I'm loving this fish keeping arc in the Adam Ragusea show
Might be my favorite arc since Brownie Skin
Even Dave2D has been on it
Adams aquariums.
They're so educational I love it
This.
Hi Adam. I’m one of the crabs that escaped the tank. I have a daughter and two son now and we live happily in the state of Alabama. My wife and I are planning to pay you a visit next Christmas. I hope you got our wedding invitation. We understand you were busy.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us Adam! Whether its recipes for the at-home cook or simply a look into your hobbies, we appreciate everything you create :)
true
I’m something of a planted tank enthusiast myself who has watched this channel for several years. Your recent addition of planted tank content is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one! At this rate, pretty soon I won’t have to watch any other UA-cam channels, just this one.
I'm guessing you inject CO2?
@@user-op8fg3ny3j Never! A “high tech” tank with lots of injected CO2 and artificial fertilizer is subjectively prettier to some, but can be expensive and high maintenance. I do a “low tech” method with no additional CO2 or fertilizer called the Walstad method, which I discovered through a UA-cam channel called Foo The Flowerhorn.
@@user-op8fg3ny3j straight into my veins yep
I feel like there is great crossover potential between cooking and fishkeeping arcs here---DIY CO2 via yeast fermentation!
Lol, you took the words right out of my mouth, when this video popped up I thought the UA-cam algorithm was playing a joke on me, but our Mr Ragusa really is a man for all seasons. Cooking and aquariums occupy a sizable percentage of my time but I’m also quite fond of music and gardening, and he’s got these covered too! Is an Adam Ragusea video about specimen preparation and taxidermy too much to hope for?
Adam’s Channel is slowly morphing from a cooking channel into a variety channel like Atomic Shrimp. I’m here for it.
"a chain of low islands dribbling suggestively from the tip of florida" thank you adam very cool
This exudes the energy of someone who’s giddy over a new hobby and is dying to share their enthusiasm with literally anyone who would listen lest they burst from excitement
These kind of information, I don't even get from channels that focus only on fish-keeping. Loving this new fish-keeping content.
I live in Florida, but never thought to do a mangrove tank. Such a cool idea, I can just stock it with native fiddler crabs.
yeah if it's legal, lots of states have laws against keeping native species
6:28 Robed Ragusea, turkey knife in hand, shaving expanding foam is an image I never knew I would respond so humorously too. 😂
Adam, I think you underestimate how many of us are here to watch you specifically and enjoy your brand of infotainment. So whether it's food, history, aquaculture or anything else that tickles your fancy, we're here for it. :)
And as a fan of @SerpaDesign, I'd love to watch your tank builds!
I'm shocked to be saying this, but I'd love a "getting started" video. i never even thought i might be interested in aquaculture until watching the last couple of your videos and realizing that maybe i could finally accommodate my kids' let's-get-a-pet requests with a tank i actually like without having to deal with accompanying allergies. Especially interested in the idea of a hydroponic herb/apartment-friendly-veggies garden with a fish tank component!
It's pretty neat to see this Adam! Keep it up!
I myself went from watching nothing but cooking videos to slowly getting into hydroponics, so I can grow my own food indoors since I'm an apartment dweller. But the beauty and bonus of hydroponics is simple; fresh veggies/herbs/fruit all year round relatively pest free!
And fish are good for hydro setups.
@@wobblysauce Yep! AKA Aquaponics!
I've realized it's not the content that you make that I enjoy. It's listening to your voice. As you narrate it is just so wonderful.
9:03 Ohh you have no idea how hard I relate to that... It all started with just 1... now I have over 13... which really is the limits of how many I can care for with my time.
Need an aquaculture playlist! Keep this "stream" of content coming!
Yes, we care. We will watch you and whatever niche rabbit hole you happen to fall into and any time!
I've never kept fish and never intend to, but I've always enjoyed them vicariously. I love not just the content here and explanations and memories, but also seeing the very obvious joy it's giving Adam. More, please!
