  • Not rules - guidelines!
Some ways of arranging the various elements that make up an image simply look better than others, so an understanding of these guidelines will help you create more considered images that go beyond simple snapshots. A well composed but otherwise uninteresting photo cannot be 'saved', but an interesting photo, well composed, can be a thing of true beauty.
This is the recording of a Live Webinar by Nick Rains, broadcast on 1 December 2021.

Re the pictures at 6:00 - I honestly find the left picture stronger than the right one! The parallel lines of the steps, the four cats approximately equal distance apart, the two centered rectangles on the house, the vertical rhythm of sky - house - cats - stairs. Sure, it follows standard composition rules less than the one on the right, but I guess this really goes to show how subjective this all really is.
    For the other side-by-sides I 100% agree.

    Masterclass!
I will watch this several times.
The picture of the guy in the bike is amazing.
I find it interesting also that the wheel is perfectly centered with the Bell Tower.

I think a good way to learn about image composition is to look at paintings by artists such as Caravaggio. A painter spends a lot of time creating each composition. They call some paintings masterpieces for a reason.

Hello Nick, just wanted to say that while it is apparent from the photos you showed in this video that, you are an amazing photographers with a great instinct and technique in your craft, what is even more impressive is your ability as an educator to communicate your ideas and perspective in a super clear and concise way. I have learned so much by watching your series of videos, and I am deeply grateful for your contribution to this community. Thank you!

Great job Nick. Composition is a very nebulous topic and varies from photographer to photogrpaher. This channel is one of the most informative Leica channel out of many of the other Leica branded channels globally. Keep up the great work Nick!

Hi Nick, thank you very much for this video. As always, each of your videos is a real lesson for me and it's very rare these days to find someone on youtube talking about photography (mostly gears). thank you and thank you very much

Composition is like a visual language the better we are able to use and know when to discard these “ rules” or building blocks of an image the better our images will communicate what it is we want them to say

As with almost anything in life, one must know and understand the rules - in order to break them. Any fool can get lucky, perhaps many times. But in almost any field, in this case photographic imagery, a true master is well aware of every aspect of their composition - from a single capture to a defining style/visual signature that the rest of us recognize in our heroes (and villains)…But they ALL know their work so well to be at one with every aspect and detail intimately. This includes the ‘rules’ that even the most arrogant egos scoff. But we already knew that..

This is outstanding explained! Takes so much time to prepare it. And to show it with your own pictures is even harder. You have to make every error and every hero and you need to know where it’s archived! A course about sorting and storing would be nice 😊 thanxs peter

I am thoroughly enjoying all your tutorials. I have just bought the V-Lux 5 - so Leica is very new to me. I have always had Canon SLR Mk3 and L Lenses - all very good but very heavy to lug around thats why I decided on a Bridge camera `and decided on Leica.

Thanks for your inspiring tutorial. It actually reminds me an interesting painting by Miro which has only a single blue dot in the entire frame. Guess where he had “painted” it at?

Very informative video, well presented. I do have a question about the image of the black tanks and white church (Falklands ?). I find the white object to the left of the tanks distracting. I know you had to have purposely left it in the image, so would you please explain your reason(s)?

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  2 роки тому

Frankly I didn't really pay much attention it but now you mention it I can't un-see it! It's a sign explaining the history of the site. I rarely remove objects in post as I tend to shoot documentary work, but this could have been a valid retouch. I don't find it particularly distracting myself, but I suppose others might.
