Thanks for the great video! I noticed that you were speaking fast but it didnt annoy me or stop me from learning about this. I'm definitely going to get one to run my plex server on for movies.
Thank you for the tut. I think I can learn a lot from you but tbh you really zipped through it mate! I was wondering what type of TV/monitor you are casting too with Chrome/Google Cast and it is possible to HDMI to my Not so smart TV still with benefits . Not sure are you playing games on your TV or desktop but casting to TV. I lie to see a few videos on how to setup all of theses different things you running so smoothly ! Thanks for the tie mate!
+M.A. Maceo +M.A. Maceo I have it connected to a 4k Samsung TV now, and cast to my pc monitor when I want to use it. Using it with the Chromecast ultra for the monitor. Setup is super simple, very just plug and play. Let me know your setup I can make. Some recommendations
How well does Kodi work with a media library on external HD's connected to the Shield? Is it fast, slow, does it crash etc? Is the Kodi metadata kept on the internal shield storage or external HDs? Is the game controller good at scrolling through the Android TV UI and Kodi? Thanks
Mmm.. Just one word of caution - don't follow NVidia's recommendation of connecting external non-powered HDDs because if they consume too much power then a. they will not work. and b. It could even harm the shield's delicate USB platform, as it's not rigged as a high power outlet. What you really want is an external self-powered HDD, like WD mybook series or such. These devices derive their power from their own AC power source (don't forget to use it). And then their up link is strictly data. But then again, this is not a real limitation since you can find those for volumes of up to 4TB, for a reasonable price. So it's not a big issue, but you need to be aware of it.
TheEEStudent - I wouldn't reccomend this thumb drive to format as adopted storage on Shield. When I experimented with it, I noticed it slowed down my system. The launcher took more than double the time to fully populate all apps After a restart, and, when in settings to check on apps, sometimes it would not be able to calculate correct size and storage location. Nvidia has posted a new list of characteristics needed for a drive to be used as adopted storage, and will mo longer be testing new drives to be added to their recommended list of USB drives. The best solution I have found is a 120 GB SSD drive in a USB 3.0 enclosure. Remarkably this was very inexpensive, and even less expensive than some USB thumb drives. The biggest issue with many thumb drives is poor random access speeds, and most companies don't include these specs on labeling. A good example is Patriot Rage 2 which has impressive sequential speeds,(164.3/376.3) but the random access speeds were unacceptable, and failed to format for use as adopted storage in the Shield. I love this drive, and continue to use it every day with my Mac Pro, but it's just not acceptable in my Shield.
ES file Explorer is not included in the store anymore. Someone knows where can I sideload it?. I'm not English native speaker and the video was too fast. You don't go around the bushes, I liked that!
When using an External Hard Drive what format does it need to be for it to work on the Shield, and which brand is the best to use. Thanks - great video by the way
I have the nvidia shield 2015 model With the Western Digital my book 4TB hard drive It is a powered USB hard drive... I Converted it to the adoptable storage so my 16gb nvidia shield is 4TB Machine I got The 2nd generation controller with the always on listening Microphone for Google assistant also using the Logitech k830 keyboard for the shield
The first thing you need to do, is root it. Then ES file explorer and sideload launcher(Mmm.. almost forgot, you'll also need to install a browser - chrome would do just fine). The third thing is install Aptoide and ZArchiver. The fourth thing is install every bios and then ePSXe for android. The fourth thing is D/L games from emuparadise or similar sites. The fifth thing is play every game that was ever conceived for a console, using ePSXe, directly on your NVidia shield. Enjoy.. The only drawback is that you only have 500GB to play around with (with the more expensive PRO version) but you can also connect an external self-powered HDD to one of the USB sockets. And then you can really have some fun. :-).
Just so people are aware - the Shield has received an update since this video and you can Mount your NAS shares directly as part of the storage settings. This means you can make your media directories immediately available to apps like Plex and Kodi, and build your libraries in Kodi directly from your NAS.
TK Bay isn't that the whole point of the 2017 release? Do you have any devices with Dolby Atmos? it's meant to be supported but there's no option in Kodi..
I liked and subscribed because now I know I just want a fire stick with Kodi built in. Everything else I'd rather just use an HDMI cord attached between my laptop/computer and my TV. Its cheaper, no learning curve to try using this box as a computer for gaming purposes, and with my laptop I can still experience superior gaming performances with my high end laptop. Sometimes it's not better to have two things in one. I feel like something better will come but this is not it. That is unless games are free. Then it would change my mind.
Great overview! Your videos on the Shield TV convinced me to buy one. I was wondering if you've rooted or plan to root yours. Do you see any benefits to doing so? Cheers.
zimes The main benefit of rooting your Shield is full access of your device you could download the full Google Play Store install titanium backup for rooted devices get rid of stock launcher that sucks anyway install aftermarket launcher and customize it much better than it already is it's a huge advantage to root it. And you can adjust the remote settings for certain games and applications.
if price is not an issue, and streaming is all you need to do, the Mi Box will do great for you. the Nvidia is really geared for gaming and connecting it to your PC and cloud gaming as well. thats the best part about it, and it hella fast as well.
Thanks for the great review, but now I've got a question for you. I've read on many different forums that the Shield has the worst upscale features in the market. They say if you play a 1080p video off a USB stick for example, that it upscales it to 4k (assuming you own a 4k TV) and since most 4k TVs do upscale on their own, the resulting picture looks washed out. Have you had a similar problem by any chance? Because I tell you there are ton of people complaining. I need this info before I make the purchase or not. Thanks.
HI TK, love your videos. Thank you for sharing. i just got N Nvidia shield and absolutely love it... have a question hope you can help. i just got a sharp smart TV 4k -- i was not able to see a google play store? like i would on my computer? can you tell me how to get it... sorry i am new to all this!!! Thank you.
Actually, the NVidia shield pro together with the ePSXe is the definite global gaming station. You don't need anything more (apart from a little bit more memory space and HDD space) because you can play both PS and xBox apps on it after just a little bit of tweaking. So basically, why bother playing around with microsoft or sony? Just buy the pro version and purchase additional game pads. You won't regret it. And you won't ever need to purchase another gaming console (well, "ever" is a long time.. I guess in 5 yrs or so they'll have games which exceed 4k and 60fps and then you'll want a better shield :-) ).
Thank U for the review. So I'll assume you don't recommend the purchase of the more expensive model ....maybe because you can simply expand the storage capacity! Is that the only difference?
+M.A. Maceo the large one has some benefits but it a lot bigger and heavier so mounting it behind the TV is not realistic. So the 2017 is good and now 20 dollars cheaper.
I'm really liking the Nvidia Shield but I want to know if it supports Dolby TrueHD/ATMOS & DTS-HD MA passthrough before I invest in it. Would really appreciate if you can help out. Thanks
Good review, can you please help me out, I purchased this item but when I play games my controller doesn't vibrate, can you please tell me how to enable it, thanks.
Check Out an app called TV app repo it is a leanback shortcut generator that is in the playstore Plus Aptoide tv it is an alternative to the playstore you have to sideload it