Never in my life did I think I would ever hear of the Eel Pit dude and Vampire Crabs in the same place, two of my favorite things
Those crabs are so chill, they're just lil dudes hanging out
I love all the information you give on each plant and your process. Also, there is a genius idea for that. Water circcculation system! I hope it lasts more than 20 years!
when your weather loaches get too big and get transferred to the pond(love that you actually addressed this), kuhli loaches might be worth looking into, funky little guys but they stay much smaller, get a few and you should be seeing them quite frequently, depending how warm your tank is
Ok I didn’t watch this video (yet) I just wanted to talk to you directly. I’ve seen your videos all over TikTok but realized it was reposted fan pages and not actually you. I tried to find somewhere to write this where you might actually see it.
Thank you for making content. I love your videos; how clear and well spoken you are, and your enunciation. It sounds like a funny compliment but it makes your videos addictively engaging to me.
You’re eloquent and articulate and explain things in plain English concisely without sounding condescending, even though you sound like a brilliant person probably smarter than most of the viewers.
I’m too shy to make my own content but you inspire me to want to try, especially since you have many of my same interests (for example I’ve always wanted to build a vivarium exactly like this and didn’t even know the video was here. I was looking for the rest of a one pan meatloaf TikTok.
The only problem is, i used to speak nearly identically to your oration style, but had no friends in primary grade school. Nobody wanted to talk to the walking textbook. So as a5-6 year old I tried to fit in by actively speaking with a lazy slang speech and mumbling my words so I didn’t stand out as much. And over 30+ years my mouth tongue etc got lazily trained to speak how I do now. But you inspire me to be better. Thank you.
Adam, keep doing videos like this. You seem way more enthusiastic about these than your other videos lately. Your passion and energy seems way higher when you're making videos you want to make instead of videos you think you need to make
Hi Adam! My old school had a fish tank club! We would take out the old water from the fish tanks to water the plants around the school because of the nutrients from the fish poop! Then we would get plant clippings and also submerge them in the fish tanks to grow them!!!
Can I say I just love your editing style for your explanatory videos. It's weirdly like, soothing? It's always very clearly cleanly done
Thank you for all the close ups of the crabs + fish! It's really cool to see them all swim around + hang out!
I had a vaguely similar setup in a 100 gallon tank vivarium, with a 10" false bottom made.from plastic crate qnd carbon fiber window screen material, upon which I placed the substrate for the plants allowing their roots to grow down and into the water. The outflow of my canister filter made terrestrial river which flowed into a small pond which had a sand covered pipe to allow water to seep from the pond to the false bottom chamber, and back to the outflow. Happiest terrarium I ever built.
Love everything you make Adam, no matter what the subject is. Your passion for things is always an inspiration.
Aw this is absolutely gorgeous!! Your crabbies might enjoy some bloodworms, shrimp, fresh veggies, and fruits since they're scavengers and would usually eat a very varied diet in the wild. Also, a cuttlebone might be a good addition since they need a LOT more calcium than you'd think. If you want a crab ladder, plastic embroidery mesh is my go to option. Best of luck with your little guys!!!
Literally shouted in excitement to know one of my fave food youtubers is doing a video on my off and on favorite thing, fishkeeping. The cowturtle crossover made me HOOT AND HOLLER! YESS!! Love this and its such a good match for your videomaking style, with the heavy science focus. Even if it didn't match your existing video style I wouldn't care!
The biology arc is unexpected, but welcomed with pure excitement
I'm thrilled that Adam has crabs and I would like to see more of them.
coming here from the fishkeeping side of yt while also loving cooking; W crossover honestly.. as long as he dosent start eating the fish!
