ask though what kind of finish would you recommend? Great skills and craftsmanship btw. Even the tuner did an incredible job, the sound has really improved a lot. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

Awesome! Good luck with it. Its super rewarding, but labour intensive. I would use something with no shine. Maybe like a shellac or something satin. I just did oil, to let the wood breathe as much as possible. I love it!

Outstanding! What an incredibly interesting project. I'm not musically inclined but that was an awesome series. What a difference from start to finish. Should be good for another 50 years now. You'll have to compose your own theme song on it now for the intro and outro of all new videos henceforth. 73 de W1SMM