Did you get a chance to test it with an external storage (Ex: 500GB HDD on a dock with dedicated power source)? How does it handle this kind of setup. I might need it for android app/games data storage and Audio/Video.

Is it possible to mount a NAS as storage in the same manner as you did the USB drive? As in, my NAS is connected to my router in a different part of the house but I want to set up my shield to run Plex server exclusively so I don't use my main PC for hosting. Is mounting the NAS this way possible?
+Ario Ramoutar you cannot mount it as internal storage but you should be able to map it to plex for media access. Just be carefull network speeds will slow thing down a lot.
Hi I'm new to android tv box and planning to get my first android tv box soon. Can this play BDMV folders with DTS-HD/True-HD/Atmos audio files? What file system does it accept? NTFS? HFS+?
I was not offended, I just normally like to respond to every supporter, and it was hard for me to point that out when you posted the comment. I get it. no worries. cheers
TK Bay thinks for replay. I try to link on a m3u playlist on kodi on my shield the way i can do on laptop but it does not work. Do you know any way to put an m3u playlist on kodi app on nvidia shield?
Is it possible to get stored content shared across TV's in different rooms? Would I be able to buy two and somehow network them together to accomplish this?
Dose it have the apps to watch movies and tv shows already installed on the kodi app? Or do I have to install them my self? As well Dose this support HDR and is it 10 bit? I want to buy the best streaming box for kodi that plays 4k.
How does this thing rate as a web browser? my not so smart tv is horrible at playing content through the browser and a lot of networks are putting there best stuff on there site.
Thanks, appreciate your taking the time to try to inform/help us, but please take this constructively, SLOW DOWN, it's like you are racing to get done an out the door....can't keep up!
Can you install this on any TV? does it take over the tv's built in OS, for example, I want to get a samsung TV because I like their Tizen OS, would the Nvidia shield override the Tizen OS?
yes the regular android boxes are running a tablet version of your phones UI, while android TV on the shield is designed for TV's and works best with a remote.
One other question, you mentioned to no use a non-powered USB HD. Any issue with using a portable HD? I have a 2TB WD i was going to use with it, but now wondering if that causes issues.
+Droid Zombie the only issue is spinning HD tend to stop after a some time of not being used and you will get slower performance when you want to play after taking a 5 minute break. I would recommend an external ssd instead.
so the wallpaper is something that we cannot change, and it updates itself with each app you select. it hard to select one without changing the launcher entirely
here is the entire link, www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1484757102&sr=8-1&keywords=shield+TV&linkCode=sl1&tag=myyoutucomacc-20&linkId=d6d32ca2c372334962b5c356bbdd36ef
first install nvidia geforce desktop app and enable gaming on it and make sure its the same acct as the one you login to on the shield and voila it will work
i just bought the nvidia shield today. 6th feb 2019. it still the best box on the market!
You make great videos my man. Straight to the point with little filler. Very much appreciated!
Thank you for the support
appreciate the fast/quick information. thank you. so many videos are a waste of time
Thank you for the support
Yes thank you
Just bought one yesterday and can't wait to try it. Thanks for the lowdown.