I normally watch this kind of content on channels like serpa design and the dark den, so I thought nothing of it when a vampire crab popped up on my home feed and decided to click it. Suddenly I was met with the voice of Adam Ragusea and I had a total, "whoa, who, what, where am I!?" moment, what a lovely surprise! Would definitely love some future updates on this project, even if the mangroves haven't completely filled in yet. :)
I had a vaguely similar setup in a 100 gallon tank vivarium, with a 10" false bottom made from plastic crate and carbon fiber window screen material, upon which I placed the substrate for the plants allowing their roots to grow down and into the water. The outflow of my canister filter made terrestrial river which flowed across the tank into a small pond on the far end which had a sand covered pipe to allow water to seep from the pond to the false bottom chamber, and back to the inflow. Mine didnt allow the aquatic critters into the false bottom, which qfter seeing your setup I think I may rectify in the future. Happiest terrarium I ever built.
Bro from Pakistan here....all i wish to say is yiu are amazing and brilliant....im just a few minutes in and i have fallen inlove with the beautiful aquarium you have built
I love this video so much!
I am currently setting up a vivarium for a jumping spider, and I own two 29 gallon freshwater tanks. I didnt expect for my two hobbies to mesh so much, food and taking care of animals. Please make more videos like this, I love that you used foam.
Way to go! I love to see someone work on something that they're passionate about. I also admire all the thought and creativity that you used in creating your set up. The crabs are adorable! I have very fond memories as a kid of checking out the tidepools during low tide on the Oregon coast. Your set up seems like a personal tidepool. Keep us updated! Love to see how things progress, especially the mangroves. We don't have over here in the Northwest, unless I make my own tank... No, I have too many hobbies as it is! I'll live vicariously through yours.
I've had dojo loaches for a few years now, and they are by far the most entertaining fish out of any I've kept. They swim all over despite being bottom feeders, they're 99% peaceful (one decided to murder one of my snails after 2 years) and super compatible with other species, they can fart...
I think it's awesome you're getting into and sharing the joy of fishkeeping. I definitely understand the temptation to make more tanks, but I think a good way of resisting is to keep the tanks themselves interactive or keep fish you really enjoy the personalities/behavior of. Community tanks are great, getting to see how different species interact with each other and coexist.
Also as a tip if you want higher dissolved oxygen, which effectively has no downside, just install a small air pump with an airstone in your canister filter. You wont disrupt your flowrate/direction, if you hide the pump somewhere it shouldnt add any noticeable noise, and its super cheap/easy to do
I would love to see a video where you cover no filter tanks. Diana walstad is alive and well, and lives near me. Sometimes she presents at local aquarium meet ups. If you could get the GOAT Diana walstad, we would all appreciate that!!!! The walstad method is easily a 3 part series!!! And it relates to permaculture gardening practices, which relates to cooking!
Adam I'm loving this sidequest style videos. Recently got some space back in my office room and was planning on making a vampire crab enclosure. Its been stuck in my head since seeing a video from Dr. Plants!
I had some little crabs like this as a little kid. They always found a way to climb out, crazy escape artists.
I appreciate a channel that offers variety. I’m sure others do, too. Please, continue producing and sharing content such as this!
Love the concept Adam. very interesting and absolutely beautiful. Super creative the foam raft. Looking forward to seeing how she does, 20 years from now.
Adam Ragusea is turning into an exotic pet UA-camr and I’m here for it
I love the fish arc. I'm a big fish enthusiast and I think it's awesome that food and fish are coming together 41.
That's a really cool idea to do a floating platform. I just did a very similar build recreating an overhanging riverbank with spray foam. The problem I run into is that the water has to be a specific depth or else the overhang starts to float. This idea just embraces the floating
I've been watching your channel for a couple years and got into aquariums a few months ago. Really enjoying the dive into my new hobby.
I love it when the Adam style of video is applied to a wide range of subjects
Every Adam Ragusea video is a gift, Merry Christmas! 🎄
I'm loving this evolution 😂 please add springtails! They are a natural addition to this new obsession.
Hi Adam, I'm really happy that you're doing this type of content in addition to your recipes/food science videos. Not so much because I'm interested, but because of how enthusiastic you sound talking about it!
