  • This educational video is intended to raise awareness about the problem of facilitator cuing in Facilitated Communication (FC). FC is known by a variety of names, including supported typing, Spelling to Communicate, and Rapid Prompting Method.
In this video, CBS LA reported on a non-verbal student attending classes at UCLA using a form of Facilitated Communication (FC) called Rapid Prompting Method (RPM). A close analysis of an FC session included with the news report, however, raises questions about authorship.
To date, there is no reliably controlled evidence to show that FC-generated messages are independent. Rather, the research shows that facilitators, and not those being subjected to FC, are controlling the written output. Most facilitators are well-meaning and unaware of the extent to which they are doing so.
Groups like the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities have statements opposing its use.

Thank you for posting this. Consumers of therapeutic services need to be well informed so they do not waste time and money. FC is just not useless, it has been proven harmful.

Thank you for your comment. Agreed. Many people underestimate its harms. Readers looking for more information about controlled studies, critiques of FC/S2C/RPM, systematic reviews, organizations with opposition statements, etc., please visit www.facilitatedcommunication.org