How does it do when using just on WIFI connection?
Can you talk a little faster
no but you can speed the video to 0.75 and it would sound better.

Did you speed up this video? Or really speaking that fast? Sounds like you live in 1.5x speed.
I was exited to make the Video and I guess I went too fast. you can slow it down to 0.75 and it would better to follow.

Steven Andry did you get one ? I got sick of buying 45 dollar android boxes. the shield stopped me lol, best decision I ever did!

Did you get a chance to test it with an external storage (Ex: 500GB HDD on a dock with dedicated power source)? How does it handle this kind of setup. I might need it for android app/games data storage and Audio/Video.
I connected it to a usb 3.0 drive, and a spinning HDD would just a little delay with spin-up time, but no issues with that setup
Best buy has 4tb for $80 right now. Think it's only for 3 days sale. Also got my nvidia for $170 for the same sale.
that's a great deal, cannot beat it you get a lot of storage and the best streamer
Hey TK Bay, 2017 model doesn't have IR receiver integrated, and all my attempts to pair with Harmony Hub failed, I just got the "Flirc" IR receiver, but I have no idea on how to set it up. Is it possible for you to make a video tutorial for that?
thanks!
you didn't mention the Nvidia grid cloud gaming ... I want to know what games it currently has and how much do I need to pay for the service

thanks
Hi I'm new to android tv box and planning to get my first android tv box soon. Can this play BDMV folders with DTS-HD/True-HD/Atmos audio files? What file system does it accept? NTFS? HFS+?
also install kodi then install IARL to kodi, but you need to figure out how to get the shield tv to convert 7z file to be able to play ps1 games
At 5:48 it says ''Teta old phone''. In Spanish, ''teta'' means boob so the little kid inside me took over for a sec lol.
TacticalPower88 lol cierto jajaja
I believe Teta means grandma in Arabic
It does and that is why I did not respond to the other comment.
TK Bay I'm sorry for offending you. I was just giving the Spanish translation and a light-hearted take on it. I didn't know the Arabic meaning.

So the shield has been updated to the new UI now with the Oreo release
does every nvidia shield model boxes all from 2015 to now, include google play store?
Yes they should
will shield upgrade automatically to every knew android os like the 7.1.1 nougat ect
The older the model less likely it will be supported but yes updates are automatic
+Flying Squirrel FPV yes if you run a KODI or plex server on one of the units. They would share libraries over the network that way.
TK Bay - so really only one of the shields would need the pro 500GB drive? (Btw, is that an SSD?)
+Flying Squirrel FPV yes one if the shields would need that. And from what remember it is its sshd not ssd. But still better than external drive.
Are these drives fairly easy to install? And do you have a video of this? Thanks!..joe
yes very easy, and it's plug and play really

DECAF
Nvidia shield isn't sold in my country. Will everything like the apps and games still work?
+TheRealKillzah yes they are controlled by Google, so if you can use it on your other devices then you are good.
Can we play pirated games on it through PC? I have a good collection of old games which I would like to play on the couch.
This is an Android tv box, so if you games work on android this should work. but otherwise it wont.

I have new Nvidia shield tv , but unable to set flex sever up on in with my 750gb usb 3 dock drive
what File system do you have on the drive
Can you install this on any TV? does it take over the tv's built in OS, for example, I want to get a samsung TV because I like their Tizen OS, would the Nvidia shield override the Tizen OS?
When will it come for Sony Android TV?
Great Video! :D
Do you mean the updated UI Or the things covered in this video the Shield TV?
Thank you for the support

Is there a difference between smart TV android box and just android TV box thx
yes the regular android boxes are running a tablet version of your phones UI, while android TV on the shield is designed for TV's and works best with a remote.
movie
Do you download the steam stream app from the google play store?
Droid Zombie no just install the GeForce experience application
Ah ok cool thanks
One other question, you mentioned to no use a non-powered USB HD. Any issue with using a portable HD? I have a 2TB WD i was going to use with it, but now wondering if that causes issues.
+Droid Zombie the only issue is spinning HD tend to stop after a some time of not being used and you will get slower performance when you want to play after taking a 5 minute break. I would recommend an external ssd instead.
50 secs of bidibidibidibidi, got nervous breakdown, man....hire an rapper for this...click away
Thank you for the great information but you are moving too fast.
+Katrina Walker sorry about that, if you slow the video to. 75 I am told it's a lot easier to follow.
Great review, would be better if u slow down when you speak, im getting 1 btw
thank you, I will work on slowing things down,
actually u talked of everything I needed to know, but I had to watch the video twice and see if I missed anything
Hi bro how do u change the wallpaper, that wall green that you have, u can do it?
so the wallpaper is something that we cannot change, and it updates itself with each app you select. it hard to select one without changing the launcher entirely
TK Bay thanks