For your more recent recipe videos, I felt like you didn't have that same enthusiasm for cooking as you did in your earlier videos. I'm really happy that you have something else to talk about, and that you're branching out. Wishing you the best for your fish keeping arc!
Those teeny tiny little crabs are just unfathomably cute. 🥰
i've been subscribed for years and years for cooking and always been a huge fan, i'm thrilled to see the aquarium hobby here!! love it!!
Great set up! I had fiddler crabs for years but in a full aquarium they never had enough surface real estate. Great climbers always had a laugh seeing them waving on top of the tank.
I have grown hydroponic cannabis for more than a decade so I can appreciate this... I like your aquaponic setup. Very well done. Tonight I used your dads mac and cheese bake recipe and it came out perfectly... Thanks for that. :D
Beautiful habitat, Adam, and it's a joy to see you immersed in building a little world to escape to. Please don't be dismissive of the invasive potential of any exotic species, though. Just because they are small and cute doesn't mean that they can't be a pest in the wrong place. Some of the worst invasives in the world were prized as ornamental treasures until they escaped from captivity and drove out natives. Think snakeheads or Kudzu, and beware.
kudzu is the scariest thing, it’s basically going to consume the entire north american continent
@@breebree5045 People should consume it instead. It's highly prized in Japan, where it is native. If you have it nearby, try it; you can eat the leaves, flowers, and tuberous roots. Just be sure that it has not been treated. There's tons of information online.
Thanks for following through and sharing this with us! Awesome job!
Totally reminds me of the times I spent with my late dad on our six tanks of various sizes. Thanks for sharing, Adam!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 WOW ... Love your design ... You have aquarium landscaping talent for sure ... Well done & great video
omg yesss I fell in love with vampire crabs after Clint's Reptiles did a video on them, so cool!
side idea i've been thinking about. if you get into making mead then you can take the co2 from that process and wash it thru some water then straight to the diffuser. a home made co2 generator with a sweet byproduct. happy plants, happy fish, and happy belly lol
Judging by all the positive reactions, mines included, that most people care more about Adam's presence and person than the fact that the content is about food.
I literally thought of something like this yesterday and now I see it on my feed! I am very interested. It looks amazing!
can't wait to see the update video in 20 years that thing will be beautiful
Very joyful to watch
I’m so glad you’re doing this it looks like this makes you really happy and you really enjoy doing it. I’m happy for you.
I've heard of beekeeping age but Adam has hit a fish keeping age and I'm here for it.❤
Gotta say, if the crabs leave the greenhouse, they just might turn right around and go back in, haha! "NOPE!"
But really, if there's no urgent reason for 'em to leave the cushy penthouse you've created for them, they'll probably stay put.
Kind of loving the fish keeping videos, partly because you're SO happy about it and that's just very nice to share. Also because every tank you have is so much cooler than the ones I helped maintain when I was a kid. We had half a dozen tanks, but basically all the fish were my stepfather's hobby. I resented having to help clean tanks, lemme tell ya (I was a brat, what can I say), but I always liked watching the fish. Of course, it was the 80s, so there were lots of tropical things, tetras and mollies and that kinda stuff. And being the kind of kid I was, I decided to like the ugliest fish my stepfather had, ha! Seeing all these awesome new tanks - stuff that didn't even exist, maybe wasn't even possible decades ago - it's brought back all the best fish tank memories for me.
Interesting solution to the habitat problem. And I'm glad your subjects do not have to be fed with blood.
It's a beautiful viv! The mangroves are an especially nice touch.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours. Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us. 👍👍👍👍👍
I used to have a CO2 "system" on a fish tank. It was a gallon juice bottle with a couple inches of sugar water and a pinch of yeast, an airstone, and airline tubing poked through the lid. I'd pour some out and add fresh sugar water every week or so, and at the beginning and end of each ferment I'd thump the bottle each time I fed the fish to activate it a little more. The occupants were just feeder guppies, but they thrived. I sold enough plants back to the fish store to supply my aquarium habit for five tanks for years.
This is the coolest thing ever! I've been wanting to make an aquarium in our tiny condo. I've been watching a lot of fish youtubers but it's really nice to see my favorite youtubers get into the same stuff I'm interested in 🥰
I was hoping for this video, wasn't sure if we were going to get it.
Because this video is different from your normal ones, it probably wont do as well at first.
But im sure if you make more it might get popular, there is clearly an audience for this type of aquarium/habitat content on UA-cam.
I had no idea just how cool mangroves are. Love learning new things..
This was super fun. I could just watch Adam talk about literally anything.
I tried making my own cave with great stuff and using silicon with sand but guess the sand I used was too fine. Awesome to see you having success. Will use your technique to make something similar. Great Vid!!!
Really beautiful idea. A great project for you might be real wasabi. It grows partially submerged in streams so it fits in your layout.
also if you want to test out co2 injection there are these very simple and cheap baking soda / citric acid generators. I got one for my small shrimp Iwagumi, also with monte carlo, and the growth is magical.
As someone who likes food videos but LOVES aquarium videos and tank building, I am living for this new Ragusea video type
I have vampire crabs growing naturally in the water filled tree holes of our farm it’s really cool seeing them
Hi Adam! This is my first time watching a video on your channel though. Cool tank setup. Somewhat experienced mangrove keeper here, I have a 4 year old red mangrove with a decent canopy already. Hopefully you won’t have to wait 20 years! And red mangroves actually exclude salt from entering their roots, unlike black mangroves which do concentrate it in their leaves.
It’s refreshing to see a UA-cam not digging themself into a content hole, great video!
I was so excited to see this pop up, please keep us updated! I’d also love to see more aquatic plant setups from you, as long as you’re comfortable with the rate you make them at of course
Looks great! Been in fish since 1971 and in epiphytic plants since 1978.
I think I would actually be pretty thrilled if this channel slowly transitioned into some sort of hybrid cooking / aquascape channel. Fascinating stuff, Adam! Keep sharing your progress (or maybe just make an aquascaping channel?)
Also, I'd give my left pinky to see a colab with @SerpaDesign
love ragusea going from what fills the bank to what fills the heart
Great vid! More, PLease! A suggestion might be to add a sponge filter. This will help biological filtration, gas exchange, and you will have filter media to start you next tank! LOL It's too addictive to have just one ... or two ... or eight. LOL
I love how he finished with the escaping because it was on my mind the entire time.
If you want to keep loaches that stay small, roughly the size of the ones in your tank presently, Kuhli loaches are an excellent choice, there are some with similar coloration to the ones you already have (pangio oblonga), and some much smaller ones (my personal favorite) pangio cuneovirgata, which get to about 2 inches maximum, though they can be somewhat hard to source. Best wishes, I think you'll find that pangio loaches are by far the best fish.
Mangrove forests are awesome. Wishing you the best of luck with your project Adam! :D
I for one completely support the channel's new adorable crustacean overlords!
few weeks ago i got into painting warhammer 40K mini figures and i see my man Ragusea has a hobby of his own, neat
Omg what a pleasant surprise you’re not only into aquariums but you like the same KIND i do!! Loving this content. My passion started with fancy goldfish
THIS IS AWESOME!! But those crabs will surely escape that setup. I suggest a diy kit from Amazon with magnetic netting. Saved My crabs lives 🦀 ❤
All of a sudden I see Adam in 2023 and he has an aquaterrarium lifestyle.
Fantastic!
This is one of the coolest tanks I have EVER seen!
As someone who loves both cooking and aquarium/terrarium building, I really appreciate that you are sharing this with us Adam.
That raft building technique is amazing. For some reason it has also made me hungry for Tennessee-shaped crab dumplings. With vinegar/soy dipping sauce.
Whoa
